Gli aerei con la croce nera
dipinta su ali e fusoliera colpivano Venezia perché risultava strategica base navale
dell’Adriatico essendo dotata
di un avanguardistico idroscalo fuori dell’Arsenale.
Durante il conflitto, con l’oscuramento notturno e l’offensiva intensificata, gli alti
comandi si resero finalmente
conto del pericolo rappresentato dal nuovo mezzo
bellico.

s’alzarono in volo le squadriglie francesi per contrastare
la preponderanza degli
Imperi centrali con 6 aerei

weapon, let alone Venetians.
Since the unusual arrival of
the Austro-Hungarian aircrafts in the lagoon sky on 24
May 1915, they followed the
evolutions in the devices from
roof-top loggias or balconies
pointing out the bombs that
fell to each other, and that
morning they were 19. It was
the first day of war. The airplanes with the black cross
painted on their wings and
fuselage bombed Venice
because it was considered a
strategic naval base of the
Adriatic since it was equipped
with a cutting-edge seaplane
station outside the “Arsenale”. During the conflict,
with night obscuration and an
intensified offensive, high
level commands eventually
realized how dangerous the
new war instrument was.
The navy deployed riflemen
as a response to the raids.
And, in the summer of 1915,
the French squadron took off
with six Nieuport aircrafts to
counter the preponderance of
the central Empires. Since
Autumn 1916, hot-air balloons were positioned in order

Dall’operazione rimasero
fuori la Torre dell’Orologio
e il leone-chimera sulla
colonna del Molo.
Purtroppo, vennero colpiti
in successivi attacchi l’Ospedale Civile, la chiesa dei
SS. Giovanni e Paolo, S.
Maria Formosa, S. Francesco della Vigna, la cupola
di S. Pietro di Castello.
Un ordigno cadde, senza
arrecare danni, davanti alla
Basilica di S. Marco. Per fortuna, la quadriga era al sicuro, la Chiesa ricoperta da
paratie.
L’Assunta del Tiziano, tolta
dai Frari e sistemata in un
sottoscala dell’Accademia di
Belle Arti, fu trasferita a
Cremona.
Fino ad ottobre 1918,
durante 42 incursioni, vennero sganciate oltre 600
bombe tra incendiarie e
dirompenti che causarono
danni al patrimonio artistico ma limitatissimi inconvenienti alle strutture
industrial-militari e poche
vittime.

blasted. The shockwave
destroyed the work of art.
«Given the state of the material gathered, of the minute
fragments, of the whitewash
that flaked off beams and of
other supporting structures,
any work of restoration, even
partial, seems impossible. Yet,
painstaking studies will have
to be carried out». This is
what a technician declared to
the local newspaper Gazzettino on 27 October during
an inspection. The debris was
removed during the ceiling
restoration (the new ceiling
fresco will be carried out by
Ettore Tito).
Where has it been thrown? The
newspapers of the times did not
say it. The same happened to
the Cappella degli Eremitani in
Padua, with frescos by
Mantegna, that was bombed in
1944 and redesigned with the
help of the computer. Its “minute fragments” might be lying
since centuries somewhere. The
extant pieces, displayed at the
Gallerie dell’Accademia, are
waiting to be miraculously reassembled to form what once was
Tiepolo’s masterpiece with the
help of modern technologies.

Mentre si ripara il tetto (il
successivo affresco sul soffitto sarà opera di Ettore Tito)
le macerie vengono rimosse.
Dove sono state gettate? I
giornali dell’epoca non lo
dicono.
Come la Cappella degli
Eremitani a Padova affrescata dal Mantegna, bombardata nel 1944 e recuperata
dopo restauro al computer,
forse i «frantumi minuti»
riposano da oltre un secolo
da qualche parte.
Mentre i pezzi superstiti,
esposti alle Gallerie dell’Accademia, attendono che le
moderne tecnologie possano
miracolosamente ricomporre il capolavoro del Tiepolo.

to create a barrier that would
prevent hostile crafts from
coming closer since, if touched, they risked to fall.
A few months before going to
war, the Sovrintendenza and
the Venice Municipality had
drawn up a list of the monuments and works of art that
were to be protected with
bulkheads, sandbags and
against fires. Experts had to
make a “painful” selection
and favoured the area surrounding
Saint
Mark’s
Square, S. Giorgio, the churches of SS. Giovanni e Paolo,
the Salute and S. Sebastiano.
The Torre dell’Orologio
(clock tower) – and the lionchimaera on the column of the
Molo were left out from the
safeguard operation.
Unfortunately, subsequent
raids hit the Civil Hospital,
the churches of S. Giovanni
and Paolo, S. Maria Formosa,
S. Francesco della Vigna and
the S. Pietro di Castello dome.
A bomb fell in front of the
Saint Mark’s Basil, yet
without causing damages.
Fortunately, the Quadriga
was at that time stored in a
safe place and the church was
covered with bulkheads. The
“Assunta” by Tiziano, withdrawn from the church of the
Frari and then stored in an
area of the Accademia delle
Belle Arti, was transferred to
Cremona. Up to October
1918, 600 were the bombs –
both incendiary and fragmentation ones – dropped during
42 incursions damaging the
artistic heritage yet with few
repercussions on the industrial and military structures
and with few victims.

