SAPPIAMO DISCERNERE I SEGNI DEI TEMPI
XX DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO
TENERE fisso lo sguardo su Gesù, come ci invita a fare la seconda lettura, significa anche, per quanto possibile,
condividere il suo sentire. Luca, nel vangelo, apre uno squarcio nel vissuto interiore del Signore, mostrando come in esso si
intreccino da una parte il desiderio per un fuoco da gettare sulla terra, dall’altra l’angoscia per un battesimo da ricevere. I due
aspetti non sono separabili, poiché il fuoco al quale allude Gesù è lo Spirito, il cui dono passa attraverso il suo battesimo
nella morte per effondere lo Spirito della vita. Anche in questo senso Gesù è venuto a portare non la pace, ma la divisione.
O meglio: la pace che egli dona non va confusa con un quietismo a buon mercato, nel quale si evitano conflitti perché non si
prende mai posizione su nulla. Chi ama la pace è disposto a perdere la propria pace per assumere decisioni coraggiose, dire
parole vere, compiere gesti profetici. Tutto ciò suscita spesso il rifiuto degli uomini, come accade a Geremia nella prima
lettura. La divisione che Gesù porta attraversa anzitutto il nostro cuore, per renderlo coerente con l’evangelo. Soltanto così il

20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCCASIONALLY THE WORDS of Jesus seem to smack us in the face. We shake our heads and move on to something more
comforting. Such are the words in today’s gospel. Most of us to not want to imagine the possibility of strife and animosity in
our family.
Nonetheless, Jesus knew that sometimes families are a hindrance for disciples. In his day, family was often the one
structure protecting individuals – but at the cost of a patriarchal system demanding conformity and obedience to
authoritarian demands.
In our day, I have seen parents oppose a possible vocation for one of their children, or react negatively when a son or
daughter wishes to spend a year working for and with the poor in another country. We also know the pain of parents whose
children distance themselves from the faith, despite a good education and faith-filled upbringing.
Choosing the Way of Jesus has never been easy. That is no different today. What Jesus asks of us, however, is that we
focus our attention on the true kingdom, that of our Father in heaven, where all are brothers and sisters, especially those
most in need. When we work to build God’s kingdom, our earthly families can follow along – or go their own way. As painful
as that may be for the disciple, the Way is what Jesus demands. Fr. Mark Miller, CSsR, Toronto, ON

THE NEW SUPERIOR GENERAL
OF CFIC
VISITS SANTA MARIA GORETTI PARISH
(September 9-10, 2016)
Michele Perniola was born in Santeramo
in Colle, a country in the region called
Puglia in Italy, March 7, 1946. He was
ordained priest on September 3, 1977.
Even before his ordination, he was
already entrusted with responsibility within
the Congregation. As deacon, he was
appointed the Novice Master. A position
he held for nine years, first in Rome and
then in Bergamo. In 1980, he succeeded
to get “laurea” in modern letters with
excellent grades. While serving as novice
Master, he taught some years at the
diocesan seminary of Bergamo.
In 1986, he was entrusted with the
responsibility of guiding the clinic of
Montefiascone, but only after a few
months, the Superior General, Fr. Nicola
De Angelis, surprised him with an
invitation to prepare for a new mission of
the Congregation in Bamenda, the
Anglophone part of Cameroon. In order to
get ready for the mission in Cameroon, he
spent the year 1988 in Toronto by helping
in our parish and learning the English
language. At the beginning of 1989, he
started a parish in Bamenda dedicated to
Mary Queen of Peace.
In 1992, superiors asked Father Michele
to go the Philippines as a vocation
promoter and formator of young aspirants
and postulants. He spent three years in
Manila after which he was surprised again
with an invitation to return to the Mission
of Bamenda. From 1996 until his election
as the Superior General of CFIC, Fr.
Michele was parish priest at Queen of
Peace Parish, Njimafor. During this
period, from 2002 to 2011, he also served
as superior of the African Delegation.
Throughout his stay in Bamenda, in
addition to the remarkable and dynamic
pastoral reality, Fr. Michele has promoted
the development of the area with the
construction of schools, churches, wells
etc. An entire Mission Station with a
Church, nursery and primary school was
dedicated to Blessed Luigi Maria Monti.
Specifically, he promoted the spiritual and
material support for so many people and
families in difficult situations.

Michele Perniola è nato a Santeramo in
Colle, un paese nella Regione delle Puglie in
Italia, il 7 marzo 1946 . Il 1° ottobre 1963
fece la Prima Professione Religiosa e quella
Perpetua esattamente 5 anni dopo. Durante il
periodo dei voti temporanei frequentò il
liceo classico dov’è ora la Casa Generale. Fu
ordinato Sacerdote il 3 settembre 1977.
Quando era ancora diacono gli fu data la
responsabilità di Maestro di Noviziato.
Carica che ricoprì per nove anni, prima a
Roma e poi a Bergamo. Nel 1980 riuscì a
laurearsi in lettere con indirizzo storico.
Mentre era Maestro di noviziato insegnò
alcuni anni al seminario di Bergamo.
Nel 1986 gli fu affidata la responsabilità di
guidare l’opera di Montefiascone, ma solo
dopo pochi mesi il Superiore Generale, P.
Nicola De Angelis, lo sorprese con l’invito a
prepararsi per iniziare una nuova Missione
della Congregazione a Bamenda, nella zona
anglofona del Camerun. Trascorse l’anno
1988 a Toronto aiutando nella parrocchia e
apprendendo la lingua inglese. All’inizio del
1989 lo troviamo a Bamenda per dare avvio
alla Missione dedicata a Maria Regina della
Pace. Nel 1992 P. Michele e’ andato nelle
Filippine come animatore vocazionale e
formatore dei giovani aspiranti e postulanti.
Dal 1996 fino all’inizio del recente Capitolo
Generale e elezione come
Superiore
Generale P. Michele è stato parroco in
Queen of Peace Parish. Durante questo
periodo, dal 2002 al 2011, ha ricoperto
anche l’incarico di Superiore della
Delegazione Africana. Nella Missione di
Bamenda, oltre alla notevole e dinamica
realtà pastorale, P. Michele ha promosso lo
sviluppo dell’area con la costruzione di
scuole, chiese, pozzi ecc. Un’intera Mission
Station con scuola materna, elementare e
chiesa è stata dedicata al Beato Luigi Maria
Monti. In particolare ha promosso il
sostegno spirituale e materiale a tante
persone e famiglie in situazioni di disagio.

Year of Mercy Talk No. 4

Come and spend an evening with Father
Michele on September 9, 2016 (Friday) at
the church, and listen to him speak on the
Year of Mercy.
Mass will be at 6:30 p.m. that evening,
then starting at 7:00 he will speak and
share with us our parish life and lead us
in our study and reflection. Coffee and
refreshments will follow at the Hall.
Everyone is warmly invited.
This is the fourth part of the continuing
special reflections and studies about the Year
of Mercy that we started last January 21.
What better way to fully experience and live
out the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy
than by taking part in this adult faith
formation series? So let us all come and
participate in this very important activity of
our Parish.

Father Denny is a member of CFIC
(religious community of Fr George ). At
present he is the Vocation animator of CFIC
India and the administrator of Casa Maria,
a retreat house of CFIC in Kerala, India.
