F Buone visioni 3 4 presentation FLORENCE QUEER FESTIVAL 2009 lorence Queer Festival 2009: here we are at the fateful 7th year. The festival has grown up much since its 1st edition, till it has become one of the most followed festivals of the Florentine scene and one of the most important GLBT festivals in Italy. We started in 2003 with a small 4 days festival at the Puccini Theatre, and since then we have been moving on, continuously increasing our program, events and audience, passing through the Alfieri and Spaziouno Cinemas to last year come finally to the Odeon, the most prestigious cinema in Florence and become part of the 50 days of International Cinema in Florence. The feedback we have had from the audience in these years have made us aware that we provided an answer to a demand for quality cinema that could give new points of view about gay, lesbian and transgender culture, breaking the borders of our country. Cinema, videos, theatre, photography, literature and custom are the main themes of the path we suggest, to tell about the gay, lesbian and transgender universe, to tell about a queer identity which is continuously changing and transforming, an identity that wants to overcome those stereotypes inside which LGBT culture has been segregated for long: a culture that today is freed from fixed identity groupings, a culture that is able to speak to everyone and able to tell stories where sexual identity is just one of the elements of the narration. Glancing through the titles of the program, one by one, like shelling peas, with a curious gaze, like the one of the cat that is observing us from the 2009 poster of the Festival, we see that there are many surprises waiting for us, F since this festival wants to offer a quality cinema dealing with queer themes that are not able to find a place in conventional distribution channels. At the core of the festival there will be the cinematographic imaginary, with movies coming from the main festivals around the world, all in mother tongue with Italian subtitles, all inedited in Florence. Further more, we have 5 Italian Premiers, 3 of which are European Premieres, at our very own Odeon Cinema. There will be guests: authors and moviemakers with whom we will have the opportunity to discuss and debate. The main themes of the films deal with the confrontation between different cultures, West and East, North and South of the world, with same sex-marriage and adoption as a common and normal choice of life for LGBT persons. There will be a careful consideration about the role that LGBT movements play around the world. A whole day, organized in cooperation with the Health Rights Department of Regione Toscana, is dedicated to AIDS, considering what it meant in the past and what it means today. More than this, there will be shown movies from the moviemaker Rosa von Praunheim, one of the most important representatives of European Gay culture and one of the founder of the Gay political movement in Germany. Trouble-maker and ironical artist, militant and visionary, Rosa, whose name derives from the triangle that homosexuals had to wear in the Nazi concentration camps, will be in Florence with a not-to-be-missed live performance. And still inside the Festival: the 7th edition of the competition Videoqueer, that brings us an overview of new proposals with a selection of LGBT shorts from young videomakers; Queer Theater, with three appointments, among which the first-ever-preview A touch of Pink, featuring Serra Yilmaz, a co-production Florence Queer Festival-Teatro di Rifredi; Queer Books, a series of literature centered meetings, readings and presentations of books organized by Bruno Casini taking place in various venues in town; Queer Art at the ex-church of San Carlo ai Barnabiti in Via St. Agostino with the photo exhibition “Bildmacherin” by the German photographer Anke Merzbach (the curator is Libero Musetti). Finally, at the end of January, we have an entire day dedicated to Queer Cinema at Teatro Giotto in Vicchio di Mugello. All of this has been made possible, thanks to the volunteers from the associations Ireos and Arcilesbica Firenze, thanks to the contribution of Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission, Regione Toscana, Provincia di Firenze, and Comune di Firenze, thanks to the cooperation of the Goethe Institut Mailand and Eventi s.r.l., thanks to the attention of the press and the media. And of course, thanks to the audience faithfully following the festival. Finally, we would like to share with you some fond memories of Derno Ricci, a dear friend who left us a short while ago. The festival hosted in 2005, his last photo exhibition in Florence. Maria Laura Annibali interviews herself and other homosexual women, trying to find ideas and reflections about the past to understand the present and to move into the future. This is a story about the conquest of new freedoms, about the opening to new contradictions and fragmentations. It shows us women who took the chance to speak publicly, women with their own unique personal history, origins and political ideas. With this documentary the author transforms her experience with the LGBT associations in to a narrative and political instrument. Like many his age, he hasn’t found himself. But then, Omer is hardly looking. Instead he chooses to loose himself among the stacks of books at the local library, where he works. It is a respite from real life. From time to time he goes on blind dates where he meets Danny. 