The mewing of the two cats saved the tenants of the building that had caught fire. The only victims of the fire were the two cats.
lmost 60 thousand cats
used to live in Venice in
the 30s. Today, that figure corresponds to the number of
its inhabitants and the felines,
victims of the mass tourism that
has invaded the city thus disturbing their existence, have disappeared. The strays, scattered in
the various sestieres (districts),
used to mostly lie together in the
sunny spots of the campos (squares) or of the fondamentas (streets), peaceful and drowsy yet
always ready to rush when somebody brought them food. The
most fortunate of them had
found home by some families
and apparently each house had a
cat to proudly boast of. Others
had been adopted by grocery
shops and delis of the time where
they used to chase mice.
However their excessive number
concerned the local authorities
which decided to kill them for
hygiene reasons. The poor animals were captured during the
night by the “copacani”, people
who usually had the task of
taking away dogs that didn’t
have a collar or that had rabies.
The cats were placed in large
sacks and then in rubbish boats
that were fitted with specific containers with covers to muffle
their miaowing. And there they
were, headed towards a massacre. Although the order had been
passed on secretly, some old animalist ladies had noticed the
implacable decimation and
heard the stories of how the cats
were cruelly caught and taken
away. Many people feared for the

l’eccessivo numero preoccupò
le autorità comunali tanto che
fu decisa la loro soppressione,
per ragioni d’igiene. I copacani
(incaricati usualmente di prendere i cani senza collare o
malati di rabbia) andarono, di
notte, a catturare le povere
bestie. Sistemati dentro dei
sacchi e poi dentro i barconi
delle spazzature dotati d'appositi contenitori con coperchio
che ne attutiva i furiosi miagolii, i gatti furono avviati al massacro. Anche se l’ordinanza
d’eliminazione pare fosse stata
data in segreto, alcune vecchiette “animaliste” notarono
l’implacabile decimazione. Si
misero in sospetto, ascoltarono
incredule le storie d’inseguimenti, di crudeli retate, le
descrizioni di sacchi da cui
provenivano disperati lamenti.
Molti temettero per la vita del
proprio gatto domestico che,
durante la stagione degli
amori, scorrazzava irrefrenabile in giro. Montò la protesta

office published an article on the
newspapers to specify that only
the cats without an owner were
withdrawn. To avert their elimination, the owners of the felines
had to make sure their cats
remained at home. The following day each cat, even the
most troublesome of all wore a
coloured ribbon on the neck as a
symbol of ownership. Ever since,
the mayor never hounded the
poor animals again. There is an
ancient bond linking Venice and
cats. At the times of the voyages
to the East, the captains of the
ships of the Serenissima Republic
used to take aboard cats to kill
the mice infesting bilges and
even entrusted a member of the
crew with the task of taking care
of the felines that were considered true mascots. It has become a
historic curiosity the fact that
Doge Francesco Morosini brought his cat with him during the
battle for the reconquest of
Morea (the mummified cat can
be seen at the Natural History
Museum), and so has Nini, the
sewer rat hunter of the Frari
area, gained popularity at the
end of 19th century. The white
cat deigned to meet people at
Caffè Toppo on the fondamenta
in front of the homonymous
church, after having received a
stroke, even by the most famous
people of the time. Indeed, several figures from the world of politics, religion and art coming on
visit to Venice, after having been
at the Chiesa dei Frari, asked to
meet the animal. The owner,
Antonio Panciera, created a
book – the Golden Book – with
the signatures of all visitors.
Some of them particularly stand
out, like the ones of the tsar of
Russia Alexander III – who
wanted to see it as soon as he got
out of the State Archive (he died
on the same day as Nini) –, of the
Pope-to-be Giuseppe Sarto –
who had recently been elected as

gatti e Venezia è antichissimo
se, fin dai tempi dei viaggi
verso l’Oriente, i capitani delle
navi della Serenissima imbarcavano gruppi di felini per eliminare i sorci infestanti le sentine, nominando un membro
dell’equipaggio come incaricato di curare le bestie, considerate dei viventi portafortuna.
Se è rimasto impresso nelle
curiosità storiche il doge
Francesco Morosini che, durante la riconquista della
Morea, portò in battaglia la
gatta alla quale era affezionatissimo (imbalsamata si trova
al Museo di Storia Naturale),
negli ultimi anni dell’Ottocento si diffuse la fama di Nini,
il cacciatore di pantegane ai
Frari. Di pelo bianco, si degnava ricevere, con le carezze
degli avventori al Caffè Toppo
sulla fondamenta di fronte alla
bellissima Chiesa, anche quelle
dei Vip dell’epoca. Svariate
personalità politiche, religiose,
artistiche, arrivate a Venezia in
visita, dopo essersi recate alla
Chiesa dei Frari, chiedevano
d’incontrare l’animale. Il proprietario, Antonio Panciera,
istituì il Libro d’Oro, un registro con le firme dei visitatori.

