KOINONIA MARCH/ ª∞ƒΔπO™ 2015 Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter Lets prepare ourselves for · spiritual Easter! We are already in the first week of Great Lent. This is a time (forty days before Holy Week and Pascha) in which we are reminded to focus on fasting, prayer, meditation, almsgiving, and most of all on Jesus Christ and our spiritual journey with him. Let’s look at what St. Simeon of Thessaloniki said about fasting. “Fasting is the work of God, and it is this work that takes place in the arena of repentance.” We battle our own problems in life, and if we take the words of St. Paul (2 Cor. 10:4), the weapons of our warfare are not carnal; rather, the weapon given to us by our Lord is his commandment to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). This commandment is the basis on which we will be judged by Christ at his awesome second coming. When we see the least one hungry, do we feed him and love him? When we see the least one in prison, do we visit him? And when we see the least one homeless and a stranger, do we do anything to change his life, and do we help him and show him God’s love? If we do any of these tasks, if we give all that we possess but do not do it in response to Christ’s commandment, we have gained nothing (1 Cor. 13:3). Great Lent is a time of fasting and prayer, and it’s our responsibility to focus on our spiritual awareness of Jesus Christ and our commitment to him. During Lent the Church reminds us of the depth of the love that Jesus has for us. And during Holy Week, we relive the Passion of Christ and everything that Jesus endured for us. So what we really need to do during Lent is to apply a little extra spiritual discipline in our lives: more prayer, Bible reading, church attendance, fasting, confession, receiving the Sacraments, and charity to others. If we do these tasks, we will begin to see a beautiful transformation in our lives. Once you take that step to follow Christ, then you must follow him with all your heart and soul to the end of your life. There are no ifs, ands, or buts. Your faith in Christ is either hot or cold. There is no in between. Christ said in John 14:23, “If a man loves me, he must keep my words.” In this verse there is no competitive spirit: we simply cannot serve two masters. We must choose either God or mammon. I conclude with the Vesper hymn that summarizes our intent and reminds us of our goal in life: “Let us set out joy upon the season of the fast, and prepare ourselves for spiritual combat. Let us purify our soul and cleanse our flesh; and as we fast from food, let us abstain also from every passion. Rejoicing in the virtues of the Spirit, may we persevere with love, and so be counted worthy to see the solemn Passion of Christ our God and with great spiritual gladness to behold his Holy Passover (Pascha).” May you have a blessed Great Lenten season, and may our Resurrected Lord truly open your eyes to your future life in Christ. “Fasting is the work of God, and it is this work that takes place in the arena of repentance.” GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA METROPOLIS OF NEW JERSEY 2 K O I N ø N I ∞ MARCH-ª∞ƒΔπO™ 2015 GOYA GOYAns’ NEWS Outing at Avalanche Xpress Success! MARCH-ª∞ƒΔπO™ 2015 K O I N ø N I ∞ 3 MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRESIDENT MHNYMA TOY ¶ƒO∂¢ƒOÀ Δ∏™ ∫Oπ¡OΔ∏Δ∞™ Dear Parishioners, March is the beginning of spring and a time for renewal. As we journey through the forty days of Great Lent, let us take time to reflect upon our spiritual needs. The soul is hungry for a connection with God, and the liturgical calendar for March and April provides many opportunities to worship. Another way to connect with God is getting more involved in the daily work of our church. The youth ministry programs— YAL, GOYA, JOY, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Greek School PTA, as well as our youth parish dance organizations, Ta Ellinakia and the Hellenic Golden Coins—would benefit from increased attendance of our youth and parent participation. These ministries and parish organizations are administered entirely by dedicated volunteers. One of the significant missions of our church is to keep our youth involved in our community. Together, we can do this by expanding our current programs and introducing new ones in which our youth will build a stronger connection with God and lasting friendships among the themselves, while also having fun. To keep these programs viable, we need young adults, parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, godparents, and anyone wishing to volunteer to come forward and ask what can they do to help our ministries and parish organizations flourish. During this Lenten period, take the time to evaluate your commitments and ask yourself if you can dedicate some of your time to the future of community. In Christ, Demos