The History of the First
In 1924, Harry Grosberg founded Belstaff in Victoria Place, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent in
Staffordshire in the English Midlands. The original product line consisted of waterproof
garments for men and women.
For the company logo a portrait of a Phenix rising up was chosen as a symbol of the
continuity through the times in the good and bad fate.
At about this time Belstaff became the first company in the world to use a fabric that was
totally waterproof but breathable, the now famous "Wax Cotton". This was a very fine
Egyptian cotton treated with natural oils, making it waterproof while leaving the cotton’s
excellent breathability characteristics unimpaired. With this material, Belstaff specialised
in the creation of high technology wear for the protection of the motorcyclist.
During the Thirties Belstaff specialized in making technical garments wind-proof, rain-proof
and resistant to heavy friction. Therefore they specialized in garments for aviators, bikers,
army and for anyone living an active life outdoor. Together with protective clothing Belstaff
also began to make goggles, gloves, boots, helmets and bags, all designed and evolved
over the years to guarantee total protection and safety.
The famous Trialmaster jacket has been worn by generations of motorcycle enthusiasts from
famous champions such as Sammy Miller with his record 1,250 victories, and Phil Read,
who always wore it when competing in Grand Prix races in wet weather, to legendary names
such as Ernesto Che Guevara who used it during his motorcycle journey across Latin America.
In 1943 the famous "Black Prince Motorcycle Jacket" was created, the best-selling
waterproof jacket of all time. For about forty years, over 40,000 of these were produced
annually in the purpose-built Silverdale factory. The traditional manufacturing processes
was retained out of love and respect for the English tradition, which is why Belstaff jackets
hold their value. Jackets from the 1950’s and 1960’s are keenly sought-after by collectors
and enthusiasts and are kept as trophies by true motorcyclists.
Belstaff today is the only garment manufacturer producing high technology jackets in 100%
natural fabrics. The synthetic materials sector is, however, by no means disregarded by
Belstaff. In the 1970’s, the famous XL500 jacket was created using a specially developed
nylon textile known as Belflex. Belflex’s qualities of wearability, resilience and durability
are still unsurpassed today. The XL500 is still the best seller; essential, hard-wearing, totally
waterproof, and infinitely durable. Put to the test by thousands of motorcyclists throughout
the world, it has all the essentials - but nothing superfluous - protecting the motorcyclist
from the elements.
At the start of the 1990’s, Belstaff presented its new "Evolution" range, another milestone
in the history of motorcycle wear.
Unfortunately the English textile industry crisis involved Belstaff as well, who were obliged
to close the Stoke-on-Trent factory in 1991. Everything seem to be over, but, thanks to
some clients and some technicians firm intention not to let the Mythos die, the production
went on in a factory in Wellimborough, even if strongly reduced in quantities. Responsibility
of collection design was given to Franco Malenotti.
In 1994, the Nylon fabric "Belfresh" was created. This is exceptionally absorbent while
allowing perspiration to be eliminated. It is therefore ideal for hot weather. In 1995 Beltech
was developed. This veritable "protection System" offers top performance in terms of
waterproofing, breathability and protection from the elements. It will make history.
In 1996 Franco Malenotti founded Clothing Company in order to speed up Belstaff return
to the tops. The response was immediate and the sales increased very quickly. In 1999, the
first fabric with external metal protection was introduced, Ironguard. In the same year,
jackets in the “Stratos” series made from a combination of textiles with different
characteristics were developed for protection in hotter climates. In 2000, Belstaff introduced
the “Reacta” concept, a protection System able to stabilise temperature in all conditions
of use. In 2002, the joint venture with the Italian company began to bear fruit also at
European level and Belstaff regained an high profile in markets where for many years it had
been the uncontested leader. The Bags & Shoes Division was set up in the same year and
soon became independent, achieving remarkable success. At the same time, the “Black
Prince by Belstaff” Collection was relaunched for a younger target. In 2003 Belstaff
conducted a study together with a well known Italian textile factory for the production of
safety jackets for special forces. This led to the creation of Balistic Fabric, a highperformance fabric that was an immediate market success. In order to improve comfort and
fit, Belstaff also developed and patented a special seam system called “Elastoseam®” with
elasticated and waterproof Cordura inserts, that allow garments to follow the wearer’s most
dynamic movements. The match between the “Elastoseam®” system and “Balistic Fabric”
paved the way to the “Delta Force” collection: exceptional-performance jackets and blouson.
In the same year, Belstaff developed products that used the unique qualities of leather and
of the “Elastoseam®” system to provide extraordinary protection and comfort: the
“Ergonomic Leather Collection”.
In 2003 Belstaff together with George Clooney, a keen biker, promoted an European
campaign for the diffusion of cardiologic first aid on two wheels.
In 2004, Belstaff International Ltd was taken over by the Clothing Company.
This was also the year in which Belstaff celebrated its 80th anniversary with the launch of
a special collection, the 80th Anniversary Collection. In the same year, Belstaff introduced
a ultralight and strong Nylon fabric with the patented “Diablo” weave, used for the Extralight
Collection; waterproof and perfectly breathable jackets designed for summer wear. At the
same time, “Black Prince by Belstaff” sponsored the “Telefonica Movistar Honda Team” with
riders Sete Gibernau and Colin Edwards set to win the Moto GP world championships. At
the end of the year Sete will qualify second in the world and the following year Marco
Melandri gained the second place.
During that period, Belstaff’s apparel aroused a great deal of interest in the USA and the
garments were continually requested for many of the most popular films, such as “Batman
Begins”, “Blade Trinity”, “The Interpreter”, “Tomb Raider II”, “Ocean’s Twelve”, “War of the
Worlds” to mention just a few. The “Aviator by Belstaff” Collection, inspired by original
apparel in Belstaff’s museum, has been launched in 2005. This clothing was made in the
1930’s and 1940’s to protect aviators in extreme weather conditions. The “Aviator by
Belstaff” Collection, made with respect for the original materials to ensure maximum
authenticity, were chosen by Miramax for the costumes of the film “The Aviator” starring
Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese.
In the same year, through a collaborative effort with a leading weaving mill, Belstaff
developed the Cotfort® material: a fabric made from a blend of very fine, high-quality
cotton, Nylon and Elastan fibres offering exceptional coolness, strength and stretch.
The Ballistic Fabric from the Delta Force collection was used in 2006 to make the
extraordinary M Blouson, as worn by Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 3 and which he
personally put through unbelievable wear and tear.
Other famous stars, including Nicole Kidman (The Interpreter), Mark Wahlberg (Four
Brothers), Scarlett Johansson (Match Point), James Marsden (X Men 3), Tom Hanks (The Da
Vinci Code), Ewan McGregor (Stormbreaker) and many others also rely on the quality of
Belstaff products for their image and protection.
Kevin Spacey too, in Superman Returns, in the role of Lex Luthor, Superman’s great enemy,
turned to Belstaff who, with the costume designer Louise Mingenbach, produced the
costumes for the most daring action scenes.
Famous singers such as Madonna, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Jamie Foxx, Ciara and Black
Eyed Peas use Belstaff items in their private life and in the video clips most frequently
aired.
Belstaff has achieved worldwide success with the opening of such markets as Japan, the
far east, Russia and US, Australia and South America.
In the meantime the Bags and Shoes Division, which started up in 2004, and the Eyewear
Division, which came into operation in 2005, are achieving considerable success in terms
of sales.
The opening of a flagship store in the London west end marks the “return” of Belstaff to
the top: The ancient Phoenix legend, represented on the company logo, continues and the
re-birth is complete.
Major film production companies once again called on Belstaff for costumes in 2005 and
2006. The Departed, with Leonardo DiCaprio, and X Men The Last Stand were just two of
the productions in which Belstaff was involved.
Belstaff returned to the Pure Motorcycle sector in 2005, after many years’ absence, with a
collection intended for leading technical motorcycling apparel stores. The collection’s great
success gave prominence to the return of this top brand.
A major new international patent was presented in this sector in 2006: Q.A.S (Quick
Adjustment System®) by which, through the use of special, sliding wheels, garments can
be instantly adjusted to suit their use.
Belstaff remains the only custodian of the tradition of waterproof and protective motorcycle
wear. A wealth of new and old knowledge, technique, fashion and design.

