NON ASSOLUTIZZIAMO I BENI DI QUESTO MONDO
XVIII DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO
LA lettera al Colossesi (II Lettura) ricorda a noi credenti che nel battesimo è avvenuta una profonda transformazione: il modo di
vivere che abbiamo “rivestito” è quello stesso di Cristo e pertanto dobbiamo volgerci alle “cose di lassù”. Non possiamo tornare a
vivere da idolatri, assolutizzando i beni di questo mondo. La parabola del’uomo ricco (Vangelo) mostra l’inconsistenza di chi vive
la propria esistenza nell’ assillo continuo di accumulare beni per poter avere un futuro agiato. Prima di tutto perché quei beni sono
una falsa sicurezza: “la sua vita non dipende da ciò che egli possiede”. Poi perché tutta la fatica e le preoccupazioni per accrescere
e custodire quei beni avrà come esito inevitabile il lasciarli “a un altro che non vi ha per nulla faticato” (1 Lettura).
Infine, quando al termine della sua vita si troverà davanti al giudizio di Dio, troppo tardi si renderà conto di essere radicalmente
povero davanti a lui. L’attacamento egoistico ai beni è idolatria, separa da Dio e rompe il rapporto di solidarietà col prossimo.
Come uomini nuovi, abbiamo imparato da Cristo e condividere tutto con i fratelli: è questa la vera ricchezza che rimane per

18th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
IN OUR FIRST reading today from the Book of Ecclesiastes, its author, Qoheleth, wrote some 2300 years ago: “All is vanity.”
In this book from the Hebrew Scriptures, the Teacher, as his name translates, relays to us from across the millennia the
stark futility of our reality. The good suffer, heartbreaks beset us all and in the end everyone dies. This is as true of life
today as then.
Still, we foolishly strive to amass personal wealth and seek to protect it from others. For example, one estimate places yearly
global military expenditures at more than $1.75 trillion. This does not include all that we spend on our individual efforts to
safeguard our property and persons. How much would it cost per year to adequately house, feed and educate the needy on
our planet? The world’s 85 richest people have as much accumulated wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion inhabitants. Where
does our security truly lie? Where is justice?
The parable Jesus tells in the gospel reading today calls on us to be on guard “against all kinds of greed,” striving for what
matters to God, not seeking an “abundance of possessions” as our life’s purpose. Meaning in our all-too-short lives comes
from one source and one source alone, God. As Christ writes to the Colossians, “Christ is all and in all.”

keep it always presentable.

cleaning groups are unable to help out anymore for a
number of reasons, specially health and availability.
We really need new volunteers to help keep our
church always clean and ready for the different and
numerous purposes it serves aside from the regular
Masses.

The Edmonton Archdiocesan Council for
Development and Peace - Caritas Canada
are hosting a “Social Justice Retreat” on

This month at The Back Porch we were able to
speak with 51 clients and at least 2 lives were
saved! So far in 2016, we have spoken with
427 clients and 8 babies have been saved from
abortion!
