to my colleagues as I shut the door; the
raincoat flung over my arm I slip on in
the elevator. It’s raining. I get into the
first taxi I find after buying a small bunch
of red roses. This is our first date – and
I’m late.

Finalmente arrivo: lei è già seduta nel
ristorante. È la prima volta che un uomo
la fa attendere ed è visibilmente irritata.
Raggiungo il tavolo, appoggio le rose
sulla mia seggiola e la prendo per mano
facendola alzare: le impedisco di
pronunciare quelle frasi sarcastiche sul
mio ritardo che aveva rimuginato tra sé e
sé per i venti minuti d’attesa e, giocando
d’anticipo, la porto a ballare.
Come mandato dalla provvidenza arriva
un tango italiano enfatico e melenso,
suonato con passione dall’orchestra del
locale. Balliamo senza parlare e tutto
inizia bene.
I finally reach the restaurant where she
is already sitting at the table. It’s the first
time a man has kept her waiting and I
can see she is annoyed. When I reach
the table I put the roses on my chair and
take her hand drawing her to her feet: I
stop her from saying the sarcastic things
she has been brooding on for the twenty
minutes she has been waiting and I
make a pre-emptive strike by taking her
on to the dance floor. Providentially the
orchestra is passionately playing a
resolute and stolid Italian tango. We
dance without speaking and things are
off to a good start.

che per un attimo rimpiango.
Un amore di certo più fumoso, più
improvvisato, senza rose e senza cena,
solo Vodka and Tonic in un jazz club e
Art che svisava su di una fisa gigante la
cui mascherina sembrava il radiatore di
una Cadillac.
Mi distraggo e lei si accorge, sta quasi
per iniziare la frase cattiva sul ritardo ma

does. We sit and eat getting to know
each other. When the dessert is served
the accordion player is playing How
High the Moon. With a slight pang I
suddenly remember another date in
different city, another sweetheart.
A more certain hazy love, unrehearsed
with no roses or dinner, just Vodka and
Tonic in a jazz club where Art is twisting
on a giant accordion whose grille looks
like the radiator of a Cadillac.
She notices that I am thinking of
something else and starts to say
something nasty about being late but
just then …tun-titi-tun-tun… Rrrumba!!

Continuiamo la serata serenamente,
pizzicandoci come due innamorati al
primo appuntamento: lancio stoccate
con le parole e mi difendo parando con
i balli. Il fisarmonicista sembra essere
complice di tutto questo, navigando con
la sua band attraverso generi musicali
inconsueti per un ristorante ma
necessari, in quel momento, per i nostri
cuori appena incontratisi.

I come back to earth realising that I can’t
risk losing a rosy future for a moment of
nostalgia. The evening continues well
while we nibble each other like two
sweethearts on a first date: I thrust in
with words and fend off by dancing. The
accordion player seems to humour me
with leading his orchestra in a medley of
pieces which are unusual for a
restaurant but a must for our hearts that
are meeting for the first time.

La Excelsior, come ditta “americana”, è stata
considerata storicamente una fabbrica di
fisarmoniche a tastiera pianoforte.
In realtà nel corso dei decenni abbiamo sviluppato
collateralmente una valida linea di fisarmoniche a
bottoni o cromatiche di cui oggi il modello
Romance Gold rappresenta l’apice.
Strumento di disegno raffinato, con eleganti
rifiniture in oro, esprime un suono robusto e
potente, tipicamente nella tradizione Excelsior.
Lei è bellissima. È avvolta nel suo abito
da sera rosso, che sembra scintillare
clamorosamente infrangendosi contro il
mio gessato bianco quando balliamo
avvinghiati sulle note di una ballad o
quando ci scateniamo respingendoci e
riabbracciandoci in frenetici ritmi cubani.
Si muove con scioltezza sulle sue
scarpe eleganti dal tacco medio che
usciti dal ristorante si toglie per
volteggiare liberamente a piedi nudi e
braccia aperte sul prato del parco che
attraversiamo per raggiungere casa sua,
cantando a squarciagola la parodia di un
valzer viennese che poco prima
avevamo ballato con serietà ed aplomb,
accompagnati dall’orchestra.
She is magnificent in her red evening
dress, which sparkles against my white
pin stripes when we dance wrapped in
the notes of a ballad or when we let
ourselves going to frenetic Cuban
rhythms. She moves lightly on her
elegant medium heeled shoes which
she slips off when we leave the
restaurant throwing out her arms and
twirling bare-footed across the lawn of
the Park that we cross to reach her
home, singing at the top of our lungs a
funny version of the Viennese waltz we
had danced so seriously and with such
aplomb accompanied by the orchestra.

