Vino...
e dell’impegno.
Vinicola Serena è tutto questo da 130 anni.
Lasciate che vi raccontiamo la sua storia...
Sarà una storia Serena. Parola nostra!
Wine...
The dictionary gives a simple and somewhat hasty definition of wine:
a drink derived from the alcoholic fermentation of grape must (..).
But those who produce and appreciate wine know that there is a lot more behind a good bottle
of wine.
Fertile soil, sun, water, the love and care of a farmer, selection of the best grapes, careful and patient
processing and the company of friends.
This concept is also valid for people like us, who bottle wine.
Capital is all it takes to build and develop a company, but in order to build a company reality
that is renowned and important, which lasts more than a hundred years, it takes more than just
money. It takes passion, dedication, hard work, attention to detail and, at times, the courage to
take risks. Such are the ingredients that make a company solid and help it grow and evolve over
time, adapting to market changes in order to guarantee customers top quality and commitment.
Vinicola Serena has been all of this for 130 years.
Allow us to tell you our story...
It will be a “serene” story. You have our word!

Processione in Piazza San Marco
Gentile Bellini
This canvas, realised by Gentile in 1496, has particular historical value for us. It depicts the
procession of the schools in St. Mark’s Square, on 25th April 1444. On the left side of the
painting, the homes (the old Procuratie) reserved for the Procurators who served the Republic
of the Serenissima are visible. Lorenzo Pietro Giovanni Serena, a Venetian Patrician who was
born in 1602, who is remembered in the family tree, was one of them.

produzioni artistiche e grandi imprese.
secolo.

documents conserved by the Serenas

secolo. Giovanni, nato nel 1420, è Giureconsulto;
THE SERENA STORY. SINCE 1881.
nel XII secolo e, fra segrete ricette alchemiche e
virtù artigiane, diviene insuperabile arte. I maestri
The tradition of glass in Venice took on consistency
in the XII century. As secret recipes and alchemies
were handed down and in virtue of artisan skill, it
became an insuperable art. Master glassblowers
in Venice established one of the most renowned
schools in the world; Antonio Serena attended this
school in the XVII century.
E
very idea, every entrepreneurial spirit, hides
a land and a family among its historical
papers. Even the sun of the Serena logo has
spread its rays over a number of generations
and over several noble lands. The mother earth of Casa
Serena is in Bassano, Trevignano, Cornuda, Susegana,
Conegliano and Arfanta di Tarzo. The geographic
expression of the March of Treviso, which was coined
during medieval times, definitely indicated a much more
extensive area than it does today, as it went from Lake
Garda to the Kras [the Karst Plateau]. With the flowering
of chivalry, which definitely went well with a toast, the
March was defined as “joyous and loving”. What was the
10
“sun” of this land? The motor of this land bore a highsounding name: Venice, la Serenissima. The lagoon city,
at the time, was the proud capital of a noble republic,
where state affairs were combined with commerce,
maritime and terrestrial trade, artistic production and
great enterprises. The Serena family, as testified to in
documents dating from 1390, had always been a part of
this Venetian nobility and was to be one of the families
that later distinguished itself in a special entrepreneurial
venture: the art of glass. There was a certain Pietro in
our family tree as early as 1390, followed by Antonio,
who was a Deputy of the Serenissima parliament in the
XIV century. Giovanni, born in 1420, was a Jurisconsult;
Francesco was a Deputy at the beginning of the XVI
century, as was Giovanni Domenico, born in 1559. In the
Seventeenth century Antonio Serena moved his family
to Bassano, while members of the family continued
to occupy important public posts. Giuseppe was an
ambassador of the Serenissima, while Domenico, born
in 1665, was a Deputy and was named Count in 1690
by Duke Ranuccio Farnese II, while Giuseppe Serena,
in 1709, was appointed Count by Maria Kazimiera of
Poland. During the XVIII century, the Serena family
moved to Signoressa di Trevignano, in the heart of the
Treviso March, where Pietro, the founder of the company
was born. It was 1839, a year of great social upheaval: the
first issue of a magazine that was to become famous was
published in Milan, the Polytechnic; photography took
its first steps and the House of Bourbon inaugurated the
Naples-Portici railway line on the 3rd of October.
We were on the threshold of the modern age.
Come
testimonia l’iscrizione in un antico sigillo di Treviso, i confini naturali furono poi
fissati fra Prealpi venete, fiume Musone e Laguna di Venezia.
The joyous and loving March. The Treviso March was described in this manner
in medieval times, when it extended well beyond its current boundaries, from
Lake Garda to the Karst Plateau. As testified by an inscription on an ancient seal
of Treviso, the natural boundaries were set between the Venetian Pre-Alpine
Mountains, the Musone River and the Venice Lagoon.