Nel 1924 Harry Grosberg fonda la Belstaff in Victoria Place, Longton, Stoke on Trent nel
centro dell’Inghilterra, nel meraviglioso Staffordshire. I prodotti originali sono costituiti da
capi di abbigliamento impermeabili per donna e uomo. Come marchio aziendale viene scelta
la raffigurazione di una fenice che si alza in volo quale simbolo di continuità nel tempo
nella buona e nella cattiva sorte. E’ circa in questo periodo che la Belstaff comincia ad
utilizzare, per prima al mondo, un tessuto completamente impermeabile e traspirante,
l’ormai famoso “Wax Cotton”. Un finissimo cotone egiziano trattato con grassi naturali che
lo rendono impermeabile pur non alterando minimamente le ottime doti di traspirazione
del cotone.
Negli anni ’30 la Belstaff si specializza nel realizzare capi tecnici per la protezione dal vento,
dalle intemperie e dall’impatto. Quindi capi per aviatori, per motociclisti, per militari e per
tutti coloro che vivono attivamente esposti alle intemperie.
Insieme all’abbigliamento protettivo la Belstaff inizia a produrre occhiali, guanti, stivali,
caschi e borse. Il tutto studiato ed evoluto negli anni per garantire la protezione e la
sicurezza totali.
La famosa giacca “Trialmaster” è stata usata da generazioni di appassionati motociclisti,
da famosi campioni quali Sammy Miller, con un record di 1.250 vittorie, e Phil Read, che la
utilizzava sempre nei gran premi in caso di pioggia, nonché da personaggi mitici come
Ernesto Che Guevara che la utilizzò durante il suo viaggio in moto attraverso l’America
Latina.
Nel 1943 nasce la famosa “Black Prince Motorcycle Jacket”, la giacca impermeabile da moto
più venduta di ogni tempo. Prodotta nella fabbrica di Silverdale, appositamente realizzata,
in oltre 40.000 capi annui per circa 40 anni!
Le antiche tecniche di lavorazione sono state preservate con amore e rispetto della
tradizione inglese. E’ per questo che le giacche Belstaff conservano il loro valore nel tempo:
giacche degli anni ’50 e ’60 sono avidamente ricercate da collezionisti e appassionati e
conservate come trofei dai veri motociclisti.
La Belstaff è tuttora l’unico fabbricante di abbigliamento a produrre giacche altamente
tecniche con tessuti 100% naturali; ma non per questo trascura il settore dei materiali
sintetici e negli anni ’70 nasce la famosa giacca XL500 per cui è messo a punto uno speciale
tessuto di Nylon chiamato Belflex. Il Belflex presenta delle caratteristiche di vestibilità
robustezza e durata nel tempo che sono ancora oggi insuperate.
La XL500 è tuttora un best seller: essenziale, robusta, perfettamente impermeabile, eterna.
Collaudata da migliaia di motociclisti in tutto il mondo, ha tutto quello che serve, ma niente
di più, per ripararsi dalle intemperie in moto.
All’inizio degli anni ’90 la Belstaff presenta la nuova collezione “Evolution”, un’altra pietra
miliare nella storia dell’abbigliamento motociclistico. Purtroppo la crisi dell’industria tessile
in Inghilterra coinvolge anche la Belstaff che è costretta nel 1991 a chiudere lo Stabilimento
di Stock on Trent. Tutto sembra finito. Ma grazie ad alcuni clienti e di un gruppo di tecnici
decisi a non far morire il mito, la produzione, pur notevolmente ridotta nelle quantità,
continua in un laboratorio nelle città di Wellimborough, e la responsabilità del design delle
collezioni viene affidata a Franco Malenotti.
Nel 1994 nasce il “Belfresh”, un Nylon con eccezionali caratteristiche di assorbimento ed
eliminazione della traspirazione corporea, l’ideale per le stagioni calde.
Nel 1995 viene messo a punto il “Beltech”, un vero e proprio “sistema di protezione” dalle
incredibili prestazioni di impermeabilità, traspirabilità, protezione dalle intemperie e dalle
cadute; farà storia.
Nel 1996 Franco Malenotti costituisce la Clothing Company nell’intento di accelerare il
ritorno della Belstaff ai vertici. Il successo è immediato e le vendite crescono in maniera
rapidissima.
Nel 1999 viene introdotto il primo tessuto con protezione esterna metallica, l’Ironguard.
Le giacche della serie “Stratos”, dotate di una combinazione di tessuti con diverse
caratteristiche, vengono messe a punto, per la protezione nei climi più caldi, nello stesso
