Nature Morte
13th December 2012 - 28th February 2013
Opening 13th December at 7 p.m.
“The gardener does with his bushes and plants, what the poet does with the words, he
puts them together in such way that they seem new and strange and also as for the first
time completely themselves.” Hugo von Hofmannsthal
For the exhibition “Nature Morte” at Galleria Suzy Shammah, German photographer Ingar
Krauss (Berlin, 1965) brings pictures realized since autumn 2009, dedicated to still life.
Krauss paints each black and white print with transparent oil colors, giving the images a
timeless dimension in the romantic tradition of the vanitas.
The artist photographs the East German countryside, near the Polish border, where he
lives. He is a gardener and dedicates time to plants and animals that naturally became a
privileged pictorial subject. As every gardener wants to put nature in his special order he
also tries to compose plants in the pictures, making use of their vegetable obstinacy. Thus
every still life becomes a poetic test field.