el lontano 1881 a Crocetta Trevigiana, vicino
a Cornuda, il nobile Pietro Serena diveniva
dunque imprenditore, folgorato sulla via di
una vitivinicoltura antica e di tradizione. L’11
Luciano: Lino, Corrado e Adolfo, continuarono
botti in legno.
L’impiego in
epoca successiva della tecnologia del fusto
a pressione, affonda le sue radici proprio
nelle esigenze quotidiane di lavoro in
azienda. Il muovere vino, nel nostro caso, è
stato realmente motore di progresso.

THE SERENA STORY. SINCE 1881.
I
n the now distant 1881, in Crocetta Trevigiana, near Cornuda, nobleman
Pietro Serena became an entrepreneur, converted “on the road to
Damascus” by an ancient winegrowing culture and tradition. On the 11th
of January, at the Scala Theatre of Milan, the year had been inaugurated
with an epoch-making premier, the Excelsior Ballet, which decreed the triumph
of science. Allegorically, the public witnessed the victory of Progress, with various
scenes reserved for the great inventions of the period. On the 7th of July of that
year, the most famous puppet in the world was born in Collodi, Pinocchio. Again,
in 1881, two illustrious geniuses of the modern age were born: artist Pablo Picasso
and the artist who painted automobiles, Ettore Bugatti. These were difficult years:
the cities became more populous, while rural areas were poor, emigrants crowded
the wharfs of Genoa and Naples.

be seen in the upper right and further down, his wife
Maddalena, with the newborn Gerardo in her arms.
In this context, Pietro Serena did not loose heart, but began
trading wine in wooden casks with Cadore, with the help of
his son Luciano. This fact has remained in the annals of the
company for the last 130 years: the Serena company still has
some historical customers from that area today. On both
shores of the Piave River, before World War I, and after
Mussolini and the Second World War, there was a certain
amount of upheaval, but Pietro’s business was handed down
intact to the third generation. Luciano’s sons, Lino, Corrado
and Adolfo, continued the tradition of unbottled wine
together, albeit they also used more manageable demijohns,
which were added to the wooden casks. The problem of
how and where to place the wine to conserve it in the best
manner and for optimal movement was to become crucial for
the destiny of the company. The technology of pressurised
drums in later years was founded precisely on the company’s
daily needs. Moving the wine, in our case, was a true motor
of progress.

terre, Luciano Serena fonda successivamente
dell’azienda a Susegana. Fino agli anni sessanta, i

poi come impiegati. Per i due fratelli arrivano le
lauree e decidono, infine, di collaborare in modo
stabile con il padre. In particolare, Gerardo entra
chimica. E di nuovo, qualcosa accade.

allowed him to market bottled wine in one and two litre returnable bottles in baskets, as well as wine in demijohns.
Thanks to this innovation, Adolfo Serena enjoyed great success and developed his market in the area of Treviso and
Belluno. His two children, Gerardo and Giorgio, born respectively in 1949 and 1951, decided to undertake different
courses of study in the world of winemaking, but during the summers they worked in the family business, first helping
the workers, and later in the office. The two brothers earned their degrees and finally decided to work full time with
their father. Gerardo entered the company in ‘74, when he had finished his studies in economics and accounting and
Giorgio entered in ‘76, having concluded his studies in chemistry. Then something new happened again.