absolutely adored the painting of the salone Barbaro…I have
seen few other things by S[argent] that I desired to own more”.
It is more or less with those words that Henry James talked
about “An interior in Venice” – painted by Sargent in 1898 – in a letter dated 1899 addressed to the Curtis family who owned Palazzo
Barbaro in Venice (where the writer was hosted during his stays in
Venice) and who are portrayed in the canvas. A fact that documents a
number of interesting coincidences. Like the Curtis’ – who left Boston
in 1877 – also of J.S. Sargent’s parents left America in 1854 to search,
in the Mediterranean climate, a remedy for the bad health conditions
of the mother (Mary N. Singer) as well as more tranquillity, given the
fact that in few years time the war of secession was about to start
(1861-65). John Singer Sargent was born in Florence in 1856 and spent
his childhood in the stirring environments of the most outstanding
European cities. While still very young, he was encouraged to paint by
his mother – well-read woman, fond of arts and literature – and moved
to Paris in 1874 to take part in the atelier of the famous portrayer
Carolus-Duran. Two years later he made Monet’s acquaintance and left
Paris for London and started travelling. He went to Italy, Switzerland,
Egypt, Greece, Turkey, France, Spain…but – as it happened to numerous other great artists of the nineteenth century (J.W. Turner) – it is
Venice that captures his most intense emotions. In forty years, he visited Venice around a dozen times. This “love” will bring him to produce, between 1879 and 1913, around one hundred and fifty canvases
and watercolours with the Venice theme. The exhibition “Sargent and
Venice” (on show until July 22 at the Museo Correr) proposes – for the
first time in Venice – over fifty selected works borrowed from outstanding public and private collections. Although he is considered one of
the most outstanding Anglo-Saxon portrayers (the portrait of the oil
baron Rockefeller and of Wilson, the president of the Red Cross),
Sargent also explored the potentials of the painting “en plein air” that
captured the most unusual and ambiguous spaces, thus becoming the
main exponent of the American impressionism. His “views” of Venice
are considered singular and unique – since they were painted from a
gondola. Absolute masterpieces achieved thanks to an extraordinary
technique that perfectly depicts the different light effects seen from the
Canal Grande (“Gondolas off San Giorgio Maggiore”; Gondolier’s
Siesta”; “Under the Rialto”). Equally important his interior and overall
views (“Sortie de l’église”).

It was an ancient and unique privilege of artists that of being included, on a par with saints and noble
men (even in humble positions), in scenes of great religious and civil importance. But how did artists see
themselves and how did they want to be seen by the public? There is no better museum in the entire
world than the “Galleria degli Uffizi” in Florence – that gathers the largest number of artist self-portraits –
that can answer to such a question. The collection, that was begun not too long after the first half of the
seventeenth century by Cardinal Leopoldo de’ Medici, disciple of the Casa Medici, boasts today around
one thousand six hundred pieces that tell the story of world painting through the faces of its major exponents, protagonists and co-stars. Until May 6 at Palazzo Fianchetti, seat of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze,
Lettere ed Arti (institute of science, literature and art of the Veneto region), around seventy works of art
will be exhibited thanks to a project by Antonio Paolucci and to the work of Giovanna Giusti and Maria
Sfarmeli. The selection of paintings comprises a span of four centuries of painting – from the XV to the XX
century – through the portrayal of their faces: from Raffaelo (1506) and Tintoretto (1585 c.) to Bernini
(1635), Velázquez (1792), Rembrandt (1655), Canova (1792), Chagall (1959-1968), Mitoraj and Paladino
(2003). Art and psychology in comparison, but perhaps also art and ideology and…narcissism.

Fu antico e unico il privilegio degli artisti d’inserirsi, alla pari di santi e nobili (anche in umile posizione), in scene di grande importanza religiosa o civile, ma com’è che gli artisti vedevano se stessi e intendevano essere visti dal loro pubblico? A questa domanda si sa nessun museo al mondo
può rispondere meglio della Galleria degli Uffizi di Firenze, che raccoglie il maggior numero di
autoritratti d’artista. La collezione, iniziata poco dopo la metà del Seicento dal Cardinal Leopoldo
de’ Medici, cadetto di Casa Medici, vanta ora circa milleseicento pezzi: essi raccontano la storia
della pittura mondiale attraverso i volti dei suoi maggiori esponenti, protagonisti e comprimari. Fino al 6 maggio a Palazzo Fianchetti,
sede dell’Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti, circa una settantina di tali opere, provenienti proprio dagli Uffizi, è esposta grazie al
progetto di Antonio Paolucci e al lavoro di Giovanna Giusti e Maria Sfarmeli. La selezione di dipinti comprende un vasto arco di tempo
- dal XV al XX secolo - oltre quattro secoli di pittura raccontati attraverso la raffigurazione del volto: da Raffaello (1506) e Tintoretto

