Il saluto del Presidente Onorario
L’apparenza inganna
Quando nella primavera dello scorso anno la crisi economica dell’International Cricket Council ha
causato la cancellazione della World Cup Qualifying Series, e conseguentemente del torneo che si
sarebbe dovuto giocare in Italia, le premesse per la stagione 2003 sembravano tutt’altro che
rosee.
Invece, fra la sorpresa generale e per la gioia di tutti, abbiamo vissuto nel 2003 una stagione
nostrana bella ed emozionante come mai era accaduto in precedenza. Gallicano e Pianoro hanno
onorato un Campionato realmente nazionale, nella formula e nella durata, con un duello che
resterà negli annali come il primo, speriamo, di molti.
La Coppa Italia, allargata anche ai giovani italiani del domani, ha fornito una serie d’incontri
esaltanti, comprese una semifinale e la finale risolte all’ultimo lancio. I tornei giovanili, infine,
sono stati avvincenti come non mai.
Tutto questo è dunque il cricket italiano oggi. Una realtà sempre più matura e consapevole che è
la punta di diamante della integrazione sociale e culturale nel nostro paese, con l’aggiunta dell’impareggiabile arricchimento offerto dai nostri concittadini all’estero che finalmente giocando
in Nazionale a pieno diritto possono sentirsi italiani a tutti gli effetti.
Credo ci sia da esserne fieri e che dobbiamo ringraziare Simone Gambino per la lucidità e la perseveranza con le quali ha saputo perseguire questi obiettivi.
EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING – The cancellation last Spring of the World Cup
Qualifying Series, including the division scheduled to be played in Italy, following the
International Cricket Council’s financial shortfall, did not bid well for the 2003 season.
Instead, to everyone’s surprise and delight, we witnessed in 2003 the most enthralling and exciting domestic season in our brief history with Gallicano and Pianoro honouring a truly National
Championship, both in format and duration, with a head-to-head duel that one can only hope to
have been the first of many to come.
The Italian Cup, now open also to the young Italians-to-be, produced a series of nerve racking
matches, including a semifinal and the final going to the final ball. Last but not least, the youth
tournaments were the best ever.
All this is Italian cricket at present. A dynamic and aware reality that is a shining example of
cultural and social integration, furthermore enriched by our fellow citizens abroad, finally fully
eligible to play for Italy.
I believe we can feel proud of all this and that we should thank Simone Gambino for the vision
and persevearance with which he pursued these goals.

R
omano è stato il principale
artefice dell’entrata del cricket
nel Comitato Olimpico
Nazionale Italiano, avendo seguito il
nostro sport fin dal lontano 1990
quando partecipò, primo dirigente
CONI, ad un convegno celebrativo per
il decennale della Associazione
Italiana Cricket. Capace di ricondurre
con pacatezza alla logica e
al ragionamento qualunque discussione, anche la
più concitata, Romano ha
segnato uno stile dirigenziale che si può solo sperare resti d’esempio
nello sport italiano.
Dal confronto con lui
negli anni è emerso
quello che oggi è il
più grande ostacolo
alla crescita del cricket in Italia: la mancanza di una adeguata preparazione culturale specifica da
parte degli addetti ai
lavori. Era inevitabile
che nel corso della evoluzione dello sport si
ponesse questo problema. Il percorso compiuto
in questo quarto di secolo, vorticoso ancor più
che rapido, si è concentrato giocoforza sui fenomeni visibili a scapito dell’essenza impercettibile
del gioco: quello spirito tanto impalpabile quanto
imprescindibile per chi il cricket lo voglia comprendere veramente appieno.
In Italia finora si erano identificati due obiettivi
generici, i giovani e le strutture, ed intorno a questi nell’ultimo quinquennio si era cercato di basare la politica federale. Il Progetto Promozione
Sviluppo (PPS) ha portato la Federazione ad
affacciarsi nell’immenso ed articolato mondo
della scuola. Oggi come oggi, perfino l’esempio del topolino e della
montagna appare lusinghiero per il
cricket italiano in questo confronto.
Tuttavia, una volta partiti, bisognerà attrezzarsi non solo perché il PPS
prosegua ma anche
perché i giovani
giocatori da esso
prodotti nelle scuole trovino dove
continuare a giocare al termine degli
studi.
Questo porta inevitabilmente a parlare delle ASA, entità
che in pochi anni si
sono dovute trasformare da semplici squadre in qualcosa di molto più