20 years old and full of enthusiasm, Danny dreams of becoming a dancer. Shirley, Omer’s little sister, has her own problems. Aside from being Omer’s greatest annoyance, she is in an unconventional relationship with, Michal, owner of the city’s hippest coffeehouse and her boss. Beyond Gay is a powerful look at the political dynamics of Gay Pride celebrations around the world, dramatically juxtaposing socially accepted celebrations in North and South America and the international protest marches in nations where state-sanctioned homophobia is the norm and there is no support from local communities. In the film, Vancouver Pride Society President, Ken Coolen, is on a mission to impart relevance to Vancouver’s pride celebrations. With film crew in tow, he embarks on a journey that will ultimately take him around the world, transcending Vancouver’s elaborate costumes, lavish parties and pounding dance music to uncover the unimaginable selflessness and bravery of activists and volunteers in the global LGBT community. The film reveals the vast spectrum of Pride, from Sao Paulo’s government-sponsored celebration, to Moscow and Warsaw Pride, where Coolen is one of the few brave souls who di Bob Christie (Canada, 2009, 87’) contatti/contacts Bob Christie Transmission #240 - 196 West 3rd Ave. Vancouver BC V5Y 1E9 Tel 604.639.3333 [email protected] www.BigGayMovie.com dare to march among violent radicals and witness their violence and intolerance. The three-and-a-half-decade relationship of the British writer Christopher Isherwood and the American portrait artist Don Bachardy is one of the ultimate true stories of a proto-gay-marriage succeeding in a forbidding climate. The two men navigated Hollywood society as an openly gay couple, withstanding the slings and arrows of homophobes. Chris & Don combines present-day interviews, archival footage shot by the couple from the 1950s, excerpts from Isherwood’s diaries, and playful animations to recount their romance. City of borders follows the daily lives of five Israelis and Palestinians at Jerusalem’s only gay bar as they navigate the minefield of politics, religion and discrimination to live and love openly. Set against the construction of the separation wall between Israel and the Palestinian territories and the struggle for a gay pride parade in Jerusalem, these inter-woven stories reveal the contradictions and complexities of the struggle for acceptance. “Everyone comes from their own ghetto and meets at Shushan,” says the bar owner Sa’ar Netanel, a secular Israeli and Jerusalem’s first openly gay city council member. His outspokenness has made Sa’ar a target of numerous death threats. For devout Muslim Palestinian, Boody, going to Shushan means endangering his life in an illegal nighttime border crossing from the West Bank to Jerusalem. On the dance floor, a Palestinian Israeli nurse, Samira Saraya, kisses her lover of four years, Ravit Geva, a Jewish Israeli doctor. Their union breaks two of Middle Eastern society’s biggest taboos: same-sex relations and intimacy between Jews and Arabs. Outside of the bar, Jewish, Muslim and Christian groups, in a rare show of solidarity, strive to eliminate all demonstrations of gay identity through riots and death threats. Yun Jong Suh Born in Seoul in 1972, she moved to Connecticut at the age of eight. After studying biology and psychology in Berkeley, she had various jobs in radio and at television stations. Following her award-winning reports – one on the massacres that took place in Palestinian refugee camps Sabra and Shatilla, and another on Korean women forced into prostitution during the Second World War – she decided to make Jerusalem’s only gay bar the subject of her directorial debut as a filmmaker. il compleanno Due coppie di amici, Matteo e Francesca, Diego e Shary decidono di trascorrere insieme l’estate in una casa sulla spiaggia ai piedi del monte Circeo. In this drama, Diego and Shary are a wealthy couple who have rented a luxurious summer house by the sea, which they share with their friends Matteo and Francesca. Life is easy until the arrival of David, Diego and Shary’s handsome son in his early twenties. While everyone likes David, his presence brings out a sense of rivalry and unspoken longings among both couples, and when their friend Leonard, a psychiatrist, arrives, his theories about why so much has changed since David showed up does little to ease anyone’s mind. Anora Fleece still does her best to make the most out of life, but