Dire che lo Scapa Flow sia un bel posto è una responsabilità che non mi posso prendere.
Diciamo pure che il panorama non ha niente di accattivante.
Se poi dovessimo esprimerci da marinai mediterranei lo Scapa Flow lo definiremmo un posto di
m..., specialmente da quando ci si trovano le strutture per l’importazione e l’esportazione del

petrolio britannico del Mare del Nord. Senza pensare alle decine di navi affondate e alle tombe
sommerse di migliaia di marinai.
Lassù fa freddo anche quando fa caldo, ci sono grandi maree e quindi grandi correnti, l’acqua
non è mai trasparente e sulla terra, l’eterno vento gelido scoraggia gli alberi dal viverci.
Le isole che lo racchiudono, le Orcadi, le ho visitate molte volte facendo sosta nel porto di
Kirkwall, la capitale. Per i passeggeri era una sosta di cultura geografica e storica.
In questo posto remoto si sono verificati orribili fatti di guerra, l’ultimo dei quali all’inizio del
secondo conflitto mondiale, ma esiste anche un sublime simbolo di pace. Non racconterò le
vicende perchè sono già scritte e descritte nei saggi e nei rapporti storici di cui vi do qui in fondo
alcune referenze.
Voglio invece attrarre l’attenzione sul gesto nautico (ripeto: nautico) e non bellico, del
Comandante tedesco del sommergibile U47, Gunther Prien. Questo personaggio non passò
alla celebrità internazionale per vari motivi. Intanto correva per la parte sbagliata, quella che ha
perso la guerra. Inoltre gli storici britannici non enfatizzarono di sicuro la sua impresa che
ridicolizzò l’organizzazione della più gloriosa marina da guerra del mondo.
Infine il Comandante Prien morì meno di due anni dopo la sua grande impresa affondando col
suo sommergibile durante una “normale” operazione navale nelle acque Islandesi. Fu un
cacciatorpediniere britannico che prevalse in quel duello.
Non ho mai capito perchè Prien non fu mai promosso a incarichi superiori dopo il suo successo
nello Scapa Flow. La portentosa macchina della propaganda nazista si limitò a farne un eroe
pubblico subito dopo l’evento pubblicando le foto a pranzo con Hitler e i servizi cinematografici,
le sue interviste ed i suoi promemoria. Ma lo lasciarono continuare a svolgere il compito di
