all’O had long been working on what I called western files – archives of western pictures,
memorials and hang-overs linking traditional cultures to the present day. As an artist, he
picks up visual cues and explores the fascinating similarities among symbols. His work is all
to do with symbolic transmigration (R. Wittkover) and hence with the special vitality of icons
and their changing meanings over the centuries: how they come into their own at certain
periods though always carrying over some part of their past, their origin.

Dall’O has realised one can use toys to make serious statements; also, that representation
of the world calls for accumulation, quantity. But that is not just the Pop dimension of
consumerism and supermarkets: it extends beyond. War is constantly present in today’s world,
though exorcised at the same time. War exists but must not be seen. Soldier-insects tumble
out from all quarters and cling to objects; they are a virus, and also a visual factor whose
strongest weapon is numbers. Thousands of them, all the same. And given galvanoplastic
lustre with highlights in gold and silver. So art is beauty and splendour?
And yet they also serve as decoration. So many of them, all the same, their ranks forming
visual motifs like the palm leaf shapes that have commonly adorned buildings and interiors,
carpets, household objects.
