The recurrent theme is (not surprisingly) that of tragic love. Starting with his Sixth Book of Madrigals, the author turned to stile concertato which employs instrumental accompaniment with elements of dramatic action. The work can thus be perceived as an imaginary borderline between Renaissance and Early Baroque in music. Monteverdi produced several musical versions of Rinuccini’s Lamento d’Arianna; this programme features the madrigal one. According to period accounts the composition often moved listeners to tears.
