Rolex crea la prima cassa al mondo veramente impermeabile. è la nascita del famoso OYSTER. Questo
nome depositato significa ostrica, sinonimo di chiusura ermetica
funzionante fuori e nell’acqua senza alcun pericolo d’infiltrazioni
d’impurità, umidità, polvere, ...
L’orologio Oyster unisce a una cassa straordinariamente robusta,
un fondello e una corona di carica a vite, assolutamente impermeabili. La corona di carica, brevettata TWINLOCK, si avvita
contro la cassa e rende resistentissimo questo punto dell’orologio,
generalmente molto vulnerabile.
In un catalogo Rolex del 1981 leggiamo:

L’Oyster é un’ostrica e l’acqua é il suo elemento. Per la Rolex, la
parola Oyster é nel contempo un simbolo e un marchio depositato. Tutti i Rolex Oyster sono garantiti impermeabili fino ad almeno 50 m. di profondità sottomarina. Questa garanzia giunge per
l’Explorer fino a 100 m., per il Submariner fino a 300 m. e per il
Sea-Dweller con valvola ad elio (brevetto Rolex) fino a 1220 m.

The Oyster watch combines an extremely sturdy case, with a
case back and a winding crown, all absolutely waterproof. The
patented TWINLOCK winding crown, is wound against the case
and makes this generally very vulnerable point of the watch,
extremely resistant.
From a Rolex catalogue of 1981 we can read:

Una giovane donna inglese, di nome Mercedes Gleitze, attraversò a nuoto le acque ghiacciate della Manica con al polso un
ROLEX OYSTER PRECISION. L’orologio prodotto nel 1926, in oro 9 ct. con cassa
di forma ottagonale (31x27 mm.), dopo 15 ore e 15 minuti di traversata funzionava ancora perfettamente.
Leggiamo sul sito ufficiale della Casa che questo avvenimento “segna l’inizio di
una lunga tradizione: il legame degli orologi Rolex con persone eccezionali”.

A young English woman, named Mercedes Gleitze, swam across
the icy waters of the English Channel wearing a ROLEX OYSTER
PRECISION on her wrist. The watch, produced in 1926, made from 9 ct gold
with octagonal case (31x27 mm), still worked perfectly after the 15 hours and
15 minutes swim.
In the official website of the Company we can read that this event “marked the
beginning of a long tradition: the linking of Rolex watches with exceptional
individuals”.

Un nuovo capitolo nella storia dell’orologeria: nasce il ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL, il primo orologio da polso impermeabile che si ricarica automaticamente.
Da un catalogo Rolex del 1954 leggiamo:
“Scopo principale della creazione di un orologio a carica automatica
non é quella di risparmiarvi la fatica di ricaricarlo ogni sera.
La tensione della molla di un tale orologio é permanente, poiché il
meccanismo di carica automatica mantiene l’orologio caricato A
FONDO in modo costante e assicura, in tal modo, una trasmissione
regolare di forza non variabile, la quale, a sua volta, conferisce al movimento la massima precisione. Il Rolex Oyster Perpetual fu lanciato
sul mercato nel 1931 e la sua apparizione segnò una data nella storia
dell’orologeria.
I tecnici della Rolex avevano trovato, per la prima volta, la soluzione
completamente soddisfacente al problema sul quale gli orologiai avevano faticato nel corso dei secoli.
La soluzione ebbe nome “Rotor Rolex” e consisteva in una massa o in
un peso semicircolare rotante silenziosamente e senza urti sul suo asse,
nei due sensi, sotto l’impulso della forza di gravità.
Rolex riuscì così a eliminare gli urti e le scosse pregiudicanti il buon
funzionamento del prezioso meccanismo e ad escludere praticamente
tutte le possibilità di rottura della molla di carica. La carica é automaticamente diretta e controllata con cura, diventa perciò impossibile
che la molla sia troppo o insufficientemente caricata: da qui una più
grande precisione.”
Il movimento automatico si identifica prevalentemente con un tipo di
orologi che attira l’attenzione di tutto il mondo collezionistico, si tratta
di un modello che ha fatto la storia dell’orologeria: il “BUBBLE BACK”,
un Oyster chiamato comunemente in Italia “OVETTO”. La spiegazione
a questo soprannome é data dalla forma bombata del fondello, che
ricorda proprio un ovetto. Sarà prodotto per oltre 20 anni in diversi materiali, con innumerevoli varianti di quadrante e referenze.