ornuda, whose territory is largely made up of hills, spreads out on the right bank of the Piave River, in
the heart of the March, was the first historical headquarters of the company established by Pietro Serena.
In 1848, a few decades before establishment of the company, Cornuda had been the scene of an epic
moment in Italian history: the Hapsburg troops had defeated the troops of the Vatican State on the
battlefield in Cornuda. Luciano Serena successively established a distillery on this land for the production of grappa. At
the third generation, in 1967, when the battles of the Italian unification were only a matter of history taught at school,
Adolfo Serena moved the company offices to Susegana. Until the Sixties, the Serena brothers had never felt the need to
undertake different roads or diversify their business, but with the economic boom, new scenarios were being taken into
consideration by Lino, Adolfo and Corrado, with ideas that would soon lead to change. In fact, Corrado established a
business of his own in Montebelluna, which was later carried on by his son; today that company goes by the name of
Montelvini. The other two brothers, on the other hand, conducted their business together for a few years, until Adolfo
decided to take a big step on his own, opening the new headquarters in Susegana, which had a small bottling plant that

erardo e Giorgio avevano continuato
birrerie, pizzerie, paninoteche e pub. Questi luoghi
tenore. Il primo impianto di infustamento Serena
ha oggi il sapore dell’archeologia industriale:
produceva solo quaranta fusti l’ora. Negli anni
Novanta Gerardo e Giorgio Serena vanno diritti
“gioiello” capaci di produrre 400 fusti all’ora, 3500
al giorno, 800.000 all’anno.

THE SERENA STORY. SINCE 1881.
G
erardo and Giorgio obviously continued
conducting the family business with
commitment; this was the period when
bottled wines were sold. At a certain
point, they understood that there was really a need for
something new in the wine market, in order to adapt to
the social changes underway: restoration was increasingly
becoming collective and, accompanied by rock music,
new places of aggregation were being created around
food, such as beer houses, pizzerias, sandwich shops and
pubs. These places became very popular in the variegated
urban and rural realities, changing the traditional manner
of consuming food forever. Gerardo and Giorgio were
attentive to this evolution and were also urged by their
most sensitive customers to identify several hypotheses
for innovation, one of which ended up marking the
company’s destiny: wine in drums – namely, a way to
package wine that seemed to respond perfectly to the
needs of new restoration and catering systems. It was
1987, the year of the turning point for Vinicola Serena.
In order to understand the importance of this choice,
just consider that one of the greatest dangers for the
quality of wine, especially when served to great numbers
of people, is oxidation. For the first time, the drum
produced by the Serena family permitted the user to have
a product that remained intact for a longer period of

time, which was easy to move and ideal for consumption
in large volumes. Serena’s first drum filling plant has an
air of industrial archaeology today: it produced only forty
drums per hour. In the Nineties, Gerardo and Giorgio
Serena went straight to the heart of the problem and
employed all of their resources, soon becoming the most
important company in this sector, improving technology,
enhancing production with the inclusion of new plants
and attracting increasing numbers of customers with a
proposal of quality, becoming the undisputed national
leader in the sector of drum wines, within the space of
a few years. At the end of the last millennium, in order
to deal with the need for change, the idea of a new,
definitive move took shape. This time the destination
was Conegliano, the homeland of Prosecco, where the
Serena works were inaugurated in 2003, in an area of
35,000 m2, 18,000 of which are covered. The storage
capacity is 50,000 hectolitres and the facility is equipped
with plants that are the “jewels” of the industry, with a
productive capacity of 400 drums per hour, 3500 per day
and 800,000 drums per year.

e Sandro Comini, rispettivamente Ad e Direttore Creativo
e all’attenzione posta in ogni attività di comunicazione:
Serena, Vigne Venete, Terra Serena, Ville d’Arfanta, De
a venire.
“The work carried out by the Serena brothers” Carlo dal Bo
and Sandro Comini, respectively Managing Director and
Creative Director of the Unidea Communications agency
of Udine say “is the result of a business relationship that
began back in 1989”.
“Even before looking at communication strategies, we
began by restyling the brand logo which at the time
was represented by an old mask, together with the
bottle packaging, in order to arrive at the now famous
advertising campaigns.”
“Continuous growth” dal Bo emphasizes “has contributed
over the years in affirming not only the company image
but also the product lines themselves, particularly the cask
line, which is the core business of the Venetian winery, in
the Serena and Vigne Venete brands.”
“A highly memorable and attentional style that has
created a winning position for itself, thanks to a focussed
advertising plan in the most important national media
both in that of the target consumer and that of the trade
and on the attention given to each single communication
activity: from the stand for trade fair appointments to the
three-monthly house-organ, from the product catalogue
to television advertising.
“In particular”, Comini points out, “we have taken care of
image coordination between the various brands – Serena,
Vigne Venete, Terra Serena, Ville d’Arfanta and De Vilmont
– whilst maintaining their exclusivity and uniqueness, with
the twofold objective of emphasising the prerogatives of
the different brands whilst at the same time strengthening
recognition of their corporate trade images.”
The relationship between the Serena brothers and the
Unidea agency is a partnership, which is ready to continue
its success in its objective of celebrating the triumph of
important objectives such as this 130th anniversary in the
years to come together and with the same mutual esteem.

