Carmine D’Argenio, Presidente FCCI Executive Director’s Message In the cold, biting days of January everyone looks forward to the spring. In Quebec, spring is the proverbial icing on the cake, the time when everything gets sweeter. With that in mind, I am pleased to announce that our second annual Sugar Shack evening at the Cabane à Sucre Au Pied de Cochon is only a few weeks away. This intimate event is our way of rewarding our members and friends for their "sweetness" and generosity by inviting them to something sugary and fun. The coming year will be filled with exciting events such as this one, our traditional fundraising activities and some new activities on the FCCI calendar planned for the summer and autumn months. Keeping in touch with you is very important to us and for that reason we are overjoyed to PG 2 27° Ballo de Governatori announce the launch of our improved website. Now with just a click of the mouse you will remain up to date on the Foundation's activities and initiatives and you will have access to information regarding our members. As we further make our way in this information age, we are embracing technology as a way to help the planet and become more "green" and sustainable. For that reason, this will be the last Infondazione newsletter to be printed. If you wish to continue receiving a paper version, you must complete the attached coupon and return it to us as soon as possible. We cannot be certain what 2012 has in store for us on a global level. These are difficult economic and political times. However, they are not more difficult than the times our parents and grandparents have experienced and that should serve as a reminder of why we are here, living in this community, working together toward the hope of a better future. In 2011 we saw civil wars and mudslides, we saw earthquakes and floods -- but 2011 also showed us many victories: independence in PG 3 Spotlight on Sam Scalia Sudan to help us appreciate democracy, a royal wedding to help us believe in love, the first artificial organ transplant to help us trust in science and a successful NASA mission to mars to remind us to reach for the sky and to dream of the stars. We are taking these lessons with us into 2012, and if we dream and work together, anything is possible. The author Mary Shelley once wrote, “The beginning is always today.” What a comforting thought! This very moment is the start of something special and everything that is to come is as of yet unwritten. If today is the first page, the opening paragraph, then let us make sure to work toward a happy ending. Counting on your continued support, I wish you all the best for 2012. Anna Giampà, FCCI Executive Director PG 5 Spotlight on Benito Migliorati PG 7 Cocktail di Natale www. fcciq .com Volare fino alla luna: The 27th annual Governors’ Ball internationally acclaimed artist, Jacynthe, touched many with a moving performance of the Etta James classic “At Last”. The event raised over $325,000 for the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation, with guests and governors reaffirming their commitment to support health, education, culture and social causes. Among the night’s honoured guests were: H.E. Andrea Meloni, Italian ambassador to Canada, Hon. Amato L. One of the major events on the FCCI calendar took place on Saturday, October 22nd, 2011, as the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation rolled out the red carpet to celebrate its newest members at the 27th Annual Governors’ Ball. The Foundation would like to thank the organizing committee, the president and honorary president of the Ball as well as the many generous sponsors who made the evening possible. We hope to see you all again next year! More than 650 guests attended the black-tie event at the Sheraton Laval, which saw the FCCI welcome 9 New Governors, 3 Successors and 3 Friends of the Foundation. The event was organized under the presidency of Tony Loffreda, Head National Client Group/Quebec - RBC Royal Bank and the honorary presidency of Sam Scalia, President and Founder of Samcon. The theme to this year’s Governors’ Ball was "Volare fino alla luna" (inspired by the Frank Sinatra song), and this has become something of an inspiration to the Foundation. FCCI President, Carmine D'Argenio, reiterated the point during his speech, conveying that the Foundation will continue to aim for the moon in everything that it does. In a room that sparkled and glowed with the glamour and excitement of the '40s and ‘50s, the Governors’ Ball paid tribute to the period of renewal that followed WWII. Professional dancers Jean-Marie Messier and Francis Bolduc entertained guests, performing fox trot and swing numbers. Not to be outdone, Paul Chacra’s 1945 “Big Band” kept revellers glued to the dance floor throughout the night, while From left to right: Carmine and Rosine D'Argenio, Sam Scalia and Diana Ferrara-Scalia, Angie and Tony