her kids can’t stand her, her husband is a tyrant who abuses her, and her family lives in the middle of nowhere. When Imogene Cochran moves in next door, the two women become fast friends. Imogene sells cosmetics for Kathy K. Kosmetics, a company that caters exclusively to the cocoa-skinned woman. Despite the fact that such women aren’t generally welcomed with open arms in Anora’s neck of the woods, it isn’t long before she and Imogene have found a common ground. Before long, their friendship develops into something more serious. But Anora’s husband, Cheb, is exactly the kind of intolerant brute that has cemented their town’s backward reputation, and when he discovers the truth about the two women, all hell breaks loose. In the chaos, Anora grabs a gun and accidentally shoots her husband dead. With nothing to lose and nowhere to run, Anora and Imogene toss Cheb’s corpse in the trunk, load the kids in the car, and head out on a “family” road trip to bury the man who caused them so much grief. Filmmaker John Greyson and singer-composer David Wall’s video opera Fig Trees is a challenging and complex construction. It is at once a hymn to activists, a history lesson, an investigation into Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson’s opera Four Saints in Three Acts, each playing a counterpoint in a post-modern but exact composition with the rigor of Bach. The key focus is on Tim McCaskell a pioneering Aids activist in Canada, and Zackie Achmat who made international headlines with his refusal to take antiretroviral drugs until they were made generally available in South Africa. The operatic singing highlights the parallel struggles of individuals in battling pharmaceutical giants and governments in the face of Aids. This is a retelling of recent history, set against older queer history and a meditation on contemporary sainthood. It is polemical but beautiful, informative and lyrical. Kate Fleming was a Seattle-based actress who enjoyed a successful and award-winning career narrating audio books. Fleming was also a lesbian who shared a home with her long-time life partner Charlene Strong. In late 2006, a severe rainstorm led to a flash flood in Kate’s neighborhood, and she became trapped in her basement as she tried to save some equipment from the small recording studio she maintained in her house. Kate was eventually found by a rescue team and rushed to a hospital, but to no avail, as she never regained consciousness and died soon afterward. To her horror and disgust, Charlene was not permitted to be with Kate during the last moments of her life — the state of Washington does not recognize same-sex marriage and consequently the hospital staff did not acknowledge Charlene as a family member. Charlene also found herself shut out of the funeral process for similar reasons, and the anger and humiliation she felt led her to become a vocal and passionate activist for full marriage equality, speaking out on behalf of matrimonial rights for gay and lesbian couples so that no one would have to feel the pain she experienced. For My Wife is a documentary by David Rothmiller that chronicles Charlene Strong’s transition from the manager of a dental office to a champion for civil rights. Tala sees something special about Leyla, who is a clumsy and simple person. From now on, Tala will set off on a new, difficult path which will make her discover unexpected feelings toward Leyla. But when the two women find themselves falling in love. Tala’s sense of duty and traditionalist culture cause her to push Leyla away and catch the first flight to Jordan, where the preparations for her marriage are going on. As family members descend and the wedding day approaches, simmering family tensions come to boiling point and the pressure mounts for Tala to be true to herself. Meanwhile heartbroken Leyla relishes her newly found sense of identity and self-respect and moves on with her new life – much to the shock of her tradition-loving Indian parents. Single again, Tala flies back to London – but it will take more than just a date set up by Ali and Leyla’s sister Zara to win Leyla back. In his latest film, Julián Hernández portrays love as an epic act of martyrdom in which redemption and fulfilment can only be found in the afterlife. This new work tells the story of two men, Kieri and Ryo, and their unquestioning love for each other. The absoluteness of this love gives meaning to their lives. But their mutual devotion is not to last – Ryo is abducted and, as a result, Kieri must now embark upon a mysterious journey. Unbeknown to him, it is “Corazón del cielo”, or heaven’s heart herself that leads and protects the lovers on their quest and spurs on Kieri’s longing. Escape, searching and waiting are the stages of Ryo’s lonely journey which ends in his death, while Kieri, desperate to find his beloved, agrees to sacrifice his body to bring about Ryo’s resurrection. When they die, “Corazón del cielo” guides the earth to cover them, so that new life can