KOINONIA OCTOBER/ O∫ΔøμƒπO™ 2015 Message from Fr. Michael L. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter Perseverance, Dedication, and Faith! I hope by now everyone in the Community is back to normal again. The summer months are over; the fall season has come to reality. Days will start to get shorter and nights longer. The New Ecclesiastical year has begun and we are looking forward to a wonderful and challenging New Year in the Church. Our Church Organizations are back, having their monthly meetings, and scheduling their future events and activities. On October 2012 (Koinonia Article) I wrote about what was happening in the Parish. We are now 3 years later and new events and challenges are facing us again. In our last issue of the September Koinonia, if you read the presidents report on what we have accomplished throughout this year, we have come long away. Many thanks to a few people who really understood the needs for our Community. Anyone who reads this message can understand what progress has come to our Parish. I don’t need to rewrite the script, but if you are a concerned parishioner and came to church you would automatically see the difference and the great progress that we made. The members of the parish Council along with myself, have worked very hard during the year to promote a better, healthier, spiritual environment for everyone in the Community. We have done major renovations in all our buildings. The Plateia, the Fellowship Hall (Market), the School building and the Church proper. I would like to single out a few benefactors of the church that made these renovations possible. Mr. & Mrs. Peter Angelos, Mr.& Mrs. Gus Diakoloukas, Mr. Aris Melissaratos, and in blessed memory Mr. Andy Koutsovasilis. With their generous donations we were able to accomplish the major tasks that were ahead of us, such as turning the Fellowship Center into our New Bilingual Educational Center, removing old roofs and putting on new ones. Installing all new air conditioning systems in the Church, and School buildings. Revamping the down stairs hall and stage. Waxing and buffing all the floors, painting and adding the new carpet in the Plateia. Painting the stairwells leading to the newly painted Gymnasium. Installing photocopy machines in the Church office and the Greek school office. Hopefully by the end of the month we can begin renovating all the bathrooms which have needed dire repairs and renovations. The list goes on and on. I would need an extra 2 pages just to list even the smaller things that were done during the year. We have come a long way since 2012, and we need to continue this course of action, and guarantee that we don’t go back to what we had to face in 2012. We all go through some rough times in our lives but I believe that these experiences that we faced in the past, made us stronger in our belief and in our faith. We have opened ourselves to greater challenges, but in order to succeed we need to have our young people, our married couples of the parish realize that they need to really step up to the plate and make some changes in the way they view their Community. We need people with managing skills and accounting experience. We need a bookkeeper to help with the finances of the church. We need people that have experience in computers and website knowledge. There are so many parishioners out there young and old, who continually express that they love their church, but have done nothing to help their church. Well now you can, all you have to do is say that I want to help my church grow spiritually and financially. There is a saying “DON’T JUST SAY THE WORDS OUT YOUR MOUTH, BRING OUT ACTION FROM YOUR WORDS.” In other words, don’t just say it, DO IT. It’s time that we realize that we can’t keep asking the same people to be responsible for everything in the Church. We need other people to step up in and help those who have done the work for years. The young people of the parish between ages 20-40, need to get their act straight and volunteer their services to the church. Most of our young people grew up in this parish. You went through JOY, Sunday School, Greek School, GOYA, Dance Groups, and so on. All of you must have good memories of growing up here at St. Nicholas. I continuously hear wonderful stories that the young people tell me about how they grew up in GreekTown. Many of you got married at St. Nicholas and you are now raising your children in the same tradition hopefully. But did you forget where you came from? Did you forget while you were