It was already a big surprise that the band TYSTNADEN released their debut on LIMB MUSIC,
because musically they are not the typical Classic Metal kinda band on LIMB MUSIC, but instead
this band is playing high class female fronted Gothic Metal in the AFTER FOREVER style. It
actually was a bigger surprise they were coming out of Italy, because with a bandname called
TYSTNADEN you would think they were from Sweden or Norway, but they are an Italian band
which are sometimes as good as their famous countrymen of LACUNA COIL. The band has a
very strong female lead singer (Laura De Luca), while the songs are very catchy and radio-ready
if you ask me, because the choruses of songs like "First Embrace", "Munchausen Syndrome"
and "Tystnaden" are very sensational actually. This band came out of nowhere, releasing a
very strong album, very much in the style of AFTER FOREVER, but they do it very well, so
there's no problem at all I guess if you have a superb release like this 'Sham of perfection'.

Wieder macht sich eine „neue“ Band auf den steinigen Weg zum Metal-Olymp, in diesem
Falle mit Namen Tystnaden und veröffentlicht nach zwei Mini-Cds Ihr Debut-Album „Sham
Of Perfection“. Wer jetzt des Namens wegen auf eine skandinavische Herkunft tippt, liegt
leider daneben, denn die fünf Herren nebst der Frontdame Laura kommen aus dem sonnigen
Italien.
Musikalisch erwartet uns hier sicherlich nichts neues, denn die Idee einen düsteren Metal-Sound
mit klarem weiblichen Gesang zu kombinieren, sowie dem Ganzen noch einen männlichen
Growl-Part zur Seite zu stellen, ist ja nun schon ein paar Jahre alt. Heutzutage verstaubt
anmutende Klänge im Sinne früher Werke von Theatre Of Tragedy sollte man jedoch nicht
erwarten, denn zum Vergleich können eher Flowing Tears oder die Landsleute von Lacuna Coil
angeführt werden.
So kreieren Tystnaden auf dieser Scheibe eine sehr moderne Variation aus den Grundzutaten
Gitarre, Keyboard sowie hauptsächlich weiblichen Gesang und eine geringe Dosis männlichen
Growl-Vocals. Die Produktion selbst ist hierbei treffenderweise sehr transparent und druckvoll
geraten, so dass die rythmischen und wenig verspielten Parts durchaus mitreißend aus den
Boxen powern. Das Keyboard ist in einem angenehmen Level gehalten, so dass es die Musik
sinnvoll unterstützt, ohne zu sehr im Vordergrund zu stehen. Lauras Gesang ist zu Anfang
vielleicht etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, besonders das gerollte „R“ hat sich in meinem Gehörgang
zunächst quergestellt. Jedoch weist der Gesang in jedem Fall emotionalen Tiefgang auf, von
flehend/leidend bis leicht ärgerlich oder nahe am Wahnsinn überzeugt die Dame in einem
weiten Bereich. Keyboarder Lorenzo wirkt dagegen mit seiner Gesangsaufgabe vielleicht ein
wenig überlastet, denn die nicht wirklich tiefen Growls hören sich doch recht angestrengt
an.
Im Gesamtkontext hat dies jedoch nicht viel Einfluss und man kann von einer sehr gelungenen
Platte sprechen, die moderne, abwechslungsreiche, dem Gothic-Metal entlehnte Musik bietet,
die gut ins Ohr geht, überzeugend Emotion ausstrahlt und über die gesamte Spielzeit nie
langweilig wird. Fans der bereits oben erwähnten Bands sollten diese Newcomer ganz oben
auf ihrer Liste notieren.

Trotz des schwedischen Namens handelt es sich bei der 1998 gegründeten Formation
TYSTNADEN um Italiener. Nach der Mini-CD "Fragments" landete das Sextett beim Label
LMP und liefert mit "Sham of Perfection" nun das Debütalbum in voller Länge ab. Geboten
wird melodiöser Düstermetall, der in eine gute Produktion gehüllt wurde, welche sowohl die
Stimme von Laura als auch die übrigen Instrumente schön zur Geltung bringt.
Obschon es das Line-Up vermuten lassen würde, sind TYSTNADEN nicht in die Schublade
"NIGHTWISH-Klon" abzulegen. Dafür ist der Gesang von Laura zum Glück zu wenig opernhaft
und erinnert in "Tystnaden" eher an THE GATHERINGs Anneke zu "Nighttime Birds"-Zeiten
oder zu Beginn von "Pride vs. Intellect" gar an eine ruhige TORI AMOS. Meist dominieren
die weiblichen Vocals ganz klar die Klanglandschaft, manchmal kommt aber auch noch ein
tiefes, männliches Krächzen dazu, welches etwa in "Metaphora" die typische "Beauty and the
Beast"-Stimmung aufkommen lässt. Der männliche Part überzeugt hierbei etwas weniger als
derjenige der holden Schönheit, die manchmal auch sehr wehmütig auf sich aufmerksam
macht, was den einen oder anderen abschrecken könnte.
Die Songs der Italiener sind meistens eher gemächlich, treibende Passagen sind selten. Hier
und da setzen TYSTNADEN interessante Akzente, etwa mit den schönen Streichern am Ende
von "The Foolish Plan". Allerdings übernehmen die Keyboards manchmal etwas zu dreist das
Spielfeld und in "The Joke" hat man zeitweise das Gefühl, dass die Eurodance-Truppe OMEN
wohl die Finger an den Tasten hatte. Nichtsdestotrotz ist TYSTNADEN mit "Sham of Perfection"
ein solides Debüt gelungen, welches Freunde von düsteren Klängen mit Engelsstimme
obendrauf sicherlich mal antesten sollten.

Tystnaden ist der Original-Titel des 1963 unter der Regie von Schwedens Kult-Regisseur Ingmar
Bergmann erschienen Skandalfilms. Das Lexikon des internationalen Films rezensiert den
düsteren Film u.a. mit „Inferno der Angst, Verwirrung und Hilflosigkeit“. Dass sechs Italiener,
die Dark Metal spielen, genau diesen Namen für ihre Band gewählt haben, scheint also nicht
von ungefähr zu kommen.
Sehr skandinavisch ist auch der Klang des Debüts „Sham Of Perfection“. Daraus macht die Band
auch keinen Hehl. Schließlich waren es Bands wie In Flames, Dark Tranquility oder Sentenced,
die die Gründungsmitglieder vor 8 Jahren dazu veranlasst haben, sich diesen ungewöhnlichen
Namen zu geben. Diesen Einfluss hört man bei Stücken wie „Metaphora“ oder „The Foolish
Plan“ nur zu deutlich heraus. 1999 entschied sich die Band als Kontrast zu den Growls des
damaligen Sängers Giovanni Garimoldi eine weibliche Stimme aufzunehmen. Laura De Luca ist
eine sehr starke Rock-Sängerin im Stile von Amy Lee und Cristina Scabbia. Sie schlägt mit ihrer
Gesangsleistung die Brücke zwischen dem Melodeath-Fudament und den melodischen GothicBands. Die sehr nach Prog-Metal klingenden Keyboards mit leicht neoklassischem Einschlag
sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil im Klangbild von Tystnaden und sorgen zudem für eine weitere
spannende Facette. Die Melodien, die die sechs Italiener aus diesen Elemente erschaffen sind
von hoher Güte, gehen sofort ins Ohr und machen auch nach mehrmaligen Anhören immer
noch richtig Spaß.
Die Produktion von R.D. Liapakis bringt genau diese Komponenten in die richtige Balance,
so dass „Sham Of Perfection“ ein rundum gelungenes und sehr originelles Album zwischen
Melodeath, Gothic und Neoklassik geworden ist. Sehr stark!

Aufgrund des Coverartworks und dem Namen der Band, der aus dem Schwedischen stammt
und übersetzt Stille bedeutet, könnte man Gefahr laufen, die Italiener Tystnaden in die
typische Gothicschublade zu stecken. Dies würde der Band jedoch nicht gerecht. Zwar haben
Tystnaden einen nicht zu verleugnenden dunklen Touch und die Keys werden gerne und auch
immer mal wieder Melodie führend eingesetzt, aber das 1998 gegründete Sextett verarbeiten
auch allerlei andere Einflüsse in seinem Sound.
So wechselt man in den Songs geschickt von melancholischen, manchmal fast zerbrechlichen
Parts, über rockig treibende und moderne Einschübe bis zu (für die Bandverhältnisse) recht
harschen Passagen. Den wechselnden Emotionen entsprechend variiert auch das Tempo
innerhalb der Stücke immer wieder ohne dabei den roten Faden zu verlieren. Die Songs bleiben
jederzeit nachvollziehbar und werden von den schönen Melodien zusammengehalten und den
gelungenen Vocals getragen. Hierbei wird Frontfrau Laura De Luca immer mal wieder von
Keyboarder Lorenzo Frascaroli unterstützt. Wobei sowohl der dominierende, klare weibliche
Gesang wie auch die männlichen Deathgrowls über genug Substanz verfügen und wir somit
Gott sei Dank fernab des gefürchteten alten Grunz- und Säuselschemas sind.
Ein Debüt also das, wenn auch auf schon bekannte Art und Weise geschickt zwischen den
Stühlen sitzt, aber genug Potential hat um nicht zwischendurch zu rutschen. Oder um es ganz
einfach auszudrücken. Gut!

With a bandname like Tystnaden, you probably start thinking they've a Scandinavian roots
but wrong guess people! Hell no, Tystnaden is Italian based choosing this name because
their interests in bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and stuff like that during the early
days of existence. The real style of Tystnaden took form in 1999 and there they go. First
official release was a MCD entitled "Fragments" which was a great success due to very positive
reactions from both national and international press.
Some record labels approached the band to offer a deal which led to a final agreement with
Limb Music Products. The co-operation with this label was a fact and the recordings for a full
length album started shortly after. Meanwhile, the works are done and the album is ready
to unleash. Some people are making comparisons with bands like Nightwish, Evanescence,
Within Temptation, Epica and so on but...Tystnaden has a great female vocalist, Laura De
Luca in its ranks and i guess that's why people have the immediately reaction to compare with
those bands. Actually and to be honest, Tystnaden's style of music has nothing to do with it!
Here is a serious dose of originality remarkable and that makes the difference between these
them and some of the comparable ones, bands i respect but they can't convince me most of
the time. "Sham Of Perfection", i don't no why but they're different. Crystal clear, controlled
and passionate voice of Laura makes the difference to me. They also have a second (male)
singer in the band who takes the more deeper / aggressive vocal lines for his account.
There's a great structure to announce and check out the amazing, melodic guitar duties.
The rhytms, the solo's, the breaks...name it and you'll get it. Very nice atmospheres (The
Gathering lingers on) and the album is loaded with numerous tempo changings able to take
your breath away.
Final conclusion: not a pure, solid Metal thrill but i'm pretty satisfied with the result. Is this the
new wave of female fronted Metal bands? The near future shall bring the answer!

