Foreword
Dear Participants,
I'm honoured to host you in Naples for the 1st Enlightening Tourism Conference “Competition
and Innovation in Tourism: New Challenges in an Uncertain Environment”. The Conference has been
organised by both the Institute for Service Industry Research (IRAT) of Consiglio Nazionale delle
Ricerche (CNR) and GEnerating scientific knowledge. Innovating for tourism organizations. DEveloping
the ToURism industry (GEIDETUR) of University of Huelva (Spain) - in close collaboration with the
Parthenope University of Naples and School of Sport and Service Management of University of
Brighton.
With all the above bodies, CNR - IRAT boasts about a long experience of partnership, that has
been increasingly strengthened across the last decades through the joined participation in a large
number of research projects as well as training and educational programmes.
The high dynamism of the competitive context and the complexity of this sector have actually
imposed on tourist firms and destinations the adoption of a proactive attitude, focused on a systematic
recourse to innovation, as basis of a culture capable of providing a new interpretation of tourist
dynamics. Therefore, greater attention is needed towards innovative processes' dynamics in their
iterative meaning, where technological, organisational and managerial changes intertwine and nourish
each other by means of a cause and effect relationship, thus contributing to improvements in
competitiveness.
Starting from this assumption, the main aim of the Conference is to discuss, exchange and
share ideas and knowledge on innovation in Tourism. I hope this Conference will help us to understand
more in depth the dynamics and phenomena characterising this changing and complex political,
economic and social environment.
Specific aims are:
To provide a platform for debate and dissemination of research findings, new
research areas and techniques, conceptual developments, and papers with
practical applications;
To scope out innovative thinking in traditional topics such as different types of
tourism and tourists, their needs and expectations;
To promote collaborative interactions between senior and junior researchers;
To provide a platform for full paper presentations, that further mutual
understanding of the research lines being developed by participants;
To provide examples of best/good practices and technological innovation.
This Conference is dedicated to Clara Stefania Petrillo, an Italian researcher working
on Tourism at Research Institute for Service Industry, recently passed away after a lengthy
battle with cancer, to keep alive the memory of her passionate energy, which still supports
our work and life.
I wish to express my deep gratitude to Alfonso Morvillo, Director of CNR - IRAT, for his
invaluable efforts to set up and manage the Conference Organisation through the concrete contribution
of his Institute in terms of both financial and human resources. In this regard, a special thank has to be
given to Valeria Catanese who, as Conference Secretariat, has efficiently managed all the activities
related to the organisation, including the relationships between the Organising Committee and the
Conference Participants. On behalf of the CNR - IRAT, the GEIDETUR of University of Huelva, the
University of Naples, Parthenope, the University of Brighton and the local organising committee, I wish
you to enjoy the Conference and our beautiful city.