anno.
Nel 2000 la Belstaff introduce il concetto “Reacta”: un sistema di protezione “intelligente”
che stabilizza la temperatura in tutte le condizioni di utilizzo.
Nel 2002 il lavoro della società italiana comincia a dare i suoi frutti anche a livello europeo
e la Belstaff riconquista un importante rilievo nei mercati dove, in passato, era stata per
lungo tempo leader indiscussa.
Nello stesso anno viene creata la Divisione Borse e Scarpe che in breve tempo acquisisce
una propria autonomia. Contemporaneamente viene rieditata la Collezione “Black Prince by
Belstaff” destinata ad un pubblico giovane.
Nel 2003, lo studio condotto dalla Belstaff in collaborazione con una rinomata tessitura
italiana per la realizzazione di giacche destinate all’equipaggiamento di sicurezza dei corpi
di Pronto Intervento, determina la nascita del “Balistic Fabric”: un tessuto dalle prestazioni
eccezionali che riscontra un immediato successo sul mercato. Contemporaneamente, nel
settore del miglioramento della vestibilità, la Belstaff mette a punto e brevetta un
particolare sistema di cuciture chiamato “Elastoseam®”, che tramite inserti elasticizzati ed
impermeabili, consente il cambiamento delle dimensioni del capo per assecondare i
movimenti più estremi. L’introduzione del sistema “Elastoseam®” con l’impiego del tessuto
“Balistic Fabric” ha permesso la realizzazione della collezione “Delta Force”: giacche e
giubbotti dalle prestazioni eccezionali.
Nello stesso anno, la Belstaff mette a punto una speciale collezione che sfruttando le
proprietà della pelle e del “Sistema Elastoseam®” garantisce eccezionali caratteristiche di
protettività e comfort: la “Ergonomic Leather Collection”.
Nel 2003 Belstaff è promotrice, insieme ad un vero e appassionato motociclista, George
Clooney, di una campagna europea per la diffusione del pronto soccorso cardiologico rapido
su due ruote.
Nel 2004, la Belstaff International Ltd. viene acquisita dalla Clothing Company. Proprio in
quest’anno si celebra l’80° Anniversario della Belstaff ed in tale occasione viene disegnata
una speciale Collezione: l’ “80ª Anniversary Collection”.
Nello stesso anno, la Belstaff introduce un tessuto di Nylon ultraleggero e resistente con
tessitura brevettata “Diablo” per la realizzazione della Extralight Collection: giacche e
giubbotti impermeabili e perfettamente traspiranti, studiati per la stagione calda.
Contemporaneamente, “Black Prince by Belstaff” sponsorizza il Team “Telefonica Movistar
Honda” che punta a vincere il mondiale del Moto GP con i piloti Sete Gibernau e Colin
Edwards. A fine anno Sete sarà secondo. L’anno successivo sarà Melandri a conquistare il
secondo posto.
In questo periodo, grande interesse suscitano i modelli Belstaff negli USA, da dove giungono
continue richieste per l’utilizzo degli stessi nelle più prestigiose produzioni
cinematografiche: “Batman Begins”, “Blade Trinity”, “The Interpreter”, “Tomb Raider II”
ed “Ocean’s Twelve”, “War of the Worlds” per citarne alcuni tra i tanti.
Nel 2005, viene lanciata la Collezione “The Aviator by Belstaff” ispirata a capi originali
provenienti dal museo Belstaff: modelli degli anni ’30 e ’40, appositamente realizzati per
la protezione degli aviatori nelle condizioni atmosferiche estreme. I modelli della collezione
“The Aviator by Belstaff”, realizzati nel più rigoroso rispetto dei materiali per garantirne la
massima autenticità, sono stati scelti dalla Miramax per i costumi del film “The Aviator”,
interpretato da Leonardo DiCaprio e diretto da Martin Scorsese.
Nello stesso anno, con la collaborazione di una prestigiosa Tessitura, la Belstaff mette a
punto il tessuto Cotfort, realizzato dalla combinazione di fibre di cotone, Cordura® ed
Elastan di elevata finezza e qualità, con straordinarie caratteristiche di freschezza, resistenza
ed elasticità.
Con il tessuto “Balistic Fabric” della collezione “Delta Force”, nel 2006 viene realizzata la
straordinaria giacca
“M Blouson” indossata da Tom Cruise nel film “Mission Impossible 3” e da lui personalmente
sottoposta ad incredibili stress. Altre famose star tra le quali Nicole Kidman (The