No Respect [it]
Ricordo con piacere un concerto degli allora a me sconosciuti Tystnaden, all'epoca dell’uscita
dell'EP "Fragments" (2003). In quell'occasione ebbi modo di constatare le ottime qualità live
della band, mi stupisco quindi solo relativamente di ritrovarmeli oggi al debutto internazionale
per la LMP. Le note di presentazione della label li affiancano ai Nightwish o agli Evanescence,
spero questo non costituisca per loro un limite, giacchè a mio avviso "Sham of Perfection" è
un disco dalle indubbie qualità, capace di camminare sulle proprie gambe. La voce di Laura
De Luca domina la scena e mi sento di accostarla a quella della notissima e corregionale Elisa,
piuttosto che a Cristina Scabbia o alle solite cantanti di genere. Si comincia con "First Embrace"
la cui parte centrale, in cui si alternano con grande determinazione la voce femminile ed il
growl di Lorenzo Frascaroli, è davvero coinvolgente. "Munchausen Syndrome" si muove su
territori più easy e potrebbe diventare davvero un bel singolo, addirittura non così lontano
dall’ultimissima produzione di A. Morissette (ovviamente energizzata). "Tystnaden" è ripescata
dall'EP suddetto e venitemi a dire se la voce di Laura non è a livello delle "regine" del settore.
"Methapora" è un avvincente melodic-death, mentre dolcissime note di piano danno il via
a "The Foolish Plan" ( ripescata anche questa dall'EP), pezzo davvero bello, ieri come oggi.
"Hamlet" cresce ad ogni ascolto, "The Joke" piace per la presenza di inserti electro-dark quasi
danzerecci e ancora una volta la voce mi fa sobbalzare. Ottimo il duetto vocale nella successiva
"Rewards" e chiusura con "The Vanishing" e "Pride vs Intellect" songs che confermano tutto
quanto sentito finora, divise tra delicate melodie e attacchi metal. La raffinata immagine di
copertina scelta ben si sposa con l'atmosfera generale e trovo tutto sommato anche più adatto
il nuovo logo rispetto a quello "estremo" di qualche anno fa. Quello che intendo dire è che qui
tutto è stato curato nei minimi dettagli. La produzione, manco a dirlo, è impeccabile (la regia
di Luigi Stefanini vale ormai più di una garanzia) e a questo punto non resta che aspettare
fiduciosi il responso del pubblico. E' difficile dare un voto ad un disco d'esordio senza avere
un precedente metro di riferimento, ma un ipotetico 8 ci sta tutto. E chissà che l'occhio lungo
di Limb Schnorr porti anche ai Tystnaden la stessa fortuna già riservata ad altre bands!

Das Wort TYSTNADEN klingt schwedisch, ist es auch und bedeutet in etwa „Stille“. Da liegt der
Verdacht nahe, das eine Band namens TYSTNADEN dann wohl auch aus Skandinavien kommen
sollte und dementsprechende eher ruhigere Töne anschlägt – tut sie aber nicht. TYSTNADEN
kommen aus dem italienischen Udine und präsentieren auf ihrem Debüt „Sham Of Perfection“
eingängigen Dark Metal mit überwiegend weiblichen Vocals und eingestreuten Death Metal
Parts. Dabei bleibt das Sextett trotz seiner Verehrung für Bands wie In Flames, Dark Tranquility
und Sentenced härtemäßig deutlich zurück. Die Zielgruppe der Band dürfte sich irgendwo
zwischen den Fans von Nightwish und Evanescence sowie ihren Landsleuten von Lacuna Coil
bewegen. Reinhören sollte man mal in die Bandhymne „Tsytnaden“, dem fast schon epischen
„The Foolish Plan“ und das zwischen derb und sanft pendelnde „The Joke“. Neben den für
ein Debüt überraschend ausgereiften Kompositionen lässt TYSTNADEN auch musikalisch
nichts anbrennen, setzt weder Keyboard noch Gitarre zu dominant ein und wertet alles mit
einer gelungenen Produktion auf. Gesanglich kann man auch Sängerin Laura De Luca nun gar
nichts vorwerfen. Nein, die Stimmlage ist richtig angenehm (nix Oper) und sie packt gut den
Spagat zwischen einfühlsameren und härteren Passagen. Aber trotz aller Sympathiepunkte
für einen netten Akzent – in diesem Business sollte man dringend noch an der Aussprache
feilen. Hier darf noch nachgearbeitet werden. Ansonsten haben TYSTNADEN bereits mit ihrem
Erstling Beachtung verdient. Freunde melancholisch harter Töne mit Frauenstimme und Fans
aufgeführter Bands sollten den Newcomer ruhig antesten, denn die abwechslungsreichen
Kompositionen auf „Sham Of Perfection“ machen Spaß und lassen einiges erwarten.

Sometimes you just gotta take one for the team and review an album that is in a style that
does not exist in most of the crewmembers' record collection. And sometimes you take one
that does absolutely not fit with your own musical preferences. Like this one.
Italy's Tystnaden make something interesting though. A combination of clean female vocals
(by a very pretty lady might I add) and mildly deep male screams to start of with, joined by
easy listening rock and heavy metal with some (very good produced) synths all worked out
with a great feel for songwriting. If this sounds like your interests you should definitely give
this a spin.
Now don't mistake female vocals with gothic stuff, because this is certainly not your average
high-soaring soprano infested keyboard gay metal band. It does have a slight gothic touch
over it though, but it is not meant to be emphasized and I thank them for that. But that touch
is also more caused by the synths than by the vocals, so she's not to blame.
The music is just plain hard rock and heavy metal, with a better production than they had
back in the days when mentioning those two genre's was still hip, and men had long hair for
a reason. It all sounds very smooth and enchanting to be honest, with the brutality mainly
hidden in the bass drum.
The songwriting is really good on this record. The songs all make sense and variety is also
highly present on this disc, which makes it even more pleasant to listen to. For fans of female
vocals (which I'm not, unfortunately) with a weakness for mild brutality this is something to
look out for.

Tystnaden is Swedish for "the silence", but we are dealing here with an Italian band of the
environs of Udine. That immediately made me think of Elvenking and there is a link indeed.
Female singer Laura De Luca happened to be the one who did some guest vocals on the first
Elvenking album 'Heathenreel'. Why a Swedish name for the band? That is because of their
admiration for Swedish bands such as Dark Tranquillity and In Flames.
'Sham Of Perfection' is the first full length album of Tystnaden, in succession of the EP
'Fragments' of 2003. This EP was recorded in a familiar sounding studio, namely the Outer
Sound studio in Rome and now that I have been busy writing about Novembre, I promptly
remember that this is the studio of the members of Novembre. However this album is recorded
at the New Sin studio (January 2005), after which the band signed a deal with Limb Music and
now they are ready to conquer the world.
One should expect a lot of Gothenburg influences, but that is not the case. Tystnaden is
much more another band in the gothic metal scene, with large amounts of female vocals and
a refreshing grunt of keyboardist Lorenzo Frascaroli. They more than once reminded me of
Sengir. I know, there are no grunts in Sengir, but Laura has a similar voice timbre as Ellen,
clean and powerful and useful in every style. Some of the songs are a bit (too) light stuff, so
that this album will appeal to a large number of people, but the compositions themselves are
not that exceptional. Sometimes I lost my attention and this cannot be the purpose. In the
song 'Rewards' we hear a beautiful guitar solo of guest musician Gianni Rojatti (Deep Forest
with among others Greg Bissonnette). A meritorious debut album, which sounds a bit too
mainstream for me, but hey, gothic fans, check it out.

Een Zweedse naam voor een Italiaanse band. Ja, dat kan. Hoewel het op het eerste gezicht
nogal misleidend is, want bij een Zweedse naam verwacht je toch al gauw een bepaald type
band. Zeker als het in het power/heavy metal genre blijkt te vallen. Tystnaden is eerder een
combinatie van heavy en gothic metal, die nog het meest doet denken aan een mix van
Nightwish en Lacuna Coil. Tystnaden betekent zoiets als ‘stil’ en ‘rustig’ en vanwege grote
bewondering voor Scandinavische metal heeft het Italiaanse zestal voor deze bandnaam
gekozen.
Sham of Perfection is het debuutalbum van de band en voor een eerste plaat klinkt het absoluut
niet slecht. Laura De Luca is een zeer getalenteerde zangeres, hoewel haar stem hier en daar
nog iets bijgeschaafd mag worden. Nog steeds is het een trend om metal te combineren
met vrouwenzang en ik kan bijna zeggen dat negen van de tien keer het geen geslaagde
combinatie is. Veel zangeressen beschikken op z’n zachts gezegd over weinig talent en de
vocalen uiten zich dan ook veelal in nodeloos gekweel. Gelukkig is dit voor Tystnaden wel
anders. Laura De Luca heeft een stevige, originele stem met veel power die de muziek juist
ten goede komt.
Sham of Perfection is een krachtig debuutalbum en na een aantal luisterbeurten komt het
geheel steeds evenwichtiger over. Voor fans van Nightwish en Lacuna Coil zeker de moeite
van het checken waard. Gelukkig is het geen regelrechte kloon van net genoemde bands,
Tystnaden beschikt absoluut over zijn eigen sound.
De stevige opener First Embrace wordt afgewisseld met het wat gevoeliger Tystnaden. Onder
de sterke nummers horen ook het epische Hamlet en het emotionele Pride vs. Intellect.
Keyboardsounds, dan weer stevige grunts, rustige intermezzo’s, prima gitaarwerk en
bombastische stukken wisselen elkaar af.
Tussen de grote lading zeer slechte gothicplaten sijpelt af en toe ook nog eens een goede door.
Hoewel de muziek en de vocalen her en der nog net even wat meer bijgeslepen mogen worden,
is Sham of Perfection een album wat veel liefhebbers absoluut zullen gaan waarderen.

Tystnaden were formed back in 1999 and till now they had released one demo (Tystnaden
2000) and one mini CD (Fragments 2003). Lately they signed a contract with LMP so here they
are with their debut album "Sham Of Perfection". Although their name is a Swedish word, they
are from Italy. They chose a Swedish name because of their love to bands like Dark Tranquility,
In Flames and Sentenced.
In their first steps Tystnaden were trying to sound like the bands they like having death
metal vocals accompanied by female vocals, but as the years were passing by, Laura De Luca
became the main vocalist of the band, giving it a gothic aura like After Forever. This wasn't the
only change they made. The keyboardist Lorenzo Frascaroli joined the band and as a result
Tystnaden became more melodic (you can't get rid of your roots easily and Italy is a country
with a tradition to melodic metal bands). So if you combine all these we have a melodic/
power/gothic metal band with female vocals accompanied by death metal vocals (by Lorenzo
Frascaroli).
"Sham Of Perfection" is a great album. It has elements of many different kinds of music.
Tystnaden manage to mix all their influences in one album without copying anyone. All the
songs differ between them and from the beginning to the end of the album there is something
of interest in every song. The production is excellent; you can easily compare it with the
productions of well known metal groups. So we have great musicians, well written songs and
an excellent production. Highlights of the album are: "First Embrace", "Munchausen Syndrome"
and "The Vanishing".
This is one of the best debut albums I have heard for years. If they continue this way I am sure
that in the next few years they will become very famous in metal community. Well done guys
(and girl(s) :p).