Henry James parla di “An interior in Venice” - dipinto da Sargent nel
1898 - in una lettera del 1899 indirizzata ai due coniugi americani
Curtis, padroni del palazzo Barbaro di Venezia (dove lo scrittore fu
ospite durante i suoi soggiorni veneziani) e ritratti nel quadro. Questo
fatto ben documenta una serie di interessanti coincidenze: così come
i Curtis – che lasciarono Boston nel 1877 – anche i genitori di
J.S.Sargent lasciarono l’America nel 1854 per ricercare nel clima
mediterraneo un rimedio alle cattive condizioni di salute della madre
(Mary N. Singer), oltre che una maggiore tranquillità, dato che di lì a
poco inizierà la guerra di secessione americana (1861-65). Così, nel
1856, John Singer Sargent nasce a Firenze e trascorre l’infanzia negli
stimolanti ambienti delle più importanti città europee. Incoraggiato
fin da giovanissimo alla pratica della pittura dalla madre - donna colta,
appassionata d’arte e di letteratura – si trasferisce a Parigi nel 1874 per
frequentare l’atelier del noto ritrattista Carolus-Duran. Due anni
dopo conosce Monet, quindi lascia Parigi per Londra e comincia a
viaggiare. Si reca in Italia, Svizzera, Egitto, Grecia, Turchia, Francia,
Spagna…ma - così come avvenne per molti altri grandi artisti
dell’Ottocento (J.W. Turner) – è Venezia a catturare le sue più intense emozioni. In quarant’anni la visita una dozzina di volte. Questo
amore lo condurrà a produrre, tra il 1879 e il 1913, oltre centocinquanta olii e acquerelli a tema veneziano. La mostra “Sargent and
Venice” (fino al 22 luglio al Museo Correr), propone – per la prima
volta proprio a Venezia - oltre cinquanta opere selezionate e provenienti da importanti collezioni pubbliche e private. Ancorché sia considerato il più ambito ritrattista anglosassone (tra i suoi più famosi
ritratti quello del magnate del petrolio Rockefeller e del presidente
della Croce Rossa Wilson), Sargent esplorò anche le potenzialità della
cosiddetta pittura “en plein air”, che cattura gli spazi più inconsueti e
sfuggenti, divenendo il principale esponente dell’impressionismo
americano. Caratteristiche e uniche - poiché dipinte da una gondola sono le sue “vedute” di Venezia: capolavori assoluti frutto d’una
straordinaria tecnica che restituisce perfettamente i giochi di luce colti
sul Canal Grande (“Gondolas off San Giorgio Maggiore”;
“Gondolier’s Siesta”; “Under the Rialto”) ma importanti anche le sue
visioni d’interno e d’insieme (“Sortie de l’église”).

he first retrospective in Europe dedicated to the American
artist. It was to Richard Pousette-Dart that, in 1947, Peggy
Guggenheim dedicated an exhibition in her gallerymuseum “Art of This Century” in New York. His most famous
masterpiece, “Symphony number 1, the transcendental” (1941-42
c.) was exhibited for the first time here. Richard Pousette-Dart
(1916 Saint Paul, Minnesota – 1992 New York), member of the
first generation of abstract expressionism, was one of the founders
of the “New York School” – active at the beginning of the 40s –
in which numerous outstanding names linked to modern art took
part, from Pollock to Rothko and Kooning. During those years,
Pousette-Dart’s technique achieved a new emphasis in the use of
materials, strokes and colour, i.e., the characteristics of the so-called “action painting”, exemplified by paintings such as
“Crucifixion, comprehension of the atom” (1944). In 1950, he
was immortalized together with 14 other artists of the group of
abstract expressionists: a picture that went down in history as a
symbol image of the “Irascibles”. Pousette-Dart’s paintings, like
those by Pollock, Gorky and Baziotes, were exhibited for the first
time in Europe in 1948, thanks to Peggy, on the occasion of the
presentation of her collection at the XXIV Biennale of Venice.

Magistratures, the Palace is the supreme embodiment of Venetian civilisation. A masterpiece of gothic architecture, it reveals a grandiose stratification
of building and ornamental elements.
The interiors, superbly decorated by
legions of artists, including Tiziano,
Veronese, Tintoretto, Vittoria and
Tiepolo, offer a range of different
experiences: from the vast halls of political power to the interior finishings of
the Doge's chambers, from the gloom
of the prison cells to the brightness of
the loggias overlooking St. Mark’s

long with Rembrandt and Goya, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) is one of
the all-time greatest exponents of the art of engraving. A true Lutheran,
according to whom the progress of technical tools is granted to the wit
of man directly by God, he most likely prefigured the Calvinist idea according
to which each man must earn his “elected” status through his practical deeds,
under the awareness of a destiny determined invariably by God. Shifting attention from the role of craftsmanship to that of approach, he transformed his
workshop into an actual “research lab” : an workshop of ideas, experiments,
technical elaboration, the center of which, like in Leonardo's and
Michelangelo's case, was no longer the result alone but rather the project itself.
“Dürer Workshop” is the actual title of the exhibition which, at the Museo
Diocesano until June 30th 2007, will display one-hundred among the most
important engravings and woodcuts of the great artist from Nurnberg - the
Apocalypse (1498), The Great (1511) and the Little Passion (1509-11),
Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Melencolia I (1514) - enriched and made
unique by his important studies on the human body and on perspective.

