Santa Maria Antica church Madonna di Campiglio Adamello Brenta
Madonna di Campiglio Val Rendena M entioned in parchments and old maps since ancient times, Madonna di Campiglio has an history deeply rooted in a mysterious past. At the beginning it was a border zone and a place along an important transit way through the Alps; the legend tells that two Emperors passes through it: Carlo Magno, who gave his name to the Pass, and then Federico Barbarossa. The documents cited “Santa Maria di Campei” in the end of the twelfth century (1188) when a certain Raimondo built an hospice-monastery, with a little church dedicated to Mary, to give a place to stay to foreigners and pilgrims. Then, this hospice-monastery became the property of the Trento Cathedral till 1515, and then it became gradually less important. After three centuries of decline, in 1868 it was bought by the entrepreneur Giovanni Battista Righi of Strembo, who built the first hotel of Madonna in the place of the crumbling buildings and the old hospice: the “ Campiglio alpine resort in Trentino”, inaugurated on June 1, 1875. It was a summer resort because the Madonna di Campiglio of that time took the Kurort (the summer hill station) as an example. In 1872 the members of SAT (Trentino mountain association) gathered in the Righi alpine resort , founding the society in Madonna di Campiglio. Some years later, Righi built at his expense the road that connects the resort to Pinzolo, considered one of the most beautiful roads of the Alps. In 1886 the alpine resort, after being destroyed by a great fire, was bought by Franz Josef Oesterreicher, owner of the Grand Hotel Trento, who changed the alpine resort in the first Hotel Des Alpes. Thanks to this forward-looking entrepreneur, Madonna di Campiglio became the summer resort of the Habsburg Court. The Princess Sissi of Bavaria stayed here for the first time in 1889 and she came back with the Emperor Francesco Giuseppe in 1894. They were used to walk in the woods, to dance the waltzs in the evening and to meet their entourage and courtier, as Vittoria Adelaide Maria Luisa, daughter of Queen Vittoria and Empress of Germany, and the archduke Alberto d’Asburgo, who was very fond of Madonna di Campiglio. So Madonna di Campiglio became the very refined resort of the aristocracy and the rich Austrian and Central European bourgeoisie, projecting towards a successful tourist future. On February 26, 1910, at the beginning of the winter tourism in the Alps, a group of “audacious” English skiers arrived in Campiglio. They went up to Monte Spinale with their skis and made the first official downhill in order to test the skiing potentiality of Madonna di Campiglio. The attempt was very good. After four days, before leaving Madonna di Campiglio, the English skiers declared: “If the Campiglio winter resort will grow, we’ll be the first to come and the last to leave”. For the first time Madonna di Campiglio imagines itself on skis. The first lift, which reached “Cima Dosson” top on the Spinale mountain from Malga Campo, in Campo Carlo Magno, opened in 1935, inaugurating the years of the “Madonna Bianca” (“White Madonna”) with the first ski races. In 1947 the Funivie Madonna di Campiglio lifts company was founded to promote skiing and the resort. Then it is recent history: fast changes, modern developments, a state-of the-art and wide ski area, that makes Madonna one of the most beautiful winter and summer tourist resort of the Alps. Val Rendena, which stretches from Madonna di Campiglio to Villa, is known as the 8 Canalone Miramonti: a worldwide ski run! P 8 lanned by the alpinist Bruno Detassis, the “Lord of Brenta” and also the director of the first ski school in Madonna di Campiglio in 1940, Canalone Miramonti is a legend of ski. It is a challenging and technical piste and in 1967 the first World Cup ski race in Italy took place here: on the podium the French triple Perillat, Jauffret, Lacroix. On this ski run, many World Cup and European Cup races took place, and also several editions of the 3Tre competition, the famous event born in 1948 and that in December 2013 will have its 60th birthday in Campiglio, with two men’s downhill races. On Canalone Miramonti, Ingemar Stenmark, the best skier of all times, won 8 races (5 special slaloms and 3 giant slaloms) and the best Italian skier Alberto Tomba won here in 1987, 1988 and 1995. The slope starts at 1725 m and arrives at 1545 m. It is 550 m long, with a descent of 180 m, a medium gradient of 27% and a maximum gradient of 60%. “Green Valley” because of the intense green of the nature in which it is immersed. Old-growth