Quando le apparenze ingannano.
Ricordo ancora quando nel 2000 ricevetti il promo autoprodotto di due brani dei Tystnaden da
recensire per una piccola fanzine: rimasi sorpreso dalla professionalità e dalla realizzazione
estremamente curata del prodotto, oltre che dalle doti esecutive del gruppo. In un periodo in
cui il gothic-metal alla Evanescence/Lacuna Coil era ancora un genere di nicchia, la proposta
di questi ragazzi destava un certo interesse, soprattutto per il fatto che anche in Italia ci fosse
una concreta apertura verso tale forma di metal.
A distanza di sei anni, e dopo un mini CD di quattro pezzi ("Fragments" del 2003), esce
"Sham of perfection", debutto ufficiale per una label di una certa importanza e qui nasce il
problema maggiore: lo stile proposto dai Tystnaden si mantiene sulla linea degli esordi ma
in un contesto ormai inflazionato a causa di un genere che ha fatto moda. Pertanto, la band
capeggiata dalla bravissima Laura De Luca rischia seriamente di finire nel dimenticatoio prima
ancora di muovere i primi passi in una dimensione professionalmente più evoluta. Ma… c’è un
"ma", e si chiama "risultato finale". Sì, perché "Sham of perfection" è suonato talmente bene,
interpretato con tale cipiglio e prodotto in modo così cristallino che non ha assolutamente
nulla da invidiare alle migliori performance dei capiscuola italici Lacuna Coil.
Anzi, a costo di diventare impopolare, aggiungo che le varie "First embrace", "Munchausen
syndrome" (dotata di arrangiamenti da urlo) e "Tystnaden" (suadente semi-ballad condita da
suggestivi inserti di violino alternati a riffs chitarristici corposi per merito di Cesare Codispoti
e Federico Grassi) sono canzoni che mostrano generalmente una costruzione più articolata
e accattivante di quella dei brani del recente "Karmacode". Ho citato solamente tre songs,
ma potrei continuare sottolineando gli arrangiamenti curati di "The foolish plan", oppure i
raffinati inserti elettronici su un tappeto ritmico estremamente dinamico costruito da Marco
Di Castri al basso e Alberto Iezzi alla batteria in "The Joke" (potrebbe piacere ai Daemonia di
Claudio Simonetti, ci scommetto).
Ribadendo le notevoli qualità canore di Laura De Luca, dotata di una voce pulita e versatile
come poche, non posso far altro che spingervi a vincere le riserve che il genere a cui fanno
capo i Tystnaden potrebbe creare e ad avvicinarvi a questo lavoro solamente con la voglia di
ascoltare un gruppo che merita la giusta attenzione.

I Tystnaden sono un giovane combo al debutto, autore di un metal che, seppur debitore
della scena death svedese e fortemente influenzato dal gothic nostrano, riesce ad essere
fresco e personale. Dopo qualche anno passato nell'underground a farsi le ossa, ricevendo
ottimi feedback dagli adetti ai lavori e dal pubblico, eccoli giungere al debutto con "Sham of
Perfection". Un album prodotto dalla Limb Music Products di proprietà di Limb Schnoor, uno
che sa scovare talenti in giro per l'Europa come pochi; dopo aver avviato infatti le carriere di
Rhapsody, Mob Rules e Vanishing Point eccolo alle prese con questa nuova scommessa!
La giovane band friulana (già, nonostante il nome che può far pensare diversamente, i
Tystnaden sono nostri connazionali) si presenta compatta e piena di spunti interessanti. I
Nostri sanno amalgamare benissimo le varie correnti che scorrono all'interno della band :
si trovano infatti richiami ai Dark Tranquillity così come ai Lacuna Coil, il tutto condito da
innesti elettronici tanto in voga ultimamente. A livello di songwriting i Tystnaden dimostrano
già una maturità pienamente acquisita, basta ascoltare ad esempio la loro canzone omonima
o "The Foolish Plan". Interessanti i richiami prog dell'opener "First Embrace", così come gli
elementi cyber-metal di "Hamlet" e "The Joke", ma il picco si tocca sicuramente con l'ottima
"Münehausen Syndrome", valorizzata da delle cavalcate improvvise sulle quali le voci di Laura
De Luca e di Lorenzo Frascaroli si incontrano e si scontrano dando vita ad un turbinio di
emozioni senza fine.
Una produzione eccessivamente futurista rende però il lavoro alquanto freddo e distante,
soprattutto non fa amalgamare appieno la valida voce della De Luca con il resto della band.
Sembra infatti che la voce e gli strumenti viaggino su due binari paralleli senza mai trovare
un punto d'incontro, tanto che i momenti più "vivi" dell'album a mio avviso sono quelli con il
cantato in growl. Un vero peccato, calcolando che il lavoro dei Tystnaden risulta estremamente
interessante, anche se necessita di molteplici ascolti per essere capito in fondo (minimo tre).
Bella prova della band, che sono davvero curiso di vedere all'opera dal vivo!

Vanishing Butterflies [it]
L'apparente quiete riscontrabile nel termine Tystnaden e nella copertina di Travis Smith
non inganni. 'Sham Of Perfection' è infatti il risultato dell’intelligente fusione tra influenze
molteplici rilette con passione e personalità non indifferente visto che trattasi di una band
all'esordio. La matrice di base è evidentemente debitrice dei capolavori regalati dal death
melodico scandinavo in questi anni. Soprattutto Dark Tranquillity e primi In Flames fanno la
loro comparsa nei tessuti chitarristici e nelle parti percussive che danno modo alla bella voce di
Laura De Luca di spostare i confini sonori dei Tystnaden verso il recente successo discografico
di gruppi come Nightwish e Within Temptation. Quello che colpisce immediatamente è
l'ottima produzione e la disinvoltura con la quale la band si presenta esplorando situazioni
atmosferiche e strutture armoniche sempre diverse e intriganti. Gli esempi più fulgidi senza
dubbio 'Tystnaden', 'Metaphora' e 'The Vanishing'.

Vom eigentlich auf True und Power Metal spezialisierten norddeutschen Label kommt nun auch
italienischer Melodic Dark Metal mit engelsgleicher Frauenstimme. Und das klingt für mich,
wie sich eine ehemalige Power Metal-Band den Gothic Metal vorstellt. Ein Mix aus angenehmen
weiblichen und gegrölten männlichen Vocals, dezente Melodien in Moll, ein möglichst
episch aufbrechender Chorus und dynamische Wechsel in den Songs zwischen ruhiger und
fetter gerifft. Das ist so ziemlich alles im 4:48 Minuten dauernden Opener ‚First Embrace’
ausgedrückt. Ganz frühe Lacuna Coil treffen auf benebelte Sentenced und hilfsbereite Within
Temptation (‚Rewards’). Natürlich zieht das Label gleich die großen Parallelen zu Evanescence
(denen Sängerin Laura tatsächlich leicht ähnelt) und Nightwish (der Keyboarder wäre in der
Tat gerne ein Tastenderwisch wie Tuomas H.), aber nachdem Papier geduldig ist, müssen
solche Vergleiche noch ein oder drei Alben warten, bis sie wirklich zutreffen. Aber bleiben wir
ne Idee fair. Ein paar okaye Düsterrock-Songs sind TYSTNADEN gelungen (der Opener, das
leichtes 80er Flair versprühende ‚The Joke’, sowie der Rausschmeißer‚ Pride Vs. Intellect’), die
große Karriere stemmen die Italiener auf dem Hamburger Label aber nicht. Vielleicht können
sich ja TYSTNADEN mit dem HSV zusammen tun, denn die müssen auch noch lernen….

Although the bandname suggests a Swedish lineage (translatesas 'silence'), this sextet is
really an Italian band (from Udine). Formed in 1998 from the remains of Thrash Metal band
Assault, when (rhythm) guitarist Cesare Codispoti, bassist Marco Di Castri and drummer Nestor
Borgo decided to grow as musicians. Influenced by such Swedish Death Metal bands as Dark
Tranquillity, In Flames, and Sentenced, they were joined first by the unexperienced (as far as
playing in bands goes) young guitarist Federico Grassi...later by singer Giovanni Garimoldi,
who would also handle some flute. A year later, Laura De Luca was included into the line-up,
originally to contrast Giovanni's growled vocals. This line-up records their self-titled 2-track
demo cdR in May 2000, which gets them plenty of critical acclaim. Soon after however, the
singer and the drummer are forced to leave the band (for non-musical reasons, by the way).
The band being forced to pick new members, first finds the perfect accomplice in drummer
Alberto Iezzi, then completes the line-up with the addition of keyboardist Lorenzo Frascaroli,
who was also to take on the growled vocals. Meanwhile Laura had shifted in the line-up from
being the backing singer, to being the lead singer (she also helped out Elvenking on their
"Heathenreel" album of 2001), and it's in that constellation that the band records their 4-track
mini-CD "Fragments" in May of 2003.
In early 2005, the band finishes recording 10 tracks (with "Tystnaden" and "The Foolish Plan"
re-recorded versions that also appeared on the "Fragments" demo) and, tired of waiting around
for a label, starts putting the songs on the internet from June of the same year. Finally, LMP
picked up with the guys (and doll) earlier this year and signed 'em in late April for a release
of the album in late May.
Stylistically, the band is categorised in the 'Melodic Dark Metal' genre '...with angelic
female vocals'! The combination of the mixed voices and the similar musical orientation to
Scandinavian bands of the Gothic Death kind, is said to be sure to enthrall fans of Nightwish
and Evanescence, as well as fans of Progressive or heavier kinds of Heavy Metal. Well, there's
certainly an interesting complexity to the very melodic music, but where the first comparison
is concerned, I have to inform you that Laura is nót that kind of angelic singer, and misses
Tarja's opera influence. Still, she delivers admirably, both in a more energetic mode (check
out the bombastic album opener "First Embrace"), as in a somewhat calmer one (listen to the
band's hymn "Tystnaden" with its balladesque opening, and the calmer bit of "Metaphora").
Every now and then, Lorenzo still doés take over lead vocals...or let's say that he shares the
lead with Laura, which increases the vocal diversity somewhat. In addition, Laura does some of
her own backing vocals (which sure will be difficult to reproduce on stage without hired help).
To enhance the Gothic feel, Lorenzo also often puts his otherwize orchestrated or atmospheric
keyboards (or synths) in piano mode (as well as doin' a couple of short synth runs), which
certainly adds another bit of beauty to the whole! The guitarists truely have grown together
as a unit, and the fact that Federico came into the band as a young man, surely helped along
in his sinergizing with Cesare. On top of which, the rhythm section is truely rock-solid with a
really great and diverse drummer, giving the rest a firm basis to work on.
In other words, a 10-track album well worth the attention of any fan of the somewhat heavier
Gothic/ Dark Metal with Progressive touch! In the genre, they're certainly one of the better
bands around!

Disintegration [it]
Finalmente i friulani Tystnaden giungono all'agognato debut discografico dopo la solita
gavetta fatta di demo e concerti (mi ricordo di loro, se non sbaglio, su una raccolta del mitico
Psycho!). Escono sotto l'egidia della Limb Music, uno che per certe cose ha l'occhio lungo
(per chi uscì secondo voi il capolavoro "Legendary Tales" dei Rhapsody?) e anche in questo
caso ha fiutato bene! Perché i ragazzi friulani hanno messo a segno un bel colpo con questo
"Sham Of Perfection", forti di un gothic metal molto personale, nonostante il solito uso della
doppia voce maschile-femminile, in grado di attirare l'attenzione dell'ascoltatore sin da subito.
La bio li descrive un incrocio tra Nightwish ed Evanescence…come al solito non si azzecca
mai, perché dei due gruppi succitati, l'unica cosa che li può accomunare è il solo uso della
voce femminile. Per il resto lo scheletro sonoro dei Tystnaden è heavy, in quanto le ritmiche
possono a tratti sfiorare certo death melodico di Dark Tranquillità, o addirittura alcuni pattern
degli Emperor di "IX Equilibrium" come in "Rewards" o "Pride Vs Intellet". Il tutto sorretto da
tastiere finalmente intelligenti, varie e in grado di tracciare il mood del brano invece che
sembrare dei soliti tappabuchi sonori. Buono anche il lavoro di batteria, a suo agio sulle parti
più lente come sulle scariche più potenti e veloci. I Growl maschili sono sempre di contorno e
mai invadenti. Plauso invece alla bellissima lead vocalist Laura, perché invece di scimmiottare
i gorgheggi tanto cari alle sirene del genere (come fanno molte senza averne le capacità),
si è concentrata su uno stile personale, molto melodico, a tratti nervoso, di conseguenza
meritevole di maggiore attenzione. Tra i pezzi meglio riusciti da segnalare il trittico d'apertura,
con l'inserto di strumenti classici a corda e ritornelli facilmente memorizzabili. Personalmente
mi hanno ricordato un possibile incrocio tra gli ultimi Silentium, la carica degli In Flames più
melodici e l'eleganza degli Epica. Come mio solito non posso esimermi dal trovare il classico
pelo nell'uovo, ovvero che nella parte finale del lavoro le canzoni cominciano a diventare un
po’ stantie, quasi assomigliandosi l'una con l'altra. Mai cadere i questo errore, meglio un
lavoro più breve ma completo che uno allungato con l'acqua, come si suol dire. A parte questo
trascurabile neo, disco che entra nella top list dei debut del 2006, consigliatissimo! Artwork a
cura di Travis Smith, una vera opera d'arte.