Proprio a Richard Pousette-Dart, nel 1947, Peggy Guggenheim dedicò una mostra nella sua galleria-museo Art Of
This Century a New York. Qui veniva esposto per la prima volta
“Sinfonia numero 1, il trascendentale” (1941-42 circa) il suo capolavoro più noto. Appartenente alla prima generazione dell’Espressionismo astratto, Richard Pousette-Dart (1916 Saint Paul,
Minnesota - 1992 New York), fu uno dei membri fondatori della
cosiddetta Scuola di New York - attiva dall'inizio degli anni ‘40 - alla
quale aderirono grandi nomi dell’arte moderna da Pollock a Rothko
e de Kooning. In quegli anni, la tecnica di Pousette-Dart si arricchì
di enfasi nell'uso dei materiali, del gesto e del colore: le caratteristiche della cosiddetta action painting, esemplificate da dipinti come
“Crocefissione, comprensione dell’atomo” (1944). Nel 1950, fu
immortalato insieme agli altri 14 artisti del gruppo degli
Espressionisti astratti: una fotografia entrata nella storia dell'arte
come immagine simbolo degli "Irascibili." I dipinti di Pousette-Dart,

between 1537 and 1560, at the request
of the Procurators of St. Mark, in order
to receive Latin and Greek codes, gifts

Library houses a priceless book collection of Venice’s Serenissima Republic.

Officina Durer
The museum contains many finds of
Venetian convents and churches and is
located in the St. Apollonia convent

INLAND ARCHIV “LA SVIZZERA IN GIRO PER L`ITALIA” DI ERICH BUSSLINGER
Erich Busslinger's video installation "Inland Archive" offers a glimpse of
Switzerland. This work in progress is actually a collection of several hundred sequences of Swiss contemporary life. The point of departure was
the geographical map of Switzerland and the areal postal codes. From
1999 to 2003 the Swiss artist Erich Busslinger diced postal codes and visited the area with his videocamera and the intention to focus here and
now on the given reality with the curious eye of a foreigner. In this way
he accumulated a cross-section of the cultural diversity of Switzerland.
La video installazione è un work in progress iniziato come collezione di codici postali e cartine geografiche. Il video nasce quando
Erich Busslinger, tornato in Svizzera da un lungo viaggio in Russia,
vede il proprio paese con l’occhio disincantato e curioso dello straniero. Inizia così a filmare la Svizzera e prosegue dal 1999 al 2003
arrivando a disegnarne un ritratto non convenzionale, a volte dissacrante e irriverente. L’installazione video riunisce una sequenza di
alcune centinaia di immagini che danno luogo a una visione d’insieme capace di portare alla luce dicotomie e differenze sociali.

The Basilica of Saints Giovanni and Paolo is the largest and grandest church in Venice. The
tomb of doge Tiepolo, placed on its façade, still recalls the vision thanks to which the area
where the church today stands was assigned to the Dominicans. There the doge had indeed
seen a paradisiacal meadow full of candid doves (that symbolised the Dominican Friars dressed in white) and two angels with golden incense burners, while God’s voice said: “This is the
place I have chosen for my Preachers.” The church soon became a sort of mausoleum of the
doges and of the brave leaders of the Republic. A part from the one hundred and fifty pavement tombs, there are thirty-seven funerary monuments in the inside, fifteen of which are
dedicated to the doges. Many of them are works by some of the most outstanding Venetian
sculptors and enable us to retrace the history of various types of tombs in Venice from 1200
to 1700. What is also suggestive is its gothic glass window (end 1400 – 1515). It represents,
through images, the Christian faith that is born from the Word, the Spirit and Christ to be
spread thanks to the Church, to its Saints and preachers, recalled by the Dominican Saints.
Among them Giovanni and Paolo, two Roman officers beheaded in the IV century because
of their faith and considered models of purity, unity in faith, chastity and charity.
La Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo è la chiesa più grande ed imponente di Venezia. La tomba del doge Tiepolo,
posta sulla facciata, ricorda ancora la visione che gli fece assegnare ai domenicani l’area sulla quale sorge ancora la chiesa: il doge vide infatti in quel luogo un prato paradisiaco pieno di candide colombe (ovvero i frati domenicani vestiti di bianco) e due angeli con turiboli d’oro, mentre la voce di Dio tuonava: “Questo è il luogo prescelto per i miei Predicatori”. La chiesa presto diventò una sorta di mausoleo dei dogi e dei valorosi condottieri della
Repubblica. Escludendo le 150 tombe pavimentali, all’interno ci sono infatti 37 monumenti funerari, dei quali 15
dedicati a dogi: molti di essi sono firmati da alcuni tra i più importanti scultori veneziani, e permettono di ricostruire la storia delle tipologie tombali a Venezia tra la fine del 1200 e il 1700. Suggestiva è la grande vetrata gotica
(fine1400 -1515): rappresenta per immagini la fede cristiana che nasce dalla Parola, dallo Spirito e da Cristo per poi
diffondersi grazie alla Chiesa, ai suoi santi e ai suoi predicatori, ricordati dai santi domenicani. Tra questi, Giovanni
e Paolo, due ufficiali romani decapitati nel IV secolo per la loro fede e considerati esempi di purezza, unità nella
fede, castità e carità.
The most famous Basilica in Venice. The
exterior façades are decorated in
Byzantine style, with columns, basreliefs and coloured marble. On the terrace stand four imposing gilded bronze
horses. The building has five large
domes. The church is decorated inside
with gilded mosaics and treasures representing stories from the Bible.

