Quando la storia
va in loop
Marthe
Cinema is a question of time. Time observed and time
experienced. Time filmed that pours like the sand in
an hourglass into the time of the story. Even when it
suggests otherwise, a film has the task of constructing
a time, of presenting it to the viewer; sometimes, and
these are the best cases, this time is something more
than the time needed to make a joke or move a body.
Pastorale cilentana speaks precisely of this: the time
of a place. Mario Martone has a close relationship
with Cilento, with the history and culture of this slice
of southern Italy stretched out along the sea. In the
almost 20 minutes of this film he condenses much of
his relationship with what is apparently a place of the
soul.
Time is the root shared by this day’s films: the time of
a return, as non-linear as a karst river, is what runs
through Suite Armoricaine, while opposing times
– though the overall durations are the same – are
proposed by Hong Sang-soo’s dual narrative. And
the time of a present that runs faster than our eyes is
proposed in Kiev/Moscow. Part 1, a journey into the
Kiev/Moscow. Part 1
madness of a revolution about which we still know too
little.
madre.
Riemelt) inizia gradatamente a incrinare.

Time understood as memory is also the great theme
of Amnesia, a film it’s worth saying a few words
about, particularly in light of its treatment at Cannes.
We should say right away that Barbet Schroeder’s is
a good and important film. And time will be on his
side. Not only in terms of the type of project and the
storytelling – pairing two visions of the past and two
life stories – but also in terms of the mise en scène,
which confirms the talent of one of the great directors
of modern times, with no offense intended towards
those who get stuck on overly bright colours or lines
not performed with pure naturalism.

Mostly Marth
“
In Amnesia Martha è
testarda, una sorta di pitbull.
Trattiene la rabbia con così
tanta forza che diventa una
motivazione per vivere
“
Mrs Keller, in Amnesia you play a character
with two completely different sides: Martha
is a very quiet, and settled woman on the
surface, but in her inner life she’s struggling
with her rage. How did you work on this
double level?
She’s so stubborn, she’s like a pitbull, she
doesn’t let it go. If she would live in the city
she probably would speak again German.
Living alone in the island helps her keeping this
madness with her. She holds on her rage so
strongly, she refuses her heritage and little by
little this becomes an obsession, a motivation
for life.
Which kind of director is Barbet Schroeder?
Barbet is so quiet and open. He prepares enormously, he’s the opposite to me, he’s scrupulous.
The movie is based on her mother’s story. He
keeps everything under control, I’m more:
“Let’s see what happens.” I didn’t do too many
researches because I knew this story: my father
was German and he left Germany before Hitler
came to power, it was something very similar.
He was not jewish, he left because he knew
he was not good for my country. He told me to
be always ready to leave. To have always my
passport with me. It’s more important that
PardoLive  12 | 8 | 2015
money, the passport. And I leave all the time,
whenever there’s a problem, because I don’t like
to discuss, I’m gone. Men, work, life, everything.
I can’t talk, I hate conflicts. My character doesn’t want to suffer, she’s a little bit selfish, and
I understand this side of her. I’m very friend
with myself, I feel alone only when I’m around
people I don’t appreciate. I understand her will
to live alone. I like this character even if I don’t
agree with her being so stubborn.
Do you agree with her will to forget the past?
No, I think I couldn’t do that myself. Germany changed, the young kids are not really
responsible, and they don’t want to forget. I’m
very much for that: I don’t know if we should
forgive, but definitely not forget. I could never
choose not to speak German. I love too much
German language on stage. I love German music so much, Brahms. Going home at a certain
age is beautiful. When you’re young you want
to leave, but then you want to come back, to go
home.
Last question is about you great career. Who
are the best directors and actors you worked
with?
I was very lucky working with the greatest. Billy
Wilder, Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, John
Gielgud, George C. Scott. In America
they offered me other roles but they
were all about terrorism and genre, it
wasn’t interesting anymore. Movie
changed, now they are for kids, not
for me. A few days Al Pacino said
to me that The Marathon Man
we did together, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico or Scarface
today would be independent
movies. I think this is very
sad. I have no frustration
that I moved back.

