JULY-AUGUST / IOY§IO™-∞À°OÀ™∆O™ 2008 KOINONIA A Monthly Publication of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. 520 S. Ponca Street, Baltimore, MD 21224 Pastoral Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos Where is your faith? People in general today discuss this topic on a daily basis. It is something which each and everyone of us deals with throughout our lives “WHERE IS OUR FAITH GOING” I believe ∆∏π™ is the same question the Lord would like to ask us today, “Where is your Faith?” - Where do we as normal human beings put our trust? Do we only trust ourselves, our own knowledge and wisdom? Do we put our trust in our leaders, our advisors, our technology and so on? Do we feel that our career is adequate? are we entrusting our families to only ourselves? It has been proven that no human being can live without faith in someone or something. To me, there are no “Atheists” in this world. They just say it to be different from “Society”. It is just a fashion statement that people today do not believe in God or something else. The difference between the christian and non-christian is not that one has faith and the other does not. They both have faith. The difference between the two is the object of their faith. One believes in himself and trusts in his or her own efforts. The Christian though puts his or her faith in Jesus Christ and trust in God who cares and is always there to guide us in our spiritual journey. Today many people would rather believe the advertisements they see or hear about than believe what Jesus Christ has to say. People, put most of their faith in scientific technology and research. They believe that they will live a long time because of the new scientific methods, and medicines that are being put out in the market place. We are living in a dream world, a non realistic society. We have to wake up from that dream and face the reality of life. It is only when we believe in God and act on it that it becomes a reality in our lives. There is nobody in the world that will not face a problem, a tragedy during his or her life. It is this faith that enables us to overcome the storms and disappointments in life because of our belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Remember the fishermen (the disciples) when they were in the waters and the great storm hit their boat, they were so frightened and they