A new chapter in watch history: the ROLEX OYSTER
PERPETUAL is born, the first waterproof selfwinding watch.
From a 1954 Rolex catalogue we can read:
“The main aim of the manufacture of a selfwinding watch is not to
avoid the daily task of manual winding. The mainspring tension of
such a watch is permanent, because the selfwinding mechanism
keeps the watch constantly FULLY wound and guarantees in this way
a regular non variable strength transmission, which ensures maximum
accuracy of the movement. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual was launched
on the market in 1931 and its appearance marked an important date
in watchmaking history.
Rolex technicians had found, for the first time, a fully satisfying solution
to the problem watchmakers had been working on for centuries.
The solution was named “Rotor Rolex” and consisted of a mass or a
semicircular weight, which swings on its axis back and forth silently
and without shocks, under the force of gravity.
In this way Rolex was able to eliminate shocks and bumps, which
compromised the correct functioning of the precious mechanism,
and remove any possibility of breaking the winding mainspring. The
winding is automatically driven and accurately controlled, therefore
making it impossible to over or underwind the mainspring: thus giving
higher accuracy.”
The automatic movement is mainly identified with a type of watch
which attracts the attention of the whole collectors’ world, it is a model
which made watch history: the “BUBBLE BACK”, an Oyster usually called
“OVETTO” in Italy. This nickname derives from the rounded shape of the
case back, just like an egg. It will be produced for over 20 years in
different materials, innumerable dial variants and references.

Sono pronti per la consegna i primi orologi
richiesti dalla Marina Militare Italiana e progettati dalla ditta G. Panerai & Figlio di Firenze. L’importanza storica e la rarità di questi esemplari trovano un riscontro
nel loro valore collezionistico. Sul quadrante appare scritto:
MARINA MILITARE o LUMINOR PANERAI o ancora RADIOMIR PANERAI; la corona, la cassa e il movimento sono firmati Rolex. Gli ultimi PANERAI con cassa e movimento di
fabbricazione Rolex portano la ref. 6152/1 e vengono in un
secondo tempo sottoposti ad alcune modifiche: la corona
non è più a vite ma bensì un prodotto brevettato direttamente dalla Panerai (corona resa impermeabile con dispositivo a pressione, definito “a leva”).

The first watches requested by the Italian
Navy and designed by G. Panerai & Figlio
Company in Florence are ready for delivery. The historical
importance and rarity of these examples are confirmed by
their collector’s value. The dial bears the wording: MARINA
MILITARE or LUMINOR PANERAI or RADIOMIR PANERAI;
the crown, case and movement are signed Rolex. The last
PANERAI watches with case and movement manufactured
by Rolex bear the ref. 6152/1 and at a later time underwent
some modifications: the crown is no longer screwed-down,
but is a product directly patented by Panerai (crown made
waterproof by a pressure device, called “lever device”).

Rolex propone un nuovo cronografo Oyster in
acciaio, acc/oro e in oro 18 ct. con ref. 3525,
conosciuto tra i collezionisti come “BARILETTO” o “MONOBLOCCO”.
Da una pubblicità del 1942 leggiamo:
“IL CRONOGRAFO OYSTER
Scientificamente ermetico, antimagnetico, due pulsanti e
incastonato in 17 rubini. Impermeabilità garantita per tempo indefinito ad una pressione di 6 atmosfere (60 metri di
profondità nel mare)”.
Commercializzato per un lungo periodo, oltre 10 anni, sembra ne siano stati prodotti circa 1400 esemplari. Fra questi
figurano i modelli “POW” (Prisoners of war), cronografi che
la Rolex forniva agli Ufficiali Inglesi (in comodato d’uso), prigionieri nei campi tedeschi nel corso della Seconda Guerra
Mondiale. Due di questi cronografi sono andati in vendita
da Antiquorum, a Ginevra, nell’asta di maggio del 2007.
Uno era appartenuto al Maggiore R. J. Henderson, della Royal Canadian Air Force e l’altro esemplare a Clive Nutting,
arruolato tra i riservisti del Royal Corps of Signal inglese
e catturato il 28 marzo del 1940 dai nazisti. Si ha traccia
anche di un automatico, un “OVETTO/BUBBLE-BACK” in
acciaio, assegnato ai prigionieri al fronte: la ref. 3372 con
ghiera graduata e secondi al centro.
La ref. 3525 (Ø 35 mm.) monta il calibro: 13’’.

