It is along the Canal Grande, the most prestigious waterway of Venice, that the traditional boats, that have made the history of the lagoon city, will parade. Boats carved and T FOCUS ON The rite of the ‘Regata Storica’ - Historical Regatta - will take place also this year recalling the splendours of the Serenissima Republic on the one side and the most outstanding rowing race of Venice on the other. THE NAME’S ORIGIN The term ‘regata’ has a difficult derivation. Certain historians and experts of Venetian traditions trace it back to the Latin words ‘auriga, aurigare’ from which the word ‘gara’ – race – derives. Others trace it back to the term ‘remicata’ deriving from ‘remus’ or from (ramigium). Yet, it could also derive from (riga) – line –, i.e. the way the boats are arranged at the start. Anyway, the Venetian term ‘regata’ is used in all the main European languages to refer to a boat competition. FOCUS ON The great show decorated with gold and velvets and hundreds of Venetians in marvellous brocade costumes. The characteristic Bucintoro, the official boat of the Serenissima, heads and opens the Regata Storica, the most beautiful and outstanding of Venetian festivities that has been taking place almost unchanged for over six hundred years. The colourful procession on the water recalls the triumphal way with which in 1489 Caterina Cornaro was received who, after the death of his husband the King of Cyprus, renounced to the throne in favour of Venice. It is the most spectacular, picturesque and enthralling moment of the life in the lagoon which is able to enchant tourists as well as to capture and thrill locals. For the latter ones the regatta is above all a boat race which sees the participation of men and women who are well accustomed to oars, who know, love and respect the sea and who uphold a tradition lost in the mists of time. The first fragmentary evidence about this spectacular race dates back to the second half of the XIII century but, in all probability, it was a customary popular competition already at that time. Indeed, Venice invested very much in the sea and saw the training of oarsmen as a vital necessity. On the occasion of the regatta, the St. Mark’s basin and the Canal Grande become literally crowded with boats of all types from which citizens follow the competition with partisan animosity. There are various races. The first one is the youngsters’ race on the two-oared ‘pupparini’ – very technical boats truly challenging their ability –, followed by the women’s race on © Apt the ‘mascarete’ – whose stern resembles a mask –, and it is then the turn of the men’s race on heavy six-oared ‘caorline’ – river transportation boats nowadays almost out of use. However, the climax of the Regata Storica is the oarchampion’s race on two-oared ‘gondolini’, light boats shaped as very slim gondolas, showing off the rowers’ technical abilities more than their strength. Venetians cheer enthusiastically. The ‘Canalasso’ – as Venetians call the Canal Grande – becomes alive and the public waits impatiently for the first boat, that left from Riva degli Schiavoni, to arrive at Punta della Salute. Since that is usually the boat which at the end of the race wins the first place. Then the boats weave back through the Canalasso as far as the railway station where they change direction mascarete (la cui prua ricorda vagamente una bautta) e da quella maschile sulle pesanti caorline, imbarcazioni da trasporto fluviale ormai in disuso. Le barche quindi risalgono il "Canalasso" davanti alla Stazione dei treni per girare il paletto e tornare all’arrivo posto all’altezza di and head towards the finishing post in front of Ca’ Foscari, where the ‘machina’ has been built for the occasion, a floating stage for the authorities. It is here that prizes are awarded: red flag for the first place, the following three are the white, green and blue flags, trophies that replace the medals. There were also in kind awards until a few years ago, such as a little living pig which would have been paraded on a gondola of its own in the historical procession. It’s passing along the numerous spectators was like a thermometer of the Venetians reactions to the city government. When it wasn’t satisfying, the pig would have been acclaimed with whistles and screams such as “here’s the mayor, long live the mayor”. However, this ceremony has been abolished after protests of animal rights supporters. THE MASTERS OF THE OAR 1 2 1. Pantaleone. On it, like in a 8. Gloria Rogliani, oar-winner court, there were always three Race Judges for the prize awar- 4 ding. The stage had each time a different shape, like of a garden or of a tower and was always characterised by marvellous decorations. Four flags, destined to the first four racers (red, green, blue and yellow), were arranged on the stage. In former