INTERVISTA A MACEO PARKER, Mr. FUNKY MUSIC MACHINE

Gavorrano 11 agosto 2008: Maceo Parker arriva con al sua band a Gavorrano l’11 agosto per una data del Grey Cat
Jazz Festival. Parker è uno dei nomi più importanti della musica funky e ha dato il suo contributo a molti grandi artisti a
partire da James Brown negli anni ’60. Successivamente Maceo Parker ha suonato con i migliori musicisti quali George
Clinton, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot
Chilli Peppers fino alle recenti collaborazioni con Prince. Nella sua carriera da solista è fondamentale il terzo album Life
on Planet Groove (1992) che lo consacra tra i grandi autori del funk.
Quanto all’attività concertistica Maceo Parker è da anni in tour senza sosta e fa una media di 250 date all’anno. Il suo
ultimo album Roots & Grooves con la WDR Big Band è un tributo a Ray Charles che Parker cita come una delle
influenze più importanti nella sua musica.
D. Mister Maceo Parker, è in tour in Italia ed oggi arriva a Gavorrano al Teatro delle Rocce. Come è stato fare un
concerto qui?
R. “Ci siamo divertiti davvero. Abbiamo provato a suonare musica che alla gente piaccia ballare, che piaccia per fare
festa e per divertirsi. E questo è ciò che facciamo. Non bisogna caricarsi i problemi, non bisogna caricarsi di
problematiche politiche, riduciamo queste cose. Solo divertimento. Questo è ciò che vogliamo dare. Vogliamo dare alla
gente il modo di divertirsi. E quando lo facciamo, anche noi stessi ci divertiamo”.
D. Dopo una lunga carriera lei gira il mondo, suona con grandi musicisti, lei stesso è un grande musicista, pubblica
album: non si sente un po’ fortunato?
R. “Si mi sento fortunato. Perché è facile riflettere sul cosa fare nella vita quando si hanno 15 o 16 anni, immaginarsi
cosa fare nella vita. Sapevo che la musica mi avrebbe in qualche modo coinvolto, ma non sapevo a che livello. Tanto
tempo fa pensavo che forse potevo essere un insegnante. Perché pensavo, vado a scuola prendo una laurea e insegno.
Ma quando sono diventato più grande, più o meno a 19 o 20 anni forse 21, ho pensato che volevo fare esattamente ciò
che sto facendo adesso, cioè girare il mondo e con la musica dare alla gente un po’ di forza in più per vivere la loro vita
quotidiana giorno dopo giorno, settimana dopo settimana, anno dopo anno. E questo è ciò che è diventato importante per
me e per la band, ci fa davvero piacere farlo”.

D. Questo periodo dell’anno in Italia è chiamato delle “stelle cadenti” e quando se ne vede una bisogna esprimere un
desiderio. Quale desiderio vuole esprimere Maceo Parker?
R. “Sono fortunato che posso fare questo. E’ quasi un hobby per me, fare quello che faccio e divertirmi ancora in buona
salute. Se vedo una stella cadente chiedo di continuare a fare ciò che faccio, niente altro. Mi piace davvero andare sul
palco e quando dico, e avrete potuto sentirmelo dire più di una volta a nome di tutti noi, we-love-you, lo dico sul serio. Lo
sai, semplicemente amo la gente.

Gavorrano: Maceo Parker arrives with his band in Gavorrano the 11th of August for a Grey Cat Jazz Festival date.
Parker is one of the most important personality of funky music and he gave a prominent contribute to many big artists
beginning with James Brown in the sixties. Afterwards Maceo Parker played with the best funky musicians like George
Clinton, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot
Chilli Peppers until recent collaboration with Prince. In his solo carrier crucial is his third album Life on Planet Groove
(1992) that brings Parker’s name in between the best authors of funk. Maceo Parker is on a non stop tour and plays an
average of 250 dates per year.

Q. Mr. Maceo Parker you are in tour in Italy and today you arrived in Gavorrano at Teatro delle Rocce. How was the
concert?
A. “It’s a real good time. We tried to play music where people could feel good about dancing and about partying and about
having good time. And that’s what it’s about. Just not caring about problems, not caring about political issues, inhibit that
stuff. Just have good time. That’s what we provide. We provide how let the people to have a good time. And when we do
that, we had good time as well”.
Q. After a long carrier you are going around the world playing with big musicians, you are a big musician too, you publish
albums: don’t you feel a little bit lucky?
A. “Yes I really do … because it is easy to reflect about we do in life when you are 15 years old 16 years old about life trying
to figure out what you wanna do with your life? I knew music would be involve somehow me but I didn’t know at what
level. A long time ago I thought I perhaps could be a teacher, because I thought so you did, you know you go to school
you have a degree and you teach. But then as I got older, nearly 19 or 20 maybe 21, I thought I would like to do exactly
what I am doing now. It means to travel around the world and to give music to people to give a little strength to do day
after day, week after week, year after year. And it’s what become important to me and the band we really enjoyed to do
that”.
Q. This period of the year in Italy we call it “period of the falling stars” and when you see a falling star, we say, you can
express a desire. So please, Mr. Parker, express a desire.
A. “I just want …. I am lucky that I can do this. It’s almost like a hobby. To do you know what I do and still enjoy with a good
health. You know once you see a falling star it’s just continuing what I am doing, not different. I really enjoy performing
and when I say, could you hear me say it more than once and behalf of all of us, We -love -you, I really mean that. You
know, I just love people”.
