EMU: A GUARANTEE
OF QUALITY
EMU expresses its vast technical skills through
the use of an innovative, surface-treating
procedure aimed at guaranteeing the utmost
durability of products over time. This procedure,
known as “EMU Coat”, was perfected in
collaboration with the most important companies
in the chemical sector and the Engineering
Departments of the Universities of Rome and
Trent. This procedure enables EMU to create
products that are extremely scratch-resistant as
well as resistant to UV rays and the most extreme
atmospheric agents. In the initial phase, material
is scoured, zinc-coated and then coated with a
layer of phosphate micro-crystals to guarantee
high resistance to corrosive elements.
Following this pre-treatment, furniture undergoes
a process of cathodic electro-plating called
catophoresis in which the paint is applied

by the use of a continuous electric field. Lastly,
powder painting a layer of coloured polyester
paint is applied to furniture and after a final firing
stage the furniture piece assumes its final aspect.
Polyester-based paints used by EMU have been
specifically formulated for outdoor use and offer
optimized colour retention and durability while
ensuring the great practicality of products can
be easily cleaned and require little maintenance.
Emu products are guaranteed for 2 years against
structural defects and invasive rust.

contribuisce allo sviluppo del territorio locale e
riduce drasticamente le emissioni nocive dovute
al trasporto delle merci. L’impatto sull’ambiente
relativo al trasporto dei prodotti EMU in Europa,
è infatti notevolmente minore rispetto a prodotti
importati dall’Asia, grazie ad una drastica
riduzione del Carbon Footprint.

Informazioni sui materiali
Prospetto analitico descrittivo delle proprietà
fisico-chimiche relative ai materiali impiegati nella
realizzazione dei prodotti EMU.
Acciaio
Lega di ferro e carbonio, con percentuale di
carbonio inferiore al 2%, l’acciaio presenta proprietà
che variano in base alla composizione chimica
(quantità di carbonio e quantità di altri elementi
leganti), ai trattamenti termoindurenti e al processo
di produzione. Oltre che con la scelta dell’acciaio,
EMU esprime il ricco know-how tecnologico
aziendale attraverso innovativi procedimenti
di protezione della superficie brevettati in
collaborazione con le maggiori industrie chimiche
di settore. Nella prima fase il materiale base viene
sgrassato, decapato, attivato e ricoperto con uno
strato fosfatico microcristallino che permette, dopo
verniciatura, elevate prestazioni anticorrosive.
Dopo questo pretrattamento iniziale, il mobile viene
verniciato con un processo di elettrodeposizione
catodica (cataforesi) che costituisce il più avanzato
risultato tecnologico della protezione dei metalli
mediante verniciatura e prevede una vasca ad
immersione in cui il prodotto verniciante è diluito
con acqua e la sua deposizione sul materiale da
trattare è realizzata per effetto di un campo elettrico
continuo. Al mobile, ricoperto di un film omogeneo
di cataforesi spesso 30 micron, è applicato,
mediante polveri, uno spessore di circa 80 micron
di poliestere colorato che, dopo una nuova fase di
cottura, fa assumere al mobile l’aspetto definitivo.
Alluminio
Elemento chimico non presente in natura allo
stato puro, l’alluminio è un metallo malleabile e
duttile (secondo metallo per duttilità e sesto per
malleabilità). La combinazione di resistenza alla
corrosione - dovuta al fitto strato di allumina che si
forma sulla sua superficie quando esposto all’aria

- e di basso peso specifico ne fanno una risorsa
notevole per l’industria, che lo impiega in molteplici
applicazioni. La speciale lega di alluminio utilizzata
nei prodotti EMU è scelta per assicurare la massima
resistenza possibile alla corrosione per accrescere le
proprietà meccaniche del metallo. La ricca presenza
in percentuale di silicio ha la funzione di aumentare
la capacità di scorrevolezza del materiale nella fase
di stampaggio, l’aggiunta di rame ha un marcato
effetto sulla resistenza alla corrosione, mentre il
manganese e lo zinco accrescono la lavorabilità del
metallo. Il prodotto subisce inoltre, a garanzia di
una prestazione ottimale, avanzati trattamenti di
protezione superficiali.