times, a bag, with the money corresponding to the arrival prize, hanged from each flag. The investigation into the singleness of man and into the particular has become the mission of his life: everything is autobiographic and a portrait. Ninety works (paintings and etchings) by the eighty-two-yearold painter – born in Berlin but who is British citizen since 1939 – borrowed from European and American collections, including the famous portrait of the Queen of England. Lucian – nephew of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis – is endowed with an almost “inborn” ability of psychological introspection. His paintings investigate all the possible expressions of painting immortalizing the flowing of life as it really is, without allowances, with realism. E 1 Islands in the island. The Cube Gallery differs from the former in its dedication for the most part to artists emerging from the Venetian scene both local and international. Its intention is to restore the relationship between young artists and private galleries, who have in the last few years given preference to established artists, with few exceptions. The aim of the gallery is also to be space of convergence and comparison between these artists who in the past have had difficulty in finding spaces in which to gather and exhibit, which meant they leaned towards a sometimes unproductive individualism. The church built in the 14th. Century and rebuilt or largely converted in the 15th. Century was dedicated to St. Christopher, patron saint of ferrymen, pilgrims, travellers and merchants. However quite soon it took the popular and present name in honour of the image of the Virgin with Child, believed miraculous, a sculpture placed in the garden (orto) by the sculptor Giovanni De Santi. The statue was said to perform miracles. The magnificent façade in brickwork is one of the most interesting in Venice, a testimony of the transition from Romanesque style to gothic and from gothic to renaissance. The entire Basilica with three naves is very luminous, and holds works of art of extreme value, in particular some of the fundamental works of “Tintoretto”, who lived nearby, (3399 Fondamenta dei mori), and who was buried in this church, together with his son Domenico, his daughter Marietta. After an interruption during the war, the Festival resumed in 1946 with screenings at the San Marco Cinema. In 1949, international cinema returned to the Lido Cinema building to stay, making it the focal point for international society events in the fifties and sixties when it welcomed the top names in world-class cinematography. There was to be no Festival from 1969 to 1979 and the Festival was made non-competitive. And it was in this period that the intellectuals arrived. Fellini returned to pick up his career achievement award in 1985. The ingredients to make the 62. Venice Film Festival a successful exhibition are all there. Moreover, numerous stars will be crowding a stage illuminated by flashlights: from Russel Crowe to George Clooney (in a “director-actor edition”), to Ralph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Monica Bellucci, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon and the “Soprano” James Gandolfini. And many other Hollywood stars have confirmed their presence. The Film Festival is an arena of high-level cinema and audience, a compromise between the critics and the box-office. It is the most awaited event of a hot summery Venice crowded with tourists. The Festival – starting on 31st August and ending on 10th September – will light up on the gala night, on 3rd September, with Lasse Hallstrom’s “Casanova” (see pictures), the most awaited film that will guide the retrospective “Secret history of Italian cinema” with a film on the Venetian character of Casanova. FONDAM he Venice Lido’s development began in around 1850 with the construction of the first seaside resorts, and culminated in the late ’30s. In that period commissions to build summer villas rained down on architects from all over the world, but mainly from Venice. Their customers’ wealth and the almost absolute freedom to design in a semideserted area allowed to do experiments at the Lido using a style called “art nouveau”, which in Italy would be called “Liberty”. Our tour could begin with Monplaisir Villa in Gran Viale, often defined as one of the most significant art nouveau buildings in Italy. And then on to via Lepanto’s Hotel Villa Otello and the splendid Romanelli Villa. The details are left to the attentive eyes of the most observant visitors, but the Hotel Des Bains and the Hotel Excelsior cannot be overlooked, just to mention a few examples. The Venetian architects Raffaello and Francesco Marsich designed and built the Hotel Des Bains, inaugurated on 5 July 1900. In the evening of 21 July 1908 people were celebrating