Climate experts are divided in their scientific opinion on the issue of climate
change. The recognized opinion is that Earth’s climate system is unequivocally
warming, and that it is certain that humans are causing it. Other climate scientists
stand firm on their position that climate change and rising sea water levels is a
recurring natural phenomenon that has become heavily politizised and misused by
organizations, governments and politicians with different motives.

There is no absolute agreement in the public perception of this controversy either.
However, according to one of the scientific positions, the Maldives is estimated to
disappear under the ocean in the year 2080. If this is the case with this compact
micro nation, we are currently witnessing the direct consequences of the global
ecological tragedy in progress, perhaps making the Maldives the first movable
prototype nation ready to pack up and relocate.
In order for the Maldives to appear again as a nation at another designated
location / land, the Maldivians are in the process of collecting, archiving and
preserving every detail of their existence.
Our notion of the portable pavilion is based on a romantic review. It reflects how
artists and thinkers from around the world share with the Maldivians the concern
of preservation by presenting solutions to our ecological situation. Hence the
pavilion presents a collection of thoughts on preserving and archiving the
Maldivian memory and history, and a visual representation of the sinking paradise.
Artists and contributors from around the world will be invited to contribute works
related to contemporary environmental romanticism. Collectively they will form a
portable micro exhibition positioned inside a transparent colorless space, easy and
ready to be moved to another location as a symbol of the Maldivian case.

Chamber of Public Secrets
Chamber of Public Secrets (CPS) is a production collective of critical art and culture:
an informative, non-profit, independent contributor to the global art scene.
The collective works as a network of artists, curators and thinkers who have been
collaborating since 2004 in the organization, production and circulation of
exhibitions, video and film festivals, art events, experimental TV and radio
programs, political fictions and documentaries. CPS members also set up debate
forums and talks and publish books and articles on issues like migration, mobility,
representation, colonialism, gender and difference to help debate the role of art,
its responsibility and its relation to society.
CPS co-curated the Biennale Manifesta 8 in Spain 2010-11, curated events and
cooperated with at institutions like Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía,
Madrid; Guangzhou Triennial, Guangdong Museum of Modern Art, China, and
UCCA Beijing; Danish Film Institute; Nikolaj, Copenhagen Art Center; Museum for
Contemporary Art, Denmark; and the Nordic House Reykjavík, Iceland; Cinema
Paris; KIASMA Museum in Helsinki, Queens Museum, NY; Hamburg Film Festival;

Stefano Cagol è artista partecipante al Padiglione delle Maldive, 55a
Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – la Biennale di Venezia con il progetto THE
ICE MONOLITH.
Il progetto si sviluppa attraverso una video installazione dal luogo Pavilion,
un rendimento 24 ore durante i giorni di apertura su Riva Cà di Dio dal 29
maggio (poi documentata anche dal padiglione), e una piattaforma
accadendo in diversi modi, luoghi, momenti, e con ospiti diversi lungo la tutta
la durata della Biennale.