Nel frattempo, la “Divisione Borse e Scarpe” inaugurata nel 2004 e la “Divisione Occhiali”
che ha cominciato ad operare nel 2005 riscuotono grande successo di vendite.
L’apertura di un Flagship Store nel centro di Londra segna il definitivo ritorno della Belstaff
ai vertici: il mito della Fenice, raffigurata nel marchio aziendale mentre spicca il volo, si
perpetua e la rinascita è completata.
Nel 2005 e nel 2006 altre prestigiose case cinematografiche internazionali si rivolgono alla
Belstaff per la realizzazione dei costumi: “The Departed” con Leonardo Di Caprio, “X Men”
sono alcune delle produzioni con cui la Belstaff collabora.
Nel 2005 la Belstaff rientra dopo tanti anni di assenza nel settore “Pure Motorcycle” con
una collezione destinata ai migliori punti vendita di abbigliamento tecnico da moto. Il
successo immediato sottolinea il grande ritorno.
In questo settore nel 2006 viene presentato il nuovo importante brevetto internazionale:
Q.A.S (Quick Adjustment System®) che tramite l’utilizzo di speciali scorrevoli ruote consente
di adattare istantaneamente la vestibilità dei capi al loro utilizzo.
La Belstaff rimane l’unico custode della tradizione dell’abbigliamento protettivo, un
patrimonio di antiche e moderne conoscenze, di tecnica, design e moda.