EMU Wicker
Consiste in un filo a sezioni rettangolari o rotonde
ottenuto per estrusione di materie plastiche
composto da polimeri termoplastici. L’aggiunta di
additivi perfeziona la prestazione di questi materiali
garantendone una sorprendente inattacabilità dagli
agenti atmosferici. Questa fibra sintetica coniuga
qualità estetiche estremamente simili a quelle
delle fibre naturali ai vantaggi propri dei materiali
artificiali. EMU Wicker assicura una resistenza
perfetta all’esposizione esterna: è inattacabile dai
raggi ultravioletti, termoresistente, non teme la
corrosione degli agenti atmosferici né l’abrasione.
Il fascino naturale del materiale viene preservato
ed esaltato dalle fasi di produzione degli arredi,
durante le quali viene intrecciato a mano su ogni
singolo pezzo di arredo e lavorato nel rispetto della
più antica tradizione artigianale.
Tessuto acrilico
Per tessuto acrilico si intende una fibra il cui
elemento di base è una catena di polimeri
composta all’85% da acrilonitrile. La fibra acrilica
unisce alle qualità estetiche di un tessuto lussuoso,
dalla corposità e dal touch assimilabili a quelli della
lana, le qualità funzionali di resistenza agli agenti
atmosferici: resiste ai raggi UV, non si macchia
e non imputridisce all’acqua grazie alla velocità
di asciugatura.
Teak
Tradizionale legno impiegato nell’arredo da esterni
dal fascino esotico intramontabile, il teak è un legno
duro ad alto contenuto di olio adatto all’uso esterno
senza necessità di trattamento di verniciatura.
Estremamente longevo, è praticamente inalterabile
EMU-Tex (telo da esterni)
Telo portante fabbricato tramite processo di
termosaldatura, è realizzato con filo in polivinile
ed anima in fibra di poliestere. Ha caratteristiche
di eccezionale robustezza a garanzia di una
durata perfetta nel tempo: massima resistenza
ai raggi ultravioletti, agenti atmosferici, sbalzi
di temperatura.
Tessuto in poliestere
È una fibra formata da macromolecole lineari
costituite prevalentemente da polietilentereftalato.
Ha elevate caratteristiche meccaniche: resiste alla
rottura, alla luce, all’abrasione, non si deforma in
modo permanente, ha un ottimo recupero elastico
ed è idrorepellente. Il poliestere utilizzato da EMU
ha una resistenza di livello 4 ad acqua e luce
secondo lo standard BSEN.
Cristallo temperato
Cristallo temperato in conformità con le normative
internazionali BS 6206 e prodotto nel rispetto
della normativa BS 7376.

Analytical and descriptive overview of the physicalchemical properties of the materials used in the
making of EMU products.
Steel
Metal owes its characteristics of mechanical resistance
to the particular bonds between the atoms of the
substance. Among the metals, Steel is the main
product of the Iron and Steel industry, used in a
variety of ways depending on the different types
of steel produced. An alloy of both Iron and Carbon,
with a percentage of Carbon less than 2%, steel
presents properties that vary on the basis of its
chemical composition ( the quantity of carbon,
its distribution in the Iron, the quantities of other
elements), from thermosetting treatments and the
production process. In the manufacturing of its
products, EMU uses an alloy of Steel, Carbon Fe37
and expresses the potential of the rich technological
know- how, using innovative procedures of surface
treatments patented in collaboration with the major
chemical industries of the sector. In the first phase the
base material is degreased, pickled, activated and
covered with a layer of phosphatic micro-crystalline
that allows, after varnishing, a high anti-corrosive
performance. After these initial pre-treatments the
furniture is varnished with a process of cathode
electrodeposition (cataphoresis) which is the most
technologically advanced method of protecting the
metals by means of varnishing, where a dipping tank
in which the surface coating is diluted with water
and its deposition on the material to be treated is
carried out through the effect of a continuous electric
field. The furniture covered by a homogenous film
of cataphoresis 30 μ is applied with, a thickness
of about 80 μ of coloured polyester in powder form
which, after a further phase of firing, gives the
furniture its final appearance.