3525, called by collectors “BARILETTO” or “MONOBLOCCO”
From a 1942 print advert we can read:
“THE OYSTER CHRONOGRAPH
Scientifically hermetic, antimagnetic, two buttons and
with 17 jewels. Guaranteed waterproof at a pressure of 6
atmospheres (60 meters below sea level)”.
Marketed for a long time, over 10 years, it seems to have
been produced in about 1400 examples. Among these,
there are the “POW” (Prisoners of war) models, chronographs
which Rolex supplied to the British Officers (free of charge),
who were prisoners in the German war camps during the
Second World War. Two of these chronographs were sold
at the Antiquorum’s auction of May 2007, in Geneva. One
of them belonged to the Major R.J. Henderson from the
Royal Canadian Air Force, the other one belonged to Clive
Nutting, enrolled among the reservists of the British Royal
Signal Corps and taken prisoner on 28th March 1940 by
the Nazis. There are also traces of an automatic watch, an
“OVETTO/BUBBLE-BACK” in stainless steel, given to prisoners
at the front: the ref. 3372 with graduated bezel and center
seconds.

Rolex realizza solo in acciaio, il primo orologio da polso per grandi profondità, il SUBMARINER. Automatico, impermeabile fino a 100 metri, questo orologio è provvisto di lunetta girevole graduata in 12 sezioni di 5 minuti, dove lo
zero è rappresentato da un triangolo con pallino fosforescente. Diametro di 37 millimetri, porta la referenza 6204 indicata sia sul
fondello sia tra le anse in riferimento delle ore 12. Il quadrante è stato prodotto in varie versioni, diverse tra loro sia per le scritte sia
per la loro disposizione. La corona di carica, ancora priva delle spallette che la proteggono da eventuali colpi, ha un diametro di
soli 5,3 millimetri. Seguono a breve le referenze 6205, 6536 e 6536/1, realizzate solo in acciaio. In queste nuove referenze la corona
di carica passa a 6 mm. di diametro. Tutti questi Submariner riportano punzonato all’interno del fondello la propria referenza.
Le referenze 6204 e 6205 montavano il calibro: 9 3/4’’ A. 260, creato nel 1950.

Rolex creates the first wristwatch, only in stainless steel, for great depths, the SUBMARINER. Automatic, waterproof
up to 100 meters, this watch is equipped with a graduated rotating bezel with 12, 5 minute divisions, where the zero
is represented by a triangular index with a fluorescent dot. It has a 37 millimeter diameter, the reference 6204 is indicated both
on the case back and between the lugs at 12 o’clock. The dial was produced in several versions, differing one from another both
for the wordings and for their lay-out. The winding crown, still without guards which protect it against bumps, has a diameter of
only 5.3 millimeters. The references 6205, 6536 and 6536/1 shortly follow, realized only in stainless steel. In these new references
the winding crown diameter has passed to 6 mm. All these Submariner watches bear their reference number hallmarked inside
the case back.

Compare il primo modello di Submariner “moderno”: la referenza 5512 con spallette di protezione alla corona di carica. Solo nei primi anni di produzione
le spallette di protezione alla corona di carica, definite “cornini”
dai collezionisti, sono più assottigliate verso la punta rispetto
alla versione classica. Impermeabile fino a 200m-660ft, la ref.
5512, realizzata solo in acciaio, monta una corona di carica da
7 mm. di diametro, inizialmente “Twinlock” e successivamente
“Triplock”. Esiste sia una versione con certificato di cronometro
sia una priva di certificazione; ma tutte sono “garantite senza
radiazioni”. Rimase in produzione fino al 1978, passando per
numerose evoluzioni tecniche e stilistiche. La ref. 5512 riporta
punzonato all’interno del fondello la propria referenza e può
essere equipaggiata da uno dei seguenti calibri: 1530, 1560
e 1570.

