LIBERACI, SIGNORE, DALLA AVIDITÀ DELLE RICCHEZZE
XXV DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO
GESÙ ancora una volta sconvolge la mentalità del mondo. Nel brano del Vangelo odierno di Luca, egli insegna ai suoi discepoli
come usare il denaro e le ricchezze: con accortezza e guardando non a un orizzonte temporale definito, ma all'eternità, al Regno.
Parla di un amministratore disonesto che ha saputo utilizzare le ricchezze per farsi degli amici e prepararsi un futuro migliore.
Gesù non lo giustifica per aver falsificato i conti, ma ne sottolinea la scaltrezza nel gestire la ricchezza. Da qui l’insegnamento per
noi: Gesù invita a ritenere il denaro un mezzo e non un fine. Infatti, il cristiano deve occuparsi del suo destino eterno usando i beni
per aiutare i poveri, perché sono loro che un giorno lo accoglieranno nel Regno.
Sono i poveri la vera ricchezza che non ci sarà tolta, perché grazie a loro possiamo esercitare quella carità che ci permette di
accumulare tesori in Cielo. L’invito alla giustizia e all’onestà nei confronti dei più deboli è ribadito anche dal profeta Amos
nella prima Lettura. Tutti gli uomini, infatti, sono fratelli e figli dello stesso Padre e tutti hanno per destino la santità, come
afferma l’apostolo Paolo nella seconda Lettura. Nicola Gori

TODAY’S READINGS BRING up a difficult question: Is it possible for one who enjoys a life of privilege to be a true Christian?
I am reminded of the uncomfortable image of the camel trying to pass through the eye of a needle. Are good intentions
enough?
Amos and Paul offer some valuable clues. The first reading sternly warns the rich and powerful against cheating and taking
advantage of the poor in the pursuit of profit. The second reading reminds us that “kings and all who are in high positions”
need our prayerful support in order to carry out their responsibilities to promote peace and dignity for all.
The psalm, however, draws us deeper. We are told, “The Lord raises the poor from the dust…to make them sit with
princes.” In other words, God erases the artificial distinction between rich and poor, between the powerful and the needy.
For the Christian, there can be no “us” and “them.” “There is one God,” says Paul, and so we are all members of the same
family, the same body. As we work to promote justice, peace and equality in our world, we are called to embrace each
person as our sister or brother. Though our circumstances may differ, we are all in need and we are all blessed.

the Year of
Mercy
September 18, 2016
Twenty-fifth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
Mercy is one thing,
malpractice quite another.
Why, then, does the
defrauded master in
Jesus’ parable praise the
devious steward? Jesus shows by example how to
sanctify material goods: by placing all our resources,
indeed our very selves, at the service of others. No
matter how costly such service, or how minimal the
return, such charity is the wisest investment, yielding a
reward that is literally out of this world. For Amos and
Jesus, authentic worship of God demands practical
charity toward our neighbour. Paul, too, declares that the
only worship acceptable to God is offered by a
community rich in charity. Liturgy must be matched to
life, “lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument”
(1 Timothy 2:8). This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges
us to live as “children of light,” as devoted to selfsacrificing service as “the children of this world” (Luke
16:8) are to serving themselves, as enthusiastic for God’s
kingdom of justice as we are about less-enduring

Journeying through the RCIA
at Santa Maria Goretti Parish
The Santa Maria Goretti Parish invites those who
would like to journey into learning and
understanding more the Catholic faith and to
deepen their relationship with God, to join the
RCIA program of the Parish which starts this
Fall. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults) is the entry point for many into the
Catholic faith community and into a deeper
relationship with God in Jesus Christ.
There will be an initial gathering of RCIA
registrants on October 26 at the Rectory at
6:00 p.m. to meet with the Pastor, Fr.
George, and with Sandra Talarico, Parish
RCIA Coordinator.

Registration Open
Registration is now open for our Preschool, First
Communion
and
Confirmation preparation classes for 2017.
Classes will start on January 15, 2017.
We have a very good reputation for preparing our
children for these precious sacraments, and we
encourage all parents with children wishing to
receive their First Holy Communion and
Confirmation to register. The parish is also
offering pre-school catechism classes for children
between the ages of 4-6 years.
Please register your children by calling the parish

may be picked up at the Parish Office. They may
also be downloaded from the Parish website,

Parents and candidates are also requested to
meet with Fr. George at the parish office. Fr.