awakened Christ and begged Him to rescue them. What did Jesus say to them? “Where is your faith?” We know then that the real problem was not the storm but the disciples’ unbelief. Their unbelief was more dangerous than the storm. Without faith in God, they were left to fend for themselves. Life eventually will reach a hopeless end, for those who do not have faith in God. Whenever something like that happens to us in one way or another, how you deal with the storm is of crucial importance. Everyone deals with their problems in many different ways. But very often, our response to the problems of life is not of faith but fear. Fear is the natural reaction we have when we feel we are losing control. When things are not moving according to plan, you are unable to cope with the work or demands of life, or you needed help but found none. When fear takes over, it prevents us from dealing with the actual problem. The Bible says in Phil 4:13 - “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength”. So, if we ask and put our trust in the Lord He will gives us the strength and wisdom we need to overcome. If we do not seek the Lord then we will be continuously paralysed by fear and we will never overcome our problems in life. Father Michael will be on Vacation from Tuesday, July 1st to Saturday, July 12th PAGE 2 KOINONIA July-August/πÔ‡ÏÈÔ˜-∞‡ÁÔ˘ÛÙÔ˜, 2008 ª‹Ó˘Ì· ·fi ÙÔÓ ¶·Ù¤Ú· ªÈ¯·‹Ï §. ¶·ÛÙÚÈÎfi ¶Ô˘ Â›Ó·È Ë ›ÛÙË ÛÔ˘? °ÂÓÈο ÔÈ ¿ÓıÚˆÔÈ Û‹ÌÂÚ· Û˘˙ËÙÔ‡Ó ·˘Ùfi ÙÔ ı¤Ì· Û ηıËÌÂÚÈÓ‹ ‚¿ÛË. ∂›Ó·È οÙÈ Ô˘ Û˘Ó¯Ҙ fiÏÔÈ ·ÓÙÈÌÂÙˆ›˙Ô˘Ì ÛÙË ˙ˆ‹ Ì·˜, «¶Ô˘ ¿ÂÈ Ë ¶›ÛÙË Ì·˜;» ¶ÈÛÙ‡ˆ fiÙÈ ÙËÓ ›‰È· ÂÚÒÙËÛË ı¿ıÂÏ ӷ Ì·˜ ÚˆÙ‹ÛÂÈ Î·È Ô ∫‡ÚÈÔ˜ Û‹ÌÂÚ·. «¶Ô˘ Â›Ó·È Ë ›ÛÙË Û·˜;” ¶ÔÈfiÓ ÂÌÈÛÙ¢fiÌ·ÛÙ ÈÔ Ôχ Û·Ó ¿ÓıÚˆÔÈ? ∂ÌÈÛÙ¢fiÌ·ÛÙ ÙÔÓ Â·˘Ùfi Ì·˜, ÙȘ ÁÓÒÛÂȘ Ì·˜ Î·È ÙËÓ ÛÔÊ›· Ì·˜? ∂ÌÈÛÙ¢fiÌ·ÛÙ ÙÔ˘˜ ·ÓˆÙ¤ÚÔ˘˜ Ì·˜, ÙÔ˘˜ Û˘Ì‚Ô˘ÏÂ˘Ù¤˜ Ì·˜, ÙËÓ Ù¯ÓÔÏÔÁ›· Ì·˜ Î·È Ù· ÏÔÈ¿ ... ¡ÔÈÒıÔ˘Ì fiÙÈ Ë Î·ÚȤڷ Ì·˜ Â›Ó·È ÈηÓÔÔÈËÙÈ΋, ÂÌÈÛÙ¢fiÌ·ÛÙ ÙȘ ÔÈÎÔÁ¤ÓÂȤ˜ Ì·˜, ÌfiÓÔÓ ÛÙÔÓ Â·˘Ùfi Ì·˜? ∂›Ó·È ·Ô‰Â‰ÂÈÁ̤ÓÔ fiÙÈ Î·Ó›˜ ‰ÂÓ ÌÔÚ› Ó· ˙‹ÛÂÈ ¯ˆÚ›˜ ›ÛÙË Û οÔÈÔÓ ‹ οÙÈ. °È· ̤ӷ, ‰ÂÓ ˘¿Ú¯Ô˘Ó «∞ıÂ˚ÛÙ¤˜» Û’ ·˘ÙfiÓ ÙÔÓ ÎfiÛÌÔ. ∞Ï¿ ÙÔ Ï¤Ó ÁÈ· Ó· Â›Ó·È ‰È·ÊÔÚÂÙÈÎÔ› ·fi ÙÔÓ ˘fiÏÔÈÔ ÎfiÛÌÔ. ∂›Ó·È ÌÈ· ·Ï‹ Û‡Á¯ÚÔÓË ‰‹ÏˆÛË fiÙÈ ÔÈ ¿ÓıÚˆÔÈ Û‹ÌÂÚ· ‰ÂÓ ÈÛÙÂ‡Ô˘Ó ÛÙÔÓ £Âfi ‹ Û οÙÈ ¿ÏÏÔ. ∏ ‰È·ÊÔÚ¿ ÌÂٷ͇ ¯ÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÒÓ Î·È ÌË-¯ÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÒÓ ‰ÂÓ Â›Ó·È fiÙÈ Ô ¤Ó·˜ ¤¯ÂÈ ›ÛÙË Î·È Ô ¿ÏÏÔ˜ ‰ÂÓ ¤¯ÂÈ. ∫·È ÔÈ ‰‡Ô ¤¯Ô˘Ó ›ÛÙË. ∏ ‰È·ÊÔÚ¿ Â›Ó·È ÙÔ ·ÓÙÈΛÌÂÓÔ Ù˘ ›ÛÙ˘ ÙÔ˘˜. √ ¤Ó·˜ ÈÛÙ‡ÂÈ ÛÙÔÓ Â·˘Ùfi ÙÔ˘ Î·È ÛÙȘ ‰ÈΤ˜ ÙÔ˘ ÈηÓfiÙËÙ˜ Î·È ÚÔÛ¿ıÂȘ. √ ¯ÚÈÛÙÈ·Ófi˜ ÂÓ ·ÓÙÈı¤ÛÂÈ ı¤ÙÂÈ ÙËÓ ›ÛÙË ÙÔ˘ ÛÙÔÓ πËÛÔ‡ ÃÚÈÛÙfi Î·È ÙËÓ ÂÌÈÛÙÔÛ‡ÓË ÙÔ˘ ÛÙÔ £Âfi, Ô ÔÔ›Ô˜ ÊÚÔÓÙ›˙ÂÈ Î·È ¿ÓÙ· Ì·˜ ηıÔ‰ËÁ› ÛÙÔ ÓÂ˘Ì·ÙÈÎfi Ì·˜ Ù·Í›‰È. ™‹ÌÂÚ· ÔÏÏÔ› ¿ÓıÚˆÔÈ ı· ϤÁ·Ì fiÙÈ ÈÛÙÂ‡Ô˘Ó ÂÚÈÛÛfiÙÂÚÔ ÛÙȘ ‰È·ÊËÌ‹ÛÂȘ Ô˘ ‚Ï¤Ô˘Ó ‹ ·ÎÔ‡ÓÂ, ·Ú¿ ÈÛÙÂ‡Ô˘Ó Û’ ·˘Ù¿ Ô˘ ϤÂÈ Ô πËÛÔ‡˜ ÃÚÈÛÙfi˜. ¶ÔÏÏÔ› ¿ÏÈ ı¤ÙÔ˘Ó ÙËÓ ›ÛÙË ÙÔ˘˜ ÛÙËÓ ÂÈÛÙËÌÔÓÈ΋ Ù¯ÓÔÏÔÁ›· Î·È ¤Ú¢ӷ. ¶ÈÛÙÂ‡Ô˘Ó fiÙÈ ı· ˙‹ÛÔ˘Ó ¿Ú· Ôχ, ‚·ÛÈ˙fiÌÂÓÔÈ ÛÙȘ Ӥ˜ Ù¯ÓÔÏÔÁÈΤ˜ ÌÂıfi‰Ô˘˜ Î·È ÛÙ· Ê¿Ú̷η Ô˘ ˘¿Ú¯Ô˘Ó Û‹ÌÂÚ· ÛÙËÓ ·ÁÔÚ¿. ∑ԇ̠ے ¤Ó· ÎfiÛÌÔ Ô˘ ÔÓÂÈÚ‡ÂÙ·È, Î·È fi¯È Û ÌÈ· ÎÔÈÓˆÓ›· ‚·ÛÈṲ̂ÓË ÛÙËÓ Ú·ÁÌ·ÚÙÈÎfiÙËÙ·. ¶Ú¤ÂÈ Î¿ÔÙ ӷ ͢ӛÛÔ˘Ì ·fi ·˘Ùfi ÙÔ fiÓÂÈÚÔ Î·È Ó· ·ÓÙÈÌÂÙˆ›ÛÔ˘Ì ÙËÓ Ú·ÁÌ·ÙÈ΋ ˙ˆ‹. ªfiÓÔÓ fiÙ·Ó ÈÛÙ‡ԢÌ ÛÙÔ £Âfi Î·È ÂÓÂÚÁԇ̠ۇÌʈӷ Ì ÙÔ ı¤ÏËÌ¿ ∆Ô˘, ÙfiÙ ÌfiÓÔÓ ˙ԇ̠ڷÁÌ·ÙÈο. ¢ÂÓ ˘¿Ú¯ÂÈ Î·Ó›˜ ÛÙÔ ÎfiÛÌÔ Ô˘ ‰ÂÓ ı· ·ÓÙÈÌÂÙˆ›ÛÂÈ ¤Ó· Úfi‚ÏËÌ· , ÌÈ· ÙÚÚ·Áˆ‰›·, ηٿ ÙË ‰È¿ÚÎÂÈ· Ù˘ ˙ˆ‹˜ ÙÔ˘. ∆fiÙ ÏÔÈfiÓ Â›Ó·È ·˘Ù‹ ηı’ ·˘Ù‹ Ë ¶π™∆∏ Ô˘ Ì·˜ ηıÈÛÙ¿ ÈηÓÔ‡˜ Ó· ÍÂÂÚ¿ÛÔ˘Ì ÙË ı‡ÂÏÏ· Î·È ÙËÓ ·ÔÁÔ‹Ù¢ÛË Ù˘ ˙ˆ‹˜, Ì ÙËÓ ›ÛÙË Ì·˜ ÚÔ˜ ÙÔÓ ∫‡ÚÈÔ Î·È ™ˆÙ‹Ú· Ì·˜ πËÛÔ‡ ÃÚÈÛÙfi. ¡· ı˘Ì¿ÛÙ ÙÔ˘˜ „·Ú¿‰Â˜ (ÙÔ˘˜ ∞ÔÛÙfiÏÔ˘˜) fiÙ·Ó ‚Ú›ÛÎÔÓÙ·Ó ÛÙË ı¿Ï·ÛÛ· Î·È ‹ÏıÂ Ë ÌÂÁ¿ÏË ı‡ÂÏÏ· Ó· ÎÙ˘‹ÛÂÈ ÙËÓ ‚¿Úη ÙÔ˘˜. Throughout the history of our beloved St. Nicholas Church, we enjoyed the efforts of thousands of volunteers beginning prior to the groundbreaking of our edifice. In fact, this is true in all parishes because the founders are inspired to work in unison in order to see the vision for their community come to fruition: to plant the seed of Christianity, in our case Orthodoxy, in the far reaches of the world. For the Greeks of the Diaspora, it was vitally important to them to transplant the roots of their faith wherever their fate took them whether it was Asia Minor, Australia, Canada, Europe, North or South America, etc. They were successful in realizing their mission of spreading the Word of God by building churches and church schools in their new homelands against all odds, enduring hardships, and with limited economic resources because their faith NEVER wavered. Unlike the Orthodox Church of Greece, our parishes have been established and maintained by the efforts and donations of devout volunteers—without government support. Let us ask ourselves, if our forefathers