One can feel the air of heaviness among the disciples as Jesus prepares them for his imminent violent death. He had prepared them for this earlier as opposition to him became more intense, but his followers were confused and were slow to understand what he was trying to teach them. And who could blame them? After all, they had come to depend on Jesus so much. Their identities were embedded in him. They loved him and he loved them as dear friends. Within a few short years he had become the heart of their lives. They would feel lost without his presence. In this solemn atmosphere where it was becoming clearer by the hour that Jesus would soon be killed, he had a surprisingly upbeat message of hope and life for them: It is to your advantage that I go. If I do not go, the Spirit will not come. But if I do go, the Spirit will come and lead you to the truth. The Spirit will teach you all things. Jesus also promised a future reunion with his followers when he would gather them into a community of perfect joy… but first it was necessary for him to take leave of them. It wasn’t easy for Jesus either. His deep cry in the garden of Gethsemane was to ask his Father to free him from drinking the bitter chalice placed before him. Yet he saw his departure as bringing a special gift and blessing to his followers. Once he had gone away, the Holy Spirit would come and complete the Father’s work in the disciples. Jesus’ passing was necessary so that the Spirit could purify the disciples for their mission. We can sympathise with the disciples, especially if we have grieved over the loss of someone who was truly significant in our lives. The loss and absence of a loved one can leave a huge void in our hearts. We can be deeply distressed at losing someone who has been close to us, especially if that someone has helped to give us our identity and purpose in life. Yet our gospel message teaches us that such difficult experiences can provide the necessary space for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives…depending on how we respond. The shock of loss and grief can lead us to ponder the meaning of our own lives, our own mortality, leading perhaps to a recording of our life’s priorities. Such times of stress can also be times for real growth, for emerging from the shadows of our heroes, and for claiming our God-given uniqueness and our life’s mission. Paradoxically, it can be in letting go that we allow real human and divine communion to take place in a community of perfect joy as the Lord promised. «blank» MERCY COLLEGE COBURG COBURG AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT For those who were not at Mass last Sunday, I announced the sad news that I am being transferred from St Joseph the Worker on Wednesday 4 July. Fr Burns will also retire as of this date. Sadly, I have been unable to keep up with the many demands of the parish and my study commitments at Monash University. Recent illness in my family has also been a source of concern to me. The Archbishop will send me to another parish where I will study full-time and assist with week-end Masses. I thank all parishioners for your prayers and support. I have truly had over 4 years of very blessed ministry in this parish. I will keep all parishioners informed once a new Parish Priest is announced.