spring from their demise. This movie by Pasquale Marrazzo deals with different stories with a common topic: the violence in the city of Milan. We meet Gianni with his friends, young and gay. All are exploited by precarious jobs and continuously black mailed. Gianni who works as a waiter is continuously sexually abused by his boss. Then we meet Karim, an illegalimmigrant from Tunisia to Italy who is blackmailed by a gang of compatriots who want the money for passport and documents but at the same time they offer him only black market jobs so that Karim is nobody and does not exist for the Italian state and is not protected by its laws. We meet Irene and Luigia, a lesbian couple. They hide themselves. Irene is an alcoholic, many years ago her husband took her child away from her. She was never able to overcome this act of violence. We meet Betty, a transsexual. She is in love with Fabio. Fabio is mildly interested in her but only uses her to get rid of the loan sharks he got in to debt with. Between love and anger, they are all dreaming of Friday, but they live on Thursday and while they tell us their wishes and their regrets, they try to rebel against an existence that they do not like and that has been forced upon them. Dormono insieme e cominciano a frequentarsi. (Berlinale 2009, Panorama.) Koutras H. Panos Nato ad Atene, ha studiato alla London Film School e alla Sorbona di Parigi. Strella è il suo primo lungometraggio. George is released from prison after 14 years of incarceration for a murder he committed in his small Greek village. He spends his first night out in a cheap downtown hotel in Athens. There he meets Strella, a young transsexual prostitute. They spend the night together and soon they fall in love. But the past is catching up with George. With Strella on his side he will have to find a new way out. “Strella is the kind of story told at dinner parties, a kind of urban legend. These stories usually capture an element of mass consciousness, making direct references to archetypical myths, most often Greek. Which is exactly what Strella’s heroes are: Greeks, living in a country both ancient and contemporary, where the need for a new European identity and a new value system is more pressing than ever.” (Production notes) Having been rejected by di Koutras H. Keith Haring nasce il 4 maggio 1958 a Kutztown, in Pennsylvania. Artist and designer Keith Haring created work that bridged the gap between high art and pop culture during his short but influential career. Haring’s simple outline drawings of characters without features were often loaded with meaning even if they seemed outwardly naïve, and while his canvases hung in major art galleries, his work was also embraced by pop musicians such as Grace Jones and Duran Duran, he created murals for public installations, and his illustrations adorned T-shirts and watches. Haring also created images for charitable and political groups, and he was at the peak of his fame when he succumbed to AIDS-related illness in 1990, at the age of 32. The Universe of Keith Haring is a documentary which examines the life and career of this influential figure in contemporary pop art, and features interviews with his friends, family, and colleagues, including Yoko Ono, David LaChapelle, Fab Five Freddy, Hans Meyer, Junior Vasquez, and many more. Christina Clausen Christina Clausen was born in Denmark but lives and works mostly in Rome. Since 1991, she worked for RAI, and in 1998, she debuts as a director with Germans in Italy 1943-45. Vive e lavora a Berlino. rosa von praunheim R osa von Praunheim, gay filmmaker, was born in 1942 as Holger Mischwitzky in Riga, Latvia. He studied at the art school in Offenbach and at the Academy for Visual Arts in Berlin in the early 60s, but left before graduation. His first short, Von Rosa von Praunheim, appeared in 1967 and was followed three years later by Die Bettwurst and It’s Not the Homosexual Who is Perverse, but the Situation in Which He Lives (Nicht der Homosexuelle ist pervers, sondern die Situation, in der er lebt, 1970). The latter film was a succès de scandale and heralded the establishment of the gay liberation movement in Germany. On December 10, 1991, Praunheim created a scandal in Germany when he outed, among others, the anchorman Alfred Biolek, the comedian Hape Kerkeling and wrongly the actor Götz George in the TV show Explosiv - Der heiße Stuhl as gay. Per noi era importante scoprire la vita dei gay senza risparmi....