Russia Alessandro III che uscito dall’Archivio di Stato volle
vederlo (morì lo stesso anno di
Nini!), del futuro Papa Giuseppe Sarto, da poco diventato
Patriarca di Venezia, di Me-

from the outside on the left hand side of the entrance, painted as it is sitting on the counter with the Book of Honour and a cup of coffee on its side.

collection of signatures has disappeared. It was apparently sold in
the 50s. The painter Gianluciano Soriani (nomen omen)
decorated the walls of Caffè
Toppo with large paintings in
1932 including the portrait of
Nini, which can be seen from the
outside on the left hand side of
the entrance, painted as it is sitting on the counter with the
Book of Honour and a cup of coffee on its side. Nini died very old
in February 1894 and its body
was thrown in a canal, as it was
usage at the time for kittens that
nobody wanted to adopt. «He
joined the Navy! », it was said
when the “work” had been done.
The owner of the Caffè and his
daughters felt so sorry for the cat
that one month later their customers organized a ceremony. A
medallion in the memory of Nini
was created, with a bas-relief
image of it and with the gold

la spoglia di Nini fu gettata nel
rio come s’usava con i micetti
appena nati che nessuno intendeva adottare. «È andato in
Marina!» si diceva ad operazione conclusa. Visto il rimpianto del gestore, delle sue
figlie, i clienti un mese dopo,
per ricordarlo, costituirono un
comitato che allestì la cerimonia di “suffragio”. In memoria
fu creato un medaglione con il
suo ritratto in bassorilievo e la
scritta in oro “A Nini di
engraving “To Antonio’s Nini The century of monuments.
1984”. During the commemoration the participants, as the
medallion was unveiled in the
presence of the authorities,
improvised a couple of speeches,
recited some poems and read out
a funeral oration while the
crowd hissed from outside the
caffè. They contested the “funeral rite” by screaming «Let the
cat go». The historian Giuseppe
Tassini wrote a sonnet that went:
«The cat of the Caffè dei Frari
died/ A nice, beautiful and
artless cat/ Whom by catching
rats in abundance/ had already
reached the first place among its
peers! » The aim of the organizers was not only that commemorating the cat. They raised
money among the participants
and reached the amount of 140
liras that were then evenly given
to five families in need of the
parish. Nini, although dead, had
done his good deed!

Frari/ Gatto bel, gatto buon,
senza malizia/ Che nell’accalappiar sorci a dovizia / Già
tenne il primo posto fra i suoi
pari!» Ma non solo ricordare il
gatto, vollero gli organizzatori.
Aperta una colletta fra i presenti, raggranellarono la
somma di 140 lire che venne
distribuita a 5 famiglie bisognose della parrocchia. Nini,
anche da defunto, aveva fatto
un’opera buona!

With this first exhibition of a “sequence” dedicated to the distinctive marks and the strengths of the modern
art collection by François Pinault, a new exhibition series dedicated to contemporary art will be inaugurated by Palazzo Grassi. The first appointment, organized by Alison M. Gingeras, will put on show the works by
sixteen artists – painters and sculptors – presenting works in which the principle of handicraft in contemporary art is stressed, through all the traditional creative genres. The presence of the ‘hand’ of the artist is highlighted through the display of works by an heterogeneous variety of artists that still base their work on various
expressions of ‘craft art’ thus widening the traditional sphere of painting and sculpture with new original interpretations and inventions. The painters involved bring to the fore numerous different approaches, from the
“traditional” oil and/or acrylic on canvas to experimental revisions of the “pictorial”. If on the one side, the
“traditional” group proposes works by Martial Raysse, Laura Owens, Marlene Dumas, Takashi Murakami,
and Richard Prince, the experimental one sees artists like Rudolf Stingel exploring “the idea” of painting
through a synthesis of environmental installation, process art and conventional “paintings”.
Enzo Cucchi at
the Correr Museum
ith a pictorial language that is linked on the one side to
his dreams and hopes and on the other to anonymity and
impersonality, Enzo Cucchi is – since the 70s – one of the
most outstanding figures of Italian contemporary art. He was born
in Morro D’Alba (Ancona) in 1949. He initially worked as a poet,
although he had already achieved excellent results as self-taught painter. It is by working with a small publishing company of the Marche
region that he comes into contact with Achille Bonito Oliva. He
moves to Rome in the mid-70s where he meets artists like Mimmo
Paladino, Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente with whom he establishes an intense intellectual bond and definitely shifts to visual art. It
was Bonito Oliva himself who saw in this group the potential of a
new outstanding generation of artists and invented for them the
term Transavanguardia, indicating their antithetical stance with
regard to the Avantgarde movement of the 60s. In this movement –
that was officially founded at the Venice Biennale in 1980 – each artist had its own working method. There were no rules and expressive
forms to follow, nor clear parallelisms. Yet there are certain unifying
elements, such as the sources of inspiration linked to a potential reality and the free use of past and present with all types of references,
without limits or requests for the achievement of something new. In
Cucchi’s paintings images, placed in a large canvas, seem to be free
from any psychological constraint, decorated with nothing more
than the necessary colours, clashing, absurd, melancholic, yet never
symbolic nor verbal, as Brunella Antomarini affirms. What is also
true, as Bonito Oliva again suggests, is that “the artist disarms himself, thus impeding that the right hand knows what the left hand is
doing”. The result, as it can be seen at the exhibition at the Correr
Museum on show until October 7, is an extraordinary combination
of canvases, whose surface shines with a concrete and perhaps
metaphysical light. The exhibition will feature masterpieces like:
“Le case vanno indietro” (1980), “Albero santo” (1979-80),
“Grande disegno della terra” (1983), “Paese ardente” (1998-99),
“Coraggio” (1998-99) e “L’alba dei piedi (da Disegni presi all’aria,
1999)”, forms and very personal entities in which colour is portrayed as an idea more than as a pictorial perception.

