The Project
Il Progetto
In a time when it is our duty to investigate
alternative non-oil based energy sources, Smart
Grid represents the most sustainable model in
environmental, energetic and economic terms.
The nodes in the energy grid will be the power
stations of the future: intermodal and social centers,
in which we will be able to exchange energy and
data, and interact socially as if we were in a market,
or rather in an energy mall.
In these energy malls we will switch from
“volumetric” vehicles for long-distance travel
short-distance movements (electro assisted and
automated individual devices that are an extension
to one’s body).
The bicycle is a perfect example of a corporal
I use my body to move in the space, truly
experiencing the surrounding environment and
accumulating energy that I can then reuse for other
purposes.
A new Smart Grid mobile will encourage
sustainable, individual energy production.
The project investigates the space where energy
exchanges take place, from extra urban to urban,
from collective to individual, with the objective of
enhancing the landscape The purpose is to reveal
the landscape and promote a renewed sense of
community.
We imagine a new form of democratization of
energy. Everybody can transform and exchange
!!""#
idrocarburi, Smart Grid rappresenta oggi l’ipotesi
più sostenibile, in termini ambientali, energetici ed
economici.
distanze (mezzi singoli elettro assistiti e autonomi,
corporale (peraltro ancora insuperato in termini
spostarmi nello spazio, facendo un’esperienza
reale dell’ambiente, trasformando e accumulando
energia che potrò successivamente riutilizzare per
altri usi.
produzione individuale dell’energia.
Il nostro progetto indaga i luoghi dello scambio
energetico collettivo ed individuale attraverso i quali
disvelare il paesaggio urbano ed extraurbano e
promuovere un rinnovato senso della comunità.
Immaginiamo una nuova forma di
democratizzazione dell’energia. Tutti potranno
accessibile.

Exhibit
Allestimento
The aim of the exhibit is to involve visitors in a performance that is
set in real urban contexts (Rome and Milan), creating at the same
time the situation of a social exchange.
The exhibit consists of a semi immersive video installation, which is
;!#<
of the space are two bicycles. In front of each bike two cameras
equipped with Kinect sensors are placed.
Two projectors are hanging from the ceiling, one projecting onto
!#
Around the bikes are a number of modules measuring 100 x 50 x
50 cm: a lithium battery (Smart grid portable device SCiB Toshiba),
an algae photobioreactor, photovoltaic glass, a personal computer
(directing booth). All the modules are also used as seating for the
visitors and exemplify the modules at the basis of the Energy Mall
architectures in the video.
A trailer video of the exhibit is projected in a loop on one of the
walls.
When the visitor sits on one of the bikes, the trailer video stops
playing and the interactive performance starts. The cameras start
recording through the Kinect sensor and, at the same time, a
video begins showing the visitor cycling through a virtual urban
landscape. A loading bar will show the performance progression in
terms of percentage.
Information regarding the journey (distance, time, energy that has
been transformed) will appear on the screen. Until the bar reaches
'**+#=>?!@
will switch from the individual “corporal” medium to the “volumetric”
extra-urban one.
In the case of two cyclists, the performance will be experienced as
a pair, along the same urban itinerary. At the end of the journey,
the visitors will have contributed to recharging the battery and the
connected devices.
trasporto “corporale” urbano a quello “volumetrico” extraurbano.

OBR Open Building Research has been established in 2000
with the idea of researching new ways of living creating a design
network between Genoa, London and New York, later extended to
Istanbul, Mumbai and Beijing.
The team of OBR develops the experimental line through the
participation in international projects and design competitions
involved in public and social programs in newly advanced urban
development countries.
The research by OBR is focused on urban design producing
