The exhibition includes a section
entitled Alexander Calder in the
Photographs of Ugo Mulas, curated
by Pier Giovanni Castagnoli
for the Archivio Ugo Mulas in
Milan, partner in the development
of the project. The great Italian
photographer Ugo Mulas (1928Ugo Mulas, Alexander Calder con Edgar Varèse

1973) devoted most of his career
to art, using his lens as a full-fledged critical eye to explore artists’ behavior and
their mindset. He was bound to Calder by the solid and lasting friendship that
shines through his formidable corpus of work. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni
hosts a selection of some 80 pictures, all of them printed using silver nitrate on
barium paper, created by the photographer himself between 1963 and 1968 on
the basis of photographs that he took in the artist’s studio homes in Roxbury,
Connecticut and in Saché, France, as well as in other locations which witnessed
the presence of Calder and his works.

Nell’ambito della mostra è allestita la sezione intitolata Alexander Calder nelle
fotografie di Ugo Mulas, curata da Pier Giovanni Castagnoli per l’Archivio Ugo
Mulas di Milano, in collaborazione con il quale il progetto è stato realizzato.
Il grande fotografo italiano (1928-1973) dedicò gran parte del suo impegno
all’arte, sintetizzando con il suo obiettivo, un vero e proprio occhio critico, il
comportamento degli artisti e i loro processi mentali. A Calder lo legò una solida
e intramontata amicizia testimoniata da un formidabile corpus di opere. Al
Palazzo delle Esposizioni è esposta una selezione di circa ottanta immagini, tutte
stampe ai sali d’argento su carta baritata, realizzate dallo stesso autore risalenti
agli anni 1963-1968, scattate nelle case-studio abitate dall’artista a Roxbury nel
Connecticut o a Saché in Francia,
ma anche in altri luoghi che videro
la presenza di Calder o delle sue
opere. 23

Per la prima volta la città di Roma dedica un’importante
mostra, organizzata dall’Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, al
noto artista americano nato a Lawnton in Pennsylvania
nel 1898 e deceduto a New York nel 1976, autore
dei Mobile, icone tra le più celebri della modernità.
Esuberanza, allegria, vigore e umorismo inteso come
forza vitale, questi i tratti assegnati a Calder da James
Johnson Sweeney nel catalogo della retrospettiva
al Museum of Modern Art di New York nel 1943, la
mostra che consacrò l’artista tra i principali interpreti
del suo tempo. Dopo una laurea in ingegneria, gli studi
all’Art Students League di New York e una protratta
immersione nell’avanguardia parigina durante gli anni
venti, nel decennio successivo Calder realizzò i suoi
primi Mobile, cui fu Marcel Duchamp a dare il nome. In
queste sculture, destinate
a essere investite
da un’enorme
popolarità,
l’artista
armonizzò
forma, colore
e movimento
in un insieme
essenziale,
concepito
dallo
stesso Calder come un
“universo”, nel quale “ogni elemento
può muoversi, spostarsi, oscillare avanti
e indietro in un rapporto mutevole con
ciascuno degli altri elementi”.
Al Palazzo delle Esposizioni sono esposte
oltre centocinquanta opere provenienti da
importanti collezioni pubbliche e private
e dalla Fondazione Calder, articolate in un
itinerario cronologico mirato a indagare l’intero
percorso creativo dell’artista. È in mostra una
cospicua selezione dei suoi lavori più importanti,
comprese alcune delle sculture esposte al Museum
of Modern Art nel 1943. Sono, inoltre, presentati