Anastasiades, Parish Council President ∞Á·ËÙÔ› ∂ÓÔÚ›Ù˜, √ ª¿ÚÙÈÔ˜ Â›Ó·È Ë ·Ú¯‹ Ù˘ ÕÓÔÈ͢, ηÈÚfi˜ ÁÈ· ·Ó·Ó¤ˆÛË. ∂Âȉ‹ ÂÈÛÂÚ¯fiÌ·ÛÙ ÛÙÔ Ù·Í›‰È ÙˆÓ 40 ËÌÂÚÒÓ Ù˘ ªÂÁ¿Ï˘ ΔÂÛÛ·Ú·ÎÔÛÙ‹˜, ·˜ ¿ÚÔ˘Ì ÙÔ ¯ÚfiÓÔ, Ó· ÛÎÂÊıԇ̠ÙȘ ÓÂ˘Ì·ÙÈΤ˜ ·Ó¿ÁΘ Ì·˜. ∏ „˘¯‹ ÂÈÓ¿ÂÈ ÁÈ· Û‡Ó‰ÂÛË Ì ÙÔ £Âfi, Î·È ÙÔ “§ÂÈÙÔ˘ÚÁÈÎfi ∏ÌÂÚÔÏfiÁÈÔ ¶ÚfiÁÚ·ÌÌ·” ÙÔ˘ ª·ÚÙ›Ô˘ Î·È ÙÔ˘ ∞ÚÈÏ›Ô˘ ÂÚÈÏ·Ì‚¿ÓÂÈ ÔÏϤ˜ ¢ηÈڛ˜ ÁÈ· ÂÎÎÏËÛÈ·ÛÌfi. We would like to thank everyone for their donations to and support for the Annual Apokreatiko Glendi. All proceeds from this event went to support the Philoxenia House. The home continues to help those who are being treated at hospitals in Baltimore. On Sunday, March 1, a memorial service and coffee hour will take place to honor the memory of our deceased members and those we have assisted with burials. May their memory be eternal! Join us for our First Annual Festival of Tables. This event promises to be an afternoon of fellowship and surprises. Please look for the flyer in this month’s newsletter for further information. (See our ad on page 13) Everyone will soon be receiving our mailing with information about the philanthropic missions of the Philoptochos. And once again we will ask for your assistance in helping us to continue the tradition of decorating the Kouvouklion, which carries the Precious Body of Christ on Great and Holy Friday. All remaining funds go to helping those less fortunate. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only beloved son, that whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 ). John E. Gavrilis Greektown was noted in the 2014 Annual Report of the City’s Planning Dept. The report highlighted the O’Donnell Square at Greektown development along Oldham Street, which has been underway since 2010. They described our community as a rapidly growing, flourishing neighborhood. The Greektown CDC has been the community’s leading supporter of this project. The new homes are beautiful and priced right. The development has attracted many wonderful families to our community. On February 26, 2015, the City Planning Commission had scheduled a hearing for a zoning change to the O’Donnell Square development from an M-3 zoning district to a B-3–1 zoning district. This change is consistent with the developer’s plans in our community for residential housing and other small-business use. The Greektown CDC is on record with the city supporting this zoning change. We will continue to keep the community informed of any future development plans. I spoke with the city, whose officials agreed that the mural along the Eastern Avenue underpass is in bad condition. A meeting will be scheduled to ascertain how to proceed with getting it repaired or replaced. There isn’t funding currently available, but the city wants to come up with a plan to fix it. We will keep you advised of the outcome. PEMCO fire. This comment was made by the PEMCO consultant AB Associates: “The PEMCO fire turned out to be less of an event than the Fire Department turnout would lead people to believe. It appears to be related to a homeless person in the building. The building re-securing [of] the site and working with the Fire Department to give them a sense of the underground nature of the environmental cap so they understand the lack of any above ground contaminants. It remains our hope that the approval process that began over a year ago can reach a conclusion that allows the environmental cleanup and demolition to proceed.” The Baltimore City Department of Transportation responded to our request for establishing a quiet zone to address the train horn noise. The request by the Greektown CDC originated with residents who reside near the track area and asked that we intercede on their behalf. Several contacts were made with the city, and a community meeting to discuss the issues was held. In response to the Greektown CDC’s request, the city contracted an independent firm to study the noise level for the community and the train horn noise. The results of the extensive study as noted by the city are, in summary, it has been “determined that the existing conditions for the Fait Avenue railroad crossing does not warrant any further consideration for establishment of a quiet zone by the City.” The Greektown CDC will be discussing our options, which include meeting with the landlord of the Crown Cork and Seal private property that the grade crossing is on. The Greektown CDC continues to conduct daily canvasses of the neighborhood and request city services. The city has responded to our calls by picking up bulk trash, cleaning up illegally dumped trash, mattresses, furniture, etc., and has responded by fixing pot holes. However, it is important that the residents and businesses also conduct surveys of their neighborhood and report violations to 311. The City is responsive to our calls, but you must also call to report violations or need for City services.