the opening of the Hotel Excelsior. A Venezia dal 5 Settembre il primo appuntamento italiano con le calzature storiche del marchio bolognese. runo Magli, soon to be 70 yearsold, is unvailing its historic shoe collection in Italy for the first time in its history. Sets of fifteen models, selected from the historic archives of the maison founded in 1936, will play leading roles in bringing the style, elegance, and contemporary appeal of the brand to a wide and diverse audience. The backdrop for this special event will be the Bruno Magli boutiques in leading Italian cities, including Venice from 5 to 15 September, Rome and Bologna from 19 to 29 September, Palermo and Turin from 3 to 13 October. The Bruno Magli Museum Project has entered its main phase after the year-long work of retrieving and cataloguing the nearly 300 models, designed between the 1950s and today. The original exhibition opened in Milan in February as part of the “Uniqueness” event, during Women’s Fashion Week. After the Milanese preview, the Bruno Magli collections went on the road in shows still touring through Japan and the United States. A mounting interest the brand will lead the Museum Project to several European countries in November. As a part of the Museum Project and in conjunction with the Shoe Museum of Vigevano in Italy, from 18 to 21 October in Moscow Historical Museum severals of Bruno Magli’s landmark models will be displayed in the show "Women and Italian shoes, a century-long love affair”, footwear from 1890 to 1990. The process of exploring the Bruno Magli Archive lead to the development of the museum project and a celebrated limited edition Art Book. The hand made one of a kind book will be available for display during each showing. Further enhancing the project are restyled models inspired by the historic work in the Fall Winter 2005 and Spring Summer 2006 collections. B SWATCH STORE Mercerie - San Marco, 4947 map: F5 - ph. Apostoli, 4624 DINING guide A cosy and welcoming atmosphere, an elegant environment, a highlevel menu and a prestigious cellar in a place rich in history and tradition. Those are just some of the ingredients which make “A la vecia Cavana” one of the most famous and well-known restaurants in Venice. It was built on an ancient boathouse - or ‘cavana’ in Italian. The brothers Massimiliano, Gianfranco and Giuseppe Garbin, known in the city for their decennial experience - they are also owners of the two renowned ‘osterias’ Alla Patatina and Antica osteria al Pantalon - have created an elegant welcoming restaurant offering high-quality products. The refreshing ‘Pesce al crudo’ - particular dish made of raw fish - and home-made pasta are the chef’s, Stefano Barbon, specialities, who also creates desserts and decorates dishes with fresh seasonal products. L’atmosfera calda, accogliente. Dress the rice with fresh ground pepper. Prepare some rice quenelle, place the fillet slices on the rice, coat with a thin layer of sauce and decorate with horseradish, olive pâté and parsley. DINING guide ne single leaf of raw sage contains 500 aromatic compounds. This makes clear that the chemical reactions of the savours obtained in cuisine will never be able to measure up neither to the natural world of savours, nor to the direct and healthy assimilation of nature. Therefore, the ingestion of raw food goes beyond the old definitions of savour – palatable or unpalatable – thus involving all our senses. Anyone who decides to try a raw diet will start using different nerve terminals, thus rediscovering long dormant feelings. Tastes, savours, colours, aromas and scents: everything appears different, almost new. Raw food is thus a rediscovery, a sort of leap back into man’s primitive past. Fresh and raw food certainly is a mine of sensations and it has to be offered only fresh to avoid a toxinfection. Marco, 1459 The “shade” of Venice L’ombra di Venezia VENEZIA NIO.adv exclusive of BECCARELLO via Villabona n.87 - Venice - Italy ph. +39.041.920400 - fax +39.041.931636 www.beccarello.it - [email protected] Legend has it that once, in Piazza San Marco, there was a wine banquet that during the summer moved after the shade of the bell’s tower. Each of the glasses sold could not contain less than 100ml. This is the origin of the name “ombra” under which all Venetians call even today a glass of wine. A tradition reflecting the nature and the scent of this marvellous and unique city. Today, in the Doges’ city 50,000 ‘ombre’ are drunk everyday. A substantial figure for a city of no more than 75,000 inhabitants. L’ombra di Venezia is a homage to the long-standing Venetian tradition. In front of a glass of wine new friendships are formed and old ones are reinforced, deals are clinched and communicating becomes easier. Venice, its nature, history, the character of its inhabitants are centred