Che cosa ci chiede? Un monolite di ghiaccio delle Alpi appare a Venezia
in Riva Cà di Dio e si scioglie sotto il sole estivo. Metafora kubrickiana, interroga sul
serio processo che sta colpendo il pianeta.
Stefano Cagol stesso, basato in un villaggio nelle Alpi e reduce da progetti nella
regione artica, è testimone della sparizione in corso dei cosiddetti "ghiacci
eterni”.
Il ghiaccio si scioglie diventando acqua. L'acqua del monolite disciolto nella
laguna si unisce quindi ai miliardi e miliardi di litri d'acqua che nei prossimi decenni
rischiano di travolgere le zone più sensibili del globo. Le Maldive sono una delle
prime, ma anche Venezia.
Alpi e Maldive, ghiaccio e sole, così lontani ma così vicini, collegati dalla
stessa sorte.
THE ICE MONOLITH è un’azione di poche ore durante l'apertura. Un atto
di impatto estetico ed emozionale rivolto a un vasto pubblico, per attirare
l'attenzione e stimolare la riflessione. Una metafora, una scomparsa.
Quindi questa azione continuerà ad essere rivelata al pubblico anche attraverso
una documentazione video visibile presso il Padiglione estendendo il processo di
scioglimento per i sei mesi della Biennale.
Inoltre press oil Padiglione, nella video installazione THE ICE
MONOLITH. Fade alte montagne emergono dall'acqua - o scompaiono in essa.
Dilemmi, risposte, risorse, tentativi, strategie, utopie sono affrontate anche
in una piattaforma di discussione che completa il progetto coinvolgendo una
vasta cerchia di protagonisti – visto che il nome sanscrito delle Maldive Maladvipa significa letteralmente ghirlanda di isole. Curatori, scrittori, ricercatori
provenienti da tutti i continenti e dalle Maldive sono invitati a interagire con
l'artista per provare a rispondere a THE ICE MONOLITH. In vari modi dai dialoghi ai
concerti, in momenti diversi lungo tutti i sei mesi della Biennale, e in più luoghi - al
Padiglione delle Maldive a Venezia, presso lo studio di Stefano Cagol a VIR Viafariniin-residence a Milano, sul web, sulla cima dei ghiacciai alpini.

- BIOGRAFIA DI STEFANO CAGOL
Stefano Cagol è nato a Trento. Ha studiato a Berna, presso l'Accademia di
Belle Arti di Brera a Milano, alla Ryerson University di Toronto con un progetto
post-dottorato attraverso una borsa di studio del governo canadese.
È artista partecipante al Padiglione delle Maldive della 55. Biennale di
Venezia. Ha preso parte alla Barents Art Triennale 2013, ha realizzato una mostra
personale nella chiesa di San Gallo come evento collaterale della 54. Biennale di
Venezia, un evento parallelo a Manifesta 7, un off project allla 4. Biennale di Berlino,
e un evento satellite personale alla 1. Biennale di Singapore.
Ha tenuto mostre personali e progetti personali allo ZKM di Karlsruhe,
presso il Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art di Danzica, a Museion di Bolzano, al
Westergasfabriek Cultuur Park di Amsterdam, al Kunstraum Innsbruck, da NADiff a
Tokyo, da Platform a Londra, e al Mart – Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea
di Trento e Rovereto.
Ha realizzato l’installazione permanente d'arte pubblica Novus Atlas presso
l’Istituto Martino Martini di Mezzolombardo, l’installazione permanente d'arte
pubblica Tridentum per la porta A22 di Trento, e l’installazione d’arte pubblica FLU
POWER FLU durata 5 anni sulla facciata della Beursschouwburg a Bruxelles.
Sarà a VIR Viafarini-in-residence a Milano da luglio a fine settembre 2013. È
stato artist in residence presso BAR international di Pikene på Broen a Kirkenes,
Norvegia, presso l’International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) di New York,
presso il Leube Group Art Program a Gartenau, alla Künstlerhaus di Salisburgo, e
borsista presso l’ICP – International Center of Photography di New York.
È vincitore del Premio Terna 02 per l'arte contemporanea, il premio Targetti
Art Light, il premio Murri Public Art. È stato shortlisted per l’Art & Ecology
International Artists Residency di RSA – Royal Society for Arts, Londra, e per il
MapXXL mobility program di Pépinières Européennes pour Jeunes Artistes di
Parigi.
Tra le mostre collettive, ha partecipato a Alpenrepublik alla Kunstraum
Innsbruck, Loss of Control. Abschiedsausstellung: Jan Hoet al MARTa Herford, Eurasia
al Mart – Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, Zoo
Logical Garden all’Harry Malter Park di Ghent, Nuovo Spazio Italiano presso la
Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea di Trento, Generazione Media a Palazzo della
Triennale di Milano.