Aluminium
A chemical element that does not exist in a pure
state in nature, aluminium is a malleable and
ductile metal (the second most ductile and the sixth
most malleable). Its typical resistance to corrosion
and oxidation, due to a thick layer of Alumina that
forms on its surface when it is exposed to air and
its characteristic low weight make it an important
resource for industry, used in multiple applications
and in particular in the production of outdoor
furnishings. The special alloy of Aluminium used
in EMU products is devised to ensure the maximum
resistance to corrosion possible and to increase
the mechanical properties of the metal, through
the careful selection of alloying materials and their
chemical composition. To be specific, the high
percentage of Silicon has the function of increasing
the fluidity of the materials in the phase of forging;
the adding of Copper and Iron has a marked effect
on the resistance to corrosion while the Magnesium
and Zinc increasing the workability of the metal.
To guarantee optimal performance the metal
also undergoes advanced treatments of surface
protection.
EMU Wicker
This consists of a “filament” with a rectangular or
round cross-section, obtained by extruding plastic
materials consisting of thermoplastic polymers.
Additives improves further the performance levels
of these materials, ensuring surprising resistance to
weathering. This synthetic fibre combines aesthetic
qualities extremely similar to those of natural fibres
with the advantages typicalcharacteristic of synthetic
materials. EMU Wicker ensures perfect resistance to
exposure to outdoor conditions. It is resistant to both
UV light, and heat, it is not subject to corrosion due
to weathering or abrasion. The natural charm of the
material is retained and enhanced by the production
process of the furniture, during which this material
is woven by hand on each item of furniture and
processed worked in accordance with ancient craft
traditions.
Teak
Traditional wood used in outdoor furnishing of
undying exotic charm.Teak is a hardwood with
a high oil content, suitable for external use without
the necessity of varnishing treatment. Extremely
long-lasting, it is practically unalterable to repeated
exposure to atmospheric factors. If not treated, the
surface takes a silver-grey coating which is the
natural protection from inside the wood, considered
an essential part of teak’s charm.
EMU-Tex (fabric for outdoor use)
A load-bearing fabric made by the process of
thermal bonding, it is a PVC coated woven yarn.
Its exceptional robust characteristics guarantee
a long lasting durability: maximum resistance
to ultraviolet rays, atmospheric factors, sudden
changes in temperature.
Acrylic fabric
Acrylic fabric refers to a fibre, the basic element
of which is a chain of polymers consisting of 85%
acrylonitrile. Acrylic fibre combines the aesthetic
qualities of a luxurious fabric, the substance
and feel of which are similar to those of wool,
with functional qualities in terms of resistance to
weathering: it withstands UV light, it is stain-proof
and, thanks to the speed with which it dries, it
will not rot following exposure to water.
Polyester fabric
This refers to a fibre made of linear macromolecules
consisting mainly of polyethylene terephtalate.
It has outstanding material features: it is resistant
to light as well as being resistant to tearing and
abrasion, is not subject to permanent deformation,
has excellent elasticity recovery and is waterrepellent. The polyester used by EMU has level 4
resistance to water and light as measured under
the BS EN standard.
Tempered crystal glass
Tempered crystal glass that complies to the
International standards BS 6206 and produced
in compliance to standard BS 7376.

Uso e manutenzione
La corrispondenza ad alti standard qualitativi e
funzionali dei materiali impiegati costituisce la
garanzia principale della robustezza e resistenza nel
tempo dei prodotti dell’azienda. Un comportamento
rispettoso di norme di manutenzione ed uso, come
specificato di seguito, assicura la perfetta riuscita di
questi articoli, concepiti, come da qualità EMU, per
durare a lungo nel tempo.
Acciaio Inox
Attenzione:
a) NON USARE i seguenti prodotti su parti in acciaio
inox:
• Candeggina o detersivi contenenti candeggina
(possono corrodere l’acciaio inox)
• Acido cloridrico o prodotti contenenti cloruro
(possono corrodere l’acciaio inox)
b) Sale, calcare o acido (da caffè, vino, succo
d’arancia, succo di pomodoro, limone, etc) possono
scolorare le parti in acciaio inox non prontamente
pulite.
c) Prodotti o parti in acciaio inox usati in riva al
mare o nell’arredo interno di piscine richiedono più
frequenti pulizie per rimuovere i depositi di cloruro
e prevenire la corrosione e l’attacco chimico della
superficie esterna.
d) Macchie o ruggine che si presentano sulla
superficie di acciaio inox devono essere
prontamente pulite.
e) Macchie lasciate a lungo possono divenire
permanenti
f) La ruggine può attaccare chimicamente o scavare
l’acciaio inox.