A peine la fierté transalpine en matière de métal à voix féminine est-elle partie à la conquête
de l'Amérique que TYSTNADEN se rue sur le trône laissé vacant par LACUNA COIL, dont le
règne aura finalement engendré plus de déceptions que de satisfactions. TYSTNADEN, un
nom venu du nord signifiant en suédois quelque chose comme calme/silencieux et un groupe
sûr de son fait possédant déjà une forte identité après seulement deux démos (« Sham Of
Perfection » n’est que leur premier album) et montrant une décontraction toute polonaise
dans l'assimilation totalement décomplexée de ses influences.
Leurs armes? Synthés riches, samples, double voix féminine/masculine à la MOONSPELL,
double grosse caisse utilisée pour gonfler les rythmiques des guitaristes, notes fugaces
mais marquantes de violon… Si les Italiens appartiennent indéniablement à cette branche
du métal qu'on dit « Gothique à Voix Féminine », ils se démarquent par une volonté évidente
de s’en sortir par leur travail et leur talent et non par la mise en avant d'une chanteuse à la
plastique avenante. Une grande attention a donc été portée aux accompagnements afin qu'ils
se fondent parfaitement dans le moule guitare-basse-batterie qui reste la base de chaque
titre, et ce n'est qu'après plusieurs passages qu'on peut prendre la mesure de la richesse
des morceaux. Grands fans de la scène suédoise, à qui ils rendent hommage à travers leur
patronyme, les TYSTNADEN utilisent par exemple les claviers comme DARK TRANQUILLITY le
fait, avec sobriété et beaucoup d'efficacité. La qualité d'un effet spécial au cinéma, numérique
ou non, tient principalement dans le fait qu'on ne se rend pas compte que c'en est un, il en
est de même avec les claviers; quand ils s'intègrent tellement bien qu'on ne les conçoit plus
comme un élément rajouté mais comme une partie d'un tout, le pari est presque gagné pour
le groupe.
Presque, en effet, parce que c'est une chose d’écrire des chansons regorgeant de bidouillages,
encore faut-il qu'elles tiennent la route, et question de ça, « Sham Of Perfection » frise la
démonstration! Pour commencer, si vous êtes passé à côté de « First Embrace » qui ouvre
l'album dans une ambiance mêlant la froideur d’ARTROSIS et les mélodies enjouées de
LULLACRY, il y a peu de chances pour que vous ne craquiez pas pour « Münchausen Syndrome
» dont le refrain entêtant a un petit goût pop 80's, qu'on retrouvera d’ailleurs à plusieurs
reprises, qui vous fera définitivement succomber. Là encore, on peut se rendre compte du
boulot effectué par TYSTNADEN (et probablement Luigi Stefanini, qui a enregistré l'album) au
niveau des arrangements, Laura De Luca doublant sa voix d'un chant cristallin, comme sur la
plupart des autres refrains, tandis que des sons éléctro à la CREMATORY unifient l’ensemble.
Loin de se contenter de ternes vocalises haut perchées, elle utilise toutes les possibilités que
lui offrent ses cordes vocales, se montrant aussi à l'aise sur des couplets très doux que sur
des envolées lyriques où elle doit la pousser au maximum. Laura De Luca est le ciment qui
maintient l'ensemble en place et le rend si solide, un élément indispensable et envoûtant sans
qui le groupe ne tiendrait pas la route, en tout cas pas aussi bien, et qui ne tombe pas dans
le piège de la performance individuelle.
CREMATORY, LULLACRY, MOONSPELL… TYSTNADEN est un mélange de tout ça, à quoi il
faut rajouter des guitaristes n'hésitant pas à balancer des solos de guitares prog voire néo
classiques (« Rewards »), surprenants dans ce style mais sacrément efficaces! Bien sûr tout ça
est bien joli et semble-t-il bien fait me direz-vous, mais ce genre d'albums arrive par camions
entiers depuis dix ans et l'avènement de THE GATHERING… Ce qui est juste, et il n'est pas
question d'essayer de faire passer les Italiens pour les génies révolutionnaires qu'ils ne sont
pas, ils sont simplement parvenus à faire un album synthétisant les évolutions du style (du
métal sombre et romantique des débuts à la pop musclée et samplée des années 2000) en
se concentrant sur l'écriture de chansons où chacun aurait sa place, où le chant dark de
Giovanni Garimoldi ne serait pas le faire-valoir de Laura De Luca mais son complément et où
les guitares resteraient bel et bien métal.
« Sham Of Perfection » est la bouffée d'air dont avait besoin le métal à voix féminine, bien
trop occupé dernièrement à plaire au plus grand nombre. Ce premier album n'est pas exempt
de défauts, parmi lesquels une ou deux chansons dispensables, mais il fait tellement plaisir à
entendre qu'on n'y prête guère attention. Bon, j'avoue que si la ptite Laura ne chantait pas si
bien, je me serais peut-être moins emballé… mais voilà, elle déchire!!!

'First Embrace' is the debut of the Italian band Tystnaden, which is a Swedish name. I have no
idea as to why they chose a Swedish name, but I'm here to judge the music, not the name. The
first song begins very similar to Vanguard's 'Succumbra' CD, which was released last year. The
first 20 seconds contain some changes in tempo, before the first verse starts. The vocalist
truly has a beautiful voice, yet her accent annoys me quite a bit, though only in the verse
itself. The chorus is very good. Between the vocal lines we find some tunes more familiar in
industrial music, though they sound quite good with this genre as well. The diversity of the
songs itself is quite good, varying from up-tempo songs to a little slower, more melodic and
emotional songs. I remain the same way about the vocals, the voice itself is very good, though
the accent keeps annoying me. The song named after the band is quite enjoyable; it contains
a nice intro, and the atmosphere of the song is very melodic, forming towards a climax at
the end, with a heavier part. A few highlights are 'Metaphora', which is the best song on the
album, and 'The Joke', which has a great intro. All in all Tystnaden have produced a decent
album, which is sure to create a fan-base, yet its not entirely made for me to listen too.

Sham of Perfection è l'album che segna il debutto sulla lunga distanza della band italiana,
caratterizzato da un sound elegante, melodico e rabbioso allo stesso tempo.
I Tystnaden sono una band di Udine, attiva dal 2000 ed arrivata con questo Sham of Perfection
al debutto sulla lunga distanza dopo due demo autoprodotti.
Influenzati da Dark Tranquillity, In Flames e Sentenced, il loro sound ne è la logica risultante,
caratterizzato com'è dalla contrapposizione tra parti melodiche - a volte incisive altre meno
- e dalla contrapposizione tra il cantato femminile della singer Laura De Luca ed il potente
growling di Lorenzo Frascaroli.
Ecco così intrecciarsi, in un'unica soluzione, death melodico e gothic rendendo evidenti anche
le influenze più tipiche del genere appena citato, influenze che arrivano soprattutto da bands
come Evanescence e Lacuna Coil.
Il risultato è un album ben fatto, ben suonato e decisamente piacevole all'ascolto, che in tutta
la sua durata risulta più che godibile anche grazie ad un'ottimo lavoro in fase di produzione
capace di rendere il sound molto pulito e brillante.
Già il brano che introduce l'album First Embrace mostra una band capace di svariare
discretamente tra il metal più mainstream - con voce e ritornelli in pieno stile Evanescence più
malinconici - e quello leggermente più pesante della scena swedish-death, con piccole parti in
growling capaci di non relegare i Tystnaden nella stantìa scena romantic-gothic attuale.
Altri brani decisamente buoni sono Munchausen Syndrome, The Foolish Plan o Hamlet che
ripetono pressappoco a livello di struttura quanto proposto dall'opener.
Ed è proprio questo l' anello debole dell'album, caratterizzato da brani che per quanto ben
fatti e discretamente godibili presentano la pecca di assomigliarsi un pò troppo gli uni con gli
altri penalizzando in questo modo la longevità del lavoro.
Chiunque sia avvezzo a certo tipo di sonorità invece, non potrà che apprezzare in tutto e per
tutto questo Sham of Perfection.

Don't let the Swedish band name fool you. Tystnaden is a band from Italy, and the name is
inspired by all kinds of Scandinavian bands that they liked. Bands such as In Flames, Dark
tranquillity and Sentenced for example. The band was founded in 1998, and about one year
later they decided to add female vocals to the band. The two track demo 'Tystnaden' came out
in 2000, and the record was highly acclaimed by the international press. After some changes
in the line-up, Tystnaden began to write for their next record, which came out in 2003. This
MCD called 'Fragments' caught not only the attention of the international press again. This
time also Limb music Productions was interested in the band, and they soon collaborated.
In 2005 they recorded songs which would finally end up being their debut album 'Sham of
perfection.' Gothic albums nowadays are mostly choir or synthesiser orientated. Tystnaden
has all the right ingredients that defy the term Gothic metal, but they are much more metal
orientated. The sound is aggressive and the vocals are straight in your face. The female vocals
reminds me of Floor Jansen of After Forever. They have the same powerful voice. The songs
contain a lot of tempo breaks, which is good for the variation of the album. In comparison to
other similar acts, Tystnaden brings more differences within the songs. The name Nightwish
comes to mind, but also their In Flames inspiration is retraceable. I can't tell you my favourite
songs on the album, because I can't make a choice. Every song has one or more parts that I
like, and mostly all the songs are qualitative good compositions. When you see the artwork
and the band name, you expect songs of a minimum of seven minutes. This is not true. They
can write compact songs with much power in them. Tystnaden is here to stay!

