The LESSLOSS project addresses research issues on
seismic engineering, earthquake risk and impact
assessment, landslides monitoring, mapping and
management
strategies,
improved
disaster
preparedness and mitigation of geotechnical hazards,
development of advanced methods for risk assessment,
methods of appraising environmental quality and
relevant pre-normative research.

This project is aimed at fully exploiting the
possibilities offered by a real time analysis of the
signals coming from seismic networks for a wide
range of actions, performed in a time interval of a
few seconds to some tens of minutes. These actions
range from the shut down of critical systems of
lifelines, industries, highways, railways, etc. and the
activation of control systems for the protection of
crucial structures, to decision support for rapid
response of the emergency management (ground
shaking maps, continuously expected damage
scenarios, aftershocks hazard etc.).

The project main goal is to contribute to our
understanding of tsunami processes in the EuroMediterranean region, to the tsunami hazard,
vulnerability and risk assessment and to identifying
the best strategies for reduction of tsunami risk.
Focus will be posed on the gaps and needs for the
implementation of an efficient tsunami early warning
system (TEWS) in the Euro-Mediterranean area,
which is a high-priority task in consideration that no
tsunami early warning system is today in place in
the Euro-Mediterranean countries.

Considerazioni conclusive su FP6 …
•
Dispersione dei finanziamenti, attraverso STREP e SSA e in
controtendenza rispetto alle innovazioni di FP6 (e.g. Integrated Project)
•
Spazio alla creazione di reti di cooperazione, con l'accento posto su
moduli e modelli nello scambio di informazione, all'interno della
comunità scientifica e con la società nel suo complesso
•
Attenzione alle proposte di sistemi di allerta (soprattutto nei progetti
approvati dopo il terremoto e tsunami di Sumatra, 26 dicembre 2004)
•
Scarsissima attenzione e fondi alla ricerca di dati di base, spesso
nascosti "tra le pieghe" dei progetti di maggior rilievo