Founded in the 12th century, this church
was rebuilt during the 17th century and,
at the beginning of the 18th century, it
was modified also its aspect, facing now
the Grand Canal: the new façade made
by the architect Domenico Rossi. The
church contains a veritable compendium of Venetian 18th -century paintings including an early work by Tiepolo.

It is an example of Gothic architecture
in Venice built between the 14th and
15th century and laid out in the form
of a Latin cross: it is composed of three
naves divided by twelve huge pillars.

This church was probably built in the 9th
The church has Byzantine origins, but
very few remains of the ancient building, modified during the XV century
and then restored at the beginning of
the XIX by the architect Davide Rossi.
He perfectly harmonized his NeoClassical choises with the original late
Gothic structure.

MADONNA DELL'ORTO

Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San
Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto
when an imagine of the Virgin, found
in a garden nearby, was brought in the
church itself. It is a typical Venetian
Gothic religious buildings. It was
Tintoretto’s parish church and he is
buried with his family in the chapel to
the right of the high altar.

In the middle of the 17th century,
Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the
Republic of Venice’s Senate decided
that a church should have been built,
dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for
Health (salute). Between eleven plans
presented, it was chosen the one by
Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple
having a central area on an octagonal
plan, dominated by a huge dome
with great arches.

Tintoretto, “Pentecoste” by Tiziano, “La
Madonna Bizantina” work from the
13th-century Greek-Byzantine school.
Events: every year on November 21 the
inhabitants process to the Salute for a
service of thanksgiving for deliverence
from the palgue.

According to the legend, this is one of
the eight churches founded by St.
Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII
century, and dedicated to the Virgin
who appeared in a dream to the
Bishop. However, the church, as we
can see it nowadays, was built in 1492
by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance.
The building has a Greek cross pattern, with three naves and the roof in
the shape of a cross vault.

One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s
architecture, and by some considered his
masterpiece, this church was built as a
result of a motion carried by the Senate
after the plague that struck Venice in
1576.
It is a votive temple dedicated to the
Redeemer.

Sunday of July, the temple is the destination of a pilgrimage.

It was built between the 14th and the
15th centuries and it is the largest
church in Venice. After S. Marco, this
was considered an “official” temple: it
was used for the solemn obsequies of
the dead Doges. The magnificent interior is in the form of a Latin cross, it has

polygonal apse.

It is one of the most beautiful VenetianByzantine buildings of the 12th century.
The exterior of the hexagonal apse is
very interesting, both for its architectural
beauty and the wealth of its decorative
elements. Five columns of Greek marble
divide the interior into three naves.

patterns and symbolic pictures of animals.

The old church, which belonged to the
nuns of the convent bearing the same
name, is located near the main church,
which was built by Codussi between
1480 and 1500. The new façade is a
typical example of Venetian Renaissance. Two rows of columns with beautiful capitals divided the interior into
three aisles. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings.

SANTA MARIA DEL ROSARIO
CHIESA DEI GESUATI
Built by the Carmelites and dedicated
to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade,
made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style.
Once there was also a marvellous
vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by
Austrian bombs.
To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.
This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a
Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest
monument of this type preserved in
the lagoon. The simple and solemn
interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics.
To see: the mosaics of the small apse on
ble portal attributed to Bartolomeo Bon.
The interior is divided into three wide
longitudinal Greek marble naves, the
presbytery has interesting inlaid wooden
choir stalls and the ceiling is shaped like
an inverted ship’s hull.
To see: “La lavanda dei piedi” and
“Cristo nell’orto” by J. Tintoretto; “Il
Battesimo di Cristo” by Paris Bordone.
The church of the Jesuits was built
between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they
took the place of the Jesuits, in order to
replace the small church that still stands
beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author
of the church’s design and of the internal
decoration, assisted by two great artists
of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and
Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with
its single nave, side chapels and a deep
presbytery, is beautifully balanced.
To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling by
G.B. Tiepolo, the altarpiece by
Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by
Tintoretto.
The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario
was founded before 1071, but nothing
remains of the primitive building, due to
the devastating fire that swept through
the Rialto area in 1514. The current
building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with
many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that
used the church premises.
To see: The altarpieces by Titian and by
Pordenone and the frescoes in the
cupola came to light again during the
restoration work.

