squarely in the hands of the designercreator of the logo. I was fortunate to be
entrusted with the opportunity to create this
baby nine months ago in October 2013.
The convention logo had to tell a story of the events to come and the place where it’s held. It had to
embrace the passion of the Tamils of Missouri and Southern Illinois, living at the confluence of the mighty
Mississippi and meandering Missouri rivers, who have ardently adopted this fertile land as their home ‘away
from home’ and enrich it by revealing and reveling in their ancient culture through இயல் (Iyal, literature), இசை
(Isai, music) and நாடகம் (Nadagam, drama) and in addition via its authors, architects and artists, both ancient
and modern.
The FeTNA XXVII – Tamil Convention (in short தமிழ் விழா)‘s logo
encompasses all the of elements above and the event is eagerly
anticipated to match or exceed the cheerfulness, color and dynamism of
the logo. The silhouette of வள்ளுவர் (Valluvar) is synonymous with
literature, the பசை (Parai) drummer representing music and the ைிலம்பம்
(Silambam) stance a stand in for dance and drama (Nadagam). The city
of St. Louis opened to all the unexplored territory west of the Mississippi
early in the nineteenth century and was the gateway to the west. The Arch
depicted in the logo stands on the banks of the Mississippi river
memorializing this history and has been adopted by St. Louisans as their
revered icon for nearly half a century. The words “ தமிழ் விழா “ is a ryot
of colors and depicts the inescapable truth that the 77 million Tamils of
the world represent all the diversity that is known to human kind such as
race, religion, region, ethnicity, etc, yet warmly welcoming the
differences and unabashedly inclusive.
TAP Logo : The migration of Tamilians to all corners of the world started
millenia ago and continues to this day. Tamilians and their descendants are thriving and
striving in all continents and practically every country. The most sought after
destination in recent decades has been the United States of America. The USA has
attracted more than its fair share of the best and brightest from Tamil Nadu. With that in
mind and a desire to recognize the high achievers among us and reveal them to our next
generation, that the inaugural TAP award, aka Tamil American Pioneers award has been
instituted under the auspices of FeTNA.
To continue this tradition in future years and make it distinctive, the TAP logo was commissioned. The
logo I created embraces the letters of the acronym, TAP. The letters weave in and out of each other and the
letter ‘A’ is completed by extension of the ‘T’ and ‘P’, which are mirror images. This TAP award logo will
forever show that Saint Louis, the Gateway to the West for the pioneers of a different generation and time, home
to the Arch, represented by the curved ‘A’ was the birth place of this unique recognition of Tamil pioneers.