Con questa prima esposizione di una sequenza dedicata ai segni distintivi e ai punti di forza della collezione di arte contemporanea di François Pinault, è stata inaugurata a Palazzo Grassi una nuova serie espositiva dedicata all’arte contemporanea. Il primo appuntamento, a cura di Alison M. Gingeras, presenta le opere di sedici artisti – pittori e scultori - proponendo lavori in cui si evidenzia il principio di artigianalità nell’arte contemporanea, attraverso tutti i tradizionali generi creativi. Viene messa in luce la presenza della ‘mano’ dell’artista presentando una gamma eterogenea di artisti che si basano
su varie espressioni di ‘craft art’ ampliando il campo tradizionale della pittura e della scultura con nuove interpretazioni originali e invenzioni. I pittori inclusi evidenziano molteplici approcci diversi, dal “tradizionale” olio e/o acrilico su tela a revisioni sperimentali del “pittorico”. Lo schieramento “tradizionale”, propone opere di Martial Raysse, Laura Owens, Marlene
Dumas, Takashi Murakami, e Richard Prince, quello sperimentale propone artisti, come Rudolf Stingel, che esplorano “l’idea” della pittura attraverso una sintesi di installazione ambientale, process art, e “dipinti”convenzionali.

on un linguaggio pittorico, che muove da un lato verso i propri sogni e speranze e dall’altro verso l’anonimato e l’impersonale, Enzo Cucchi rappresenta – dagli anni ’70 – un punto
fisso dell’arte contemporanea italiana. Nato a Morro D’Alba
(Ancona) nel ’49 , è dapprima poeta anche se aveva all’attivo un
esordio in qualità di pittore autodidatta, e gli capita proprio collaborando proprio con una piccola casa editrice marchigiana, di entrare in contatto con Achille Bonito Oliva. Si trasferisce a Roma a metà
degli anni ’70, dove incontra artisti come Mimmo Paladino, Sandro
Chia, Francesco Clemente, con i quali stabilisce un intenso legame
intellettuale, dedicandosi quindi definitivamente all’arte visiva. Ed è
proprio Bonito Oliva che, intuendo in questo gruppo l’afflato di una
nuova importante generazione di artisti, conia per loro il termine
Transavanguardia, che sta a indicare come si pongano oltre e in antitesi al movimento dell’Avanguardia sorto negli anni ’60. In questo
movimento – nato ufficialmente alla Biennale di Venezia nel 1980 ogni artista ha un proprio metodo di lavoro. Non esistono regole e
forme espressive da seguire, né apparenti legami. In realtà non mancano elementi unificanti, come i motivi d’ispirazione tratti da una
realtà possibile e l’uso libero di passato e presente senza preclusioni ma con riferimenti aperti a tutte le direzioni, senza costrizioni od
obblighi di inventare qualcosa di nuovo. Nella pittura di Cucchi le
immagini, poste all’interno di una grande tela, sembrano liberate da
psicologie e idee, ridotte ai colori necessari, stridenti, assurde, malinconiche, ma mai simboliche o letterali, come afferma Brunella
Antomarini. Ma è vero anche, come suggerisce ancora Bonito Oliva,
che “l’artista si disarma da solo, impedendo che la mano destra sappia cosa fa la sinistra”. Il risultato è, come si evince dalla mostra visitabile fino al 7 ottobre al Museo Correr di Venezia, uno straordinario insieme di tele dove la superficie brilla di una luce concreta e probabilmente metafisica. Sono esposti veri e propri capolavori: da “Le
case vanno indietro” (1980), ad “Albero santo” (1979-80), dal
“Grande disegno della terra” (1983), a “Paese ardente” (1998-99),
“Coraggio” (1998-99) e “L’alba dei piedi (da Disegni presi all’aria,
1999)”, forme ed esseri personalissimi nei quali il colore viene rappresentato più come idea che come sensazione pittorica.

he human experience is permeated by the endeavour, through any means and form, of explaining and investigated time,
which influences our life. There is a cosmic, immense time in
which man appears from the last fragments before the stroke of an
hypothetic midnight arriving 24 hours (in reality 14 billion years)
after the Big-Bang. And there is the time of human History – conceived as the memory that determines our identity (thus dating back to
some thousand years ago) – that represents but a small part of the
time of our planet. These are examples of unidirectional time (i.e.
from the past till today), but there is also a time of memories, that is
more important than the flowing of hours and minutes, or a time of
sleep…that is potentially different for each of us. The notion of time
has been repeatedly discussed also in relation with art and one may
say that the time that has overseen the creation of works of art is very
much different, depending on whether they belong to modernity or
to other periods and cultures. Just like the time of emotions does not
correspond to the time of a watch. The exhibition – as recalls his creator Axel Vervoordt, the Belgian collector who has lent the vast majority of the works on view – investigates these very aspects and places
emphasis on timelessness, i.e. on the absence of “time”, the perception of vacuum and deep vacuum as source of everything, in one
word: on the work of art that belongs to all times.

’esperienza umana è permeata dal tentativo, attraverso ogni mezzo
e forma, di spiegare e di relazionarsi con il tempo ed il tempo stesso condiziona la nostra vita. Esiste un tempo cosmico, immenso,
in cui l’uomo appare solo a partire dagli ultimi frammenti prima dello
scoccare di un’ipotetica mezzanotte che giunge 24 ore (in realtà 14
miliardi di anni) dopo il Big-Bang; e c’è il tempo della Storia umana –
intesa come la memoria che determina la percezione della nostra identità (che risale quindi solo fino a qualche millennio di anni fa) – che non
rappresenta se non una piccola parte di quello del nostro pianeta. Sono
questi esempi di tempo unidirezionale (ovvero dal passato ad oggi), ma
esiste anche un tempo dei ricordi, più importante dello scorrere di ore e
minuti o un tempo del sonno, potenzialmente di diversa durata, per
ognuno. La nozione di tempo è stata discussa molte volte anche in rapporto all’arte e si può dire che il tempo che ha presidiato alla creazione
di opere d’arte è molto diverso a seconda che esse appartengano alla
modernità o ad altri periodi o culture, così come il tempo delle emozioni non corrisponde a quello dell’orologio. La mostra - come ricorda il suo
ideatore Axel Vervoordt, il collezionista belga prestatore della maggior
parte dei capolavori esposti - indaga proprio questi aspetti e si concentra
sull’a-temporalità (non-temporalità), ovvero sull’assenza di “tempo”, la
sensazione di vuoto e il vuoto inteso come fonte di tutte le cose, in una
parola: sull’opera d’arte che appartiene a tutti i tempi.