The first “modern” Submariner model appears:
the reference 5512 with protection crown guards.
Only in the first years of production the crown guards, called
“cornini” by Italian collectors, have a thinner point than the
classic version. Waterproof to 200m-660ft, the ref. 5512, made
only in stainless steel, bears a 7 mm diameter winding crown,
which originally was the “Twinlock” and then the “Triplock”.
There is both a version with chronometer certificate and one
without certificate; however, all versions are “guaranteed nonradioactive”. It was produced until 1978, undergoing numerous
technical and design evolutions. The ref. 5512 has its reference
number hallmarked inside the case back and can bear one of
the following calibers: 1530, 1560 and 1570.

Anno dopo anno, il Rolex Oyster conseguì una serie di straordinari successi. Nel 1960, un Rolex Oyster speciale (il Deep Sea Special/
il Rolex degli abissi) fissato all’esterno del batiscafo “Trieste” del Professore Jacques Piccard fu immerso sino alla profondità di quasi 11 km., dove la pressione
è di circa una tonnellata per centimetro quadrato. Il funzionamento dell’orologio
non venne alterato da tale esperienza.

Year after year, the Rolex Oyster achieved a series of extraordinary
successes. In 1960, a special Rolex Oyster (the Deep Sea Special)
fixed to the outside of Professor Jacques Piccard’s bathyscaphe “Trieste”, traveled
to a depth of 11 km, subject to a pressure of one ton per square centimeter. The
watch worked perfectly and was not harmed by this experience.

Compare sui cataloghi Rolex la referenza 1016: OYSTER PERPETUAL EXPLORER CHRONOMETER che
resterà in produzione fino al 1990, sostituito dal nuovo modello
14270.
Su un catalogo del 1973, “Il Rolex Oyster” leggiamo:
“L’EXPLORER, chiamato anche il Rolex rinforzato. Cassa Oyster
rinforzata, garantita impermeabile fino a 100 metri di profondità. Eccezionale resistenza agli urti, carica automatica a rotore,
movimento di cronometro con certificato ufficiale. Il quadrante è
nero, con ore particolarmente luminose, per una comoda lettura
anche nelle condizioni più difficili. L’orologio che portava Sir John
Hunt nella sua vittoriosa spedizione sull’Everest. Disponibile soltanto in acciaio”.
Era equipaggiato inizialmente da un bracciale Flushfit a maglie
rivettate con ref. 6636 o 7206, poi dal bracciale Oyster a maglie
ripiegate con ref. 7836 e, verso la fine degli anni ’70 (definito sui
cataloghi EXPLORER I) con cinturino in pelle o con bracciale
Oyster a maglie piene (ref. 78360).
Attorno alla metà degli anni ‘60, viene fatta per celebrare la visita della Nasa (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
in Giappone una serie speciale di Explorer, ref. 1016: il modello
Space-Dweller. Prodotto in un quantitativo molto limitato, questo
modello presenta sul quadrante, al posto della scritta Explorer, la
dicitura Space-Dweller.
La ref. 1016 riporta punzonato all’interno del fondello la propria
referenza e monta inizialmente il calibro 1560 sostituito in un secondo tempo dal 1570.

In a 1973 Rolex catalogue, “The Rolex Oyster”, we can read:
“The EXPLORER, also called the reinforced Rolex. Reinforced Oyster
case, guaranteed waterproof to 100 meter depth. Exceptional
shock-resistance, rotor selfwinding, officially certified chronometer
movement. The dial is black, has very luminous hours for easy
reading even in the hardest conditions. The watch worn by Sir
John Hunt during his successful Everest expedition. Available only
in stainless steel”.
It was originally equipped with a Flushfit rivet link bracelet ref. 6636
or 7206, then with the Oyster folded link bracelet ref. 7836 and,
towards the end of the 1970’s (called EXPLORER I in the catalogues)
with a leather strap or Oyster solid link bracelet (ref. 78360).
About half way through the 60’s, to celebrate the visit from Nasa
(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in Japan, an
Explorer special series, ref. 1016, is made: the Space-Dweller model.
Produced in a very limited number, this watch has the wording
Space-Dweller in the place of Explorer on the dial.
The ref. 1016 bears its reference number hallmarked inside the
case back and originally has the caliber 1560, then replaced by
the caliber 1570.