Di lì a qualche ora, sono di ritorno al mio
appartamento da scapolo dall’altra parte
della città. È già mattino e mi trovo
nell’ennesimo taxi, con al volante un
patito di musica Musette.
Cerco di ricordare il volto di quel
fisarmonicista della sera prima che mi ha
accompagnato come un angelo custode
nei primi passi del mio nuovo amore.
Non ci riesco. Ricordo ogni nota della
sua musica ma non il suo volto.
Ricordo le sue mani, con un rubino da
fisarmonicista all’anulare destro, ricordo
la sua fisarmonica nera con qualche
perlina che, riflettendo la poca luce
rompeva la penombra, ma non ricordo il
suo volto.

It’s dawn and I am in yet another taxi
whose driver is a Musette music buff.
I try to remember the face of the
accordion player the night before who
had accompanied me like a guardian
angel in the first steps of my new love.
I remember every note of his music, but
I can’t remember his face.
I remember his hands, with the ruby that
all accordion player wear on his right
ring finger, I remember his black
accordion with its pearls catching stray
rays of light in the dimness, but I can’t
remember his face.

Apro l’armadio e prendo la vecchia

while my head buzzes with Jeanne’s

I take my father’s old accordion out of
the cupboard and try, unsuccessfully, to
play something that sounds like the
music that is running through my mind.
From tomorrow I will be looking for an

sono sfinito per riuscire a parlare.

Amongst cat calls, applauses and the
deafening clinking of knives on bottles
everyone shouts hysterically “Play again,
play again!!” to the diatonic accordion
player who announces the last dance. I
get up unsteadily and join the shouts for
an encore: I am too exhausted to speak.
The diatonic accordion player smiles
pleasantly without showing signs of
weariness after five hours of performance,
and starts a fiery polka.

The music becomes group therapy, a
therapy of movement, force, hysteria,
warmth; a therapy of joy, freedom and in
the end... peace. When we dance we
throw out physical energy which comes
back to as physical power.
I am exhausted, I don’t have the energy
to move a finger, but thanks to the fiery
music of the diatonic accordion, I still
find the strength to dance effortlessly,
until dawn, until the sun rises high and
bright, in me as well.

Mi concentro nell’ascolto di una fuga, e
mi diverto canticchiando una sonata. Mi
perdo nel minimale, mi stupisco nel
barocco, mi rinfranco nel classico ed
esplodo con il contemporaneo!
La fisarmonica è ora lo strumento con

Separate swell pedal and foot-switches supplied provide

Cielo, spazio, acque fresche e leggere
nuvole, gioia new age. Mi rilasso, rigenero,
rinfresco ascoltando musica elettronica.
Diluendo il suono grumoso di una
fisarmonica con una base d’archi, il selz di
un sax, l’arancio di un trombone e la
cannella di una tromba, si ottiene un
cocktail tonificante di suoni vitaminici.
A volte li preferisco diluiti nel celeste di
suoni sintetici, distillati per aprire l’orizzonte
mentale e sensoriale a paradisi artificiali, in
cui la natura è superata dalla creazione
dell’uomo. Musica sinfonica, da film, ballo
liscio, evergreen, sottofondi longue: tutta la
musica della storia mi attraversa senza
traumi,
solleticandomi
leggermente,
avvolgendomi serenamente. Nell’azzurro
del cielo ho coltivato lo spirito.

Watering down the furry sound of an
accordion with a base of strings, the Seltz
of a sax, the orange of a trombone and the
cinnamon of a trumpet, putting together a
cocktail of sounds full of vitamins.
At times I prefer to water them down in sky
blue synthetic sounds, distilled so as to
open mental and sensorial horizons to
artificial paradises, where nature is
defeated by the creation of man.
Symphonic music, sound tracks, dance
music, evergreen and lounge music: all
the music in history flows through me
painlessly, tickling me gently, embracing
me peacefully. In blue skies above I have
nourished my spirit.