on this rite. L’ombra di Venezia enshrines all these characteristics. The Pinot Grigio, preserved here, is 100% Venetian because is produced, in limited quantity, with a true Venetian passion in the same earth that provided wine for the Palazzo Ducale centuries ago. Its essence is characterized by the scents of Italy. Its colour is the result of the sun that has ripened the grapes. Thanks to this extraordinary wine, you can breath the cordiality and friendship which can still be found today on the shades of the Campanile. With L’ombra di Venezia you can savour the true Venetian tastes, experience the atmosphere, history and tradition of an almost imaginary city. Holding your own bottle of wine and drinking it from your own glasses means possessing a tiny part of that wonder. Indeed, bottles and glasses are created by a famous master glassmaker of Murano. Unique and matchless pieces produced in a limited edition of 999 samples each different from one another. The glass The bottle of “L’ombra di Venezia”, made of Murano glass, has been created with the ancient technique of the mosaic melted at high temperature. The sand has been given its shape and colour by the fire. While the rest, the soul of this type of Murano glass, derives from the technique and experience of the master glassmaker who has created it by blowing on the shapeless amalgam. This particular glass has been therefore created out of that blow, out of the technique enshrined in the inviolable secrets of the furnace. Unique and inimitable. The origin certificate and the ‘murrina’ set in the glass guarantee its quality and originality. The wine The Pinot Grigio “L’ombra di Venezia” is produced in the Italian farm ‘La Vigna del Cason Brusà’ and is the result of an accurate analysis of the “terroir” carried out in cooperation with the ‘Istituto Sperimentale’ of Conegliano. Different clones of Pinot Grigio– from two to five – have been planted in the same vineyard, so as to emphasize their best characteristics. The harvested product, unique in its characteristics, undergoes a treatment which respects both the tradition and the quality of the grapes. A hard and intense process for a unique top quality. “L’ombra di Venezia” – ‘ombra’ meaning glass of wine in the Venetian dialect – reflects the professional ability of the enterprise renowned in Italy and abroad. In the DNA: the light of the Canaletto. In the eyes: the colours of the Mediterranean, the curiosity and the search for the “truth” – characteristics of the positivist –, the passion of a patriot, the strength of a hero. Ippolito Caffi (1809-1966) is a romantic artist and a character endowed with a great charm. He is one of the major and most original artists of the Italian 1800 Vedutist movement. His art takes on a European dimension in a way that is very much close to Corot, and somehow to the contemporary Turner “for the different and at the same time contiguous visionary attitudes” which enabled him to obtain, in his short but intense life, consensus and admiration. guide and the city listing ANTONIO LIGABUE. 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH. From 27 May to 25 September 2005 Ligabue’s anthological exhibition can be described as a journey back to the origins, forty years after his death. But as a matter of fact, he has never been to the mountains of the Veneto region where his mother, Elisabetta Costa, was born. She later emigrated and gave birth to Luciano Ligabue in Switzerland and died only three years later. Perhaps, in those first three years his simple mother – who, like all emigrates, felt a deep longing for home – talked to him about her mountains and sang him the typical singsongs of Agordo – town in the province of Belluno. Bearing in mind the great success achieved with the first exhibition in Cencenighe for the 20th anniversary of his death, the relationship between Ligabue and the people from the mountains can certainly be defined as special. From October 20 to December 18 2005 After the cycle dedicated to the great characters of the fairy tales and stories for children of European origin, the exhibition will start with a long journey around the world discovering stories and fairy tales from other parts of the world. The first stop is the near East with its beautiful tales and legends. “The Arabian Nights” only to cite one of the numerous stories, as it is clear from the title also indicating the 2005 topic – Thousands of stories. The characters of one of the most famous collections of short stories will bring you back in a mythical Baghdad, when it was overflied only by colourful flying carpets. Indeed here, there used to be a place where small and charming fake taffeta beauty spots were produced and sold. These were boastfully displayed by Venetian women on their faces or breasts and in Venetian they were