raised in this Community, others took on the responsibility to see fit that St. Nicholas would stay around for the next generations? Well now it’s your turn to step up and help your church grow and prosper for the next 60 years. In every monthly CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA METROPOLIS OF NEW JERSEY 2 K O I N ø N I ∞ OCTOBER 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH PRESIDENT MHNYMA TOY ¶ƒO∂¢ƒOÀ Δ∏™ ∫Oπ¡OΔ∏Δ∞™ Dear Parishioners, This month, I would like to talk about Stewardship. Stewardship is more than giving money. The word stewardship comes from the Greek word oikenomous, which means someone who manages a household. The person does not own the household but manages it. The Stewards of ancient times, were trusted with everything from seeing that the floors were clean, to the finances and to the public face of the household. Joseph, the carpenter, is good example of a Steward. We are not the owners but have been trusted with valuable resources, such as our personal talents, skills, money, time, the gospel, creation of another human being and with the responsibility to care for everything, the planet, our family, friends, strangers, the church, all for the sake of God’s purposes in this world. Most often Stewardship is thought of fundraising to pay off the building and to cover the priest’s salary. Instead, we should see that we are trustees of talents, gifts, time, treasure, culture and the values we share in the society around us. We all live in the secular world, where our faith is constantly being put to the test. I challenge you to think about Stewardship in your daily life. For example, my profession is homebuilding. The major issues that I face in my daily work are delays due to weather, rising material costs, and issues with subcontractors. What difference does my faith make to how I address these issues? A big difference-I pray that the house that I am building will one day provide shelter for a family in our community. Maybe, I will know this family. But as a Steward, I want to hand over a quality built home, not a substandard home created by taking too many shortcuts. This week as the television blasted news of Hurricane Joaquin, I prayed that it would pass us by. But I relied on the talents that God gave me to prepare for the worse. I prayed for the patience to handle whatever the storm pummeled down on us. As I read the newspaper this morning, I wonder where were the Stewards during General Motors faulty ignition switch crisis and the Volkswagen emission scandal? In my work as Parish Council President, I pray every day for humility, patience and the grace of God to call others to serve. We have a great Parish Council team, but I pray daily for more parishioners to hear God’s call to serve and for them to have trust in God that they will be able to manage their responsibilities at home, at work and still give of their time, and talent to the church in whatever capacity they choose. So, I ask you- What do you do for a living? What are the major issues you face in your daily work or at home? What difference does your faith make to how you address those issues? How can we pray for your ministry in the workplace or at home? Please share how your faith makes a difference in your life to your co-workers, family, friends, and the strangers that we bump into at the gym, grocery store, or in parking lot. We are listening and are here to pray with you. Demetriades We have been saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and past president of Saint Nicholas, John A. Demetriades. John is remembered as the effective and energetic leader who took charge, not wavering, and made decisions to benefit Saint Nicholas and the Community at aarge. He cared about individuals and never pre-occupied to offer help and advice. Among his achievements as president, serving of total 15 years in two separate terms, he used innovative ideas, which enabled Saint Nicholas to purchase the Lot on Ponca Street - known as "the Plateia". Those of us who visited John in recent years while he resided in assisted living facilities witnessed his dynamic personality, leadership quality, and the love and respect given him by residents and staff alike. These qualities were a part of John's being since early childhood as written by his brother George in the Herald Newsletter of the AHEPA Lord Baltimore Chapter, when John was named AHEPAN of the month in March 1992. John was born on July 26, 1930 in Weirton, West Virginia and raised in NYC where