Silenzio.
E' la traduzione del monicker "Tystnaden": silenzio. Bel contrasto con la musica tutt'altro che
silenziosa che la band propone, non c'è che dire.
I sei vantano già un curriculum più che dignitoso, grazie alle entusiastiche recensioni ricevute
dal loro omonimo demo e dal mini "Fragments" sulla stampa nazionale ed internazionale,
lavori che gli hanno fruttato una collaborazione con la LMP: un traguardo decisamente degno
di nota, soprattutto se si consideri la lunghissima, e spesso realmente infinita, gavetta che il
settore generalmente richiede.
La musica proposta è un Death melodico di netta ispirazione scandinava, in particolare si
riconoscono pesantissime influenze dei Dark Tranquillity del periodo tra "The Gallery" ed
"Haven". I pezzi sono estremamente orecchiabili, con sonorità dure in continua alternanza
tra aggressività e melanconia. Il duo canoro pone in prima linea la potente voce pulita di
Laura De Luca, una singer molto dotata che ricorda, in certi passaggi, Sharon den Adel dei
Within Temptation: già questo parallelo rende appieno l'idea delle capacità sfoggiate da Laura.
I backing vocals ed i controcanti affidati al growl di Lorenzo Frascaroli rendono l'impatto
generale della musica dei Tystnaden ancor più cupo e pesante, dando vita ad un carosello
di livelli comunicativi che spaziano attraverso i più disparati stati emotivi: in parole povere,
estrema evocatività e varietà.
A sorreggere il tutto, una struttura ritmica violenta (ma non eccessiva) e quadrata, senza
sbavature, creata dalle ritmiche di Iezzi con la collaborazione di Codiposti, Grassi e Di Castri,
che cooperano con un feeling estremamente ben sviluppato.
Infine le tastiere di Frascaroli, sapientemente suonate, riescono a dare profondità alla musica
senza cadere nei cliché triti e ritriti che troppo spesso fanno "inciampare" gruppi appartenenti
a questo panorama.
Il giudizio non può che essere positivo, in attesa dei prossimi lavori della band e possibilmente
di una valutazione dell'impatto scenico dal vivo; nel frattempo, l'album è assolutamente
promosso.
Cupi sogni e decadente melanconia: il silenzio attraverso la musica.

sotto le ali della rediviva Limb Music dopo aver dato alla luce due demo - "Tystnaden" nel 2000
e "Fragments" nel 2003. Quello che la band ha proposto da sempre è un death metal melodico
e gotico, sulla scia dei migliori Dark Tranquillity, impreziosito dalla bellissima voce di Laura.
Con gli anni la band ha subìto una notevole crescita che li ha portati ad affinare la proposta,
ora molto più melodica ed immediata, sempre carica di quell'aurea malinconica e gotica che li
ha sempre contraddistinti. Una canzone su tutti va a confermare quanto appena detto ovvero
la stupenda "First Embrace", song diretta e d'impatto che apre il disco nel migliore dei modi
grazie alla bellissima strofa e al ritornello di facile presa. La band si conferma brillante e
matura in canzoni come "Munchausen Syndrome", "Metaphora", "Hamlet" e "Rewards" dove i
riff trascinanti vengono accompagnati dalle ottime linee vocali interpretate e recitate da Laura
affiancata di tanto in tanto dalla voce death di Lorenzo che, senza esagerare, aggiunge qui e
là dei pezzi aggressivi che donano alle songs quel tocco in più che riavvicina il sound della
band al death melodico tipicamente scandinavo. E' in canzoni come "The Foolish Plan", "Pride
vs Intellect" o "The Joke", dove i Tystnaden lasciano spazio alla propria facciata più gotica
e introspettiva, che non trovo la stessa grinta e la stessa freschezza compositiva. Non dico
che non siano dei bei pezzi, ma in quel frangente la band non comunica la stessa forza che
invece fuoriesce in canzoni come "First Embrace". Sta di fatto che in generale il disco risulta
abbastanza compatto, fatta eccezione per qualche pezzo forse ridondante e non convincente
al cento per cento. Detto questo rimarcherei il punto di forza di questa giovane band, ovvero la
voce di Laura che è la prima cosa che si è fatta notare sin dagli esordi… personale, evocativa,
a volte graffiante, questo è sicuramente un fattore vincente per i Tystnaden, visto che ormai la
"scena femminile" è satura di voci sempre più simili fra loro (e a proposito chi ha paragonato
Laura a Tarja dei Nightwish o a Cristina dei Lacuna Coil, forse non ha ascoltato bene il disco,
perché la sua voce non assomiglia minimamente a nessuna delle due - figuriamoci a Tarja
che è una cantante lirica!!!!). In definitiva, una buona band, che forse deve ancora crescere un
po', ma che ha tutte le carte in regola per farlo alla grande, una volta capito definitivamente
il cammino da percorrere - e io consiglio caldamente di continuare sulla scia delle canzoni
che ho citato, dando ampio spazio alla versatilità di Laura, all'immediatezza e alla grinta delle
composizioni, e alla voce death utilizzata solamente nei momenti chiave, in modo che diventi
un punto di forza e non una banalità. Continuate così!

Era davvero parecchio tempo che non ascoltavo un disco di gothic metal (o, se preferite,
"melodic dark metal", come lo definisce l'etichetta che lo pubblica) così bello e coinvolgente.
Per essere sicuro che non si trattasse di una semplice "infatuazione" temporanea, piuttosto
comune all'interno di questi ambiti stilistici, mi sono sottoposto ad una serie prolungata
e ripetuta di sessioni d'ascolto ed il risultato del "test" ha visto l'effetto della dopamina
conservarsi inalterato senza flessioni e la "tentazione", giunti al termine di ogni prova, di avviare
immediatamente la successiva tramite la semplice pressione del tasto "play", manifestarsi in
una forma pressoché irresistibile.
Dopo un paio di apprezzate autoproduzioni i friulani Tystnaden arrivano dunque, con questo
prestigioso contratto discografico, a diffondere le proprie innegabili doti ad un meritato
livello di visibilità superiore e la loro musica, un metallo gotico armonico e suggestivo,
che non si dimentica mai della componente "fisica" e capace anche di lampi di derivazione
prog, nonostante l'allineamento sostanziale alle sonorità che hanno reso famosi Nightwhish,
Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Flowing Tears, Within Temptation e compagnia "metal/goticizzante",
riesce a non essere scontata o troppo "logora", risultando vincente e incredibilmente godibile
grazie alla qualità e alla vitalità delle composizioni e alle considerevoli capacità squisitamente
tecniche di tutta la band.
In questo modo, anche i contrasti tra l'eccellente voce espressiva e decisa di Laura De Luca, la
quale ha il talento e il carisma (ricordando talvolta, nell'approccio, gli organi della fonazione
della Scabbia e della prima Van Giersbergen) per sostenere tranquillamente il confronto anche
con le sue colleghe più celebri e il veemente growl di Lorenzo Frascaroli (da segnalare anche
come sufficientemente fantasioso tastierista), pur rappresentando una soluzione vocale non
esattamente "progressista", piace per l'intensità e l'affiatamento di una contesa che si mette
a disposizione di canzoni sempre brillanti, in un'illuminata promiscuità tra aggressione ed
"animata" malinconia.
L'album appare immediatamente maturo, consapevole, appassionante e brano dopo brano
intrappola l'ascoltatore in questo clima fatto di potenza e dolcezza, ma senza che questa
ultima risulti stucchevole o sia eccessivamente "eterea", evocando cocenti sentimenti di rabbia
e languore, che trascinano ed emozionano senza sosta.
"First embrace", "Münchausen syndrome", il suadente inno "Tystnaden" (violino e voce "parlano"
direttamente all'anima)” sono tre autentiche "“mazzate" di splendide sensazioni contrastanti,
"Metaphora", "The Foolish Plan" (veramente straordinaria nella sua avvincente e cangiante
costruzione), "Rewards" e "Pride vs intellect" conquistano per versatilità e strutture musicali
che uniscono impeto a melodie catalizzanti, "The joke" e "The vanishing" sanno assalire alla
maniera dei Dark Tranquillity con maggiore evidenza, ma altresì rallentare, riflettere o mutare
direzione, alimentati pure da un lieve tocco sinfonico, mentre anche una canzone leggermente
meno efficace come "Hamlet", mantiene una discreta attrattiva complessiva e non rischia
l'onta dello "skip".
Bravi veramente, questi Tystnaden, e a loro deve essere anche attribuito un pregio "epocale",
a causa del quale, d'ora in poi, sono sicuro avranno difficoltà a prendere sonno, tanto è
"smisurato" il suo significato: farmi riconciliare con un genere che in tempi recenti avevo
un po' abbandonato per le troppe delusioni e l'impressione di un eccessivo "appiattimento"
formale … e scusate se è poco! A parte gli scherzi, "Sham of perfection" è un disco che
credo abbia le capacità per accontentare tutti i fans del settore (più o meno entusiasti degli
ultimi esempi artistici proposti dal mercato) e combattere ad armi pari con chiunque decida di
operare nel medesimo "terreno".

Tystnaden — from Italy, despite the Swedish name — are a band that not many of you will
be familiar with. This is their first studio album, released just last month, and it shows an
unusually high level of songwriting skill for a debut album. They formed seven years ago,
and have released two CDs prior to this album: Tystnaden (demo, 2000) and Fragments (EP,
2003).
Marketed as "Melodic Dark Metal with Angelic female vocals," the album combines a few
different styles — from gothic metal not too dissimilar to After Forever, to melodic death
metal ala In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, with a subtle hint of well-used synths — while
managing to avoid directly imitating any bands. They pull it all off with surprising aplomb,
especially considering this is their first full album.
The vocals are of a good standard throughout. The female vocals — which feature predominantly
— are more rock-orientated than the operatic vocal style that you usually find with bands of this
type, and I have to say that it suits the music much better. You can definitely hear the band's
death metal roots in the male vocals and guitars, both of which are very Gothenburg-esque,
and are thoroughly enjoyable. The synths are never overdone, and add a unique element to
most of the songs.
For fans of gothic and/or melodic death metal, this CD is definitely worth checking out.

Che diavolo è successo ai Tystnaden? Questa band friulana la seguo fin dai loro esordi, quando
nel 2000, nel periodo del mio programma radiofonico, un giorno mi ritrovai sulla scrivania il
loro demo omonimo: 2 tracce di rabbioso swedish death metal sulla scia di Dark Tranquillity
e compagnia bella. Dopo un altro valido demo, ecco arrivare tra le mie mani, il tanto sospirato
debutto su lunga distanza. Nel frattempo le cose in casa Tystnaden si sono un po’ evolute
e "Sham of Perfection" rappresenta il frutto della maturazione della band... Abbandonate
le sonorità swedish, i sei ragazzi del nord est italiano si sono lanciati verso un sound un
po’ più commerciale, sulla scia di band più famose quali Lacuna Coil, Evanescence o After
Forever (insomma, non proprio degli sprovveduti direi). È come sempre la soave voce di Laura
a regalarci delle emozioni profonde, accompagnata ogni tanto dal growl maschile, ultimo
baluardo di un genere non ancora dimenticato e forse la cosa che stona di più in questo lavoro.
Per il resto dobbiamo dimenticarci la rabbia che contraddistinse i loro esordi, allontanare dalle
nostre menti le cavalcate alla Dark Tranquillity, le melodie di "Amok" dei Sentenced, o i riff
degli In Flames: i Tystnaden sono un’altra band, e con "Sham of Perfection" inizia una nuova
era, fatta di musica più progressiva, più ragionata, ma comunque sempre in grado di generare
interessanti suggestioni visive. Le idee dei nostri sono buone, la preparazione tecnica pure
con ottime partiture di chitarra e un buon songwriting. Gli amanti delle band succitate, ma
anche chi segue Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation e perchè no, anche The Gathering, diano
pure un ascolto a "Sham of Perfection", magari potreste rimanere folgorati e poi ragazzi,
spazio anche alle validissime e spesso bistrattate band italiane!!!

"Sham of Perfection" è il primo vero album dei Tystnaden, band italianissima (friulana) a
dispetto del nome, che non significa altro che "Silenzio" in svedese.
Il gruppo, attivo dal 1998, ha pubblicato nel 2000 il demo "Tystnaden" e il Mini Cd "Fragments"
nel 2003. Ma è fatale l'incontro con l'etichetta tedesca Limb Music, che li scrittura e che
permette al sestetto di incidere e distribuire in mezza Europa il loro primo album.
"Sham of Perfection" è un concentrato di ritmo e melodia, riconducibile ad una fusione tra il
gothic metal nostrano e il dark metal: una fusione di chitarre tostissime a melodie dolcissime,
che si cementifica con la doppia voce: quella bellissima e pulita di Laura De Luca e quella
sporca (voce growl) di Lorenzo Frascaroli.
"A roving in my brain, ending with the cleaning sunrise/ A roving in my brain.../ ...Sham of
perfection/ I live with echoes' filters/ 'cause this world is not enough for me now/ It's my sham
of perfection"sono le frasi di "The Vanishing", che contengono il titolo dell'album.
Il Cd si apre con uno dei brani di più facile presa: l'ottima "First Embrace". Un primo abbraccio
dark metal che ci fa respirare a pieni polmoni l'aria di questo disco d'esordio niente male.
Difficile non pensare ai Lacuna Coil: Laura si muove su ritmi energetici e melodici che ricordano
molto la nostra ghotic band più famosa del mondo.
Della stessa pasta è l'ottima "Munchausen Syndrome" (la "sindrome di Munchausen per
procura" è la più grave forma di ipercura per la quale il bambino è sottoposto a continui e
inutili accertamenti clinici e cure inopportune conseguenti alla convinzione errata e delirante
del genitore che il proprio figlio sia malato*), mentre si apre con violini l'omonima "Tystnaden":
il silenzio cala e tutto diventa più dolce (da notare come l'intro del brano sia molto simile a
"Drowned World/Substitute For Love" di Madonna…").
La voce potentissima di Lorenzo si esprime al massimo nella frenetica "Metaphora", in "The
Foolish Plan" e in "The Joke", dall'intro molto elettronico, che si spegne sotto i riff velenosissimi
di chitarra.
Chiude la splendida ballata agrodolce "Pride vs Intellect", meravigliosa in ogni passaggio,
dove la voce di Laura dà veramente il massimo.
In sintesi "Sham of Perfection" è un ottimo disco di esordio, e son fiero che questo gruppo di
caratura internazionale sia proprio italiano. Un disco che getta le basi ad un brillante futuro,
dove spero i Tystnaden non perdano l'ispirazione e che trovino il coraggio di osare di più,
puntando sull'eterogeneità, che ancora manca, e sulle splendide doti compositive che invece
sono ben presenti.
Per ora solo "un'idea di perfezione", che sarà ben presto raggiunta.

Laura de Luca, nicht nur der Klang dieses Namens schmiegt sich wohlwollend um das Ohr,
nein, auch die Stimme der Person, welche sich hinter diesen Lettern verbirgt, ertönte bereits
des Öfteren bei den italienischen Folk/Power Metal-Landsleuten Elvenking. Sei es nun als
Stimme des Frühlings auf ihrem 2001 erschienen Debütalbum, im Duett mit dem ehemaligen
Sänger Kleid auf "Wyrd" anno 2004 oder dieses Jahr auf "The Winter Wake" zusammen mit
dem zurückgekehrten Damnagoras im wundervollen "On the Morning Dew". Genug der langen
Vorrede, die Erwartungen an Lauras Hauptband Tystnaden, melodischen Dark Metal spielend,
waren natürlich entsprechend groß, vor allem nach der hervorragenden Demoscheibe
"Fragments"...
Und schon beim Einstiegssong "First Embrace" wird hierbei klar, dass die verehrte Laura bei
Tystnaden kraftvollere Töne anschlägt als man es meinetwegen von ihr bei den Elfenkönigen
gewohnt ist. Auch die glockenklare, druckvolle Produktion unterstützt die Durchschlagskraft
ihres angenehmen Organs, welches hin und wieder an das der Landsfrau Cristina Scabbia
(Lacuna Coil) erinnert. Am ehesten kann man Tystnaden noch mit eben diesen Mailänder
Gothic Metallern oder Beseech vergleichen, denn auch hier wird das Schöne und das BiestPrinzip bis zum Abwinken ausgeschlachtet, wobei der Herr Frascaroli, das Biest sozusagen,
wie ein Mikael Stanne zu Zeiten von "Projector" oder "Haven" (meiner Meinung nach eh die
schlechtesten DT-Alben) klingen möchte… der Italo ist nur eben nicht so gut wie Herr Stanne,
und auf die Dauer klingt der Möchtegern-growlende Keyboarder Lorenzo Frascaroli sehr
langweilend. Ein weiteres Minus sind übrigens dessen synthetische Klimpelkeyboards im
ansonsten sehr geilen Opener. Ansonsten schon mal ein positiver Ersteindruck.
Nicht ganz so fein geht es mit "Münchausen Syndrome" weiter. Ein schluchzender Schlag in
Lauras Stimme, der hin und wieder am Zeilenende auftaucht, ist ziemlich störend und klingt
eher nach Schluckauf, auch ein gerolltes "r" zieht hier nicht besonders. Und warum endet
dieser mäßige Track noch mäßiger mit einem verkappten kurzen "Shit!" aus dieser ansonsten
wahrlich goldenen Kehle? Bäh. Positivere Erlebnisse mit unorthodoxen Zwischenelementen
bilden beispielsweise dezent soundtrackartige Einsprengsel oder ein Cello-Solo im BandTiteltrack "Tystnaden", welcher übrigens wörtlich zu nehmen ist, denn das schwedische Wort
"Tystnaden" heißt zu Deutsch "Stille" und genau so beginnt der Song mit lieblich-emotionalen
Vocals der temperamentvollen Frontdame, bevor er wieder in den typisch-energetischen Stil
des Sechsers mündet. Hinzu kommt ein schön einprägsamer Refrain, und wenn deieser Song
mal nicht zur Bandhymne avanciert…
Dass die Bande aus Italien trotz aller kleinen Mängel dennoch absolut hochgreifendes Talent
besitzt, zeigt das grandiose "The Foolish Plan", welches bereits von der ersten Sekunde an eine
Gänsehaut den Rücken herunterschickt. Ja, auch bei 35°C im Schatten! Affengeiler, intensiver
Song und das mit Abstand beste Songwriting auf "Sham of Perfection". Diese Linie muss die
Band weiter verfolgen. Gleiches gilt für "The Vanishing" gegen Ende: sehr geil geschrieben!
Wenn man sich stilistisch schon nicht groß abheben kann, so muss man dieses Defizit eben
durch überzeugende, von vorn bis hinten intensive Songs ausgleichen. Leider mag das über
weiteste Strecken des Albums nicht gelingen. Speziell hinten heraus doppeln und dreifachen
sich die gleichen Ideen, die wirklich spannenden Momente werden zersungen – speziell vom
männlichen Vokalisten, aber auch von Laura, die manchmal etwas krampfhaft energiegeladen
sein möchte, was die Nerven etwas strapaziert – und die Melodien wollen einfach nicht mehr
hängen bleiben.
Fans von Bands wie Lacuna Coil, Theatre of Tragedy, sanfteren Dark Tranquillity oder Beseech
werden hier trotzdem ihre Freude haben. Horcht am besten mal auf der offiziellen Bandseite
in die Demosongs rein. Nebenbei bemerkt finde ich die letzte Demoscheibe "Fragments" sogar
gelungener als "Sham of Perfection"… hier wollte man irgendwie doch zu viel und ist an sich
selbst gescheitert. So hart es auch klingen mag: Frascaroli ist das große Minus, sowohl im
Gesang als auch mit seinen Keys. Das sollte man ändern. Ansonsten sieht die Zukunft dieser
Italiener aber doch ganz rosig aus.

Qualche anno fa mi era capitato sottomano "Fragments", un interessante demo degli udinesi
Tystnaden che avevo apprezzato e che mi era parso promettente... a quanto pare ci avevo
visto giusto! La band ha infatti pubblicato da poco "Sham of perfection", buon lavoro di
debutto uscito per la Limb (anche se le note dicono che l'album è stato registrato nel gennaio
del 2005, quindi immagino che nel frattempo la band sia cresciuta ancora). Le 10 tracce
presenti in questo disco migliorano quanto proposto nel demo, continuando sulla scia di
quel gothic molto vigoroso ed energico che già era stato abbozzato. Il risultato è un lavoro
abbastanza personale e fresco, anche se va detto che le ispirazioni sono abbastanza chiare
(certi Dark Tranquillity e certi Sentenced, per esempio, fanno ogni tanto capolino tra i solchi
del disco). Va comunque sottolineato quanto l'elemento principale che distingue i Tystnaden
da tante altre band che affollano la scena gothic sia senza dubbio la voce di Laura, potente ed
energica, lontana dai classici standard "angelicati" ormai diventati un po' manieristici. Anche
la parte musicale segue però questa direzione, dimostrandosi sempre piuttosto energica e
"materiale", in contrapposizione alle velleità "eteree" di tanto gothic. Altro segno distintivo
del lavoro è un buon uso dell'elettronica, che viene inserita bene nel sound ed arricchisce la
proposta musicale (a questo proposito vanno fatti i complimenti al tastierista Lorenzo, che
inoltre è anche autore dei growl, pure loro ben dosati ed inseriti nel contesto delle canzoni).
Va segnalato inoltre quanto il livello medio dei brani sia piuttosto omogeneo, anche se sul
finale appare qualche lieve cedimento (posso comunque citare "First embrace", "Metaphora" e
"The joke" come brani che si fanno notare di più ai primi ascolti).
"Sham of perfection" risulta quindi un debutto interessante che dovrebbe piacere agli
appassionati del gothic in cerca di qualcosa che si discosti un po' dai classici canoni del
genere, inoltre fa sempre piacere avere in patria una band capace di divertire l'ascoltatore. E
se la Limb ha già lanciato i Rhapsody chissà, magari sempre in Friuli ha trovato un'altra gallina
dalle uova d'oro...

Tystnaden... Ou Silence en Suèdois… Mais nous sommes bien chez un groupe transalpin,
qui prit forme du coté D'Udine, en plein Coeur de l'Italie. Après deux démo mélangeant du
Death Metal Mélodique (le groupe revendique une affiliation à In Flames et Dark Trankility)
et du Dark Metal un poil Gothique, Tystnaden gagne les faveurs de LMP et sort, en 2006 son
premier album, "sobrement" intitulé Sham Of Perfection.
Du Death il ne reste plus grand-chose, c'est la première remarque qui se fait à l'écoute de ce
disque qui privilégie amplement le coté symphonique, avec, en sus d'une belle voix féminine,
Mandoline, violon, et autre instruments proférant au disque un coté épique indéniable. Sinon
l'ambiance se situe non loin d'un Lacuna Coil (pour le chant alterné et les rythmiques), et
c'est là le plus gros défaut de ce disque. Rien de vraiment nouveau sous le soleil, Tystnaden
s'engouffre dans une branche surembouteillé et se voit donc contraint à rester dans l'ombre
des cadors du genre. Pourtant il est indéniable que l'album présente des qualités.
En effet le groupe réussi tout de même à proposer des choses personnelles: Les compositions
sont fouillés, Claviers par ci, violon par là, Tystnaden ne cherche pas à faire dans la redite,
Osant même la Pop sous son plus simple appareil sur l'éponyme Tystnaden. First Embrace et
The Vanishing aparaissent certe comme des morceaux faciles qui ne restent pas longtemps
en mémoire mais Münchausen Syndrome quant à lui est une vraie réussite. Plaintif, maîtrisé,
il s'excite sur la fin (on croirait tout de même entendre un peu le riff de Toxicity de System…)
et laisse un réel gout de bonheur dans la bouche de l'auditeur.
C'est aussi le cas de Hamlet, à la rythmique solide, qui passe décidement vraiment bien.
Le chant alterné propose des backing vocals Gutturaux (des restes des influs Death !!) qui
se marient plutôt bien à la voix de Laura De Luca et le plaisir est au rendez vous. Mais
c'est définitivement Metaphora qui fait battre mon cœur, intro électro, gros riff et double
pédale en soutien, ce morceau met la pêche: Couplet gutturaux, refrain chanté, carrément
mélodique et accrocheur (pas loin d'un Metalcore d'ailleurs) ce titre est un vrai bonheur pour
les esgourdes. Pont plus calme, gros passage mélodiques, puis cavalcade, le tout servit sur
nappes de clavier, voilà un menu riche et varié qui saura rassasier les appétits d'ogres comme
ceux des princesses.
Passe le reste de l'album, quelques sursauts sur Rewards et Pride Vs Intellect clôt l'album avec
force est mélodie.
Quelques doutes me viennent à l'esprit… Sommes nous en présence d'un très bon groupe
de Metal qui aurait sacrifié une bonne partie de sa richesse musicale pour entrer dans le
moule des groupes à Chanteuse? Le contraire n'est pas évident et ce sentiment m'embête
beaucoup… Attendons patiemment le prochain opus des Italiens en espérant qu'ils auront
tranché, et en faveur d'un son plus "vrai".

