«NON TEMERE: D’ORA IN POI SARAI PESCATORE DI UOMINI»
V DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO
NEI due racconti di vocazioni che la liturgia oggi ci
presenta,riscontriamo
due
interlocutori:
Dio
interviene per abilitare i chiamati alla future
missione, e questi devono rispondere con prontezza,
senza esitazioni. La prima chiamata avviene nel
tempio, dove il giovane Isaia sta partecipando ad
una solenne celebrazione in onore del Dio altissimo.
Di fronte alla santità divina, si scopre un uomo dalle
labbra impure. Ma ecco che un Serafino, nel
purificargli le labbra, lo rende idoneo all’annuncio
della Parola. (I Lettura).
La seconda chiamata presenta la storia di un
pescatore presso il lago di Genesaret, destinato a
diventare pescatore di uomini. Dopo una notte
trascorsa invano a pescare, Gesù invita Pietro e ai
suo i soci di continuare a gettare le reti, fidandosi
della sua Parola. Visto il risultato inatteso, Pietro
smarrito si getta alle ginocchia del Maestro, dicendo:
«Signore, allontanati da me che sono un peccatore»
(Vangelo). Anche in san Paolo notiamo che la grazia
di Dio lo ha trasformato del tutto (II Lettura), da
fiero persecutore della Chiesa di Dio diventa il
testimone di Cristo morto e risorto.

5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Greatest Micacle of today’s gospel reading may not
have been that so many fish were caught, filling two
boats. Rather, the most astounding miracle could have
been that fishermen actually obeyed a carpenter’s advice
on how and where to do their job!
Many of us are unwilling to listen, much less respond, to
the challenge of God’s word in our lives. We may feel
unworthy: (Could God really be that interested in me?)
Certainly we can feel fear at what God’s radical message
challenges us to do. (Does God really expect me to love
my neighbor as myself by visiting the prisoner, clothing
the homeless, feeding the hungry? Yet here we are asked
.
to consider the example of those who are renowned for
giving their entire lives to God: people like Isaiah, Paul
and Simon Peter. Surely they also felt trepidation at
hearing God’s call, felt themselves unworthy of the
challenge put before them, and incapable of such
faithfulness. Yet, they “put out into the deep” – and it
changed their lives forever.
What is it that prevents us from “leaving everything: and
following Jesus today? How are we being called, in the
everyday events of our own lives? How can God’s gift of
faith, already present in our hearts, be encouraged to grow

BAPTISM PREPARATION
The next Baptism Preparation Course will be on Wednesday, March
9, 2016 at 7 PM in the basement of the Santa Maria Goretti
Community Centre. Both parents and godparents are required to

Special Mass and anointing of the Sick
The 24th World Day of the Sick will be celebrated
on Thursday, February 11, the memorial of Our
Lady of Lourdes. This year, the Holy Father's
Message for the Day of the Sick is entitled:
Entrusting Oneself to the Merciful Jesus like Mary:
"Do whatever he tells you" (Jn 2:5). In his message,
Pope Francis invites all those who assist the sick and
the suffering to draw their inspiration from Mary,
the Mother of Mercy. All are welcome to attend
the Mass for the sick and sick persons can
receive the anointing of the sick.

On Wednesday, February 17, you are invited to
celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the
annual Day of Confessions. On this day throughout
the Archdiocese, priests are available all day for
confession. In our parish(es), the schedule for this
special day is as shown above.
Pope Francis says, “It is not easy to entrust oneself
to God's mercy, because it is an abyss beyond our
comprehension. But we must! ... ‘Oh, I am a great
sinner!’ All the better! Go to Jesus: He likes you to
tell him these things! He forgets, He has a very
special capacity for forgetting. He forgets, He kisses
you, He embraces you and He simply says to you:
‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more’.”
(Jn 8:11).

the season of Lent 2016, in this, the Jubilee Year of
Mercy. You will remember that we instituted an
annual Day of Confessions across the Archdiocese
during the Year of Faith in 2013. We clergy, as
instruments of Christ’s mercy to you, continue to
find ourselves graced through your response to this
annual day of mercy.
God’s joy is forgiving. God is mercy. I invite you to
receive the gift of His healing on the 2016 Day of
Confessions: Wednesday, February 17. Priests will
be available in all parishes all day.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure about what to say or
do. The priest will be happy to guide you along. To
help you prepare, we have included a short guide to
the sacrament, along with suggestions for
Examination of Conscience, prayers, and some
helpful videos on Confession on the archdiocesan

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope
Francis calls us to share with everyone the tender
compassion of God that we ourselves have
experienced. In today’s Gospel, Luke uses a special
Greek word conveying just such tenderness. In the
other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be
fishers,” haleis, the same word that means catching
fish with hooks or nets, to be killed and eaten. But
Luke uses zogron, from zoe or “life,” meaning
“catch or gather people alive,” as animal lovers
capture without harming, rescue from “the wild” for
a better life, and protect in aquarium or zoo, tenderly
cared for by professionals committed to the
creatures’ well-being. So in Luke’s vision—and
Pope Francis’ as well—we who have been “caught
alive” by God’s mercy ourselves are to become
“missionaries of mercy” during this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and
gathering them into Jesus’ community to enjoy
fullness of life.

Your Knights had the privilege of sharing the rosary
in prayer as devotion to Mother Mary last Sunday
just before 10 A.M. Mass. On every month that has
a fifth Sunday, we will be in Church a half hour
before 10 A.M. Mass in devotion. And we
encourage our Parishioners to join us to experience
faith and fellowship. Our next fifth Sunday rosary
devotion is May 29. A reminder of our March 12
Gala to be held at our very own SMG Centre.
Tickets are $50 per person and we can pretty much
guarantee a wonderful night of dining, dancing and
having fun bidding on many auction items. A
significant portion of proceeds will go to charity.
Dreams Take Flight will be yet another worthy
charity that we will give funds to. If you are

Which offers Italian Language and Culture
programming, is now accepting new registrations
for Kindergarten and
elementary age students for the 2016-2017 school
year. St. Philip School is a very unique learning
environment, as it is the only elementary school in
the Edmonton Catholic School District that offers
Italian Language and Culture programming from
Kindergarten to Grade 6, NEW starting September
2016! Yellow bus service for most of Northeast