The symbolic seat of Venetian power,

The museum contains relics from
various regional navies and from the
Italian navy. The 2nd floor has a room

Fertility and maternity have
been since ever of capital
importance. Especially in Africa
where infant mortality was and still is in high percentage.

Italo Zannier professionally dedicated himself to photography from
1952 to 1976. He worked in particular in the sectors of architecture
and industry and produced numerous photobooks of Italian landscapes between 1967 and 1976, year in which he stopped taking
photographs and dedicated himself almost entirely to the history of
photography and to teaching. He began working again as photographer in 2006 with the same commitment he had in the years of
neo-realism, in 1955, when he drew up the first ideological Manifesto
of that cultural movement. His rigorously coloured images are above
all centred on the daily aspects of the ‘banalism’ of advertisement,
on a urban kitsch, on which he insistently dwelt also in the past.
Italo Zannier si è dedicato alla fotografia, come operatore professionista, dal 1952 al 1976. Ha operato soprattutto nel settore dell'architettura
e dell'industria, realizzando innumerevoli fotolibri sul paesaggio italiano
tra il 1967 ed il 1976 anno in cui smise di fotografare per dedicarsi quasi
esclusivamente alla storia della fotografia e alla didattica. Nel 2006 ha
ripreso l’attività di fotografo con un impegno analogo a quello degli

The church of S. Nicoleto, with its unfinished façade, dates back to 1626. Its foundation
however goes back to more ancient times and it had an outstanding role at the time of the
Serenissima Republic of Venice for various reasons. For example, it was here that Doge
Domenico Selvo was crowned in 1071, while the St. Mark’s Basilica was still under construction. What is left from the first construction are two foliage capitals in the “VenetoBizantino” style, and, inside the church, some parts of the mosaic floor dating back to the
XI century. The relics of S. Nicola di Mira were miraculously recovered and brought here in
1099. S. Nicola is the patron saint of mariners and sailors, travellers, young maidens and
children. The Doge and the Serenissima Signoria, on the occasion of Ascension Day (or
Sensa in Venetian dialect), used to meet at San Nicoletto. The feast, which is still celebrated today on May 9, is also known as ‘Marriage to the Sea’ and it recalls the conquest of
Dalmatia in 1000. The patriarch used to bless the sea while the Doge threw a wedding ring
in it as to signify the dominion of the Serenissima Republic over the sea. Then, the parade
used to go back to the port of S. Nicolò, where a solemn mass used to take place, followed
by folk feasts and dances.

E’ però di fondazione molto più antica, ed era importante ai tempi della Serenissima
Repubblica di Venezia per varie ragioni: proprio qui fu incoronato, per esempio, il Doge Domenico Selvo nel 1071,
mentre era ancora in costruzione la Basilica di San Marco. Della prima costruzione rimangono, all’ingresso del convento, due bei capitelli veneto-bizantini a fogliame e, all’interno della chiesa, alcune tracce del pavimento a mosaico del sec. XI. Nel 1099 furono trasportate qui, dopo un ritrovamento miracoloso, alcune reliquie di S. Nicola di Mira:
S. Nicola è il patrono di marinai e naviganti, di viaggiatori, giovani nubili e fanciulli. Ogni anno il Doge e la Signoria,
in occasione della Festa dell’Ascensione (la Sensa), si ricavano a San Nicoletto. La festa,che si celebra ancora oggi
il 9 maggio, è detta anche Sposalizio con il mare e ricorda la conquista della Dalmazia avvenuta nel 1000. Il Patriarca
benediva il mare mentre il Doge gettava tra le onde una vera nuziale, a significarne il dominio su di esso della
Serenissima. La processione rientrava poi al porto di S. Nicolò, dove aveva luogo una messa solenne seguita da feste
popolari e danze.
The most famous Basilica in Venice. The
exterior façades are decorated in
Byzantine style, with columns, basreliefs and coloured marble. On the terrace stand four imposing gilded bronze
horses. The building has five large
domes. The church is decorated inside
with gilded mosaics and treasures representing stories from the Bible.

Founded in the 12th century, this church
was rebuilt during the 17th century and,
at the beginning of the 18th century, it
was modified also its aspect, facing now
the Grand Canal: the new façade made
by the architect Domenico Rossi. The
church contains a veritable compendium of Venetian 18th -century paintings including an early work by Tiepolo.

It is an example of Gothic architecture
in Venice built between the 14th and
15th century and laid out in the form
of a Latin cross: it is composed of three
naves divided by twelve huge pillars.

very few remains of the ancient building, modified during the XV century
and then restored at the beginning of
the XIX by the architect Davide Rossi.
He perfectly harmonized his NeoClassical choises with the original late
Gothic structure.