forests and woodlands descend the slopes and brush up to the quaint alpine towns and villages with their hidden treasures of art and history: medieval churches with frescos, dating back to the second half of the 15th and first half of the 16th centuries, by the Baschenis, travelling painters from Averara, in the province of Bergamo; roadside shrines; museums featuring the customs and traditional crafts of the Val Rendena area; historic town centers that preserve their ancient architecture; squares and fountains that one happens upon when walking through the narrow streets of the towns; and landscapes of rare beauty in which nature and man’s handiwork come together as one. 10 Our Lady of Europe 10 T he church of Our Lady of Europe, inaugurated on August 5, 2004 expresses the faith of the community of Campiglio and represents the history of the resort through the paintings of the artist Daniela Casoni, commissioned by don Ernesto Villa. From the legendary transit of Carlo Magno ahead, the spiritual roots of Europe became close to the popular devotion. Inside the church you can admire the picture of the Madonna of Europe in blue, the color of Mary, but also of the old country. Near the Madonna, there are the patrons of Europe: Benedetto da Norcia, Brigida di Svezia, Cirillo e Metodio, Teresa della Croce and Caterina da Siena. In front of them there are the European people addressed to Mary by Carlo Magno on horseback and by San Vigilio, patron of Trentino. In a painting, which is a copy of the original painting of the Algeciras church in Gibraltar, the Virgin of Europe is depicted. 5 Opening time: 10 am-5 pm, on Saturaday and on Sunday Guided visits on reservation Discovering the history, the art and the culture of Madonna di Campiglio. It was built near the previous church (founded in the end of the twelfth and re-built in the last years of the fifteenth century), part of the old hospice and tore down by Franz Joseph Oesterreicher in those years to enlarge the Hotel Des Alpes. The Austrian nobility and the Emperor Francesco Giuseppe himself offered the pulpit, the confessional, and the wooden planking of the choir place with the most popular Saints figures, and some colored windows. On one of these windows, there is the Apostle S. Bartolomeo, the other patron saint of this church, who holds the dagger of his martyrdom; on another one, there is the figure of Carlo Magno. On the benches there are the names of the benefactors, written in Ghotic, and on the floor there is the tomb of Franz Joseph Oesterreicher (1848-1909) In the Santa Maria Antica church, there are some important artistic elements: the old crucifix in Nordic style, dating back to the twelfth century, the triptych of the Madonna with Child and the Saints (S. Barbara and S. Caterina) in the middle of the chancel and the wooden sculpture of the Virgin called “Vergine del Fico” of the fourteenth century. There are some episodes of the Virgin life on the altar coming from the old church of the hospice (the oldest altar of this kind in the whole Trentino) and some paintings of religious figures on the opposite wall. During the centuries, many pilgrims addressed to this majestic and kind Virgin Mary, depicted in a generous act of helping a tired pilgrim. The Hofer theatre 5 T he Salone Hofer, inside the Des Alpes hotel, takes the name from the painter Gottfried Hofer, coming from Bolzano, who painted the walls of the great parlour inside, between 1897 and 1898. The work was commissioned to him in 1897 by Franz Joseph Osterreicher, who purchased the alpine resort of Madonna di Campiglio some years before and turned it into the Des Alpes hotel. The most famous painting by Hofer is the canvas of the Madonna with some little shepherds on Spinale mountain, and also the portraits of Francesco Giuseppe and Sissi, several flower, natural and mythological symbols in liberty style. The Salone Hofer is a cultural and historic asset of high value, officially recognized by the Province of Trento in 2004. A big fire destroyed the building’s roof and wooden parts completely on December 31, 2008 (then rebuilt as the original ones), but it didn’t burn the paintings of Gottfried Hofer, including the canvas with the Madonna, which was saved by the firemen of Madonna di Campiglio and Trentino during the fire extinguishing. adonna di Campiglio is surrounded by the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, the widest protected area of Trentino (620,5 km2), which includes two different geological ad geo-morphological landscapes: the Adamello-Presanella mountains westward (with glaciers, rivers, waterfalls