Hello everyone!!!
My name is Giulia Paratore and it is my pleasure to announce that I will have the honour of
being your Secretary General for this IMUN Middle School edition. This is my first edition working
with Middle School, though my participation in MUN simulations goes back to more than five years
ago, to 2011 when I was just a 19 year-old delegate and my English was not as fluent as it is today.
My performance as a delegate in NHSMUN 2011was not exactly the best job I could do. I was
in a brand new environment, speaking in a foreign language with 3000 super competitive students
coming from all over the world, in the city that never sleeps and I was literally freaking out thinking I
was supposed to speak in front of 150 people in my committee waiting for the right words to come
out of my mouth. Well, now I can say that, maybe due to anxiety, maybe due to my fear of talking
about diplomatic issues in english, I do not think I did a great job. Yet I would do it others 100 times
(this time more aware and less scared).
At the time United Network was very small and did not count more than 12 staff members. I
was among these 12 guys. Since then I have never left the staff and I hope I will be able to go on for a
long time, although it is not always as easy as it might seem. Behind each simulation, there are dozens
and dozens of people working for months to make everything as perfect as possible. Presentations,
lessons on the Model and the part that we all "love": gathering the badges, placards and lists of students
inside the bags. Yet every year these MUNs enclose something magic in them. We started with a dozen
people, and now we ended up with more than 150 staff members. I’m sure there is a reason standing
behind it and I think this is thanks to the MUNs that are able to make us ever more united. Seeing high
school and now middle school students gathered in a hall in front of you with the eyes quivering for
the start of the simulation is something that one hundred percent makes all the efforts worth. For this
reason, as always, I'm looking forward to this experience, which is new for me as well, to begin!
See you in a few days in the Delegates' committees!