UNA STORIA SERENA. DAL 1881.
THE SERENA STORY. SINCE 1881.
maturazione.
happy hour compresi.
The name Prosecco comes from a village of the same name in the area of Trieste,
home of the famous species of vine. Rustic and “vigorous”, it has light brown shoots
with large, bright leaves, which range in colour from green to gold in autumn.
Since 2009 the autochthonous vine has also been called by its ancient name: Glera.
Cultivated for at least two centuries, it lives in this part of Italy, between the PreAlpine mountains, the Karst Plateau and the sea. This area is its ideal ecosystem,
which is ensured by the right chemistry of the soil, a mild and favourable climate,
with marked thermal excursions, which are present only during the final period
of ripening. Prosecco has had additional interesting development in Casa Serena
in recent years, thanks to modern customs and taste, which have led to its use in
aperitifs and “happy hour” consumption.

Negli anni ‘90 - siamo

n 130 years of intense activity, Vinicola Serena
has constantly adjusted its productive standards
to respond in real time to a market in constant
expansion and development. Although market
volumes have increased considerably, the Serenas have
never lost the enthusiasm that has encouraged them
to continue aspiring to create a product of avowed
quality. Alongside the scrupulous and constant work of
verification of the raw material, there is respect for the
natural characteristics and genuinity of good drinking,
which has become a precious technical guide in the
choice of the productive processes applied in the phases
of clarification, filtering, decanting and refrigeration.
The great strength that the Serena family has impressed
on the company consists precisely of the quality of
production, innovation and a great capability to respond
to market trends. Thus, after over a century of business,
through their trademarks, Serena is now able to act as
an ambassador in the world of the best wines from
the Conegliano and Treviso March hills and from the
Veneto. The first logo created was obviously the Serena
trademark, which has always distinguished the line of
wine in drums, from the outset. In the Nineties, when
the company was still in Susegana, the Vigne Venete trademark was created,
which was later transformed into Vigne Verdi. This trademark proposes a
second line of drum wines as well as a new line of bottled wines. Susegana
once again gave birth, in 1998, to Terra Serena, the trademark that wed the
labels of the company’s most successful bottled wines. In 2000 Gerardo and
Giorgio made a new investment in the City of Tarzo, with the acquisition
of Ville D’Arfanta, which was to become an
independent trademark for precious typical and
niche productions. Finally, in 2005, bubbles from
beyond the Alps arrived, with the full acquisition
of a “maison de champagne” and affirmation of
the relative trademark, Champagne De Vilmont.
Gerardo and Giorgio continue the great
entrepreneurial adventure of the Serenas today,
assisted by their children Luca and Chiara and
a numerous and highly professional staff.
Luca entered the company in 2004 after his
studies in economics. He deals with foreign
markets today, while Chiara, with her

Vigne Verdi and Corti delle Calli wines.
These trademarks enclose not only the
virtues of wines from the Conegliano hills,
the Treviso March and the Veneto, but also the most
advanced technologies to serve the hotel, restaurant
and catering channels. Vigne Verdi and Corte delle Calli
wines have the advantage of directly processing quality
raw material, grown in an area where the particular
microclimate ensures conservation of the best traits
of the grapes, which is a necessary condition for the
successive vinification of excellent wines. The Vigne
Verdi steel drum exploits the method of tapping to the
best advantage, guaranteeing quality, quantity and the
continuity of service at the bar. This particular type of
distribution, in addition to making the phases of service
more functional and faster, considerably facilitates
storage in the warehouse, thanks to the practical manner
of stacking the drums. The complex cycle of processing
(analytical verification, clarification, filtering, stabilisation,
sterile conditioning of the drums) is designed to ensure
perfect conservation of the quality of the wine inside the
drums and the entire process is monitored at the works
in Conegliano Veneto by a computerised system, which
is capable of controlling every aspect. While the line of
Serena drum wines continues to be the core business
of the company, Vigne Verdi proposes a range of 15
different types of wines, available in both drums and
bottles. With Vigne Verdi the company is able to respond
to the most disparate requests from restaurants and
consumers alike. The elegant decanters, traditional flutes
and adhesive labels to place on the taps are a further
guarantee of service to customers. Additionally, thanks
to the proposal of bottled wines in the standard Corte
delle Calli and Vigne Verdi formats, the wide choice of
whites, reds and rosé wines is ideal for the entire sector

prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG dall’inconfondibile etichetta color
Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio,

verall, the Serena works in Conegliano Veneto responds to the
various market requirements with a number of items. It should be
noted that the production in drums, which is the core business
of the company, has grown constantly since the Nineties of
the last century. Nevertheless, Gerardo and Giorgio have always followed
their dream, which became possible thanks to the new works in Conegliano:
specialising in spumanti wines and enriching their exclusive line of
bottled wines with a new trademark called Terra Serena. This formidable
proposal of quality and technology, articulated in an important range of
spumantis and completed by traditional whites and reds, possessed the
unmistakeable taste, bouquet and delicacy that true connoisseurs ask
of great wines. Lively and fresh, with great personality, Terra Serena
sparkling wines interpret emerging trends today, even of younger
consumers, with Prosecco as the undisputed protagonist. The
selection includes Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG,
with its unmistakeable orange and black label, which is now an
international icon, the Prosecco DOC Treviso and sparkling
wines like Rabosello rosé and Raboso Veneto IGT. On the front
of the most traditional bouquets, the selection is completed by
Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon for
the whites, Cabernet, Merlot and Refosco for the reds, all
of which are Typical Geographical Indications (IGT) from
the Veneto. The quality of Terra Serena will undoubtedly
remain the “queen” of Casa Serena for a long time to

l’acquisizione dell’azienda agricola “Ville D’Arfanta” a Tarzo,
storico e misterioso ci
riconduce alla sua origine. Il
nome, infatti, pare derivare
dagli antichi sacerdoti che
custodivano il segreto dei
misteri eleusini, gli Ierofanti.
Al mito si unisce il coro
della
storia,
costituito
dall’avvicendarsi di popoli
dal secondo millennio a.C.,
epoca a cui risalgono le
prime tracce dei Vigneti,
a cui seguirono i Romani,
i Longobardi e i Franchi.
Cabernet DOC, Prosecco DOCG, Prosecco cuvée DOC Treviso spumante e,
ultimo arrivato, Prosecco brut millesimato DOCG.
Solo i grappoli migliori, infatti, vengono
portati a maturazione, così
da ottenere vini e distillati
impeccabili
nelle
note
profumate e nelle trame
del gusto. In particolare, si
esegue la spremitura soffice,
specialmente indicata per le
uve bianche di cui preserva
tutte le qualità migliori.
La maturazione avviene in
sale immerse nella pace e
nell’oscurità, a cui accede
solo la perizia dei qualificati
enologi,
per
verificare
le caratteristiche organolettiche e le condizioni climatiche. Se i Serena

he love for wine, like the love for the
vineyards that criss-cross the sweetly rolling
hills, demands new horizons and passions.
Thus, the purchase of the “Ville d’Arfanta”
farm in Tarzo, which again is in the Treviso March, has
given rise to a new point of view relative to the essence
and production of Serena quality. The district is famous
for the many Venetan Villas dispersed throughout the
territory. Ville d’Arfanta is no less distinguished. This
denomination has a mysterious historical taste that leads
back to its origin. The name, in fact is derived from the
ancient priests who guarded the secret of the Eleusinian
Mysteries, the hierophants. Myth is united with the choir
of history, consisting of the shifting populations starting
from the second millennium B.C., the age from which the
first traces of vineyards date, followed by the Romans, the
Lombards and the Franks. In 1769 these lands became
part of the Republic of the Serenissima and shared her
destiny under the yoke of Austria and, successively,
under the newborn Italian state. The account continues
to the present under Casa Serena: what is better than
accompanying this story with a special glass of wine,
like the one offered by Ville d’Arfanta? The company,
which includes two farmhouses and about five hectares
of vineyards, has given its name to four wines: Cabernet
DOC, Prosecco DOCG, Prosecco cuvee DOC Treviso
Spumante and, the latest arrival, Prosecco brut millesimato
DOCG. Friends and customers are invited to the estate to
taste the products and even to stay the night, if they want.
It must be remembered that Ville d’Arfanta is located in a
privileged position, resting among the sweet declivities of