MADONNA DELL'ORTO

Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San
Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto
when an imagine of the Virgin, found
in a garden nearby, was brought in the
church itself. It is a typical Venetian
Gothic religious buildings. It was
Tintoretto’s parish church and he is
buried with his family in the chapel to
the right of the high altar.

In the middle of the 17th century,
Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the
Republic of Venice’s Senate decided
that a church should have been built,
dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for
Health (salute). Between eleven plans
presented, it was chosen the one by
Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple
having a central area on an octagonal
plan, dominated by a huge dome
with great arches.

According to the legend, this is one of
the eight churches founded by St.
Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII
century, and dedicated to the Virgin
who appeared in a dream to the
Bishop. However, the church, as we
can see it nowadays, was built in 1492
by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance.
The building has a Greek cross pattern, with three naves and the roof in
the shape of a cross vault.

One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s
architecture, and by some considered his
masterpiece, this church was built as a
result of a motion carried by the Senate
after the plague that struck Venice in
1576.
It is a votive temple dedicated to the
Redeemer.

The exterior of the hexagonal apse is

The old church, which belonged to the
nuns of the convent bearing the same
name, is located near the main church,
which was built by Codussi between
1480 and 1500. The new façade is a
typical example of Venetian Renaissance. Two rows of columns with beautiful capitals divided the interior into
three aisles. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings.

SANTA MARIA DEL ROSARIO
CHIESA DEI GESUATI
Built by the Carmelites and dedicated
to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade,
made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style.
Once there was also a marvellous
vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by
Austrian bombs.
To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.
This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a
Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest
monument of this type preserved in
the lagoon. The simple and solemn
interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics.
To see: the mosaics of the small apse on
ble portal attributed to Bartolomeo Bon.
The interior is divided into three wide
longitudinal Greek marble naves, the
presbytery has interesting inlaid wooden
choir stalls and the ceiling is shaped like
an inverted ship’s hull.

Battesimo di Cristo” by Paris Bordone.
The church of the Jesuits was built
between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they
took the place of the Jesuits, in order to
replace the small church that still stands
beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author
of the church’s design and of the internal
decoration, assisted by two great artists
of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and
Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with
its single nave, side chapels and a deep
presbytery, is beautifully balanced.

Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by
Tintoretto.
The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario
was founded before 1071, but nothing
remains of the primitive building, due to
the devastating fire that swept through
the Rialto area in 1514. The current
building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with
many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that
used the church premises.
To see: The altarpieces by Titian and by
Pordenone and the frescoes in the
cupola came to light again during the
restoration work.

It’s one of the six Scuole Grandi and,
according to Venice history, art and culture, it’s considered one of the greatest. The
building is a splendid Renaissance architecture example. The elegant double
stairway inside, lit with large arched windows, was built by Codussi. The beautiful
exterior Renaissance iconostasis, with its
carved decoration, was designed by P.
Lombardo.

to the beautiful beaches
but also to one of the most
active industries of the
peninsula. But apart from
the small scale marine,
which is certainly spreading
at an extraordinary pace in
the mainland (the natural
mouth of which is mainly
the Venetian coast), what is
increasingly growing is the
market of superyachts
(over 24 metres). It is
enough to move a few kilometres away from the
crowded beaches, towards
the inland, to discover
extraordinary artistic, cultural and historical elements or even only wine
and food specialities which
deserve on their own a specialized type of tourism.

Few tourists realize that Venice has its own beach. It
is as if the city’s numerous ar tistic and cultural
attractions leave no spare time for sun-tanning or for
a bath in the sea. The beach of Lido owes its fame to
its natural dunes of fine and golden sand and to its
clean seawater, which make of Lido one of the most
fascinating and prestigious seaside resor ts of the area
of Venice. Lido di Venezia has always attracted elite
tourism. The first resor t dates back to the far 1857
yet the real boom in quality international tourism
came with the construction of the Hotel Des Baines
in 1900 which attracted elites and was renowned for
its fashionable social life. The Lido beach has always
been characterized by the “Capanna”, a lar ge cabin
with a small veranda and an outside cur tain.
“The queen of the night”, “The paradise of the young”, “The glamour catwalk”. It doesn’t matter how it is described, Jesolo Lido
remains the centre of amusement par excellence of the Adriatic.
Almost two thousand shops and clubs open till late at night, large
multi-storey discos, pubs, piano bar, amusement arcades, and funfairs. And even more, pizzerias, restaurants, snack bars and eateries. Traditional appointments like the maritime feasts in
Cortellazzo – town close to Jesolo – can certainly not fail to be
mentioned. Four hundred hotels and, altogether, fifteen thousand
villas, apartments and rooms for rent and a dozen campsites and
holiday villages. In Jesolo – a 15-kilometre stretch of land with its
soft, fine and golden sand of Dolomitic origin spreading up to the
rivers Sile and Piave – amusement, for young people and families
alike, is guaranteed. The city’s tourist centres are three: the ‘Centro’
(centre), ‘Faro’ (lighthouse area) and ‘Pineta’ (pinewood area).
Pochi turisti si rendono conto che Venezia è una città
con la spiaggia. È come se fra le tante attrattive artistiche e culturali di Venezia non si trovasse il tempo
anche per la tintarella e il bagno in mare. Eppure la
spiaggia del Lido deve la sua fama alle dune naturali
di sabbia fine e dorata e all'acqua pulita e ferma, che
fanno di questa località balneare la più affascinante e
prestigiosa del Veneziano. Da sempre Lido di Venezia
è stata meta di un turismo d’elite. Il primo stabilimento risale al lontano 1857 ma la vera esplosione del
turismo internazionale di qualità arrivò con la costruzione dell’Hotel Des Bains nel 1900 che attirò il bel
mondo e la vita mondana che lo caratterizzava.
Caratteristica della spiaggia del Lido è, da sempre, la
"Capanna", una grande cabina con la veranda e la
tenda aggiunte alla struttura chiusa.
“La stella della notte”; “Il paradiso dei giovani”; “La passerella del glamour”. Comunque si voglia chiamare Jesolo Lido è
l’epicentro del divertimento nell’Adriatico. Quasi duemila
negozi e locali pubblici aperti fino a tarda notte; grandi discoteche sviluppate in più piani; pub, dancing, piano bar, sale
gioco e Luna Park. E poi pizzerie, ristoranti, tavole calde e
trattorie. Non si possono dimenticare gli appuntamenti con
la tradizione come le feste marinare a Cortellazzo. 400 hotel
e 15.000 tra ville e alloggi, fra appartamenti e camere in affitto, e una decina di campeggi e villaggi turistici. Ma se alla
notte svaghi e passatempi accolgono i giovani, non mancano
attrattive anche per le famiglie che si distribuiscono su questi
quindici chilometri di sabbia morbida e finissima dal caratteristico colore ambrato dovuto all’origine dolomitica che si
allungano tra i fiumi Sile e Piave. Sono tre i centri turistici: il
Centro, il Faro e la Pineta.