It’s one of the six Scuole Grandi and,
according to Venice history, art and culture, it’s considered one of the greatest. The
building is a splendid Renaissance architecture example. The elegant double
stairway inside, lit with large arched windows, was built by Codussi. The beautiful

carved decoration, was designed by P.
Lombardo.

Apocalypse, works of great masters such

designed by Bartolomeo Bon, lodges
the school dedicated to San Rocco, the

The art of glassblowing was to be practiced only within the Murano Island,
where it was transferred from Venice
several centuries ago and where it can
be better treasured and watched over.
This is, more or less, what the
“Mariegole della arte dei verieri de
Muran” (rules of the art of Murano glassworkers) ordered in 1441. Glass had to
be created only in Murano.
L'arte dei verieri non deve aver altro recinto ove poter esercitarsi che la sola isola di
Muran, in cui è stata da Venezia già da vari
secoli trasportata, e dove, prossima da per
tutto a se stessa, e senza dispersioni di
Maestranze né di Fornaci, può più facilmente essere custodita ed osservata”.Così
imponeva la “Mariegole della arte dei
verieri de Muran” nel 1441: tutti i vetri si
dovranno fare esclusivamente a Murano.

On Murano, universally known as “the island of glass” and therefore of art and illumination, “Fratelli Barbini” represent a lesser but as
qualified sector: the creation of ornamental mirrors and engraved
glassware. Just as in renaissance times Venice is still noted for the
high perfection of its cut and engraved glassware. Hence the origin
of the “Venetian mirror”. With a craftmanship that can be traced as
far back as 1650, the Barbini family has always left the mark in the

thanks to the enhancement of the structures of the VTP S.p.A. that
can now count not only on Terminals 103, 107 and 108 but also on
the renewed area of Terminal 117. The ground floor, consisting of an
overall area of 4,325 square metres, was completely restored. What
was once an old port depot is today a multifunctional area that is able
to host fairs and conferences within the fascinating environment of
the Venice lagoon. The renovation of Terminal 117 is a response to
the radical and constant evolution of the port area, which today plays
a key role, particularly in the light of the past year’s positive trend in
terms of passenger traffic. Indeed, Venice has become one of the first
homeports of the Mediterranean. A fact that is confirmed by the
record figures registered in 2006: 1,453,513 the overall passengers,
465,604 the ferry passengers and 111,245 the hydrofoil passengers,
with a 2007 forecast of 995,561 passengers in the cruising sector.

Venice International Floating Show

Salone Nautico Internazionale di Venezia
Since 1997, the Venice Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A. (VTP S.p.A.) –
Venice passenger port – has been promoting the passenger activities of the Venice port and is active in the areas of Marittima and
S. Basilio, in an overall area of over 260,000 square metres,
44,000 of which are covered and with 123,700 square metres of
water surface. The port depot, which has recently been restored,
is not only a modern terminal that can satisfy the needs of cruisers, ferries, hydrofoils or large boats but also a dynamic and innovative fair centre provided with a large area that can be used for
any type of exhibition. A location that, from the 17 till 25 March
2007, will host for the sixth consecutive year the Venice
International Floating Show.
For the VTP S.p.A. the nautical sector is one of great interest also
given the increasing demand of mega yachts which need places
where to stop in Venice. To respond to such a need, Venezia
Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A. founded two specialized companies,
of which it is the main shareholder: Venice Yacht S.r.l. (V.Y.P.)
and Venice Yachts and Ships Assistance (V.Y.S.A.). V.Y.P. was
founded three years ago with the aim to foster the development of
the yachting industry. The Floating Show is one of the exhibitions
included in the fair-conference programme of the VTP S.p.A.
which is rich in events
linked to the boat, ecology, cultural heritage
and fashion sectors. The
forthcoming “MEC International Utilities Forum” (9-11 May) and the
Cultural Heritage Show
(that will take place in
the forthcoming fall) certainly deserve being
mentioned. The achievement of such a rich programme was possible

The sixth edition of the Venice International Floating Show,
scheduled from 17 to 25 March, will present itself as a real Sea
Festival dedicated to all those who love the boat sector: sports
events, meetings, workshops, fashion, exhibitions, water races.
An event which is in continuous growth and that is becoming
an important point of reference among the boat shows of the
Adriatic. A success testified by a 30% increase in exhibitors and
a sound increase in the number of its foreign guests. Also this

including sailing, speedboat racing, canoeing, performances of
rescue-dogs and of firemen. Further events that cannot be missed are the charity regatta “Trofeo
Croce Rossa” (red cross trophy), the
“Regata Padre e Figli” (father and son
regatta) and the “Trofeo Alto Adriatico