Tient tient voilà un disque de gothique a chant féminin additionné de chant death. Ca faisait
bien longtemps que nous n’en avions pas eu le droit a un petit remake. En effet de vraiment
intéressant dans le genre, il n’y avait plus grand-chose à se mettre sous la dent. Heureusement
Tystnaden est la pour nous remettre un peu de baume au cœur.
Car si le genre a été largement éclusé dans les années 90, il n’est jamais vraiment facile de
sortir un opus de ce genre. Alors même si la concurrence est rude, le groupe nous offre un
disque a la fois frais et dynamique. Le péché mignon de certains groupes étant la mélancolie,
Tystnaden nous propose avec Sham Of Perfection un disque plutôt optimiste et enjoué. Le
chant féminin n’est pas celui de Liv Kristine mais il n’est pas en reste pour autant. Il est teinté
de jeunesse et de fraîcheur, donnant ainsi une bonne dose d’énergie à la musique. Le chant
death est parsemé à bon escient tout au long des compos. Il se trouve même relégué en cœur
sur certains morceaux plus calme.
La musique est à mi chemin entre le gothique classique et du heavy. Ce mélange se traduit
par des compos parfois aéré, parfois plus pesante avec quelque envolé guitaristique digne de
Luca Turilli. Très agréable…
Rafraîchissant en cette période estivale, ce disque à le mérite d’être honnête avec son auditeur,
ce qui est finalement assez rare.

Many Italian bands tend to be rather specific when describing themselves and their style
of play –- icon band Rhapsody's Epic Symphonic Hollywood Metal being the most notable.
Tystnaden are no different, and claim to present Melodic Dark Metal With Angelic Female
Vocals –- a spot on description, and one that will probably stick in an increasing amount of
Metalheads' skull interiors after hearing their 2006 full-length debut, Sham of Perfection.
A listener's first embrace of the disc ... well, "First Embrace," reveals a dark and gloomy
atmosphere, bearing clear resemblances to a band like Evergrey, proving that the obvious ties
this band has to Sweden (their name even translates literally as "the quietness" in Swedish and
the band lists their main influences as Dark Tranquility, In Flames, and Sentenced). The next
track bears the interesting monicker "Münchhausen Syndrome," and is nothing but powerful
joy -– a fantastic vocal melody and chorus where Laura De Lucas frolicks and shines. Her voice
is powerful and filled with emotion, making a nice impact to the dark, uncompromising sound
of the rest of the band.
One of the album's winner tracks is "Tystnaden" itself. When naming a track after the band,
bands usually prefer it to be something special, describing, and thoroughly likeable, and this
one is every one of those descriptions through and through –- a mellow number, it succeeds in
sounding completely independent and fully original. From the beautiful cello introduction and
interlude, to atmospheric keyboards, to some very nice vocal melodies and a good chorus.
If sounding remotely like anything, the mood brings back memories of the Norwegian Prog
prodigy Conception's eerie moments.
"Metaphora" is a return to the world of today (some modernized elements spewed from the
fingers of Lorenzo Frascaroli) and its darkness (catchy at that) before nostalgia and blinding
musicality once again take a step forward. The terrific piano intro of "The Foolish Plan," the
definite peak of the album, delivers a track packed with great vocal work from both singers,
groovy riffs, and yet another great chorus, making a downward turn inevitable. By no means
being a bad song, «Hamlet» doesn't have what it takes to maintain the high level of the album
demonstrated thus far. It lacks the deep imagination of the previous tracks, and stands out
as the closest the band has been to standard Metal -– the vocal "duel" between De Lucas and
Frascaroli (reminiscent of Nightwish's "Kinslayer") is nicely done, though.
Luckily, this wee disappointment is wiffed away almost instantly after when "The Joke" kicks
in. This song is no such thing, but an impressive Metal number exhibiting some great musical
work from the entire band, sounding extremely homogenic and self-confident. Same goes
for "Rewards," another groovy piece where the guitarists get the chance to roam around for
a while, and they sound utterly comfortable. There is preciously little guitarist ogling within
this album; the melodies and atmospheres being the prioritized items, but yet enough for the
public to recognize Federico Grossi and Cesare Codispoti as talented musicians.
Another intriguing intro is presented to start "The Vanishing" (these guys really know how to get
the listener's attention); a song bearing much of the same characteristics as the aforementioned
"band hymn." The ending chapter, "Pride vs. Intellect," stands out as a compilation of all the
great parts of the album -– another great piano intro, more lovely vocal melodies, more nice
guitar riffing, and the sincillating rhythms courtesy of drummer Alberto Jezzi makes a worthy
finish for an album packed with passion and panache.
Tystnaden are a highly competent ensemble. There are no clear instrumental chieftains stealing
all the glory, but instead an extremely homogenic and well-rehearsed crew of communicative
musicians. They've had since 1998 to develop this degree of familiarity (with a few notable
replacements and additions along the way); but still, the years have made this band mold and
given them a great musical understanding. Each member plays an equally important role in
the band, with one exception -- Laura De Lucas' soaring vocal lines are simply essential to
the band's distinctive sound. While Lorenzo Frascaroli's accomplished growling provides a
nice counterweight, the two vocalists represent polar opposites and thus bring completely
different moods to the scene. The clean style of De Lucas suits the band's melodic alibi ... an
alibi that deserves recognition. If they avoid any meaningless turns along the way, everything
implies that these guys will be able to reach true Perfection. There's nothing to be ashamed
of here, that's for sure.

Silent Scream [it]
Bisognerebbe iniziare a pensare ad una nuova “etichetta” (scusate l'enciclopedismo tipico di
ogni scribacchino musicale in erba) che riesca a racchiudere con una maggiore precisione band
che dai territori cari a gruppi come Lacuna Coil, Nightwish (poi qualcuno mi spieghi perché
piacciono così tanto in giro...bah…) et similia partono per “imbrattarsi” le mani con umori
tipici del melodic death svedese e ritmiche che possiedono parte del rigore del progressive
metal. I friulani Tystnaden rientrano a pieno diritto nella categoria appena descritta e, perché
no, potrebbero anche farsi vessilliferi di un tale “movimento” stilistico. Dotati di una penna
agile che si sa destreggiare tra diverse zone del metal, imprimono la propria personalità ad
un sound decadente sì, ma non eccessivamente. Proprio come nei connazionali Lacuna Coil, a
prendere le redini è la limpida voce della singer Laura De Luca, mentre le incursioni in growl del
tastierista Lorenzo Frascaroli appaiono più come semplice ornamento. Le linee di chitarra, in
alcuni frangenti, sembrano voler riecheggiare le isterie dei System Of A Down, ma rimangono
pressoché orientate verso sonorità metalliche più tradizionali, con cenni di NWOBHM su alcune
accelerazioni. Ogni brano gode di una certa qualità in sede di composizione ed altrettanta
nell'arrangiamento, con frequenti ma mai invasivi strati di tastiera ad arricchirli verticalmente.
Belle melodie vengono intagliate per “The Foolish Plan”, “Tystnaden” e “Pride Vs Intellect” o
negli accattivanti refrain di “ First Embrace” e “Munchausen Syndrome”, canzoni che, secondo
chi scrive, si elevano più delle altre in un album che senza alcun dubbio sta al di sopra della
media di molte uscite affini.

Tystnaden is the Italian answer to bands like Nightwish and Evanesence, although their cd
debut definitely sounds more powerful, maybe more like After Forever. Their name was
inspired by Scandinavian bands, and is Swedish for "Quiet". However, there's absolutely
nothing quiet about Tystnaden. Their songs thrive on bombastic, complex compositions,
mixed with floating atmospheres. This album is going to be embraced by gothic and darkmetal fans, but everyone who listens to heavy progressive metal will also find some real gems
on this cd. Heavy pieces of doom, hard growls, powerful guitars, keyboards and clear female
vocals are constantly being alternated. Typical for this album is Laura De Luca's voice, forming
a nice contrast with Lorenzo's grunts, and giving their sound a refreshing edge. Alongside
Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Laura is probably one of the best female vocalists of Italy! Her
voice is more than a simple soprano, sounding a lot more original than most.
"First Embrace" is a powerful opener for the album. Along with "Munchousen Syndrome" and
the more sensitive "Tystnaden", there seems to be an immediate link with other commercial
gothic bands. The two latter songs are the first highlights of this record. "Metaphora" is yet
another different type of song. Up until now, we have four completely different songs, but
they all have that typical sound that seems to define Tystnaden's sound. "The Foolish Plan"
has something fragile, while the heavy, dark song "Hamlet" is one of my favourites on this cd.
"The Joke" and "Rewards" are both more commercial songs. The album ends with two strong
compositions. "The Vanishing" is full of variation, while "Pride vs Intellect" almost literally
blows you away.
Tystnaden definitely has it’s own sound, bringing something interesting in each and every
song on "Sham Of Perfection". This production comes highly recommended for everyone who
likes a dark, brutal atmosphere, combined with crisp female vocals.

I still don't get, why bands take names from completely different languages, latest example
are Italian TYSTNADEN, who took up the Swedish word for "the silence", why ever. Now if you
use the words Gothic Metal and Italy in the same sentence, you are bound to think of LACUNA
COIL, but even though the Udinese band has a female singer in Laura De Luca, you cannot
really dump both bands in the same spot.
The main reason for this is hat TYSTNADEN are a good bit heavier and also vocally are more
powerful, the Death Metal voice of keyboarder Lorenzo Frascaroli is taking care of that, so
they show that they are trying not to be pressed into a certain shape. And also potential
NIGHTWISH comparisons will be suffocated from the get-go, as Laura does not have a soprano
either, but operates in a bit easier digestible pitches.
What also strikes with the Italians is the at times pretty prominent keyboard, which to some
might bet he deciding factor, especially if they really pack a lot of it into the song, as on
"Metaphora" or "The Joke", which almost sound like Euro Techno, so some might have their
problems with this particular element. But thankfully the guitars keep up a good level of
heaviness, which more than makes up for that. As typical for Gothic Metal they only rarely
speed things up (only "The Foolish Plan" and "Rewards" rev it up a bit), but usually remains
mid- to slow-paced, which fits the music, just like the melancholic melodies and Laura’s soft
voice, which usually stays in control, only every now and then getting accentuated by Lorenzo’s
harsh counterpart.
On some songs they also add some genre-foreign instruments, mandolin, violin (or cello, hard
to say), which is always a plus. The strongest tracks are opener "First Embrace", "Münchausen
Syndrome", "The Foolish Plan", "The Joke" and "Pride Vs Intellect", with the rest not being fillers
either, but very nicely flowing into your ear.
Surely not a milestone in Gothic Metal, but definitely a good and entertaining debut, which
gives hopes that on a second album they won’t discover the electronics in favour of reducing
the Metal, like so many genre colleagues…