“ Young Daniel, grown up in the province, arrives in Berlin where he meets Clemens. They live an intense love story, and go to live together. After four months Daniel leaves, moving into the mansion of an older and richer man. Daniel begins working in a gay bar, wears the latest fashion and adapts quickly to the ideals of the queer subculture: he spends his free time at the beach and at night frequents the gay scene where he gets used to occasional sexual adventures. Shortly after, he discovers the thrill of sex in parks and public toilets. By accident he meets Paul who invites him to join his gay community. In the community, the group discusses the problems of gay life and points out its superficiality. Their task as emancipated gays is to affirm their condition and find contents other than fashion and sex, through the political commitment deriving from a shared reflection with other gay men on the forms of common life. The premiere took place on January 31st, 1971 within the “Forum of Young film” at the Berlin Film Festival. In the same year the first German gay organizations were founded in Berlin and Frankfurt. One year later the film was released for the first time on television from Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), the regional public broadcaster in North Rhine-Westphalia in the late evening. Less than a year later it was released on the first national network (ARD) after having been initially cancelled. In Bavaria, the regional broadcaster (Bayerischer Rundfunk) decided to temporarily darken the first channel to prevent the screening of the film. Rosa von Prauenheim presented his film: “The film is characterized by the anger and frustration I accumulated in my gay life in Berlin. I was convinced that we could not always just wait passively wait for the kindness of society to change something in our favour... Our film should provoke, pull out gays and straights from their peace and make them talk. Certainly we did not want a film glorifying or pitying gays. For us it was important to show the lives of gays without omissions....” First German (and European) feature film on AIDS successfully presented at festivals in Berlin and Rotterdam in 1986, Ein Virus kennt keine Moral is a black comedy on the virus of the 20th century. A brilliant and provocative film set between saunas (Rosa von Praunheim himself plays the greedy manager of a sauna concerned about the effect of the infection on his business) and hilarious characters, showing the subtle dangers the new discrimination that in a few years would have hit the gay community. The manager of the sauna and his partner, both victims of the infection, are in the company of unscrupulous journalist who leads her homophobic campaign with articles that sow panic among the readers, a mad scientist who does experiments on gorillas, and who is infected after being raped by one of them, a bisexual nurse who voluntarily plagues his patients, and then the federal government that wants to confine all HIV positives and AIDS patients on an remote island. In time of great danger, minorities survive thanks to a good dose of humour. Grotesque, macabre, but fun and bright, the film offers several ways to deal with the virus: on one side prejudice, exploitation and speculation, on the other solidarity, alternative therapies and ways of coping with the disease. “We all have a town or landscape whose image is within us. I have a passion for New York. The extremes, the contradictions, the cruelty, the ease of the town are also in me.” Three German women, Claudia, Anna and Ulli arrive in New York in the early ‘80s to take their chances in this city, which hypnotizes and enchants the three protagonists in the fight to get a green card. Claudia, who came along with her boyfriend in New York immediately separates from him and falls in love with a woman. However, she is raped by a friend next door to his apartment in the East Village, but manages to drag himself with hers last strength to the supermarket around the corner to ask for help. Ulli originally from a small town in Bavaria, naive and apparently vulnerable, lives with her boyfriend, Ronnie, but he has just killed his best friend for a history of drugs gone wrong. Only Anna, the third principal interpreter of the film, did not experience anything dramatic. He married a fashion designer known in a strip-tease bar, where she performed part-time at night while working by day as a therapist in a Catholic school. Überleben in New York is one of the most successful films of von Praunheim, for his sensitive and accurate narrative and superb photography. This docu-drama is the extraordinary story of survival of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a gentle, indestructible transgender from Eastern Germany, a true heroine of sexual minorities. Born as Lothar Berfelde, Charlotte was the son of an oppressive and violent Nazi father. To save her mother and herself from the constant violence of the father, after having been discovered in women’s clothes, she killed him while sleeping with a rolling pin. After several years of reform school, Lothar was released to find himself at the end of the war in a Germany now occupied by the Russians. Lothar becomes Lottschen, and begins to work for an old junk dealer. Collecting objects found in the destroyed houses, she opens a museum in the abandoned home of the von Mahlsdorf, the Gründerzeit Museum, of which she becomes guide, guardian and curator. Groups of gays, lesbians and transgender