could accomplish so much as strangers in new lands, how high will we set our goals to perpetrate and expand their vision of glorifying God and spreading His Word? Do we not owe it to their memory to do so? We are quite fortunate at St. Nicholas to have many dedicated volunteers serving its various ministries without reservation; they are responsible for the very existence of our church community. These individuals continue their service and by example involve their children serving the church, for they find fulfillment in glorifying and thanking God by using the talents, which He much has bestowed upon them. They know that giving is much more rewarding than receiving. They forego the notion of earning extra money at a job and give their time/funds to their church. In so doing, as Christians they are practicing the values of our JudeoChristian faith: loving and helping our neighbors, thus coming closer to God. It is amazing how some persons who are full-time employees and heads of households still find time to be very active volunteers; thus giving credence to the saying,” Ask a busy person to complete a task and it will surely get done.” Once again, it was rewarding to see more than forty GOYANS and others pleasantly interacting as they prepared the Crosses for Palm Sunday. Likewise, it is heart warming as they present us with the day’s bulletin (or present each lady with a carnation on Mother’s Day!) These traditions can only be perpetrated by the efforts of caring advisors, who although have other family obligations give priority to their children’s involvement in the church. As we welcome the month of June, St. Nicholas offers us a host of opportunities for which to volunteer. You need only to let us know when and how you can assist your church. The help of young and old, able-bodied and shut-ins is needed in preparing for, setting-up, working during our annual festival, cleanup, or making phone calls. Be assured that we value your time and efforts whether for one hour or longer. Furthermore, you will find sharing fellowship with fellow- volunteers to be quite rewarding. In recent years we have seen some dedicated families enthusiastically working during the entire festival, from “sunup to sundown” and can only conclude that the parents are setting the example of volunteerism for their children. These same families are commended because they are