Madonna che disco ragazzi! Certo questo disco è stato realizzato da un gruppo del nostro
amato Friuli! Vi dico questo perchè se aveste la fortuna di avere tra le mani questo cd notereste
subito la grande professionalità del prodotto. Grafica stupenda, confezione curata in tutti i
particolari e poi il cd vero e proprio... registrazione perfetta, suono pulito e una cura per gli
arrangiamenti fuori dal comune. Si sono proprio friulani!
Il gruppo è formato da: Laura De Luca (voce) - Lorenzo Frascaroli (tastiere e cantato in growl)
- Cesare Codispoti (chitarra) - Federico Grassi (chitarra) - Marco Di Castri (basso) - Alberto
Iezzi (batteria). Questi ragazzi sanno cosa vuol dire costruire un prodotto di qualità senza
per forza cadere nel già sentito. Infatti anche se il genere proposto è un gothic-progressivo
che ben si accosta a pezzi grossi del genere tipo Evanescence, Nightwish oppure i nostri
Lacuna Coil, dall'altra si sente una personalità e un qualche cosa di innovativo per il genere
di per se abbastanza chiuso a contaminazioni in quanto con regole ben precise e radicate
negli ascoltatori del genere. Qualche cosa che a mio parere solo i gruppi che lasciano un
segno hanno, e a mio avviso le carte in regola per compiere questa impresa ce le hanno tutte
eccome! Altrimenti come spiegare la prima canzone del disco First Embrace, canzone che nei
suoi quasi 5 minuti di durata riassume tutto ciò che di meglio il gothic europeo e non solo ha
insegnato? Come spiegare The Joke, parti melodiche da brivido sorrette da una tastiera che
solo il miglior WARMAN dei Children Of Bodom saprebbe realizzare? Oppure Tystnaden, con
un growl veramente bestiale e la voce pulita di Laura che duellano in un allucinante conflitto
di tonalità? No no ragazzi, qui si è veramente su un altro pianeta per quanto riguarda le uscite
del settore in Friuli! Qui di ingredienti per fare la differenza da tutti gli altri gruppi ce ne a
quintali davvero! Questo disco non è solo a livello italiano ma bensì europeo, infatti sono
distribuiti in Europa dalla SPV ed hanno un contratto con Limb Music ed a meno che non
abbiate passato gli ultimi vent'anni su Saturno dovete sapere di cosa sto parlando! Un gruppo
di alto livello sotto tutti i punti di vista, tecnica, personalità, cura per il prodotto, voglia di
essere unici, grandi canzoni ed atmosfre sono tutte cose rinchiuse per sempre dentro questo
dischetto di plastica! Fatelo vostro ad ogni costo! CONTATTATE I TYSTNADEN!!!

Sham of Perfection è il debutto sulla lunga distanza di questo interessante gruppo di Udine,
autore in precedenza di due validi demo (Tystnaden – 2000 e Fragments – 2003) che riesce
con questo lavoro a firmare un contratto con un'etichetta di un certo nome, la Limb Music,
capace di garantire il giusto supporto che la proposta dei nostri merita senza ombra di dubbio,
potendo vantare doti esecutive e creatività non comuni. Queste si evidenziano grazie alla
produzione professionale ed impeccabile realizzata nei New Sin Studios ad opera di Luigi
Stefanini.
I Tystnaden aderiscono a quel genere tanto in voga negli ultimi anni, il gothic metal, che
vede nei finlandesi Nightwish e negli italiani Lacuna Coil i maestri incontrastati del genere.
Tuttavia questi 6 ragazzi udinesi non si lasciano condizionare da facili riverenze verso i gruppi
testé menzionati, riuscendo a personalizzare un genere probabilmente saturo indirizzando il
proprio sound verso lidi più propriamente heavy, sconfinando dunque verso un più articolato
melodic death e avvicinandosi più a band come Dark Tranquillity e, meno frequentemente,
Sentenced.
I clichè del genere sono ampiamente rispettati: accanto alla voce versatile e potente della bella
Laura De Luca (da tenere in considerazione per il prossimo sondaggio Miss Truemetal!), vero
asso nella manica della band essendo anche autrice di tutti i testi, annoveriamo la presenza del
cantato maschile in growl, affidato al tastierista Lorenzo Frascaroli, mai invadente e alquanto
pulito e melodico. L'anima gothic è altresì assicurata dall'inserimento di parti strumentali
poco accostabili al metal tradizionale, come ad esempio l'uso del violoncello affidato all'ospite
Massimo Favento, e più in generale dalle atmosfere rarefatte e malinconiche che pervadono
l'intero lavoro. L'anima death del suono dei Tystnaden è invece rappresentata da partiture
chitarristiche decisamente corpose ed articolate e da un validissimo lavoro alla batteria che
accenna stop and go di impatto.
Il disco si apre con la splendida First Embrace che presenta un chorus incentrato su melodie
molto orecchiabili ed immediate pur mantenendo una base heavy piuttosto rigorosa e potente.
Anche la successiva Münchausen Sindrome si muove lungo la direttrice tracciata dalla canzone
precedente, la prestazione vocale di Laura si erge a protagonista raggiungendo picchi di
espressività di valore assoluto e tutta la band riesce ad accompagnarla senza mai limitarsi a
ruolo di comprimaria (ascoltate il vibrante giro di basso a metà traccia). Tystnaden è tratta
dal precedente demo ed è una composizione dolcissima che vive sulla voce di Laura, qui
accompagnata anche dal violoncello; si tratta di una semi-ballad piuttosto varia e mai banale
che dimostra come i nostri siano capaci di un songwriting di grande valore. Più orientata verso
soluzioni death è la successiva Metaphora che presenta un impeto veemente e accattivante
ma che lascia spazio ad un intermezzo vocale di Laura molto evocativo. The Foolish Plan
è anch'essa estrapolata dal precedente demo, viene introdotta da un'intro di piano che
lascia presto campo al riffing grezzo delle chitarre e al growling imperioso di Lorenzo; la
composizione comunque è molto varia ed alterna momenti molto melodici a fraseggi più
aggressivi. In Hamlet si registra un'accentuazione della vena death del gruppo, testimoniata
dal cantato di Lorenzo che raggiunge livelli di violenza fin qui inediti. Anche in questo caso,
però, la canzone è cangiante e presenta anime diverse che ben convivono senza appesantire
il suono della proposta. The Joke presenta un arrangiamento iniziale quasi pop dovuto all'uso
di sintetizzatori, che però non prendono mai il sopravvento sugli altri strumenti limitandosi
solo ad arricchire la canzone. Anche qui la voce di Laura si eleva sugli scudi, la trovo molto
migliorata e più espressiva rispetto ai precedenti demo. Rewards è probabilmente la canzone
maggiormente inquadrabile negli schemi del death metal melodico, le ritmiche sono sempre
serrate e più quadrate e le divagazioni strumentali che animano la vena gotica del gruppo
sono ridotte all'osso. The Vanishing dimostra come la voce di Laura sia talmente versatile
da risultare molto gradevole anche quando i ritmi si alzano e occorre posizionarsi su registri
più aggressivi ed immediati. Pride vs. Intellect è un'altra canzone piuttosto varia che chiude
questo lavoro nel migliore dei modi: le melodie vocali definite dalla singer sono sempre molto
accattivanti, le tastiere mai appaiono manieristiche e l'anima metal è garantita dal sempre
egregio alle chitarre.
Siamo giunti alla conclusione e il giudizio finale non può che essere più che positivo. I Tystnaden
hanno confermato con questo CD di avere intrapreso un processo di maturazione personale e
convinto, dimostrando personalità e qualità indiscutibili, non limitandosi a percorrere strade
già battute e vivendo di rendita ma mettendosi in gioco e proponendo un prodotto più che
apprezzabile anche da parte di chi, come il sottoscritto, predilige sonorità più convenzionali.

Era da un po' di tempo che il gothic metal non veniva riportato con un solo disco su questi
livelli qualitativi. E chi ci è voluto per portare a termine una missione così ardua? Una tra
le numerose e misconosciute ma già valide band italiane (è ovvio che non stiamo parlando
dei 'soliti' e spesso troppo sopravvalutati Lacuna Coil, considerati ormai ovunque delle star
internazionali). "Sham Of Perfection" è il debutto ufficiale dei Tystnaden (monicker che,
tradotto dallo svedese, significa 'silenzio'), giovane ed interessante band friulana con due
demo alle spalle ("Tystnaden" del 2000 e "Fragments" del 2003), rilasciato nel 2006 dalla
Limb Music, etichetta che in passato ha contribuito a lanciare gli ormai famosissimi Rhapsody
Of Fire sul mercato internazionale. Impreziosito da un artwork essenziale ma minuzioso (ad
opera del bravo Travis Smith, già al lavoro per Katatonia, Opeth, Draconian e tanti altri) e
registrato ai prestigiosi New Sins Studio sotto la guida di Luigi Stefanini, questo album funge da
biglietto da visita per un combo in evidente stato di grazia, capace di plasmare con le proprie
mani un sound ispirato ed accattivante, unendo l'impatto devastante del death metal più
moderno (grazie ad una sezione ritmica che dimostra di non avere la minima carenza tecnica),
caratterizzato da riff secchi e assoli penetranti, a espedienti elettronici di tutto rispetto (la
tastiera di Lorenzo Frascaroli gioca un ruolo veramente importante nel disco, includendosi
a pieno titolo nei trademark della band; lo stesso si occupa anche delle sporadiche growling
vocals, sempre inserite con estremo gusto per la melodia) e vocals femminili graffianti e
passionali. Laura De Luca è la vera punta di diamante del gruppo: oltre ad essere l'autrice delle
bellissime liriche di "Sham Of Perfection", la Nostra si rivela una singer grintosa dal timbro
caldo e passionale, sensazionale nell'interpretare i brani più atmosferici, audace e trascinante
in quelli più aggressivi; perfino molte colleghe ben più note potrebbero tranquillamente
imparare il mestiere da lei. Nonostante di questi tempi si faccia di tutto pur di trovare in ogni
caso il paragone più facile (pensate che la stessa label ha tentato di propinare al pubblico i
Tystnaden come una semplice risposta italiana ad Evanescence e Nightwish), a nostro avviso
è alquanto inutile nascondere l'evidenza: i Nostri non sentono il minimo bisogno di imitare
nessuno e sanno come confezionare brani accattivanti senza per forza svendersi alle grandi
masse. Il risultato è stupefacente, tant'è che tra così tante belle canzoni è difficile decretarne
le migliori. Sembra proprio che la parola d'ordine per i Tystnaden sia una sola: emozionare.
Un concetto incarnato in ugual modo dalla rabbiosa e malinconica "First Embrace" (perfetta
metal-hit dal taglio 'sinfonico' nella quale le voci duellano con violenza fino all'ultimo
respiro), dall'eclettico nervosismo di "Münchausen Sindrome", dalle atmosfere chiaroscurali
di "Tystnaden" (impreziosita dal violoncello di Massimo Favento), dal romanticismo decadente
di "The Foolish Plan" (dotata di un superbo arrangiamento pianistico), dall'ipnotica oscurità
di "Rewards" e dalla tragica disillusione di "The Vanishing", che sfuma infine nel bellissimo
crescendo di "Pride Vs. Intellect". Con un simile disco sulle spalle, i Tystnaden travalicano
con tranquillità lo status di semplice promessa del gothic metal tricolore, inserendosi a pieno
titolo tra le stelle più luminose di questo firmamento. Date le prerogative, il nuovo album già in fase di ultimazione - non può che essere atteso da tutti gli amanti del gothic metal con
immensa trepidazione...