Rolex presenta due nuovi cronografi Daytona, a carica manuale,
con pulsanti a vite: le referenze 6263 con lunetta nera e 6265 con lunetta graduata in metallo. Entrambe le referenze vengono realizzate in acciaio, oro
14 e 18 ct. e resteranno in produzione fino al 1987, passando da un’impermeabilità
garantita di 50 (165 ft.) a 100 metri (330 ft.). Modelli con quadrante “Newman”
vengono prodotti solo nei primi anni. Solo in un secondo tempo compare sul quadrante dei modelli in oro la dicitura: SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY

Rolex introduces two new DAYTONA chronographs, with manual winding
and screw down buttons: the references 6263 with black bezel and 6265 with
metal graduated bezel. Both references are manufactured in stainless steel, 14 ct and 18 ct
gold and will remain in production until 1987, with guaranteed impermeability passing from
50 (165 ft) to 100 meters (330 ft). Models with “Newman” dial are produced only in the first
years. At a later date, the wording: SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED
appears on the dial of the gold models, and the wording DAYTONA on the stainless steel
models.

Cessata la produzione dei Cosmograph a carica manuale, Rolex lancia sul mercato le prime referenze di cronografo
automatico con vetro zaffiro: 16520 per il modello
in acciaio, 16523 per il modello in acciaio e oro
e 16528 per il modello in oro. Queste nuove referenze montano il nuovo calibro 4030, derivato dal
calibro base Zenith El Primero 400. Da citare ancora un cambiamento nella graduazione della
scala tachimetrica: fino a 200 unità orarie nella
prima serie (1988) e fino a 400 unità orarie nelle
serie successive. Intorno al 1994-1995 un’evoluzione della vernice della pista dei contatori che da
chiaro é diventato scuro (marrone) ha dato origine a una particolare variante della ref. 16520 con
quadrante nero, nota tra i collezionisti di tutto il
mondo come “The Patrizzi”. Oggi questi esemplari
sono particolarmente ambiti dai collezionisti e portano valutazioni notevolmente superiori ai modelli
standard. Le referenze 16520 e 16523 portano punzonato all’interno del fondello 16500 o il codice a 4
cifre 2100. La ref. 16528 porta punzonato all’interno
del fondello 16500.

After the discontinued production of
the manual winding Cosmograph,
Rolex launches the first references of the selfwinding
chronograph with sapphire crystal on the market:
16520 for the stainless steel model, 16523 for the
stainless steel and gold model and 16528 for the
gold model. These new references bear the new
caliber 4030, based on the caliber Zenith El Primero
400. Yet another change in the tachometer scale
graduation to note: up to 200 units per hour in the
first series (1988) and up to 400 units per hour in the
following series. Around 1994-1995, a modification
in the paint color of the register track, passing from
a light to a dark color (brown) resulted in creation
of a particular variant of the ref. 16520 with black
dial, known as “The Patrizzi” dial in the collectors’
world. These examples are today much sought
after by collectors and their quotations are much
higher than the standard models. The references
16520 and 16523 have 16500 or the 4 digit code
2100 hallmarked inside the case back.

modello MILGAUSS nato negli anni ’50.
In queste nuove referenze (116400 e 116400 GV) il movimento, calibro 3131, presenta la spirale PARACHROM,
sviluppata e fabbricata dalla Rolex e uno scappamento con ancora realizzata in un materiale antimagnetico; innovazioni che migliorano notevolmente la resistenza ai disturbi magnetici.
Impermeabile fino a 100 metri, munito di una lancetta
dei secondi di colore arancio, è disponibile in acciaio
con bracciale Oyster, ref. 72400, e chiusura Oysterclasp
con Easylink.
La ref. 116400 GV rappresenta la “versione anniversario” caratterizzata da un vetro zaffiro verde.