among the first to volunteer in various activities throughout the year. From Monday, June 16 - Friday, June 20th St. Nicholas will host the Vacation Bible School for our youngsters during which time your involvement will be greatly appreciated. We foresee more active participation in the events of our community and new traditions being initiated by our energetic and innovative Father Michael. We commit ourselves to their accomplishments. Let us know that you, too, will be a vital part of our team! We have been made aware through the teachings of our church of all that Jesus Christ our Savior has voluntarily done for us; so now we must answer, “What can I do for Jesus through our Church?” ∂ıÂÏÔÓÙÈ΋ ‚Ô‹ıÂÈ·— ∂›Ó·È ˘Ô¯Ú¤ˆÛ‹ Ì·˜ ∞fi ÙËÓ ∂˘·ÁÁÂÏ›· §·Ï¿ ∫·ÈÚfi ÚÈÓ, Ë ∞ÌÂÚÈ΋ ÂfiÚÙ·Û ÙËÓ ¶·Ó-∞ÌÂÚÈηÓÈ΋ ∂‚‰ÔÌ¿‰· ÙˆÓ ∂ıÂÏÔÓÙÒÓ Ù˘, ÁÈ· Ó· ÙÈÌ‹ÛÂÈ Î·È Ó· ÂÎÊÚ¿ÛÂÈ ÙËÓ ÂÎÙ›ÌËÛ‹ Ù˘ ÚÔ˜ ÙÔ˘˜ ¯ÈÏÈ¿‰Â˜ ÂıÂÏÔÓÙ¤˜ Ô˘ Úfiı˘Ì· ‰›ÓÔ˘Ó ÙÔ ¯ÚfiÓÔ ÙÔ˘˜ Î·È ÙȘ ÁÓÒÛÂȘ ÙÔ˘˜ - ÁÈ· ÙÔ Î·Ïfi fiψÓ. ªÂ ÙÔÓ ÙÚfiÔ ·˘Ùfi ·Ó·˙ˆÔÁÔÓÔ‡Ó ÙÔ ∞ÌÂÚÈηÓÈÎfi ¶Ó‡̷. ¢È·‚¿˙ÔÓÙ·˜ ÙËÓ ÈÛÙÔÚ›· Ù˘ ·Á·Ë̤Ó˘ Ì·˜ ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›·˜ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¡ÈÎÔÏ¿Ô˘, ‚Ï¤Ô˘Ì fiÙÈ, ·ÔÏ·Ì‚¿ÓÔ˘Ì ÙȘ ÚÔÛ¿ıÂȘ ÙˆÓ ¯ÈÏÈ¿‰ˆÓ ÂıÂÏÔÓÙÒÓ, Ô˘ ¿Ú¯ÈÛ·Ó, ÚÈÓ ·ÎfiÌË ‚¿ÏÔ˘Ó ıÂ̤ÏÈ· ÛÙÔ ÌÂÁ·ÏfiÚÂÔ ÔÈÎÔ‰fiÌËÌ¿ Ì·˜. ¶Ú¿ÁÌ·ÙÈ, Â›Ó·È ·Ï‹ıÂÈ· ÁÈ· fiϘ ÙȘ ∫ÔÈÓfiÙËÙ˜, fiÙÈ , ÔÈ È‰Ú˘Ù¤˜ ÙˆÓ ÂÚÁ¿ÛÙËÎ·Ó fiÏÔÈ Ì·˙› Ì ÔÌfiÓÔÈ·, ÁÈ· Ó· ‰Ô˘Ó ÙÔ fiÚ·Ì¿ Ù˘ ∫ÔÈÓfiÙËÙ¿˜ ÙÔ˘˜ Ó· ¿ÚÂÈ Û¿Úη Î·È ÔÛÙ¿: Ó· Ê˘Ù¤„Ô˘Ó ÙÔ ÛfiÚÔ Ù˘ ÃÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÔÛ‡Ó˘, ÛÙËÓ ÂÚ›ÙˆÛ‹ Ì·˜ Ù˘ √ÚıÔ‰ÔÍ›·˜, ÛÙ· ¤Áηٷ Ù˘ Á˘. °È· ÙÔ˘˜ ã∂ÏÏËÓ˜ Ù˘ ¢È·ÛÔÚ¿˜, ‹Ù·Ó Ôχ ÛËÌ·ÓÙÈÎfi Ó· ÌÂÙ·Ê˘Ù¤¯Ô˘Ó ÙȘ Ú›˙˜ Ù˘ ›ÛÙ˘ ÙÔ˘˜ fiÔ˘ ÙÔ˘˜ ‹Á ÙÔ Âڈ̤ÓÔ ÙÔ˘˜, ›Ù ‹Ù·Ó ∞˘ÛÙÚ·Ï›·, ‹ ªÈÎÚ¿ ∞Û›·, ∫·Ó·‰¿˜, ∂˘ÚÒË, ¡fiÙÈ· ‹ µfiÚÂÈ· ∞ÌÂÚÈ΋, Î.Ï.. ∂›¯·Ó ÌÂÁ¿ÏË ÂÈÙ˘¯›· ÛÙËÓ ·ÔÛÙÔÏ‹ ÙÔ˘˜ Ó· ‰È·‰fiÛÔ˘Ó ÙÔ ÏfiÁÔ ÙÔ˘ £ÂÔ‡, ¯Ù›˙ÔÓÙ·˜ ÂÎÎÏËۛ˜ Î·È ÂÎÎÏËÛÈ·ÛÙÈο Û¯ÔÏ›· ÛÙȘ ηÈÓÔ‡ÚÁȘ ÙÔ˘˜ ·ÙÚ›‰Â˜, ·Ú¿ ÙȘ ·ÓÙÈÍÔfiÙËÙ˜ Ô˘ ·ÓÙÈÌÂÙÒÈ˙·Ó, ˘Ô̤ÓÔÓÙ·˜ ÙȘ ηÎÔ˘¯›Â˜, Î·È ÙȘ ÂÚÈÔÚÈṲ̂Ó˜ ËÁ¤˜ ÂÛfi‰ˆÓ, ‰ÈfiÙÈ Ë ›ÛÙË ¶√∆∂ ‰ÂÓ ·ÌÊÈÙ·Ï·ÓÙ‡ÂÙ·È. ∞ÓÙ›ıÂÙ· ·fi ÙȘ ∂ÏÏËÓÈΤ˜ √Úıfi‰Ô͘ ∂ÎÎÏËۛ˜ Ù˘ ∂ÏÏ¿‰·˜, ÔÈ ÎÔÈÓfiÙËÙ¤˜ Ì·˜ ¤¯Ô˘Ó È‰Ú˘ı› Î·È Û˘ÓÙËÚÔ‡ÓÙ·È ·fi ÙȘ ÚÔÛ¿ıÂȘ Î·È ÙȘ ‰ˆÚ¤˜ ÙˆÓ ÈÛÙÒÓ ÂıÂÏÔÓÙÒÓ ÙˆÓ - ¯ˆÚ›˜ ηÌÌ›· ÔÈÎÔÓÔÌÈ΋ ·ÚÔ¯‹ ·fi ÙËÓ ∫˘‚¤ÚÓËÛË. ∞˜ ·Ó·ÚˆÙËıÔ‡ÌÂ, ·Ó ÔÈ ÚÔ¿ÙÔÚ¤˜ Ì·˜ ÌfiÚÂÛ·Ó Î·È ¤Î·Ó·Ó ÙfiÛ· ¤ÚÁ·, ͤÓÔÈ Û Ӥ˜ ·ÙÚ›‰Â˜, fiÛÔ „ËÏÔ› Ú¤ÂÈ Ó· Â›Ó·È ÔÈ ‰ÈÎÔ› Ì·˜ ÛÙfi¯ÔÈ ÁÈ· Ó· ·Ó·Ù‡ÍÔ˘ÌÂ Î·È Ó· ÂÂÎÙ›ÓÔ˘Ì ÙÔ fiÚ·Ì¿ ÙÔ˘˜ ‰ÔÍ·Û›·˜ Î·È ‰È¿‰ÔÛ˘ ÙÔ˘ ÏfiÁÔ˘ ÙÔ˘ £ÂÔ‡? ¢ÂÓ ÙÔ ÔÊ›ÏÔ˘Ì ÛÙË ÌÓ‹ÌË ÙÔ˘˜? ∂›Ì·ÛÙ Ôχ Ù˘¯ÂÚÔ› Â‰Ò ÛÙË ∫ÔÈÓfiÙËÙ· ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¡ÈÎÔÏ¿Ô˘ ‰ÈfiÙÈ ¤¯Ô˘Ì ÔÏÏÔ‡˜ ·ÊÔÛȈ̤ÓÔ˘˜ ÂıÂÏÔÓÙ¤˜ ÔÈ ÔÔ›ÔÈ ˘ËÚÂÙÔ‡Ó Ù˘ ‰È¿ÊÔÚ˜ ·ÔÛÙÔϤ˜ ÙÔ˘ Ì ¢¯·Ú›ÛÙËÛË. ∂›Ó·È ˘Â‡ı˘ÓÔÈ ÁÈ· ÙËÓ Î·Ï‹ ÏÂÈÙÔ˘ÚÁ›· ÙˆÓ ¤ÚÁˆÓ Ô˘ ÂÈÙÂÏÔ‡ÓÙ·È ÛÙËÓ ÂÎÎÏËÛ›· Ì·˜ . ∞˘Ù¿ Ù· ¿ÙÔÌ· Û˘Ó¯›˙Ô˘Ó Ó· ˘ËÚÂÙÔ‡Ó Î·È ÙÔ ·Ú¿‰ÂÈÁÌ¿ ÙÔ˘˜ ·ÎÔÏÔ˘ıÔ‡Ó Î·È Ù· ·È‰È¿ ÙÔ˘˜, ‰ÈfiÙÈ ‚Ú›ÛÎÔ˘Ó ÈηÓÔÔ›ËÛË Ì ÙÔ Ó· ‰ÔÍ¿˙Ô˘Ó Î·È Ó· ¢¯·ÚÈÛÙÔ‡Ó ÙÔ £Âfi ¯ÚËÛÈÌÔÔÈÒÓÙ·˜ ÙȘ ÂȉÂÍÈfiÙËÙ¤˜ ÙÔ˘˜, Ô˘ ∂ΛÓÔ˜ ÙÔ˘˜ ¯¿ÚÈÛÂ. °ÓˆÚ›˙Ô˘Ó fiÙÈ ·ÓÙ·ÌÔ›‚ÔÓÙ·È ÂÚÈÛÛfiÙÂÚÔ fiÙ·Ó ‰›ÓÔ˘Ó ·Ú¿ fiÙ·Ó ·›ÚÓÔ˘Ó. ∞ÔÚÚ›ÙÔ˘Ó ÙËÓ È‰¤· Ó· ÎÂÚ‰›ÛÔ˘Ó ¤ÍÙÚ· ¯Ú‹Ì·Ù· ·fi ÙËÓ ‰Ô˘ÏÂÈ¿ ÙÔ˘˜ Î·È ÚÔÛʤÚÔ˘Ó ÙËÓ ÂÚÁ·Û›· ÙÔ˘˜ Î·È Ù· ¯Ú‹Ì·Ù¿ ÙÔ˘˜ ÛÙËÓ ÂÎÎÏËÛ›· ÙÔ˘˜. ∂ÓÂÚÁÒÓÙ·˜ Ì ·˘Ùfi ÙÔ ÙÚfiÔ, ˆ˜ ÃÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÔ› ·ÛÎÔ‡Ó ÙȘ ·Í›Â˜ Ù˘ πÔ˘‰·˚ÎÔ¯ÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÈ΋˜ ›ÛÙ˘: ·Á¿Ë Î·È ‚Ô‹ıÂÈ· ÚÔ˜ ÙÔÓ ÏËÛ›ÔÓ ÛÔ˘, ¤ÙÛÈ ¤Ú¯ÂÛ·È ÈÔ ÎÔÓÙ¿ ÛÙÔ £Âfi. ∂›Ó·È Ú¿ÁÌ·ÙÈ ¿ÍÈÔ ı·˘Ì·ÛÌÔ‡ ˆ˜ οÔÈÔÈ ¿ÓıÚˆÔÈ ÂÓÒ ÂÚÁ¿˙ÔÓÙ·È Î·ıËÌÂÚÈÓ¿ Ì ϋÚ˜ ˆÚ¿ÚÈÔ, ¤¯Ô˘Ó ÔÈÎÔÁ¤ÓÂȘ, ÂÓ ÙÔ‡ÙÔȘ ‚Ú›ÛÎÔ˘Ó ¯ÚfiÓÔ Ó· Û˘ÌÌÂÙ¤¯Ô˘Ó ÛÙȘ Continued on page 11 PAGE 4 KOINONIA July-August/πÔ‡ÏÈÔ˜-∞‡ÁÔ˘ÛÙÔ˜, 2008 COMMUNITY NEWS - ∫Oπ¡O∆π∫∞ ¡∂A Blessings and Best Wishes to our 2008 Graduates “Keep your cherished hopes and dreams shining strong until they all come true. The Community of Saint Nicholas was represented by Father Michael Pastrikos, Jimmy Kosmas and Tina Harris. The theme of the Assembly was, “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.” (John 10:16) The Saint Nicholas delegation arrived on Monday, May 12th for the official opening. Metropolitan Evangelos welcomed the Assembly warmly and continued by introducing the main speaker, Dr. Elias Patsavos, Professor of Canon Law at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline Massachusetts. Dr. Patsavos spoke on the topic, “Welcoming the Un-Churched: How the Church Ought to Be.” That evening, the delegation attended the Grand Banquet where over 500 people attended and many local Orthodox were honored. On Tuesday the business meeting was held where many topics were discussed including preparations for the biannual 2008 National Clergy Laity Congress to be held in Washington, DC. As