Though the singers may wear different clothes, cook very different food, speak different languages, when they sing the story of Rama, they echo one another. Translated into English, the songs sound startlingly similar. I have used womens work songs and ritual songs from Marathi, Telugu, Maithili and Bengali.... m While weeding, sowing, husking or grinding, or preparing for a wedding, women all across the subcontinent sing these songs. These are connected with different moments of a womans life, and here Sita is the name of one who grows up in neglect, attains puberty, gets married, gets pregnant, is abandoned and gives birth. They call it the Ramayana but it is of Sita that they sing. er ia ls . co In womens retellings, the Rama myth is blasted automatically though probably unwittingly. Here Rama comes through as a harsh, uncaring and weak-willed husband, far cry from the maryada purushottama, but sita is no rebel ; she is still the yielding suffering wife, though she speaks to her friends of her sufferings, of injustice, of loneliness and sorrow. Even Chandrabati, who Chastises Rama under her own name let Sita remain the timid Hindu heroine. ps Oral tradition by women reflect topics of interest only to women since : the songs tell stories of Rama (b) the songs narrate the abadonment and injustice towards women (c) the songs do not relate details of war (d) w w .u (a) w 71. cs tu dy m at The topics that interest men do not interest women. They leave out the details of war, Ramas glory, the details of brahminical rituals, etc. and sing of abandonment and injustice, and of weddings, pregnancy and childbirth. Naturally, the songs centre around Sita, rather than Rama. The Ramayana sung by the mainstream bards has little