and lakes) and the Brenta Dolomites eastward (with peaks and great rock towers). Between these two worlds there are several side valleys - Vallesinella, Val Genova, Val Nambrone are the most famous – each one with its peculiar landscape. There are numerous species of animals: the brown bear, that was brought back in the protected area thanks to the project Life Ursus, chamois, deers, roe deers, eagles, steinbocks, foxes, badgers, martens, grouses, marmots, white partridge and many other big and small animals. The flora includes more than 1.200 species, the trees are 25 millions and the paths net on foot is more than 700 km. The symbol of Madonna di Campiglio T he brown bear, laying down on a stalk of the typical mountain flower called “ramponzolo”, is the symbol of Campiglio. The original drawing belongs to the paintings, realized by Gottfried Hofer, that decorate the Salone Hofer, the feast room of the Des Alpes hotel, inaugurated on August 18, 1897. Opening time: 8.30 am-7 pm, everyday Holy Masses: from Monday to Saturday at 6 pm; on Sunday at 11 am and 6 pm On Sissi trail The mountain guides monument 7 The Adamello-Presanella glaciers 4 O “ n the highest and lonely tops I can breath more freely, while the others would feel lost”. So the princess Sissi wrote in the end of the 1800s, commenting her deep bond with the mountains. Her presence and her walks in Campiglio are also proved by the “Sissi stone”, in the Empress square, which has the writing “A memoriaErinnerung 6-14 sett. 1889”. You can read this quotation just walking for 20 minutes along an easy path, starting on the back of the old Santa Maria church. T ear Righi square there is N the monument dedicated here are some peculiarities that make Adamello and Presanella very fascinating: the Presanella mountains have 7 glaciers, while in the Trentino part of the Adamello there are 17 glaciers, among which the Mandrone glacier, the widest of the Italian Alps. Besides, Cima Presanella peak (3558 m.a.s.l.) is the higher mountain of Trentino. On Adamello ridges, between 1914 and 1918, there was the highest battle front of the Great War. Here, at 3.000 m.a.s.l., in snow and ice, the Adamello Gret War took place and today there is a museum dedicated to it in Spiazzo Rendena (20 km from Madonna di Campiglio). In Adamello, Pope Giovanni Paolo II went twice: the first time in 1984, when he skied with the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini, and the second time in 1988. to the mountain guides: the figure of an mountain guide in bronze is climbing a Val Genova-granite peak. The monument was made by the friar Silvio Bottes, and it was inaugurated in 1974. Near the little lake there is a museum, open only in some periods of the year, dedicated to the historical mountain guides’ families and people that contributed to the development of Madonna di Campiglio. The exhibition itinerary shows memoirs, photos, diaries, ropes and ice axes, tools of the mountainguides deeds on the Dolomites peaks and other mountains. The legend of Sissi, the godmother C ould the princess Sissi, the most famous guest that Campiglio has ever had, not have a her own legend after her stays in this resort? Of course not! This story was published, even if it was not a verified fact, by the local newspapers during the second stay of the Sissi Empress in Campiglio (“Voce Cattolica”, 10th July 1894). It is said that one day Sissi came in a mountain hut during her walk around the village. Here she found a couple of poor peasants, that were taking care of a new-born baby; the peasants were dressed up, but they were sad because it was the day of their baby’s baptism and her godmother didn’t arrived. So Sissi proposed herself to take the woman’s place; when the two peasants (that did not recognize the Empress) asked the Princess what name she would like to give the baby, Sissi answered “my name is not common in this country, so give the baby the most beautiful name that Christendom knows, name her Maria!”. The day after, when a servant gave some money to the peasants and a gift to the baby, the peasants discovered that her baby’s godmother was the Austria’s Empress. by Paolo Bisti 7 The Brenta Dolomites, Unesco World Heritage O n June 26, 2009 at the Congress Palace of Siviglia, in Spain, the Brenta Dolomites have been declared Unesco World Heritage. Nine groups of the Dolomites, including the Brenta Dolomites too, entered in the 183 natural gems of the earth. The extraordinary natural beauty, the geological and geo-morphological peculiarity of the Dolomites make them unique compared to all the other mountains.
