Krauss paints each black and white print with transparent oil colors, giving the images a timeless dimension in the romantic tradition of the vanitas. The artist photographs the East German countryside, near the Polish border, where he lives. He is a gardener and dedicates time to plants and animals that naturally became a privileged pictorial subject. As every gardener wants to put nature in his special order he also tries to compose plants in the pictures, making use of their vegetable obstinacy. Thus every still life becomes a poetic test field.
