Servizi di Medicina di Laboratorio Laboratorio Analisi PATIENT INFORMATION COLLECTING SPUTUM SAMPLES FOR CULTURE AND MYCOBACTERIUM/KOCH BACILLUS The patient needs to: Obtain a sterile container for collecting the sputum (available to purchase from pharmacies). The sputum must be collected in the morning before eating. Clean the mouth well and gargle with water. Collect the expectorated material in the sterile container after a cough. The expectorated material must come from the lower airways and not be saliva. In the event of difficulty in expectorating, a cough can be induced using a nebulizer containing a saline solution (not drugs). Deliver the container to the Test Centre (Centro Prelievi) in Via Jommelli 2 within two hours. Register beforehand at the Payment/Registration Service (Servizio Cassa/Accettazione) in Via Jommelli 2, from Monday to Friday between 7.15 and 10.00 am. The patient should bring: - The request from his/her doctor. - Personal identity documents (health service card, ID card and exemption cards, if applicable). If requested, take samples on three separate days. For the test to be carried out properly, each sample should be delivered on the same day it is taken (within two hours). If delivery on the day is not possible, the sample should be stored in the fridge for no more than 72 hours. Patient registration will take place on delivery of the first sample. On the following two days the sample is just delivered. Register at the Payment/Registration Service (Servizio Cassa/Accettazione) in Via Jommelli 2, from Monday to Friday between 7.15 and 10.00 am. The patient should bring: o The request from his/her doctor. o Personal identity documents (health service card, ID card and exemption cards, if applicable). o Sputum samples for mycobacterium/Koch bacillus testing Deliver the container to the Test Centre (Centro Prelievi) on the 2nd floor of Via Jommelli 2.