the rolling green hills, nestled in a hollow that enjoys the
sun from sunrise to sunset, protected from the northern
winds, in a position that enjoys a special microclimate.
Only the best bunches of grapes are allowed to mature,
in order to obtain impeccable wines and distilled
products, in the notes of perfume and the weave of the
taste. In particular, a soft pressing is performed, which
is especially indicated for white grapes, whose best
qualities are preserved. Maturation takes place in rooms
immersed in peace and darkness, where only qualified
oenologists have access, to verify the organoleptic traits
and climatic conditions. The Serenas look after the Ville
d’Arfanta vineyards with love, throughout the four
seasons, because the destiny of a great industrial name in
wine requires places of meditation to deal with the daily
challenges of international markets. That’s why, from one
meditation to another, while the Conegliano works turn
out their products at full capacity, Gerardo and Giorgio
Serena arrived in Rilly La Montagne in 2005, in the land
of champagne.

con gli squadroni nemici. A questo personaggio
leggendario, ghigliottinato durante il terrore, si
intitolò così questo champagne. Lo chateau sorge a

rançois-Alphonse-Donatien De Vilmont, marquis of San Crevès, was an aristocratic Frenchman
during the reign of the House of Bourbon, who became a famous officer of the cavalry guard
of Louis XVI and the revolutionary army. The story is told that in Valmy, on the night after the
battle against the Austro-Prussian army, the nobleman De Vilmont took his sabre to the bottles of
champagne to uncork them, as he had also done with squadrons of enemies. This champagne therefore bears
the name of this legendary personality, who was beheaded at the guillotine during the reign of terror. The chateau
stands in Rilly La Montagne, a few kilometres from the renowned Reims, in the heart of the AOC area, where
vines enjoy the best conditions to give life to rare and unreplicable masterpieces like champagne De Vilmont. The
estate consists of a large “maison d’habitation bourgeoise” dating from the end of the Nineteenth century, the time
of Napoleon III, which has been transformed today into a charming, top class hotel and restaurant. The entrance
to the prestigious wine cellar dating from gothic times, on the other hand is situated on the southern side of the
estate. It is built underground on several levels, for a total of about 3500 m2. In the cellars under the chateau, which
have been excavated from gypsum, the De Vilmont
champagne matures its traits, especially its unmistakeable
perlage. Winding through a good four levels to a depth
of 47 metres, the cellars have a constant temperature
of 10°C, with a humidity of 80%. Inside, the chef de
cave perpetuates the ritual to control the riddling of the
bottles on the special stands, which guarantees the purity
and value of the cuvee.

veramente svolto all’insegna del Prosecco.
Prosecco su tutti i mercati.
paesi Extra Unione Europea.

E
very year, Casa Serena attends special events such as sector trade fairs. These are important
missions for the company, starting from Vinitaly in Verona, which is one of Italy’s true windows
to the world. We can say that the 2010 Vinitaly was truly conducted under the sign of Prosecco.
In fact, precisely on the first day of the trade fair, in the presence of Italian Minister Luca Zaia,
the first bottle of Prosecco Spumante Superiore di Conegliano and Valdobbdiadene DOCG was uncorked
and the new denomination was introduced to the entire world. The following day, the new Consortium for
the Protection of Prosecco DOC was introduced, which is already configured as one of the most important
consortiums in Italy, whose purpose, in collaboration with the DOCG consortium, is to protect, guarantee and
promote Prosecco on markets throughout the world. At Casa Serena, during Vinitaly, we obviously toasted
together to our historical customers and to new contacts with businesses from countries outside the European
Union. The presence of Casa Serena brands is not felt only in Verona, in any case; for several years now, in
fact, it has been a custom of the company to participate at the Prowein of Düsseldorf and to be present at
various events on European and international markets.

t’s really not just a bad habit to climb onto the podium every time, but a veritable family spirit, which has been