Combined with a micro-porous membrane, which creates a waterproof barrier and
at the same time wicks away the body moisture through microscopic holes, it
ensures the highest possible degree of protection to motorcyclists.

Belflex. This is a fabric made with a very strong yarn, coated on the back and thus
waterproof. It has good design features and a pleasant hand.
Replica nylon jackets are then undergo to a special treatment, giving the garment
the final vintage look.
Most of the styles made in this nylon are also seam-sealed, so that they are totally
waterproof.

the “Ballistic Fabric-Hooker”. This fabric epitomizes the research purpose with its
outstanding features: excellent resistance to penetration, durability of appearance
and superior fit. These features make the garments particularly suitable for those
who want to have complete freedom of movement, including fast and sudden
movements, without giving up to excellent protection against impact and sharp
items.
In this new collection, we chose to use the lighter “summer” version, which
maintains anyway all the features above.

� Leather is world-wide known to offer the highest degree of protection to the
motorcyclist. Its characteristics of comfort, protection, wear-resistance and
breathability are still unsurpassed even today. Belstaff has a long tradition in the
production of leather garments, having produced jackets, trousers and motorcycle
leathers since the 1930’s.
In the Pure Motorcycle 2012 NORTH CIRCULAR ROAD collection, Belstaff proposes
the light, full grain, cow leather, 0,9-1 mm thick, subject to ageing treatment.
The heavier, full grain, cow leather, 1,3-1,4 mm thick, has been used in the styles
of ROUTE 66 collection. Even in this case the leather has been treated to give the
garment an aged look.
� Com’è noto, la pelle è il miglior materiale per la protezione del motociclista. Le
sue caratteristiche di comfort, protezione, traspirabilità e resistenza all’attrito
rimangono ad oggi insuperate. Belstaff ha una grande tradizione di capi in

a trattamento di invecchiamento.

� It is 100% cotton, soaked in and coated with waxes making it waterproof, without compromising
its natural characteristics of good-fitting, comfort and freshness. Wax Cotton comes from the maritime
tradition, since it was originally used for ships’ sails and for dockers’ waterproofs. From the 1930’s
onwards, it was also used to make waterproof sportswear for use in bad weather conditions. Belstaff
was one of the first producers to work with Wax Cotton, improving it over the years, and using
different weights for the different seasons and usages. In the Pure Motorcycle 2012 collection, we
find the Wax Cotton 10 oz, expressly developed and introduced in 2007 for the motorcycle collection,
and the classic 8 oz. Besides the carry-over, best-selling styles Classic Tourist Trophy jacket and
Brooklands blouson, a new man style in the 8 oz type has been introduced. It is the legendary
Trialmaster Replica jacket, a newly updated version, combining the technical requirements of a
motorcycle garment with the extraordinary aesthetic characteristics of the old style. Wax Cotton
waterproof coating needs to be periodically restored by means of a proper treatment. Before exposing
the jacket to heavy rain, it strongly suggested to wax all main stitching.

Motorcycle 2012 sono presenti il wax cotton 10 oz, studiato e
introdotto nel 2007 appositamente per la collezione moto, ed
il classico 8 oz. Oltre ai best-sellers continuativi Classic Tourist
Trophy jacket e Brooklands blouson, è stato inserito nella
nuova collezione un nuovo modello da uomo nel peso 8
oz. Si tratta della leggendaria Trialmaster Replica jacket,
in versione aggiornata, che combina i requisiti tecnici di
un capo “moto” con le straordinarie caratteristiche
estetiche del vecchio modello. L’impermeabilità del
Wax Cotton va periodicamente ripristinata tramite
apposito trattamento. In particolare, prima di
esporsi a piogge insistenti, è fortemente consigliato
di passare con la cera su tutte le cuciture