a token of his pastoral love, the Metropolitan presented to each attendant a copy of the newly released book written by our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew entitled, “Encountering the Mystery.” The St. Nicholas ”DIAMONDS” The St. Nicholas Diamonds will hold a yard sale on Saturday, September 13th on the church parking lot from 8 am to 12 noon. Gavrilis, CEO The Greektown CDC would like to congratulate the St. Nicholas Festival Committee and the many volunteers for producing an outstanding festival. This year’s festival brought thousands of tourists to our community. They enjoyed our cultural events, religious exhibits, dined on great Greek food and listened to beautiful Greek music. The Greektown CDC has recently created a Sanitation Committee, which is focusing on trash and housing concerns in the community. The committee needs your help so that we can achieve our vision of Greektown! Also, our monthly community clean-up has scheduled a dumpster for Saturday, July 12th and August 9th from 9am to 1pm located at the 700 block of Quail Street. Please remember not to dump your trash in the street if the dumpster is full. The Greektown CDC also hosts Citizens on Patrol walks in partnership with the Southeastern Police District. The next COP dates are July 2nd, 16th and 30th. Please call John E. Gavrilis or Jason Filippou at 410-327-3306 for details. The Greektown CDC recently sponsored over 100 neighborhood kids to attend the Buddies Night, June 18, 2008 Orioles game. Thanks to the Baltimore Orioles and all of the Greektown businesses that helped in sponsoring this event The summer months are upon us. Please look in on your elderly neighbors and ensure they are OK. Help them with any outdoor chores and shopping needs. Help is needed to monitor the CCTV cameras at the police district. Contact John E. Gavrilis or Jason Filippou if you can volunteer one hour per month. Believe in your community! John E. More than 50 of our youngsters ages 3 -11 enthusiastically participated in “Friendship Trek” and learned more about Jesus, our Forever Friend. Our program could not have been a huge success without the cooperation and input of many individuals: the religious instruction of our spiritual leader Father Michael; the creative and spirited presentations of our student leaders Krystala Skordalos, Chrissy Cossis, Mary Kamos, Nick