anche aspetti meno noti del suo lavoro, con gruppi di
opere raramente visibili dal grande pubblico. Aprono
il percorso espositivo le sculture in filo di ferro (Wire
Sculpture) di acrobati, animali e ritratti, realizzate
soprattutto negli anni venti a Parigi, in alcune delle quali
per la prima volta è contemplato il movimento in una
dimensione di divertita ironia.
Una serie meno nota di piccoli bronzi del 1930 con
figure di contorsionisti e acrobati permette di osservare
come l’artista abbia declinato l’idea di movimento
tramite la sperimentazione di
tecniche diverse. L’adesione
di Calder all’astrattismo,
avvenuta dopo la visita allo
studio parigino di Mondrian, è
documentata da un’importante
selezione di opere. Attraverso
alcuni capolavori realizzati
intorno alla metà degli anni
trenta, si può seguire l’interesse
di Calder per le forme
biomorfiche e la sua vena
surrealista. Focus della mostra
sono i Mobile che l’artista
ha realizzato durante l’intero arco della sua attività,
lavorando artigianalmente le lastre di metallo di fattura
industriale. Ugualmente, è esposta una significativa
selezione di Stabile, le sculture da terra così nominate
da Hans Arp. La pittura, che l’autore ha espresso
soprattutto attraverso il mezzo agile e dinamico della
gouache su carta, è documentata nel suo sviluppo
cronologico.
La mostra si conclude con due distinte sezioni: una
dedicata ai film d’autore su Alexander Calder nella
quale sono proiettati film di Hans Richter (1948),
Herbet Matter (1950) e Carlos Vilardebo (1961) e
un’altra alle fotografie di Ugo Mulas sull’artista.

The City of Rome is to devote
its first ever major exhibition to
Alexander Calder. The exhibition
is being organized by the Azienda
Speciale Palaexpo to celebrate the
famous US artist born in Lawnton,
Pennsylvania in 1898 and who died in New
York in 1976. His Mobiles are some of the
modern era’s most celebrated icons. Exuberance,
buoyancy, vigor and humor as a vitalizing force are
features James Johnson Sweeney attributed to
Calder in the catalogue of a retrospective held at
the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1943. This
was the exhibition that raised Calder to the level of
one of the leading artists of the day. After majoring in
engineering, studying at the Art Students’ League in
New York and immersing himself fully in the Parisian
Avant-Garde movement in the twenties, Calder
went on in the following decade to produce his first
Mobiles, as Marcel Duchamp was to christen them. In
these sculptures, which were to become enormously
popular, the artist harmonically fused shape, color
and movement into an essential whole, in which he
saw “each element able to move, to stir, to oscillate,
to come and go in its relationships with the other
elements in its universe”. The
exhibition at the Palazzo
delle Esposizioni – over
150 works from major
public and private
collections and the Calder
Foundation itself – takes the
form of a chronological journey
designed to explore the artist’s
entire creative cycle. A large selection
of his most important works will be on
display, including some of the sculptures
that were shown at the 1943 exhibition at
the MoMA. The exhibition also looks at some of the
lesser known aspects of his work, with groups of
works that are rarely on display to the general public.

The exhibition
opens with his
Wire Sculptures
of acrobats,
animals and
portraits, most
of which were
created in Paris
in the twenties.
They include his first
attempts to portray movement in an expressive
and wryly ironic mood. A lesser known series of
small bronze figures produced in 1930 showing
contorsionists and acrobats allows the visitor to see
how the artist resorted to different techniques to
experiment in expressing the notion of movement.
An important selection of works also illustrates the
way in which Calder wholeheartedly embraced the
Abstract movement after paying a visit to Mondrian’s
studio in Paris. The visitor is also able to track Calder’s
surrealist vein and his interest in biomorphic shapes
through a series of masterpieces produced in the midthirties. The exhibition is built around the Mobiles that
the artist produced throughout his career, working
industrial metal plates using a craftsman’s technique.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors are able to admire
a selection of the most representative pieces from
different periods. The exhibition is also hosting
a significant selection of Stabiles, free-standing
sculptures that were given their name by Hans
Arp. The exhibition also explores the chronological
development of Calder’s painting, a branch of his art
in which the artist resorted principally to the agile and
dynamic method of gouache on paper. The exhibition
ends with two different sections: one devoted to art
films on Alexander Calder, with the screening of films
by Hans Richter (1948), Herbert Matter (1950) and
Carlos Vilardebo (1961); and the other devoted to Ugo
Mulas’ photographs of the artist and his works.
