They opened their home to about ten paesani for the purpose of making sausage, salami, and prosciutto in the Abruzzese tradition. Back in those days they started out with one hundred pounds of pork meat, and eventually worked their way up to almost six hundred pounds. About ten years ago the operation moved to the home of Chris and Rosanne Pelino, where it takes place every year the weekend of the Martin Luther King holiday. They started out in the Pelino basement, but have since moved out to the heated garage. This year they bought 2,800 pounds of meat, which was made into 950 salami, 700 pounds of sausage (both meat and liver), and 1,150 pounds of prosciutto. This year Giulio and Connie Badia’s grandchildren Dominic and Anthony came to experience the tradition their grandfather started. This is what it’s all about for these proud Abruzzese, not to mention getting to enjoy the wonderful delicacies they produce. PAGE 13 Italian American Cultural Society Meet Mike Calcaterra By Sandra Tornberg Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc. is a long-time supporter of the Italian American Cultural Society. Their full-page ad that occupies the inside back page of The Italian American helps to underwrite the publication of our monthly newspaper. In addition this family-owned business is a sponsor of our Festa Italiana, Sportsmen Dinner, and many other events and can always be counted on to purchase raffle tickets that support our fundraising activities. They even pay for the subscriptions to the magazines found in our lobby. they moved again to Moross and Kelly Roads in Detroit and continued to serve the community from this modern facility. As the east side Italian American population moved north to Macomb County, Larry and his longtime friend Ed Wujek established the Wujek-Calcaterra Funeral Home at Schoenherr and Metropolitan Parkway to accommodate their needs. When I recently had the pleasure of meeting Larry Calcaterra and his son Mike, I asked Larry why supporting the IACS is so important to them. He quickly replied, “Because it is the hub of the Italian community.” Indeed the Calcaterra family has a long tradition of serving our community. In 1913, Frank J. Calcaterra opened his first funeral home at Rivard and Wilkins in Detroit. He came to know virtually everyone in the Italian community, from common laborers to judges, and was dedicated to helping people. His brothers Louis FEBRUARY 2014 and Paul joined him, and the funeral home moved to a larger facility on East Grand Boulevard in 1937. Louis’ sons Louis, Jr, Frank, Paul, and Larry joined the family business. In 1958 Larry, recognizing that times and trends change, sought to bring fresh, new concepts to the funeral business. His sons Larry P. Matthew, and Mike are helping to fulfill his vision for the future. They opened another location, Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc. at 25 Mile Road and Van The Italian American Cultural Society Banquet & Conference Center Details It’s all in the Special Make your event 43843 Romeo Plank Rd Clinton Township, MI 48038 586 228-3030 www.iacsonline.com email: [email protected] Dyke in Shelby Township in 1998, and continue to provide exceptional quality at a fair value to the community. Now Larry is “retired” and his three sons are the fourth generation of Calcaterras tending to the needs of local families. These three young men represent the latest generation of a respected family name, which remains today an institution in Italian tradition throughout the tricounty area. Their reward comes when, at a family’s most critical moment, the loss of a loved one, the first words uttered are “call Calcaterra”, spoken with complete confidence. What a source of inner pride it must have been for the entire Calcaterra family to have developed sincere relationships which go back three or four generations. Mike told me that theirs is a unique profession that has allowed them to serve generations of families who have sought their assistance. “Celebrating life is something my family takes to heart”, said Mike. “We hope to continue to earn the trust of this community by treating families fairly and being kind when they need us most.” I asked Mike if there would be a fifth generation of Calcaterras carrying on the family tradition. He advised that all three Calcaterra brothers have teen-aged children. Mike proudly reported that his daughter told him that she thinks his job is “cool”. So there is cause for optimism! The IACS is grateful to Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc. for their long-standing friendship and support.
