OUR HISTORY
Contship is the abbreviation
of CONTAINER and SHIPPING.
The founder of Contship,
Angelo Ravano, converted all the
family traditional tonnage and
started with fully containerised
ships in 1969, with the slogan
“we bring the ship to your factory”.

Contship was a pioneer of
containerization as per
following milestones.
1969 The first liner service is operated from Fos Sur Mer to Casablanca with M/V Sea Maid (82 TEUs of loading capacity).
1971
Container Terminal operations commence in La Spezia.
It is the first Italian private container terminal.
1977
Contship operates the first ever liner service from Europe to India.
1982 Contship establishes Eagle Container Line the first independent liner service from Europe to Australia.
1987 Operations commence at La Spezia Container Terminal at Fornelli Pier.
1990
SOGEMAR is merged with Intermodale Italia creating the larger private intermodal network in Italy.
1995 Operations commence at Medcenter Container Terminal in Gioia Tauro.
1997
Contship Containerlines business is sold to CP Ships.
1999 Eurokai becomes the main shareholder of Contship Italia Spa.
2002 Terminal Container Ravenna and Cagliari International
2003 Container Terminal join the terminals network.
2008
Operations commence at Tangier.
2012 Oceanogate Italia, the Group rail traction company, starts its
operations.
2013
Further Investments in La Spezia and Ravenna while Gioia
Tauro operates 3 ULCC calls on a weekly basis.
2014 Contship Italia SpA inaugurates its new headquarters in Melzo,
Milan.
2015
Contship at Gioia Tauro and La Spezia operates the largest
containership (16,600 TEUs capacity) ever calling an Italian
port. Rail Hub Milano inaugurates the new development of
Milan based (Melzo) logistic platform.
At present Contship Italia SpA, the holding company of Contship Italia
Group, holds investments in sea ports and rail hubs. Its strategy is to
continue to invest in its core business in the Mediterranean/Black
Sea and World Wide and to achieve constant growth for its Maritime
Container Terminals and Intermodal & Logistics “core” products
providing valued customers with competitive supply chain solutions.