Loffreda. Amato L. Berardi. Spotlight on Sam Scalia Renowned builder, true innovator & very generous philanthropist -Carmine D’Argenio- FCCI President Mr. Sam Scalia, Honorary President of the 27th annual FCCI Governors’ Ball is celebrating 20 years of success as President and Founder of Samcon, a booming residential construction company founded in 1991. A commitment to quality construction and an instinct for innovation have been at the root of Scalia’s success, and these traits may very well have been inherited from his father, Davide Scalia. After all, Scalia’s father and uncles were all in the construction business, some going back as far as 1957. It goes without saying that construction has been a part of Sam Scalia’s life from an early age. Scalia attended college in California and completed his university degree at McGill University’s Desautel Faculty of Management. He married Diana Ferrara, and the pair settled down and had children. When his children were asked to describe their father, their answers were eclectic, but representative of the man most of us know: “He’s always smiling and positive,” they said, adding, “We love his squishy hugs.” Samcon’s mission is urban redevelopment: revitalizing and promoting promising neighbourhoods in the Montreal area. To date, Scalia has built more than 3,000 condos at more than 80 project sites in Laval and Montreal. If you asked Scalia the reason behind his company’s success, he would give the credit to his dedicated team of professionals. However, his vision plays a central role. “Who else but Sam Scalia would come to the East of the city and develop where no one wants to be?” asked Joey Saputo, describing Sam’s ability to see promise in oft-neglected neighbourhoods. Currently, Scalia has 15 urban redevelopments underway. This is especially impressive considering that the company began with a modest 8-unit project in 1991. Scalia wants to become the best builder in Montreal, and he is committed to helping Montrealers own a property on the island. Christian Bergeron, Executive Vice-President of Samcon says the company leader has very clear directives: “We work for the community and we must give back to the community”. He clearly lives by his word. In 2000, Scalia became a Governor of the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation, and was delighted to participate in the FCCI’s financing campaign to build the Leonardo Da Vinci Centre — a concrete symbol of an entire community’s immense effort and determination. He has since been actively involved in many FCCI fundraising activities and is also a generous supporter of CIPBA’s Bursary Program, helping fund ItalianCanadian university students’ education. Ultimately, you could say that Scalia is helping to build a better community, one brick at a time. Président Benito Migliorati: L’Ospitalità e le “savoir faire” sono il successo di un leader This year, the FCCI had the great pleasure of recognizing Mr. Benito Migliorati for his generosity and involvement in our organization and in the community at large. and cultural activities. Migliorati is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and has been a Governor of the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation since 1990. Born in Umbria, Italy (a region known for its delectable wine and gastronomy - elements which would feature prominently in Migliorati’s future!), Benito immigrated to Switzerland in 1958 to attend the famous Hotel School in Lausanne. He would soon put his education to the test, working throughout Europe in the hospitality and restaurant fields, landing management positions in South England and London by the age of 24. Nevertheless, Migliorati’s destiny was in the new world, and in 1969, he immigrated to Montreal to further his career. Mr. Migliorati was recognized for his devotion to the Italian community at the Foundation’s 24th annual Golf Tournament last June 20, 2011. In 1986, his experience and passion for the hospitality industry would reach its zenith, when he bought a beautiful piece of land on the shores of the Lac des Deux Montagnes. This land would soon be the location for what is today one of the most highly esteemed hotels in the industry: Château Vaudreuil, a 5-star hotel that he continues to run with the help of his wife and eldest daughter. “One of the main reasons for Benito’s success is his insatiable passion for the hospitality business. He never stops thinking of ways to improve his hotel,” says Chris Anatasiou, a business partner for 16 years. Enormous success in the hotel industry, however, has been matched by his philanthropic efforts within the community. He is a generous contributor to the Leonardo Da Vinci Centre, supporting the Center’s mission to strengthen Italian-Canadian bonds through social, sporting Giuseppe Borsellino and Peter Pomponio present plaque of recognition to Benito Migliorati. Giuseppe Borsellino.