Dieci chilometri di sabbia finissima, una battigia ampia per
le lunghe passeggiate, i venti dolci e costanti che rendono
l’aria morbida e l’ambiente salubre. Sottomarina e Isola
Verde godono di una spiaggia che si prolunga oltre le foci
del Brenta, fino a quelle dell’Adige. Nell’ entroterra il terreno sabbioso è particolarmente adatto alla produzione di
ortaggi. Una località balneare di antico pregio (conosciuta
intorno al IX secolo come Cludia Minor), a due passi dal
centro urbano di Chioggia, rinomata, ovviamente, come
Cludia Major. La capacità ricettiva di SottomarinaIsolaverde è davvero straordinaria: hotel di tutte le categorie, residences immersi nel verde e campeggi. Ma oltre alla
spiaggia, basta guadagnare qualche chilometro dell’entroterra per arrivare a Chioggia, storico centro di pescatori di
straordinario interesse.

Cavallino (for some years now forming an autonomous
Municipality with Treporti) is Venice’s second beach, after the
one of Lido and is a world-renowned tourist camping area.
Over the years, Cavallino, with its 15 km of seashore, has developed an accommodation network which is fully appreciated
by tourists interested in en-plein-air holidays. 26 campsites, 12
hotels, 3 pensions (boarding houses), 9 lodging houses and
various other types of accommodation are available.
Furthermore, Treporti offers numerous routes (above all cycle
ones) in the fishing areas and in the ancient rural centres. The
canals see the silent drifting of the typical boats of fishermen,
who like farmers, are jealous treasurers of ancient traditions
enriching the local cuisine. The Cavallino beach has been awarded with the Blue Flag for Quality by the Fee (Foundation for
environmental education).

Dopo il Lido, è la seconda spiaggia di Venezia (da qualche anno

environmental education) per la qualità.

With six million tourists per year, Bibione gains the first
place among all beaches for the number of arrivals. Its seaside, enriched by a thick area of maritime pines, spreads
over eight kilometres in a coast if fine sand between
Adriatico and Valle Grande, from the mouth of the
Tagliamento river to the port of Baseleghe. Its shore depth
varies from 250 metres to over 450 metres and is continually exposed to the sun. The crystal clear sea is subject to

This ancient fishermen’s village boasts one of the most beautiful
beaches of the Venetian coast spreading over 15 kilometres on
the Upper Adriatic Sea. A tourist centre featuring 200 hotels, 9
campsites and holiday resorts, 15 climatic resorts, two docks for
pleasure-boats with 900 berths. Over the years, its tourist vocation became evident with the development of the centres of
Porto Santa Margherita and Duna Verde. Caorle, city of traditions
and millenary history, combines amusement and culture. It also
offers interesting and widely appreciated initiatives like the
“Scogliera Viva” in June with its sculptures on the rocks of the sea
dyke. Caorle is also renowned for its deep bond with the lagoon.
These waters inspired Hernest Hemingway, passionate hunter,

Bibione
Con sei milioni di turisti all’anno Bibione si piazza fra le
prime località balneari in Italia per numero di presenze.
La spiaggia, arricchita da una folta macchia di pini marittimi,
si allunga per otto chilometri in una penisola di sabbie finissime tra Adriatico e Valle Grande, dalla foce del Tagliamento
al porto di Baseleghe; la profondità della proda sabbiosa
varia da 250 metri a oltre 450 metri ed è perennemente
esposta al sole. Il mare limpido è percorso da correnti
costanti che ne garantiscono l’ossigenazione e il ricambio
idrosalino.
Articolata nei nuclei di Bibione Spiaggia, Lido del Sole e

environment healthy. Sottomarina’s beach spreads out to the
mouths of the Brenta and Adige rivers, up to the small town of
Isolaverde renowned for its sandy terrain which is particularly fit
for growing vegetables. This prestigious and ancient seaside resort
– known as Cludia Minor in the ninth century – is only a few steps
away from the equally renowned urban centre of Chioggia – also
known as Cludia Major. The Sottomarina-Isolaverde resort offers