Halkias and Maria Stavrakis; The circle guides - members of GOYA, who escorted and bonded with the youngsters throughout each day; and all our young adults helped in decorating the premises to create a campsite atmosphere in keeping with our theme. The colorful snacks and nutritious lunches were generously donated by members of the Community and prepared by dedicated ladies, members of the DIAMONDS, who have always enjoyed working with our children. The smooth running of our program from registering the youngsters to providing an inviting physical environment for us was made possible by the devoted staff of Saint Nicholas. We give our heartfelt thanks to all the parents of our youth who made it possible for their children to take part in this funfilled, educational experience, who helped during the program, and who contributed monetarily. Many thanks to our Philoptochos whose monetary donation enriched our program. We were delighted to have Presbytera Dimitra (Toula) assisting wherever needed. The Vacation Bible School would not have been possible without the careful planning and professional expertise of Michelle Kaminaris who supervised it. We have assessed the program as successful based on our observations of the children learning about Jesus and our faith, where new friendships developed, and the complimentary comments of parents and students who wanted the session to continue for several more weeks. We are grateful to all who played a part in “Friendship Trek”. The result of dedication and true teamwork! The V.B.S. Dear Saint Nicholas Vacation Bible School My family and I wanted to extend a wholehearted thank you for providing my daughters, Hannah and Louisa, with a memorable experience. At first my girls were hesitant about attending camp but after the first day, they wished it lasted longer. Already, they want to sign-up for next year. It is important for my daughters to understand the Orthodox teachings and we are thankful that they had this opportunity with such capable instructions. Sincerely, John & Christina Hofferbert VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL NEWS PAGE 8 KOINONIA July-August/πÔ‡ÏÈÔ˜-∞‡ÁÔ˘ÛÙÔ˜, 2008 STEWARDSHIP PLEDGES FOR 2008 July-August/πÔ‡ÏÈÔ˜-∞‡ÁÔ˘ÛÙÔ˜, 2008 KOINONIA STEWARDSHIP PLEDGES FOR 2008 PLEDGED TOTALS: $208,838.00; PAYMENTS: $165,882.00; BALANCE: 43,016.00 ∂˘¯fiÌÂÛÙ Û fiÏÔ˘˜ Û·˜ ∫·Ïfi ∫·ÏÔη›ÚÈ!