Terminal 117. L’intervento ha interessato il piano terra per complessivi 4.325 mq, trasformando un antico magazzino portuale
in una struttura terminalistica multifunzionale che può ospitare
anche fiere e congressi nell’affascinante contesto della laguna
veneziana. La ristrutturazione del Terminal 117 risponde alla
radicale e continua evoluzione dell’area portuale ritenuta necessaria alla luce del trend positivo in atto da alcuni anni per il traffico passeggeri, con Venezia tra i primi homeport nel
Mediterraneo. Il dato è confortato dalla cifra record toccata nel
2006: 1.453.513 passeggeri complessivi di cui 885.664 crocieristi, 456.604 passeggeri traghetti e 111.245 passeggeri aliscafi,
con una previsione per il 2007, relativa al solo comparto crocieristico di 471 toccate per una stima di 995.561 passeggeri.

personally managed by Davide Bravetti, a venetian with the passion of the simple venetian cuisine and its very typical dishes. The dried salted cod with polenta, the notorious “sarde in saor”, the “antipasto dell’Adriatico”, the tagliolini
with scampi and courgette, the spaghetti in clam sauce and the cuttlefish ink
risotto. Main courses feature the mixed grilled fish, the gilthead fillet with
Carline thistle, and Adriatic fish fry. Top meat dishes are the traditional “fegato
alla vaneziana” (liver), the rosemary salted steak and the green pepper fillet . All
desserts are home-made, they represent the ideal complement for your full

esurrection Sunday is celebrated by donating and eating hardboiled
coloured eggs blessed in church. The egg is everything and nothing at the
same time. It is the symbol of birth and Resurrection. This year, Easter
occurs late compared to the previous year and recipes will contain ingredients
which are typically found in April. In Venice, like in the rest of the peninsula, the
consumption of goat and kid meat is a typical tradition deriving from an ancient
Jewish custom. With the new season approaching you'll be able to find the fresh
new aromatic herbs and ‘wild’ edible weeds spontaneously growing in your gardens that can be used for your Easter recipes. The “cavreto de Pasqua” (Easter
roast kid) used to be spit-roasted and it was filled with rosemary, chopped bacon,
garlic and sprinkled from time to time with white wine and pomegranate. The
sauce of the dripping-pan was then used to dress the bitter wild weeds which had
been previously boiled and squeezed. Happy Easter and do not forget to eat the
“fugassa” (or ‘Colomba’, literally meaning ‘dove’, is a typical Easter cake ndt)!

a Domenica della Resurrezione si festeggia donando e mangiando uova sode colorate benedette in Chiesa. L’uovo è tutto
in sé, e niente al tempo stesso. Rappresenta la nascita e la
resurrezione. Quest’anno la Santa Pasqua è alta e di conseguenza
molti ingredienti ci riportano a un mese di Aprile inoltrato. A Venezia
come nella penisola non si può prescindere dall’agnello o dal capretto come da antica usanza ebraica, e se ci guardiamo attorno possiamo già pensare alle prime erbette spontanee e dire: “no ghe xe erba
che varda in su che no gabia a so virtù”, ricordando che il “cavreto de
Pasqua” lo si cuoceva allo spiedo farcito di rosmarino, battuto di pancetta ed aglio, irrorandolo di tanto in tanto con vino bianco e melograno. Poi col sugo della leccarda si condivano le erbe amare di
campo, prima lessate e poi strizzate. Buona Pasqua e non dimenticate “la fugassa”.

Garnish:
Dry plums, roasted almonds
sliced bacon fat, smashed potatoes
Cut the chops, carve them into the center
and stuff them with the fat liver. Carve the
plums, remove the bone and stuff them with
fat liver and almonds then wrap them up
with the bacon fat. Place them into the
fridge for 30 minutes. Whisk the sliced
bread and chop together thymus, rosemary
and a bit of truffle, add salt and hot pepper, toast it all into an antiadherent pan.
Cook the plum always into antiadherent
pan. Cook the chops with a little of oil, dry them with blotting paper and
“paint” them with the white mustard, dust them with the breaded thymus,
rosemary and truffle. Serve with smashed potatoes, garnish with the plums
and a paint of cooking soup.

COSTOLETTE DI AGNELLO FARCITE AL
FEGATO GRASSO IN CROSTA DI PANE
Ingredienti per 4 persone:
Fegato grasso 200g, tartufo nero qb
farina 60g, carrè d’agnello 1.5 kg
pan carrè 150g, rosmarino
timo, sale, peperoncino
senape diluita con poca acqua.
Guarnizione
Prugne secche, mandorle tostate
fettine di lardo, purè di patate.
Tagliare 4 fettine di fegato ed il restante a cubetti,
spolverare di farina, salare e cuocere in padella
antiaderente molto calda per 3 minuti. Far raffreddare. Tagliare le costolette, inciderle a metà
formando una tasca e farcirle con il fegato grasso,
e incidere le prugne, eliminare l’osso, farcire con
fegato grasso e mandorla, avvolgerle nel lardo e far
riposare in frigorifero 30 min. Frullare il pan carre
e tritare le erbette. Mescolare il pane e le erbette,
salare ed aggiungere un pizzico di peperoncino,
tostare in padella antiaderente. Cuocere le prugne in padella antiaderente e mettere da
parte. Cuocere le costolette in padella antiaderente con un filo d’olio. Asciugarle su carta
assorbente e spennellarle con la senape e spolverarle con la panatura alle erbette. Servire
con purè di patate, decorare con le prugne e una pennellata di sugo di cottura.

