Studi a Cheltenham, Londra, Cambridge. Insegnamento superiore a Notting Hill, Oxford e Londra.
Durante il soggiorno londinese (1880-1898) tiene pubbliche letture al British Museum, diviene
membro del direttivo della Classical Association, ottiene titoli accademici onorari dalle Università
di Aberdeen e Durham; dal 1896 è 'corresponding member' del Deutsches Archäologisches Institut
di Berlino. Nel 1898 ritorna a Cambridge (Newnham College) come 'Resident Lecturer' per
l'archeologia classica, fino al 1903. 1919-22, insegna Russo al Newnham (dal 1920, anche
Spagnolo). Vive dal 1922 al 1926 a Parigi; nel 1926 si trasferisce a Londra.