diversificate. Le scuole cricket previste dal PPS,
in tal senso, appaiono come una scelta necessaria, se si vuole effettivamente dare stabilità nel
tempo, assicurando al contempo entrate diversificate. In ultima analisi, necessita che i pionieri
accolgano i neofiti che, avvicinandosi al gioco per
la prima volta, ne favoriranno la crescita. Non
avranno costoro, inizialmente, conoscenza alcuna
dello spirito del cricket, anzi si andranno a scontrare con esso, ma col tempo lo assimileranno e,
al contempo arricchiranno il movimento con la

per trarre nuovi spunti su cui lavorare nelle successive. Ma l’esperienza “totalizzante”di Hobart è
stata rappresentata anche dalla possibilità di confrontarmi con la lingua e la vita sociale del luogo,
nonché di svolgere un’attività lavorativa che mi
consentisse di mantenermi e di entrare in immediato contatto con la mentalità tasmaniana. Non
meno significative, infine, sono state la visita a
Cricket Australia a Melbourne e l’incontro con la
Nazionale indiana nei nets a Bellerive Oval al termine del match contro l’Australia A. A conclusione
di questo breve viaggio nei ricordi il mio saluto va
a Luca Moretti e Francesco Pampallona, compagni
di un’avventura entusiasmante.

Director Peter Di Venuto, in the afternoon specific coaching, conducted by Glenn Hughes,
brother of former Australian skipper Kim, consisted of indoor nets with bowling machines
alternated with the Glenorchy Cricket Club
practice sessions. Week-ends were made up of
games in the Hobart league where one could
test the results of the hard work put in the during the preceding week, understanding at the
same time which aspects of the game demanded more application in the following one.
However, the real bonus of the Hobart experience was learning a foreign language while
experiencing the Tasmanian way of life, mixing
with the locals and working in order to ensure

and meeting the Indian team in the nets at the

for Bologna Web Italia, at Grosseto, and
Gallicano Monti Prenestini, opposed to Murri,
while Capannelle and Pianoro Tecnessenze won
close games against Roma Locanda Cairoli and
Trentino respectively.
The semi-final between Capannelle and Gallicano
is one for the record books with the team from
the Prenestine Mountains going through by virtue of losing less wickets with the scores level,
thanks to a superb last over by Ivan Sarnelli who
denied the team from the hippodrome the 3 runs
needed for victory. In the other semi-final, it was
Bologna’s turn, for once, to walk over Pianoro.
The best ever final in the Italian Cup’s history
saw Bologna beat Gallicano by 5 runs at the end
of a match that went to the last ball. Web Italia
owed its victory entirely to its “40 Club”: Akhalq
Qureshi, excelled as usual with bat and ball,
Patrick Leech, bowled miserly
at the death, and, last but not
least, Mauro Guaragna produced a decisive last wicket stand
with Claudio Fabbri that put

divise in 4 gironi.
Mentre Euratom al nord,
Pianoro al centro e Murri
nell’insulare passavano
imbattute, nel girone laziale Capannelle e Gallicano
davano vita ad uno scontro
avvincente che vedeva i
campioni uscenti prevalere
solo dopo uno spareggio.
La poule finale
non era da
meno con il
Pianoro che
batteva la
Murri e
l’Euratom, il
Capannelle.
Dopo che i
romani piegavano gli etnei, la vittoria collinare sui lombardi
sembrava assegnare il titolo. A sorpresa, però,
la Murri sconfiggeva l’Euratom rendendo decisiva la vittoria del Capannelle sul Pianoro per
la riconferma dello scudetto agli ippodromici.
Anche l’Euratom bissava il titolo under 13 vinto
nel 2002. Il torneo vedeva il Gallicano prevalere nel girone capitolino su Capannelle e Smit
mentre i lombardi regolavano Pianoro e
Maremma nell’altra poule. Le semifinali vedevano facili vittorie per i padroni di casa sui felsinei e per l’Euratom sul Capannelle con i varesotti che prevalevano in finale sui comunque
meritevoli locali.

The final was just as
exciting with
Pianoro beating
Murri and Euratom,

After the Romans
beat the Sicilians,
the home team’s
win over the Lombards looked to have decided
the outcome. Surprisingly, then, Murri beat
Euratom making Capannelle’s victory over
Pianoro decisive to allow the team from the
hippodrome to retain the title.
Also Euratom confirmed its 2002 under 13
supremacy.
The tournament saw Gallicano win the Roman
round robin beating Capannelle and Smit
whilst the Lombards disposed of Pianoro and