the family moved shortly thereafter. As a youngster he was given the responsibility of household chores and caring for his two younger brothers, George and James while his parents worked during the Great Depression. He quickly became a respected leader among his peers as he organized various games in the neighborhood. John was named Valiant Victorian for his class when he graduated grade school. When the family moved to Baltimore in 1945, John worked with his father at the restaurant on Newkirk Street and Eastern Avenue. He organized the Greek boys in the neighborhood to play basketball with the Annunciation team and travel to the games out of state and had gotten his Father to sponsor the "Nick's Sandwich Shop" basketball team. In 1949 John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and traveled by motorcycle with a friend to Illinois to do so. Having served his tenure he returned to Baltimore and continued working with his father; he was active in GAPA, and was on the first Board of the newly established Saint Nicholas Parish. He worked with the youth of GOYA and was always available to listen and help those who approached him. In 1962 he married his beloved Fay Walker who became his chief supporter in life especially when John undertook Church projects. After the restaurant failed in 1961 he continued his college education and got a job with the Postal Service where in one year he was promoted to management P.R. to the Postmaster of Baltimore. He retired in 1976 giving up a promotion in Washington D.C. At this time he once again became very involved in Church affairs; participating in activities that promoted the welfare of our Community and our City. John became an active AHEPAN in 1970 and as such began Americanization classes on his own. By 1992 he had helped about forty-five Greek immigrants become U.S. citizens. John was known for being a man of his word, his word was his bond; and he never went back on any commitment. He was active in Church activities not only in the leadership position but always working behind the scene whenever help was needed. He not only chaired the annual Greek Festival but took an active part in all annual facts of the event for many years. John worked closely with Mayor Schaefer and civic leaders and the councilmen of our area and was appointed to the state scholarship committee. The Archdiocese appointed him to the Ecclesiastical committee for this area. The Saint Nicholas Community honored him with a spectacular "THANK YOU" party to celebrate, in a small way our appreciation for all of his good works. In 1991 John and Fay moved to New Port Richey, Florida, where they lived happily until Fay's passing. In recent years as John's health was failing he resided in Sunrise Florida, near his attentive daughter Brenda Collison and her son David. John's caring manner endeared him to those around him. His opinions and directions were sought, just as they had been throughout his life. Those at the facility appreciated his positive up beat outlook. We will miss not visiting with him each winter and know that his deep faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has him in the green pastures of Heaven with his beloved Fay. Pastrikos, Protopresbyter CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 newsletter, we always make sure to put out a “Wish List.” And in that wish list we always ask parishioners to donate or volunteer their services to the Church. We always need volunteers to be responsible and to be dedicated to their Church. It’s sad that with a parish like ours, and with 980 families, that we have to pay people to come to the church and clean or help out when help is needed. I understand that we have our noses so high that we can’t look down and see the needs of the parish. We need our young professionals to stop standing on the sidelines, get involved and make change happen in your Community. In our parish, we have Architects, Contractors, Engineers, Financial Planners, Project Managers, Accountants, CPAs and Consultants. Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, Technicians, Electricians, Plumbers and Handymen qualified to help the Community grow. WHERE ARE YOU? That’s what I keep asking? Where are those talented professionals to come and volunteer their services in the different capacities that we have. It’s sad that in today’s society people believe that all the problems of the world can be taken care of by other people. We don’t have to go any further, and I apologize if I offend anyone, but we have those people with the same beliefs in our parish. They say the same thing. We don’t have to worry; others will take care of the problems of the church. And mostly what you hear from those people, sorry I wish I could but I don’t have the time. Just imagine if everyone in the Community gave a little bit of time to God’s home, this world would be a better place to live in, raise our families with Christian morals and values. Remember God gave all His children the gift of many talents. To some he gave more to other less. Let’s use those talents together to help our Church and Community grow and prosper. Remember the word “WE”! We together as caring people can make a difference by being the example for others to follow. Let’s take that giant step in our lives and change the way we deal with life’s problems. Remember, “We can make a difference; all it takes is one simple effort.” Have a great month! Please be mindful of those worshipping: greetings and conversations should be carried on after the services, outside the sanctuary. Serving snacks to youngsters, gum chewing, crossing legs are not appropriate behaviors in our Church. Appropriate dress does not include micro-mini skirts. It need not be stated that texting, checking emails, and phone messages are not permitted when one is in the sanctuary. During Church services we are not to sing when the prayers or phrases are to be chanted by the priest because the "echo" effect is bothersome to the priest (and to the other worshippers). If unsure, reference should be made to the passage marked "priest" in the liturgy book; the role of parishioners is marked "people". As adults we should always remember that we are the role models of the children, especially those of us who are in positions of authority. What they observe becomes their learned behavior. Probably the most important duty that we each have as worshippers attending church services is to do all that is in our power to see that a proper decorum and atmosphere is maintained so that all of the congregation is able to pray sincerely, peacefully and meaningfully. It is with this fact in mind that we have set forth the following guidelines: Upon entering the Church, at all times, but especially during services an individual should remember that he or she is in the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required so as not to disturb those who are already engaged in prayer, but, even more importantly, as an expression of sincere faith and awareness of the presence of the Lord. No irrelevant conversations should take place, either in the Narthex or in any part of the Church. According to actual church service procedures, each and every member of the congregation is required to be seated in the pews at the beginning of the service. It is only by leniency that anyone is allowed to enter the Church once the services have begun. Thus it behooves us not to take undue advantage of this leniency. There are several parts of the service during which no one should be moving about. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently, until the proper time to proceed. These parts of the service are: 1. The Procession of the Priest and Altar Boys with the Gospel; 2. The reading of the Gospel; O∫ΔøμƒπO™ 2015 K O I N ø N I ∞ 9 COMMUNITY NEWS ✧ ∫Oπ¡OΔπ∫∞ ¡∂A 3. The Cherubic Hymn and the Great Procession of the Priest and Altar Boys with the Holy Gifts; 4. The recitation of the Nicene Creed (in which the entire congregation should participate); 5. The prayers of offering "Take, eat..." and the prayers of the consecration of the Holy Gifts; 6. The Sermon; 7. Any special services (memorial services, processions, prayers). One basic rule to follow is that, whenever the Priest is facing the people or outside of the altar, either with the censer or giving the blessing, everyone should stand wherever they are. Please remember that the Parish Council members and the ushering staff are required to keep order during services, and all should follow their instructions at all times. Thank you. Wishing you a blessed year of brotherhood. √¢∏°π∂™ °π∞ Δ∏¡ øƒ∞¡ Δ∏™ §∞Δƒ∂π∞™ ∏ ·Ú¯‹ ÙÔ˘ Ó¤Ô˘ ÂÎÎÏËÛÈ·ÛÙÈÎÔ‡ ¤ÙÔ˘˜ Ì·˜ ı˘Ì›˙ÂÈ ÙËÓ ÂÎÎÏËÛÈ·ÛÙÈ΋ ÂıÈÌÔÙ˘›·. ¶·Ú·Î·Ïԇ̠fiÏÔ˘˜ ÂΛÓÔ˘˜ Ô˘ ÂÎÎÏËÛÈ¿˙ÔÓÙ·È Ó· Ï¿‚Ô˘Ó ˘fi„Ë ÙÔ˘˜ fiÙÈ: ÔÈ ¯·ÈÚÂÙÔ‡Ú˜ Î·È ÔÈ Û˘ÓÔÌÈϛ˜ ı· Ú¤ÂÈ Ó· ‰ÈÂÍ¿ÁÔÓÙ·È ÌÂÙ¿ ·fi ÙËÓ £Â›· §ÂÈÙÔ˘ÚÁ›·, ÂÎÙfi˜ ÙÔ˘ ÂÎÎÏËÛÈ·ÛÙÈÎÔ‡ ¯ÒÚÔ˘. ¢ÂÓ Ú¤ÂÈ Ó· ‰›ÓÔ˘Ì ÛÓ·Î ÛÙ· ·È‰È¿, Ô‡Ù ӷ Ì·Û¿Ì ÙÛ›¯Ï˜, ‹ Ó· ÛÙ·˘ÚÒÓÔ˘Ì ٷ fi‰È·, ‰ÂÓ Â›Ó·È Î·Ù¿ÏÏËϘ Û˘ÌÂÚÈÊÔÚ¤˜ ηٿ ÙËÓ ÒÚ· Ô˘ ‰È·ÚΛ Ë £Â›· §ÂÈÙÔ˘ÚÁ›·.