few kilometres away from the beach, in the inland, you will find

THE NUMBER OF MEGA YACHTS MOORED IN VENICE ARE ON THE INCREASE
In 2007 almost one million cruise passengers will be reached.
With 4 new moors entirely destined to mega yachts soon becoming operational at the ‘Adriatica’ dock – located in the suggestive area of the Zattere in the Venetian historic centre – the
cruise terminal of the Port of Venice, with its 11 ‘alongside’
berths and 9 inbetween the “briccolas”, is an outstanding destination for mega yachts in the Mediterranean. In order to
respond to the increasing demand in berths coming from large
private boats, Venezia Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A. founded two
specialized companies, of which it is a majority shareholder:
Venice Yacht Pier S.r.l. (V.Y.P) – established to facilitate the
development of the yachting industry in Venice thus enhancing
at the same time the reception capacity of mega yachts – and
Venice Yachts and Ships Assistance (V.Y.S.A.) – consortium of
companies providing services in the technical and nautical sector to the market of yachts and mega yachts. 2006 saw 310
visits, with 54 yachts with a length of over 50 metres and 25
yachts of over 60 metres. That marks an increase by 1,450%
with respect to 5 years ago. These luxury boats potentially
spend from 800 to 2000 euros per day in various types of services such as steering, moorings, assistance
and so on. If one adds the expenses for
transport, hotels, shopping, excursions,
fuel and food, each of these boats would
create a turnover that is five times higher.
885.000 cruise passengers chose Venice as port in 2006 and 2007 is forecast to reach one million passengers with an increase by 11% with respect
to the previous season. Remarkable figures that place Venice at the second
place among the homeport cruise ports in the Mediterranean Sea and that
highlight the significant achievements in the port infrastructure development managed by the Venezia Terminal Passeggeri (VTP). In 2007, 85
ships will be leaving the Port of Venice for a total amount of 444 visits all
in all, with a wide range of itineraries guaranteed to all its passengers leading them to the discovery of the more fascinating destinations of the
Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean. Also this year will see the presence
of the most prestigious cruise companies like Costa Crociere, MSC
Crociere, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Holland American Lines
and Carnival Cruises which will contribute to enhancing the prestige of
the Venice tourist port. The Serenissima has also been the scene of the
opening of the Carnival Freedom as well as the port from which the maiden cruise of Costa Serena - Costa Crociere’s new flagship - sailed.

posizionano Venezia al 2° posto tra i porti crociere homeport a livello mediterraneo e che dimostrano il considerevole sviluppo registrato in questi anni
dalle infrastrutture portuali gestite dalla Venezia Terminal Passeggeri. Nel
2007 saranno 85 le navi che salperanno dal Porto di Venezia per un totale di
444 toccate complessive, garantendo ai passeggeri un’ampia scelta di itinerari volti alla scoperta delle più belle destinazioni dell’Adriatico e del
Mediterraneo orientale. Anche quest’anno infatti le più prestigiose compagnie di crociera tra le quali Costa Crociere, MSC Crociere, Royal Caribbean,

The entire Venetian coast – from Chioggia (southward) to Bibione
(towards the Friuli Venezia Giulia region) – is characterised by the
presence of a long series of ports and marinas for pleasure boat tourism. Unbelievably, and much is being done to improve this situation, Venice is the city which is less served from a nautical point of

Enrico Gabriele’s job, chef at the Ca’ dei Frati restaurant on the San Clemente island, starts
before he gets into the kitchen, much before indeed. It starts in the mornings spent in search of
an exclusive product, of the best vegetables and again it starts when he assists to the cutting of
the meat. “The attention to details, the top quality of the materials used, the exclusiveness of
the product. All of these things have to be perceived by the client, almost without actually realizing it”. That is Gabriele’s philosophy, professional with twenty years experience in the best
Italian (Cortina, Costa Smeralda, Venice) and foreign (Paris, Switzerland) restaurants. The
menu offers five starters, as well as five first courses, four meat and four fish second courses. A
serving trolley with a selection of fourteen types of cheese offers an international “excursion”.
The canteen features 320 varieties of wines and most of them are white wines from the
Triveneto area. Ca’ dei Frari is located in the very heart of the lagoon and it can boast not only
a prestigious cuisine “direction” but also a unique location and a superb panorama.

dettagli, l’elevata qualità delle materie prime, l’esclusività del prodotto. Tutte cose che il cliente
deve percepire, quasi senza rendersene conto”: per Gabriele, professionista con un ventennio
di carriera nei migliori ristoranti italiani (Cortina, Costa Smeralda, Venezia) ed esteri (Parigi,
Svizzera) è questa la filosofia del ristorante. La carte è composta da cinque antipasti, altrettanti

he prawns (scampi), inhabitants of the sea, just like lobsters, European lobsters (astice), slipper lobsters (canocia), large shrimps, crabs and spider crabs (granseola),
belong to the shellfish family. They can be found in any see,
but…the most tasty ones are the local scampi that are caught in
the Adriatic Sea, more precisely nearby the Istrian coasts.
Scampi are normally prepared shell-less and then boiled, or cut
into two parts and then broiled, or alla buzzara (cooked with
tomato, garlic and lemon). Here, we recommend a different
recipe. Since their main characteristic is that of protecting its
delicious meat with a hard shell made of articulated joints enabling their movement, we suggest cooking these delicious titbits
in the oven at 200°C covered with homemade “fillo pasta” and
seasoned only with black pepper and coarse salt.