’20, molti dipinti straordinari che non compaiono in
mostre pubbliche o private da prima della seconda
guerra mondiale. I curatori (Paolo Baldacci e Gerd
Roos) si sono mossi nell’intento di rendere accessibile
al pubblico la complessità di un artista che ha prodotto un corpus di opere vastissimo ma discontinuo e
che ha avuto un’attività più che sessantennale
segnata da frequenti inversioni di rotta e contraddizioni più apparenti che sostanziali.

È la più ampia mostra mai dedicata ai primi anni della carriera artistica di Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), l'esposizione promossa dall'Amministrazione comunale di Mogliano Veneto e realizzata in collaborazione con la
Fondazione Alberto Giacometti e il Kunsthaus di Zurigo. Riunisce la più vasta raccolta di opere del primo
Giacometti, oltre 70 tra sculture, dipinti, disegni e acquarelli dal 1911 (anno in cui l'artista ha dieci anni) fino al
1929, quando Giacometti è scoperto dai surrealisti. Numerosi gli inediti provenienti da collezioni private - 3
dipinti e oltre 20 tra acquarelli e disegni, tutti mai esposti prima - concorreranno, insieme ad una esclusiva
documentazione fotografica, a gettare nuova luce sulla datazione di alcune opere.

An organic selection of works, a complete retrospective exhibition on the artist from Rovigo, directed by
Vittorio Sgarbi and coordinated by Alessia Vedova. One hundred and fifty of the artist’s works, unseen ones
as well, for an exhibition that allowed the return of a small nucleus of canvases, which even though intended
for our country, were held in France. Cavaglieri’s artistic course will be documented in its entirety: from the
debut in Padua together with Felice Casorati to the great season of Ca’ Pesaro and the Venetian Biennale
Exhibitions which consecrated the precious refinement of his art, up to the years of his retirement to the
French countryside. The event will also be a precious opportunity to revisit the history, the contradictions and
the different influences of the early 1900 art, through the fascination and the mystery of Cavaglieri’s painting.

BASSANO
Bellotto, Boccioni, Morandi, Vedova, Tancredi, Dorazio. Un patrimonio d’arte che spazia dalla fine del
Trecento agli anni ’80 del Novecento, custodito nella sede della Fondazione Cariverona e della
Fondazione Domus a Verona, viene eccezionalmente esposto nella nuova ala del Museo Civico di
Bassano per festeggiare il completamento del primo lotto dei lavori della grande nuova struttura culturale della città. La collezione d’arte è di recente e recentissima storia e si coaugula intorno all’importante acquisto, nel 2000, della “Veduta di Castelvecchio e del ponte scaligero da monte dell’Adige”, commissionata nel 1747 al pittore veneziano Bernardo Bellotto.

Bellotto, Boccioni, Morandi, Vedova, Tancredi, Dorazio. An artistic legacy that spaces from the 13th century
till the 1980s, fostered in the main office of the Cariverona Establishment and Domus in Verona. In exceptional conditions, all of this will be exhibited in the Civic Museum of Bassano in order to celebrate the fulfillment
of the first completed work project of this great, new cultural structure in the city. The art collection is of recent
history and is curdled around the important purchase in the year 2000 of the “Veduta di Castelvecchio e del
ponte scaligero da monte dell’Adige”, ordered in 1747 to be done by the Venetian painter, Bernardo Bellotto.

VECIA BRENTA
Una monografica organica, una retrospettiva completa quella sull’artista rodigino curata da Vittorio
Sgarbi e coordinata di Alessia Vedova. Centocinquanta opere dell’artista, anche inedite, per una mostra
che ha consentito il recupero all’Italia di un nucleo di tele che, pur destinate al nostro Paese, erano trattenute da decenni in Francia. Il percorso artistico di Cavaglieri è interamente documentato: dagli esordi
padovani insieme a Felice Casorati, alla grande stagione di Ca’ Pesaro e delle Biennali veneziane che
consacrarono la preziosa ricercatezza della sua arte, fino agli anni del suo ritiro nella campagna francese. L’evento sarà anche una preziosa occasione per rileggere attraverso il fascino ed il mistero della sua
pittura la storia, le contraddizioni e le diverse influenze dell’arte dei primi del Novenento.

TREVISO
It is the most extensive exhibition ever dedicated to the artistic career of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966).
The exhibition, promoted by the municipal administration of Mogliano Veneto and organized in concert
with the Alberto Giacometti Foundation and the Zurich Kunsthaus, gathers the most comprehensive collection of works of the early Giacometti. There are over 70 pieces: sculptures, paintings, drawings and
watercolours from 1911 (year in which the artist was 10 years old) to 1929, when Giacometti is discovered
by the surrealists. There are many previously unrevealed pieces from private collections – 3 paintings and
over 20 watercolours and drawings, all displayed for the first time ever – which will participate along with
an exclusive photographic documentary to shine new light on the dating of some works.