Rimozione di macchie o ruggine:
• Applicare un detersivo/polish non abrasivo
specifico per l’acciaio inox
• Test su una poco appariscente macchia per
assicurarsi che l’originale finitura superficiale non
sia alterata
• Ricordarsi di strofinare in senso lineare (non in
maniera circolare)
• Non usare tamponi abrasivi
• Sciacquare abbondantemente con acqua pulita
• Alla fine asciugare bene per prevenire striature,
strofinare nel senso delle fibre.
Metalli verniciati: Ferro - Alluminio
Per la pulizia delle superfici in metallo verniciato
utilizzare acqua fredda e detergenti liquidi non
abrasivi e non aggressivi. Applicare con panno
morbido. È consigliabile, in caso di superfici molto
sporche e/o invecchiate, di trattare, dopo la fase di
pulizia, con olio di vaselina. Applicare con panno
morbido per rivitalizzare le superfici. Nell’eventualità
di macchie dovute a depositi calcarei, passare
un panno con soluzione di aceto bianco diluito
in acqua fredda. Prima della stagione invernale
eseguire una fase di pulizia e quindi trattare
superfici, parti mobili e viti con olio di vaselina,
utilizzando un panno morbido. Non stoccare i tavoli
ponendo i piani a diretto contatto tra di loro e riporre
il mobile in luoghi asciutti e riparati. Piccoli graffi o
danneggiamenti delle superfici verniciate, dovuti a
trasporto, usi impropri o movimentazione, possono
essere ritoccati e protetti dalla corrosione con
apposita vernice, disponibile presso EMU Group e/o
punti vendita autorizzati.
Legni: Teak
La formazione della patina grigio argento può
essere impedita nella fase iniziale di vita del
prodotto applicando con un panno, sulle superfici
esposte, una soluzione di acqua e olio incolore, per
teak. L’olio deve essere molto diluito. Quando la
superficie è asciutta, lucidare con panno di juta.
Macchie superficiali dovute a olio o altri prodotti
alimentari possono essere rimosse intervenendo
in modo tempestivo, prima che il legno possa
assorbirle in profondità. Carteggiare la superficie
interessata e successivamente lucidare con panno
di juta ruvido.
Tessuti sintetici: EMU-Tex (telo da esterni)
e Poliestere
Evitare il contatto prolungato con sostanze grasse
e/o coloranti che potrebbero venire assorbite dal
materiale di rivestimento e dare luogo a macchie
permanenti, oltre che deteriorare la struttura del
filato. Non usare solventi o detergenti a base di
solventi (evitare l’acetone). Utilizzare acqua e
detergenti liquidi non abrasivi con PH neutro e
incolori. Eventualmente lasciare agire il detergente
alcuni minuti. Sciacquare abbondantemente con
acqua a temperatura non superiore a 30°C. Nel
caso di utilizzo di dispositivi a pressione, tenere la
punta del diffusore ad una distanza di almeno 60 /
70 cm dalla superficie del manufatto. Se necessario
ripetere l’operazione.
Ombrelloni
Prima di iniziare la manovra di apertura accertarsi
che il telo dell’ombrellone non sia impigliato nelle
stecche interne. Per aprire o chiudere gli ombrelloni
girare le manovelle nel senso indicato dalle frecce
e dalle diciture “apre” o “chiude”: errate manovre
possono rompere la corda o il meccanismo. Non
forzare mai le funi o le manovelle: se c’è un blocco
accertarsi della sua origine e rimuovere l’eventuale
causa. Per i cod. 946, 947 e 990, ad ombrellone
aperto, inserire la catenella di sicurezza. Telo in
dralon e telo in poliestere: lavare a mano in acqua
tiepida (40°C) con detersivo per tessuti delicati.