people begin to gather around her, choosing the home of Charlotte as a meeting place, attracting the suspicions of Eastern German secret police, who in 1974 will try to confiscate, without success, the museum. In 1991 during a garden party, the LGBT community is attacked by a group of skinheads that severely hurt many of those present. In 1992 Charlotte von Mahlsdorf is awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz, the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, maximum and only recognition of merit in the country. Two actors play von Mahlsdorf in early youth and maturity, while she plays herself the last years of her life. Rosa Von Praunheim’s Transexual Menace gives viewers remarkable insight into the home and work lives of transgendered people from many cultures and countries, and provides one of the first in-depth views of female-to-male transexuals and transexuals with families and children. This still today unique feature-length video takes its title from the American political action group where transgendered people are defining themselves, demanding their legal rights, fighting for medical care and against job discrimination. can i be your bratwurst, please? posso essere la tua salsiccia? In his documentary Rosa von Praunheim creates the vision of a subculture ruled by women that is also a reassessment of the history of homosexuality and its oppression. As a result of the Holocaust and later, Aids, the male homosexual community has sustained bitter losses and, according to Praunheim, lesbian women have now placed themselves at the head of the so-called queer movement. The female protagonists in the film represent two different generations; they also incorporate the past and present status of homosexuals in society. Berlin-based Turkish DJ Ipec moves assuredly through the club scene; journalist Manuela Kay publishes a lesbian magazine, “LMag”, and Laura and Silke Radosh have founded a family and belong to a lesbian motherandtoddler group. The male protagonists on the other hand all belong to a generation that experienced the Third Reich and Germany at its most repressive point in history. Walter Schwarze and Albrecht Becker were both imprisoned during the Nazi era. One of the men suffered from depression and was almost broken by the experience; the other, a self-confessed masochist, enjoyed his life in prison. Entertainer Joe Luga remembers the post-war era. As a cabaret singer he once performed in women’s clothes before German troops on the Russian front – but it wasn’t until Adenauer’s government came to power that he found himself behind bars. *“Frocio” (fag) is the literal translation of Schwul. Schwul in Germany is not an offence (anymore). The Theater of Rifredi in cooperation and in conjunction with the “Florence Queer Festival” - the Florentine LGBT film festival now at its 7th edition- has felt the need to share with its audience, an audience which is mixed, diverse, caring and popular, some thoughts to counteract the alarming resurgence of sporadic incidents, but no less disturbing, of homophobia that seem to contradict the growth of civic consciousness of our country which our theatre has always paid a special attention to Specifically, we wanted to address this issue with the three very different proposals all of very spectacular impact, and - we hope - appeal to the public, ranging from popular theatre in the vernacular of the now beloved com- pany “Il Carrozzone” from Leghorn, to the irresistible performance of a prestigious actress as Pamela Villoresi (in a transgender role) in a beautiful text of the South American author Mario Vargas Llosa, to a captivating mix of film and theatre with the beloved Turkish actress Serra Yilmaz, in a co-production Pupi e Fresedde - Teatro di Rifredi Teatro Stabile di Innovazione and Florence Queer Festival, specifically prepared for this occasion. Different proposals but with unifying message: that not to feel sorry for themselves, to play down the differences by putting on the same level of normality, to smile and speak to the heart and the intelligence of many people as possible avoiding segregation. Successfully presented at the last Spoleto Festival, now arrives on the Rifredi stage, and exclusively for Florence, “Appointment in London” a premiere for the theatre, written by the great Latin American author Mario Vargas Llosa. The story is an acute and profound reflection on the theme of identity and people’s secret life. Two friends from childhood and youth, both Peruvians, meet in London after many years without any contacts. In their meeting they relive the past, stirring memories with ugly stories now believed buried or which perhaps they did not even know. The show is therefore also a survey on the values of friendship and feelings on that thin thread that binds us as human beings, as a deep attraction for humans other than ourselves. A theatrical play that also makes use of complex languages, and images projected and perceived as ghosts.
