Orlando Bloom turned 30 earlier this
year. This was an important landmark for
the young British actor, whose resumé1
includes Troy, Kingdom of Heaven and
two highly successful trilogies, namely2
Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. Bloom met the press in order
to promote the last of the three Pirate
movies, At World’s End. In addition to
discussing the movie, he spoke about his
commitment3 to the ecological cause:

I just got back from Antarctica and it
was kind of fascinating to see, really,
what was at stake4. The environment
is such a massive issue5 that we all
kind of think it’s doom and gloom6 –
but, you know, it’s all or nothing, but,
actually, I don’t think that’s the case7.
You can be somebody who drives an
SUV8. That’s fine, but there’s a
balance, so if you do that, then
maybe use energy-efficient light
bulbs9 at home, or just be conscious
of switching off lights10, or, if you
can afford to drive an SUV, maybe you
can afford to make a donation to a
wind farm11, or... plant some trees
or... it’s all about balance, you know,
if you think of the ice caps12 as the
fridge of our planet: if your fridge at
home died, the food that you eat
would go rotten13 and you’d starve14.
So it’s just about balance, really. And
my home in London is sort of... I’m
figuring out15 using solar panels, but,
again, all my light bulbs will be
energy-efficient, and I’ll just do what
you can, you know, it’s a balance, I
think, that’s the important thing.

And it’s going to be fun, I’m really
looking forward to it, I know what I’m
capable of and I’m not afraid to make
some mistakes along the way. When
you’ve been a part of so much
success, I think people just keep
associating you with success and then,
if you make a step wrong, then it’s
like they shoot you down. So that it
feels like there can be more at stake
but, really, as I’m turning 30 and
growing up and realising there’s really
nothing at stake, I’ve got nothing to
lose, you know, and everything to gain
at this point, so, yeah.

Orlando Bloom was born in
Canterbury on January 13th,
1977. At 16 he joined the National
Youth Theatre and later attended
Guildhall School of Music and
Drama. In 1998 he broke his back
after falling from a building; in 1999
he was discovered by Lord of the
Rings director, Peter Jackson.

Bloom has also announced that he wants
to take a break from movies and to work
in the theatre. Does he feel that he is
becoming more mature, in the same way
that, in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, he ends up being a captain:

At school I was like captain of sports
and stuff16 and I always felt that like,
when I was growing up and, actually,
all of the attention that I got very
quickly, after doing like Lord of the
Rings, I think it actually put me more
into a shell17, for a while. It made me
a little more shy because I was
slightly18... it was very new and I
wasn’t sure how to deal with it19 and I
think I’m still learning to come out of
that shell, and part of this trilogy
coming to a close and moving into
other work is... and doing theatre and
stuff is, for me, is to get that