Trattare le macchie oleose o acquose con spugna o
spazzola morbida, sciacquare a fondo ed asciugare
all’ombra. Per macchie più resistenti utilizzare
detergenti delicati o smacchiatori. Assicurarsi che
la copertura sia completamente asciutta prima
di riporla. Non centrifugare, evitare il lavaggio a
secco. Durante la stagione invernale si consiglia
di rimuovere dalla struttura e riporre il telo
completamente asciutto. Palo in legno: applicare
almeno una volta ogni anno un impregnante ceroso.
Corde e parti meccaniche: trattare con olio di
vaselina una volta ogni anno prima della stagione
invernale. Chiudere gli ombrelloni in presenza di
avverse condizioni metereologiche quali vento e
pioggia di forte intensità. Gli ombrelloni EMU sono
associabili a specifici basamenti che permettono
il loro staffaggio. Se si sceglie di posizionarli solo
tramite zavorra si certifica la loro idoneità ad un
uso normale in condizioni di vento moderato. Nella
tabella che segue, vengono riportate le indicazioni
sui pesi minimi delle zavorre. La fase di installazione
dell’ombrellone e la sua gestione è responsabilità
esclusiva del Cliente.
Altre istruzioni generali per l’uso del prodotto
Su sedie e poltrone evitare gli usi impropri quali:
salirvi in piedi, dondolarsi sulle gambe, sedersi
sullo schienale, sedersi sui braccioli e utilizzare il
prodotto come scaletta. Alla fine del suo utilizzo non
disperdere il mobile nell’ambiente, ma chiamare le
aziende preposte allo smaltimento di rifiuti solidi e
urbani per il suo trasporto in discarica o recupero.
Garanzia
I prodotti della linea EMU sono garantiti per 2 anni da:
- difetti strutturali non dovuti a uso improprio
o mancata manutenzione;
- ruggine invasiva non derivata da graffi o abrasioni
da uso e non asportabile con una normale pulizia
e manutenzione;
- deterioramento chimico della fibra EMU Wicker®.

Sono esclusi dalla garanzia danni alla fibra come
tagli ed abrasioni non rilevati al momento della
consegna o derivanti da uso improprio. Qualora si
intendesse avvalersi della garanzia, è necessario
presentare l’articolo difettoso o evidenze oggettive
del difetto (foto) e lo scontrino/fattura di acquisto
al rivenditore. EMU Group S.p.A. declina ogni
responsabilità per danni causati a cose o a persone
derivanti da un uso non corretto del prodotto.
La garanzia non comprende alcun tipo di assistenza
o riparazione del prodotto o a parti di esso
danneggiate.
Use and maintenance
The connection between the high qualitative
and functional standards of the materials used,
constitutes the main guarantee of the sturdiness
and the resistance of the company’s products over
time. Respecting the rules of maintenance and use,
specified as follows, will ensure the success of these
objects, which were devised with EMU quality, to
last a long time.
Stainless steel
Warning:
a) DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS on any
parts made of stainless steel:
• Chlorine bleach or detergents containing bleach
(they can corrode stainless steel)
• Hydrochloric acid or products containing chlorides
(they can corrode stainless steel)
b) Salt, limestone or acids (contained in coffee,wine,
orange juice, tomato juice, lemon, etc.) may discolour
parts made of stainless steel if nor cleaned promptly.
c) Products or parts made of stainless steel used
near the seaside or for the interior decoration of
swimming pools require more frequent cleaning in
order to remove chlorites deposited on them and to
prevent corrosion and chemical deterioration of the
external surfaces.
d) Stains or rust noted on stainless steel surfaces
must be cleaned promptly.
e) Stains left in place for long periods may become
permanent.
f) Rust may cause chemical reactions or corrode
stainless steel.
To remove stains or rust:
• Apply a specific non-abrasive detergent or polish
for stainless steel.
• Test the product on a stain in a place that is not
easily visible to make sure that the original surface
finish has not been damaged.
• Remember to rub in a linear direction (not circular).
• Do not use abrasive pads.
• Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
• Lastly, dry thoroughly in order to prevent streaks
from occurring, rubbing in the sense of the fibres.