Alla fiera di Basilea Rolex presenta il SEA-DWELLER DEEPSEA, ref. 116660, impermeabile fino alla profondità di
12.800 piedi - 3.900 metri: l’Oyster subacqueo di nuova generazione. Brevettata da Rolex la nuova struttura della
cassa: il Ringlock System, che permette all’orologio di resistere alla pressione delle grandissime profondità grazie all’anello ad
alta resistenza, collocato tra il vetro e il fondello, al vetro zaffiro (più spesso rispetto agli altri modelli Oyster e leggermente bombato) e al fondo della cassa costruito con una lega in titanio. Lunetta girevole unidirezionale con disco nero in Cerachrom e
scala graduata di 60 minuti. Leggiamo sulla cartella stampa della Rolex:
“Le cifre e i simboli della lunetta, incisi nel CERACHROM, sono trattati con platino mediante una tecnica di finitura PVD brevettata da Rolex. Lo zero della scala graduata, simboleggiato da un triangolo, resta visibile più a lungo nelle profondità marine
grazie ad una capsula contenente un nuovo materiale luminescente di tonalità blu. Per garantire una perfetta leggibilità del
quadrante, le lancette e gli indici in oro, sono ingranditi e parzialmente ricoperti del materiale luminescente di cui sopra.
La valvola a elio è in acciaio inossidabile molto resistente. Le sue dimensioni sono state adattate a quelle della cassa per ottenere
una perfetta impermeabilità. Nel momento della decompressione, la valvola facilita la fuoriuscita dei gas che si sono infiltrati
nell’orologio durante i periodi di immersione trascorsi all’interno dei cassoni subacquei. È noto, infatti, che i sub professionisti
quando lavorano a grandi profondità utilizzano appositi contenitori pressurizzati all’interno dei quali respirano una miscela di
gas ad alta pressione fra cui l’elio. Questo elemento, essendo altamente volatile, penetra all’interno dell’orologio. Durante le fasi di
decompressione, al momento di risalire in superficie, questa valvola agisce da elemento di sicurezza consentendo la fuoriuscita
dell’elio”.
Il nuovo DeepSea monta il calibro 3135, ed è accompagnato da un bracciale, ref. 98210, realizzato in acciaio 904L con lamelle
di prolunga Fliplock e un nuovo fermaglio GLIDELOCK che ne consente l’esatta regolazione senza togliere l’orologio.

At Baselworld Exhibition, Rolex introduces the SEA-DWELLER DEEPSEA, ref. 116660 waterproof up to a depth of
12,800 feet - 3,900 meters: the new generation Oyster diver’s watch. The new case architecture patented by Rolex:
the Ringlock System, which allows the watch to resist water pressure at very great depths, thanks to the high resistance ring,
placed between the crystal and the case back, to the sapphire crystal (thicker than the crystals used for other Oyster models and
slightly domed) and to the case back made from a titanium alloy. Unidirectional rotating bezel with black insert in Cerachrom
and scale graduated to 60 minutes. From the Rolex press file we can read:
“Engraved in the CERACHROM, the numerals and the graduations are filled with platinum through the use of a PVD technique
patented by Rolex. The zero marker of the graduated bezel, represented by a triangle, is visible longer at night or in the depths
of the ocean thanks to a capsule containing a new luminescent material that emits a blue glow. To enhance legibility, the gold
indexes and hands are wider and partially coated with the same new luminescent material and also emit a blue colour. The
helium valve is made of high-performance stainless steel. Its size is adapted to the dimensions of the case to achieve optimal
waterproofness. The helium valve is a safety feature which, during the decompression phase, releases the gases that infiltrate into

The new DeepSea model bears the caliber 3135 and is fitted with a bracelet, ref. 98210, made from stainless steel 904L with
Fliplock extension links and a new GLIDELOCK clasp, which enables a precise adjustment without removing the watch.
