Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church PHAROS Celebrating Our 14th Year of Publication! JULY-AUGUST, 2006 “MOST HOLY THEOTOKOS PRAY AND INTERCEDE FOR US.” The month of August is a very holy time of the year. We commemorate three great events—The Transfiguration of Christ, the Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary, and the beheading of St. John the Baptist. When you think of August though, you primarily think about the Panagia, the blessed Virgin Mary. Panagia was prophesied many centuries before her birth. That is why the life of the Panagia (the all holy one) is in the center of our Christian faith. She was instrumental in restoring man back to God, through Jesus Christ our God. In the mindset of Christian doctrine and practice, the image of the Panagia is placed in very high regard and honor. All the faithful call upon the Virgin Mary for help. There is not one service that is conducted without due honor given to the Virgin Mary. As Greek Orthodox Christians, we have a special place in our hearts for the Blessed Mother. She has protected the Orthodox Faith from destruction from the enemy. She has helped many times to enlighten the world and to protect Holy Orthodoxy. The period of the Fast of Panagia (August 1-15), sometimes referred to as the “Summer Lent”, reminds us of all these things about the Panagia. During the Supplication Services, the Paraklesis we pour out our hearts and cry out for help, we convey our pain and anguish because we consider her to be our spiritual mother. The Blessed Mother hears all our prayers and comes to our aid. She makes only one request, and asks us for only one supplication to be granted: “I know that you want me to grant you your supplications and answer your prayers, but I ask one thing of you, Please listen to my Son and do what He tells you in your heart and you will find salvation.” Let us all hear and follow the Virgin Mary’s request. This is the message of the first fifteen days of August. The Virgin Mary raises all of humanity upwards, but especially she raises womanhood up to the honor it has and deserves. All women have a special relationship with the Blessed Mother, because they share in womanhood. May this special relationship help all of mankind to come to the knowledge of the truth about God and to worship Him with all their hearts and souls. I pray you have a blessed summer filled with health, relaxation, rest and happiness. “À¶∂ƒ ∞°πA £∂O∆O∫∂, ¶ƒ∂™µ∂À∂ À¶∂ƒ ∏ªø¡.” √ ̋ӷ˜ ∞‡ÁÔ˘ÛÙÔ˜ ÂÚÈÏ·Ì‚¿ÓÂÈ ÛËÌ·ÓÙÈΤ˜ ıÚËÛ΢ÙÈΤ˜ ÂÔÚÙ¤˜. ∂ÔÚÙ¿˙Ô˘Ì ÙÚ›· ÌÂÁ¿Ï· ÁÂÁÔÓfiÙ· Ù˘ ¶›ÛÙ˘ Ì·˜—ÙËÓ ªÂÙ·ÌfiÚʈÛË ÙÔ˘ ™ˆÙ‹ÚÔ˜, ÙËÓ ∫Ô›ÌËÛË Ù˘ £ÂÔÙfiÎÔ˘, Î·È ÙÔÓ ∞ÔÎÂÊ·ÏÈÛÌfi ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ πˆ¿ÓÓÔ˘ ÙÔ˘ µ·ÙÈÛÙÔ‡. CHOIR NEWS It was a surprise and a great honor to be chosen as this year’s Choir member to receive the cross in recognition of service to the Choir. I am always thankful for the gift of my voice and am proud to sing for Saint Nicholas Church to the glory of God. Best wishes always, and thanks. Jim Kimos GREEKTOWN CDC John E. Gavrilis, The Board of Directors and the staff of the Greektown CDC extend congratulations to all the festival workers in making the 2006 St. Nicholas Greek Folk Festival a success. We also would like to thank the Orioles and the many businesses who sponsored the Greektown kids to see an Oriole’s game during Buddies Night. Great news! The zoning for the new development of single family homes in the 100 block and 800 block of Oldham Street has been approved. The addition of 1000 new homes in Greektown will be an economic boost for our community’s businesses and housing values. The surveillance cameras along with the Greektown CDC foot patrol officers in Greektown have been successful in keeping our community safe. We have reduced much of the loitering in our community with the removal of one of the bus routes. We continue to patrol the bus corners with the help of the Maryland Transit Administration and Baltimore police. We still need your help on monitoring the cameras. Call John E. Gavrilis if you wish to volunteer. Special thanks to Johns Hopkins Bayview for their continued monetary contribution to our public safety initiative. We are working to relieve some of the traffic congestion in Greektown. Four way stop signs have been installed in several intersections. Head in parking is being considered on Oldham Street to increase the number of parking spaces by 50% and one way traffic on Fleet and Foster Avenues are being studied. If you have any questions concerning the projects discussed in this article please call the Greektown CDC office at 410-3273306. Believe in your community!! tumes, as well as Ms. Nora Kefalas for making our red belts. Congratulations to all of our graduates and we hope everyone has a great summer. Please accept my apologies for the delay, which was due in part to our former sales rep from Lifetouch who did not inform us from the beginning in which program to set up the book layout. Therefore, we had to go back and re-enter all the information in the compatible program. Second, my full time work and my family’s schedule also played a role in the delay of the printing of the Album. I was coming home too late to run up to the church to finish this project. Thus, I tried to finish the corrections on my home computer. My biggest fault is that of being a perfectionist. If something didn’t appear right, I would go back again and again to get it right. I wanted to make sure all aspects of our Church life’s first 50 years were showcased. That made it hard for me to delegate. Again, my deepest apologies to all of you who ordered an album or bought a dedication page in the album or just simply expressed an interest. With God’s blessings, you will have a hard copy of this beautiful anniversary album in your hands by October 2006. PAGE 4 PHAROS/º∞ƒO™ JULY-∞UGUST—2006 FROM THE SAINT NICHOLAS GREEK FOLK FESTIVAL 2006 To our Community: It is our esteem honor to have served as festival chairpersons this year. Since our appointment in September, we have seen the best of our community, rallying together for the well being of our Church, the advancement of our culture, and the future of our faith. We thank all those who helped us with making the festival a success. Thank you. Of course, the Greek Folk Festival could not occur each year without the volunteers in the kitchens, food lines, booths, and elsewhere who tirelessly sacrifice so much for our community. They are the backbone of this Festival and this Church. We cannot forget the one who keeps us in line, our church secretary, Ms. Maria Salpeas. As the book of James reminds us “it is not enough just to have faith. Faith that does not show itself by good deeds is no faith at all.” The good deeds abound, and we are forever grateful for the selfless service of St. Nicholas’ committed volunteers. This years first place winner of the fifteen thousand dollar prize that was won by Mr. Peter Angelos was donated back to our church. We would like to send a special thank you to him. Again, many thanks to everyone for your support of the Greek Folk Festival and St. Nicholas. God bless.