Varnished metals
To clean surfaces in varnished metals, use cold
water and non-abrasive or aggressive liquid
detergents. Apply with a soft cloth. In the case of
very dirty and/or aged surfaces, after cleaning, it is
advisable to treat them with liquid paraffin. Apply
with a soft cloth to revitalize the surfaces. In the
event of stains caused by lime deposits on varnishes
of coarse structure (eg. antique iron and indian
brown) clean them with a cloth and a solution of
white wine vinegar diluted in cold water. Before
winter, carry out the cleaning phase and then treat
the surfaces, moving parts and screws with liquid
paraffin, using a soft cloth. Do not store the tables
putting table tops in direct contact with each other
and where possible, put the furniture in a dry and
sheltered place. Small scratches or damage to the
varnished surfaces due to transportation, improper
use or handling can be retouched and protected
from corrosion with special varnishes, available at
EMU GROUP and/or authorised dealers.
Wood: Teak
The formation of the silver grey coating can be
impeded at the beginning of the product’s life by
applying a solution of water and colourless oil for
teak, to exposed surfaces with a cloth. The oil must
be highly diluted. When the surface is dry, polish
with a jute cloth. Superficial stains caused by oil or
other food products can be removed by intervening
in time, before the wood can fully absorb them.
Gently sand the surface in question and then polish
with a rough jute cloth.
Synthetic fabrics: EMU-Tex (fabric for
outdoor use) and polyester
Avoid prolonged contact with oily substances and/
or dyes that could be absorbed by the covering
material in PVC and cause permanent stains, in
addition to damaging the structure of the thread.
Do not use solvents or solvent-based detergents
(avoid acetone). Use water and non-abrasive,
colourless liquid detergents with a neutral PH. Let
the detergent act for a few minutes. Rinse well
with water no warmer than 30C. In the case you
are using a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at a
distance of at least 60/70 cm from the surface of
the manufactured good. If necessary, repeat the
operation.
Other Instructions for general use of the product
On seats and sofas, avoid improper use such
as: putting your feet on the chairs, swinging the
seats on their back legs, sitting on the back rest
(especially if it is made of fabric only), sitting on
the armrests and using the product as a ladder. At
the end of its use, do not dump the furniture in the
environment but contact the companies responsible
for the disposal of solid and municipal waste, for its
transfer to the Tip or its eventual recovery.
Sunshades
Before starting to open the umbrella, make sure that
the fabric has not got caught in the internal ribs. To
open or close the umbrella, turn the handle in the
direction indicated by the arrows and the works
“Open” or “Close”. Incorrect operation could tear the
string or damage the mechanism. Never force the
ropes or handles. If they get stuck, check why this
has happened and eliminate the possible cause.
For umbrellas code numbers 946, 947 and 990,
when the umbrella is open, secure the safety chain
in place. Dralon or polyester fabrics: hand-wash
in lukewarm water (40°C) using a detergent for
delicate fabrics. Treat any oily or watery stains
with a sponge or soft brush, rinse thoroughly and
dry in the shade. For more persistent stains use
a gentle detergent or stain remover. Make sure
that the fabric is completely dry before putting it
away. Do not spin dry. Avoid dry cleaning. For the
winter, it is advisable to remove the fabric from
the structure and allow it to dry completely before
putting it away. Wooden pole: apply a wax-based
wood-stainer at least once a year before the winter
season. Close the umbrella when the weather
conditions are unsuitable, i.e. strong wind or heavy
rain. EMU umbrellas can be combined with special
bases enabling them to be bracketed into place.
If it is decided to position an EMU umbrella using
ballast only, their suitability for use in conditions
of moderate wind is certified. The following table
indicates the minimum ballast weights. The Customer
is the sole party responsible for installing and
managing the umbrella.
Warranty
The products of the EMU line are offered with
a two-years warranty against:
- structural faults not resulting from improper use
or lack of maintenance;
- invasive corrosion not produced by scratches
or abrasions from use and not removable through
normal cleaning and maintenance;
- chemical decay of the EMU Wicker® fibre.
Any damage to the fibre such as cuts and abrasions
not found upon delivery or resulting from improper
use shall be excluded. In the case which the
warranty is claimed, the faulty item or objective
evidence of the fault (pictures) must be submitted
together with the sales receipt/invoice from the
retailer. EMU Group S.p.A. declines any liability for
any damage to properties or individuals deriving
from an incorrect use of the product. The warranty
does not include any kind of assistance or repair
of the product or any damaged part thereof.