“granxeola” fanno parte della famiglia dei crostacei.
Esistono in tutti i mari ma… quelli più saporiti sono gli scampi
nostrani che si pescano nell’Adriatico e precisamente verso le
coste Istriane. Lo scampo solitamente si cuoce sgusciato e bollito,
oppure tagliato a metà alla griglia, ma anche intero alla buzzara.
In questa occasione lo proponiamo in maniera diversa. Essendo
la sua principale caratteristica quella di proteggere la propria prelibata carne coprendola con una dura corazza, dotata di giunture
articolate che ne consentono il movimento, abbiamo pensato di
cuocere questi prelibati bocconcini in forno a 200° coprendoli
con una pasta a fillo (fatta in casa come da ricetta) condita semplicemente con pepe nero e sale di rocca macinato grosso.

Roll out the dough as it is done for the galani.
Season it with minced pepper and salt. Cut the
dough into 16 strips of about 5 cm. Coil up the
scampi with the strips. Place the shell fish in a
baking tray with wholes and cook in the oven
at 200°C for about 15 minutes. Serve the crispy
roll with fresh local salad.

500g superfine flour, 250g tepid water, 120g
olive oil, 5g salt.
Work all the ingredients energically until
you get a soft and elastic dough. Let it rest
for about one hour.
Stendere la pasta fillo come si usa fare per i
galani. Condirla con pepe macinato grosso e
sale. Tagliare 16 striscie da 5 cm , avvolgere con
le strisce gli scampi. Porre i crostacei su una
teglia forata e cuocere in forno a 200°C per
circa 15 min. Servire abbinando questo involucro croccante con insalatine novelle.
Ricetta per la pasta fillo
500g farina 00, 250g acqua tiepida
120g olio d’oliva, 5g sale.
Impastare energicamente tutti gli ingredienti fino ad ottenere una pasta molle ed elastica. Lasciare riposare per un’ora circa.

La mostra dei Maestri muranesi reca testimonianza
dell’arte millenaria della lavorazione del vetro e
dello splendore di Venezia in una piccola città
toscana che sa offrire, riteniamo, un contesto adeguato a tale presenza. Incontro ideale tra terra e
fuoco, il tema della mostra. La terra è quella delle
Colline Metallifere, ricca di giacimenti minerari, una
terra scavata e percorsa da gallerie alla ricerca di
preziosi metalli sin dai tempi degli Etruschi: il piombo, l’argento ed anche le ceneri di pirite, per anni
elementi della composizione del vetro. Il fuoco è
quello di Murano, che brucia nelle bocche dei forni,
oggi come mille anni fa, per rinnovare l’alchemica
trasformazione della sabbia in vetro.

GROSSETO
The Murano Masters exhibition bears testament to
the millennial art of glass making and to the
splendour of Venice in a small Tuscan city which
we believe to be a worthy setting for such an
event. The theme of the exhibition is the ideal
encounter between earth and fire. The earth is
that of the “Metalifferous Hills”, an area rich in
mineral deposits, a land criss-crossed by galleries excavated by those searching for precious
metals since the time of Etruscans: lead, silver
and pyrite ash have for years been elements in
the composition of glass.

Padua celebrates Fulvio Pendini. The centenary of the birth is the occasion to rediscover a protagonist of
the cultural scene of the city and country. His activity finds his place in the past century artistic scenario of
Padua: the “cantiere del Novecento al Bo”, wanted by Carlo Anti and directed by Gio Ponti, and the activities of the “Gruppo N”, leading exponent of the optical-kinetic movements of the first sixties. Fulvio
Pendini is to be placed between those two periods, thus embodying the ideal figure of an artist who as
been devoted, during his entire life, to painting starting from classicism through the lines of Giotto, to the
use of more primitive twentieth-century lines based on the bustle of popular feasts in squares and yards
and finally to stylised Medieval representations of Padua and other cities.

The exhibition of Mascherini is an opportunity to retrace a route in the twentieth century art expressed in sculpture
as well as in painting and architecture. The single ticket combining a visit to the exhibition on show at the Pescherie
Centrali with a visit to the Museo Revoltella. Indeed, the city itinerary is coupled to a journey in the twentieth century art with all its most interesting forms of expression. The thorough retrospective dedicated to Mascherini is, with
its structure, also a journey within the Italian and European sculpture of the Nineteenth century. The exhibition
route begins, however, at the Museo Revoltella, where the visitor has the opportunity of seeing, through a number of “monuments” of the first twentieth century, the historic context in which Mascherini had begun his career.

La mostra di Mascherini come occasione per percorrere un itinerario d’autore dentro l’arte del Novecento
espressa nella scultura ma anche nella pittura e nell’architettura. Il biglietto unico che unisce la visita alla mostra
allestita nelle ex Pescherie Centrali con il vicino Museo Revoltella, oltre all’itinerario proposto in città, consente
infatti di immergersi dentro l’arte del Novecento in molte delle sue più interessanti espressioni. L’ampia retrospettiva dedicata a Mascherini è, per sua struttura, anche un viaggio dentro la scultura italiana ed europea del
Novecento. Il percorso della mostra inizia, però, al Museo Revoltella, dove il visitatore ha modo di vedere, attraverso alcuni “monumenti” di scultura del primo ‘900 il contesto storico in cui inizia la carriera di Mascherini.

si situa tra questi due momenti, incarnando la figura ideale di un artista che si è dedicato per tutta la vita
alla pittura partendo da un parco classicismo neo-giottesco, per poi adottare una linea di primitivismo
novecentista incentrata sull’animazione di feste popolari entro scenari di piazze e cortili e approdare infine alla rappresentazione stilizzata di matrice medioevale di Padova e di altre città.