in common with the womens songs. Women sing privately for themselves, male bards sing for the public. Their approaches to the epic and to the act of singing are totally different. The professional bard sings of Rama. The village woman sings of Sita. the songs could be sung by women while working Codes : (1) (a), (b) and (c) only (2) (b), (c) and (d) only (3) (b) and (d) only (4) (a), (c) and (d) only J-7415 !J-7415-PAPER-III! www.upscstudymaterials.com 36 Paper-III www.upscstudymaterials.com www.upscstudymaterials.com www.upscstudymaterials.com ps cs tu dy m at er ia ls . co m çÙÙçÜç¹Ì »læ´àæ ·¤æð Âçɸ° ¥æñÚU ÂýàÙ â´Øæ 71 âð 75 ·ð¤ ©æÚU ÎèçÁ° Ñ ÖæÚUÌ ×ð´ ×çãÜæ¥æð´ ·¤è ׿ñç¹·¤ ÂÚUÂÚUæ¥æð´ ×𴠥栿æãð ·¤ãè´ Öè ãæð´ ¥æ âÕ Îéç¹ØæÚUè ÕãÙð ãñ´Ð Ølç »æçØ·¤æ°¡ ¥Ü»-¥Ü» ·¤ÂǸð ÂãÙÌè ãæð´, ¥Ü»-¥Ü» Âý·¤æÚU ·¤æ ¹æÙæ ÕÙæÌè ãæð´, ¥Ü»-¥Ü» Öæáæ°¡ ÕæðÜÌè ãæð´, ÂÚU ÁÕ ßð ÚUæ× ·¤è »æÍæ »æÌè ãñ´ Ìæð ßð âÕ °·¤ Áñâè ÕæÌð´ ãè ·¤ãÌè ãñ´Ð ¥´»ðýÁè ×ð´ ¥ÙéßæÎ ç·¤° ÁæÙð ÂÚU Øð »èÌ ¥æà¿ØüÁÙ·¤ M¤Â âð °·¤ â×æÙ ÂýÌèÌ ãæðÌð ãñ´Ð ×ñ´Ùð ×çãÜæ¥æð´ mæÚUæ ·¤æ× ·¤ÚUÙð ·ð¤ âר ¥æñÚU âæ×æçÁ·¤ ¥ÙécÆUæÙæð´ ·ð¤ âר »æ° ÁæÙð ßæÜð ×ÚUæÆUè, ÌðÜé»é, ×ñçÍÜè ¥æñÚU Õ´»æÜè »èÌæð´ ·¤æ ©ÂØæð» ç·¤Øæ ãñ ...Ð çÙÚUæ§ü-»éǸæ§ü, ÕèÁæ§ü, ·é¤ÅUæ§ü ¥æñÚU çÂÜæ§ü ·¤ÚUÌð âר Øæ àææÎè ·¤è ÌñØæÚUè ·¤ÚUÌð ãé° §â ©Â×ãæmè ×ð´ âÕ Á»ã ×çãÜæ¥æð´ mæÚUæ Øð »èÌ »æ° ÁæÌð ãñ´Ð Øð »èÌ °·¤ ×çãÜæ ·ð¤ ÁèßÙ ·ð¤ çßçÖÙ ÿæææð´ âð ÁéǸð ãæðÌð ãñ´ ¥æñÚU §Ù×ð´ âèÌæ ©â ¥æñÚUÌ ·¤æ Ùæ× ãñ Áæð ©Âðÿææ ×ð´ ÂÜè-Õɸè ãæðÌè ãñ, çȤÚU ÁßæÙ ãæðÌè ãñ, çȤÚU ©â·¤æ çßßæã ·¤ÚU çÎØæ ÁæÌæ ãñ, çȤÚU ßã »ÖüßÌè ãæð ÁæÌè ãñ, ©â·ð¤ ÕæÎ ©âð ©â·ð¤ ÂçÌ mæÚUæ ÀUæðǸ çÎØæ ÁæÌæ ãñ ¥æñÚU çȤÚU ßã Õ¿ð ·¤æð Á× ÎðÌè ãñÐ ßð ©âð ÚUæ×æØæ ·¤æ Ùæ× ÎðÌè ãñ´ ÂÚUÌé Øã ©â âèÌæ ·¤è ·¤ãæÙè ãñ çÁâ·ð¤ ÕæÚðU ×ð´ ßð »æÌè ãñ´Ð ×çãÜæ°¡ ÁÕ §â ·¤Íæ ·¤æð ¥ÂÙð àæÎæð´ ×ð´ ·¤ãÌè ãñ´ Ìæð ÚUæ× ·¤æ ç×Í·¤ â´ÖßÌÑ ¥ÙÁæÙð ×ð´ ãè SßÌÑ ãè ÅêUÅU ÁæÌæ ãñÐ Øãæ¡ ÚUæ× °·¤ ·¤ÆUæðÚU, ÕðÂÚUßæã ¥æñÚU ·¤×ÁæðÚU §ÀUæàæçÌ ßæÜð ÂçÌ ·ð¤ L¤Â ×ð´ ©ÖÚU·¤ÚU ¥æÌæ ãñ Áæð ©â·¤è רæüÎæ ÂéL¤áæðæ× ßæÜè ÀUçß âð çÕË·é¤Ü ¥Ü» ãñ ÁÕç·¤ âèÌæ çßÎýæðãè Ùãè´ ãñ, ßã ¥Õ Öè ¥æææ·¤æÚUè, ÂèǸæ Öæð»Ùð ßæÜè ÂÙè ·ð¤ M¤Â ×ð´ ãñ ØlÂè ßã ¥ÂÙè ÂèǸæ¥æð´, ¥ØæØ, ¥·ð¤ÜðÂÙ ¥æñÚU Îéѹæð´ ·ð¤ ÕæÚðU ×ð´ ¥ÂÙè âãðçÜØæð´ ·ð¤ âæÍ ÕæÌ ·¤ÚUÌè ãñÐ Øãæ¡ Ì·¤ ç·¤ ¿ÎýßÌè Öè çÁâÙð ÚUæ× ·¤è ÖâüÙæ ·¤è ãñ, âèÌæ ·¤æð °·¤ ÖèM¤ çãÎé ÙæçØ·¤æ ÕÙè ÚUãÙð ÎðÌè ãñÐ ÂéL¤áæð´ ·¤è L¤ç¿ ·ð¤ çßáØæð´ ×ð´ ×çãÜæ¥æð´ ·¤è ·¤æð§ü L¤ç¿ Ùãè´ ãñÐ ßð Øéh-ßæüÙ, ÚUæ× ·ð¤ »æñÚUß, ÕýærææßæÎè çßçÏçßÏæÙæð´ ¥æçÎ ·ð¤ ÕæÚðU ×ð´ ·¤æð§ü ÕæÌ Ùãè´ ·¤ÚUÌè ãñ´ ÕçË·¤ ÂçÚUØæ» ¥æñÚU ¥ØæØ ÌÍæ àææçÎØæð´, »ÖæüßSÍæ ¥æñÚU Õæð ·ð¤ Á× ·ð¤ »èÌ »æÌè ãñ´Ð SßæÖæçß·¤ M¤Â âð Øð »èÌ ÚUæ× ·¤è ÕÁæØ âèÌæ ·ð¤ ¿æÚUæð´ ¥æðÚU ·ð¤çÎýÌ ãñ´Ð ×éØÏæÚUæ ·ð¤ ¿æÚUææð´ mæÚUæ »æ§ü ÁæÙð ßæÜè ÚUæ×æØæ ¥æñÚU ×çãÜæ¥æð´ mæÚUæ »æ° ÁæÙð ßæÜð »èÌæð´ ×ð´ ÕãéÌ ·¤× â׿ÙÌæ Îð¹Ùð ·¤æð ç×ÜÌè ãñÐ ×çãÜæ°¡ ¥ÂÙð ¥æ ·ð¤ çܰ çÙÁè ÌæñÚU ÂÚU »æÌè ãñ´ ÁÕç·¤ ÂéL¤á ¿æÚUæ ¥æ× ÁÙÌæ ·ð¤ çܰ »æÌð ãñ´Ð §â ×ãæ·¤æÃØ ¥æñÚU §Ù »èÌæ𴠷𤠻æØÙ ·ð¤ ÂýçÌ ©Ù·ð¤ ÎëçcÅU·¤æðæ çÕË·é¤Ü ãè ¥Ü»-¥Ü» ãñ´Ð ÂðàæðßÚU ¿æÚUæ ÚUæ× ·¤è »æÍæ »æÌð ãñ´ ÁÕç·¤ »ýæ×èæ ×çãÜæ°¡ âèÌæ ·¤è »æÍæ »æÌè ãñ´Ð w .u ×çãÜæ¥æð´ ·¤è ׿ñç¹·¤ ÂÚUÂÚUæ ×ð´ ·ð¤ßÜ ×çãÜæ¥æð´ ·¤è L¤ç¿ ·ð¤ çßáØ ÂçÚUÜçÿæÌ ãæðÌð ãñ´ Øæð´ç·¤ (a) »èÌæð´ ×ð´ ÚUæ× ·¤è ·¤ãæçÙØæ¡ ÕÌæ§ü ÁæÌè ãñ´Ð (b) »èÌæð´ ×ð´ ×çãÜæ¥æð´ ·¤æð ©Ù·ð¤ ÂçÌØæð´ mæÚUæ ÀUæðǸ çΰ ÁæÙð ¥æñÚU ©Ù·ð¤ âæÍ ãæðÙð ßæÜð ¥ØæØ ·ð¤ ÕæÚðU ×ð´ ÕÌæØæ ÁæÌæ ãñÐ (c) »èÌæð´ ×ð´ Øéh ·¤æ ßæüÙ Ùãè´ ãæðÌæ ãñÐ (d) Øð »èÌ ×çãÜæ¥æð´ mæÚUæ ·¤æ× ·¤ÚUÙð ·ð¤ âר Öè »æ° Áæ â·¤Ìð ãñ´Ð ·ê¤ÅU Ñ (1) ·ð¤ßÜ (a), (b) ¥æñÚU (c) (2) ·ð¤ßÜ (b), (c) ¥æñÚU (d) (3) ·ð¤ßÜ (b) ¥æñÚU (d) (4) ·ð¤ßÜ (a), (c) ¥æñÚU (d) w w 71.