called mosche, or moschete. Besides their typical round shape they could also have the shape of a heart, crescent and star. Beauty spots, just like flowers, had their own, often mischievous, language which strictly depended on where they were placed. Near the mouth, but especially near its corners or close to the underlip they meant voluptuousness (the latter ones were called civette – coquette – or galanti – gallants – and the first ones assassine – killers). On the throat they meant gallantry (this type of moscheta was called galante – gallant), on the nose boldness (the sfrontata – shameless), on the eye-corner passion (i.e. the appassionata – passionate – that was not to be confused with the irresistibile – irresistible – that was always near the eye but a little shifted from it), in the middle of the forehead it meant grandeur (this moscheta was called the maestosa – grand). On a par with the moschete, the fan – be it made of silk, parchment or painted paper – has been for decades, perhaps centuries, an accomplice of women’s gallantry – hiding or unveiling glances and spites – and had its own language of encouragement, promise, praise, menace and forgiveness. Keeping a half-open fan on the lips could have meant “kiss me” whereas bringing it close to the heart, telling the beloved the interest you felt for him/her. Un piccolo gioiello ricco di suggestioni. From Friday 2 to Sunday 11 Palio of the Castel D’amore MAINLAND guide T he narrow streets of the old city centre, the sound of the flowing of water and of the small watermills, the osterias and the ancient stones of the city. The scent of the soil and of its products. It won’t take long to understand that Treviso is a magical place. A blending of art, nature and culture imbues its laborious and friendly people. A small jewel to the North of Venice - 30 kilometres away -, from which it has “inherited” the cult of beauty. Treviso is characterised by an harmonious combination of 14th century art and rustic osterias, of elegant Venetian villas and modern architectures. It’s worthwhile mentioning also the nature of the Park of Sile, the savours of genuine food with the ‘Strada del Radicchio’ and the taste of good wine with the ‘Strada del Prosecco’. The places to be visited are concentrated within the walls of the city, spaced out by two beautiful gates: ‘Santi Quaranta’ and ‘San Tommaso’. The heart of the city is ‘Piazza dei Signori’ - the main square - where ‘Palazzo dei Trecento’ with its frescoed loggia gives onto. Behind the square, past the palace of ‘Monte di Pietà’ begins a maze of narrow streets and canals forming the romantic part of the city with numerous views on the colonnade of the Buranelli and on the fish shop. Other minute places like piazza Pola, piazza San Vito and piazza Rinaldi recall the structure of the Venice-style ‘campiello’. Whereas the collections of the Museo Civico “L. Bailo” and the periodic exhibitions at ‘Casa dei Carraresi’, ‘Palazzo Giacomelli’ and ‘Palazzo Scotti’ testify to the richness of art in the city. The itinerary, going through the old ‘Road of White Wine’ (‘born’ in 1964, the first one in Italy), stretches through the beautiful hills cultivated with Prosecco wine of Conegliano Valdobbiadene comprising also the quality area of the Conegliano Hills renowned for the production of red and white wine. The itinerary goes through beautiful cities like Conegliano, Vittorio Veneto, Valdobbiadene and Pieve di Soligo as well as Treviso, just a few kilometres away, an authentic architectonic “jewel” and lively cultural centre. Along the ‘Road’ you will find Medieval castles, like the ones of Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto or the San Salvatore castle in Collalto di Susegana. Moreover, aristocratic villas, monuments as well as churches and abbeys. The Cistercian abbey of Follina is certainly the most renowned one, in the Valsana area, where monks founded the buildings they named after Saint Mary. Wine lovers cannot certainly miss these places. The most outstanding bottles of wine bare the name of the towns present in those hills that have a longstanding vocation for the cultivation of vineyards: Refrontolo, Valle del Laterza (Valley of Laterza), Pieve di Soligo, county town of Quartier del Piave and headquarter of the Consorzio di Tutela di prosecco - association safeguarding the Prosecco. And again cities like Valdobbiadene, Follina and Combai. Equilibrium, body and a low acidity: the quintessence of the most famous coffee. It is this month’s recommendation by Caffè del Doge. Since each season has its own aroma and the “Carta dei caffè”, offered by the best restaurants, gives sense to the philosophy inspiring us. Artisan roasting, cold-blending. To many they are only subtle hints, to us they are everything. Tostatura artigianale, miscelazione a freddo.