Piazza Grande, Pastorale cilentana, 12 | 8 | 2015 – 21.30
gemma tutta visiva e sonora (fotografata
caccia, pesca, agricoltura e pastorizia.
Eppure Pastorale cilentana non è solo
questo. Intanto, qualcosa andrebbe detto sul
Cilento.
come Il giovane favoloso o Noi credevamo,

vivere.

Focus on Mario Martone
Land, Food
and Life
Mario Martone, you’re presenting Pastorale cilentana,
a short made for Expo 2015, in Piazza Grande. How was
the project proposed to you?
I was asked to create a project for Pavilion Zero at Expo, the
one at the entrance. They weren’t planning to have a proper
room for showing films, so it had to be something halfway
between an installation and a film. Along with screenwriter Ippolita di Majo, we came up with a kind of trajectory,
extremely simple, but which allowed me to work on the
theme of time. Together with the director of photography,
Renato Berta, we prioritized very wide-angled shots, which
is why I’m particularly happy it’s going to be projected on
the Piazza Grande screen.
The film interprets the Expo theme, feeding the planet.
The pavilion’s curator, Davide Rampello, suggested that I develop the theme in a personal way. At first I wasn’t sure if I
should accept, but then Ippolita suggested that I try to show
the day of a young goatherd in Cilento, a place that I love. At
the heart is an extremely simple relationship between land,
food and life. Cilento is also emblematic of the theme: it’s the
region where the Mediterranean diet was studied, it’s a place
that, after a period of exploitation, is finding a way to be
reborn in a return to the land.
The main character is a young boy: this perspective that
shapes the film is quite rare in your work.
There’s only a girl in L’amore molesto, little Delia. Pastorale cilentana is a boy’s initiatory journey. It’s been a great
experience to make films with two kids. Mattia, the main
character, is actually a young herder, used to dealing with
goats, as can be clearly seen in the film. He knows how to
take them to pasture, milk them, lead them. The set was like
a game for him, but at the same time when we ran late he
would be worried about his herd.
This year you’re riding high on the success of Il giovane
favoloso (Leopardi), a hugely popular film, whose echoes have reached Locarno with the voice of Elio Germano,
whose voice also features in Bella e perduta (Lost and
Beautiful). Does this success show a new desire for
discovery in the cinema-going public?
© Fabrizio Maltese
I had already noticed it with Noi credevamo (We Believed):
there are still curious people who go to the cinema when
they find films that follow a line, which I like to call “radical,
popular”. Certainly the appeal of Leopardi had a positive
effect, but I also think that Italian cinema has changed
profoundly. Ten years ago it was more uniform, but now extremely diverse films are being made and it is precisely this
liberty and openness that is finally being received positively
by the general public.

cadono a pennello.
fare accorciare, allargare... Poi, però, c’è quella volta in
cui è perfetta così com’è. Certi ruoli sono così.

There are people who think that a
beautiful movie has to be boring. To me,
cinema is fun. And a good role is like a

it is perfectly tailored on you

Jigeumeun matgo geuttaeneun teullida
(Right Now, Wrong Then) è pensato come
un racconto in due parti, simmetriche e
speculari.
L’incontro
offerta.
Il tratto distintivo di Jigeumeun matgo
geuttaeneun teullida (Right Now, Wrong
messa in scena appare funzionale a porre

è crudele ma il mondo resiste, perché nulla è perduto – the past is never dead
”
pascale breton
Let us make ours a metaphor cherished
by Pascale Breton. Quoting Heraclitus, her
characters compare time with a child shooting marbles. Playful, unpredictable and…
multidirectional. Surrendering to time’s
elasticity could somehow make more tolerable the long interval since her debut
feature Illumination enchanted attentive
cinephiles, in 2004. A rather unique film,
which demands to be rediscovered, it finally
has a successor, born with a wisdom and
sensitivity out of the ordinary.
An ambitious psychological and sentimental chronicle, Suite Armoricaine fol-
lows the steps of Françoise (Valérie Dréville),
an expert in art history who returns to her
native town in Brittany to teach at the university where she had been a student. Although she barely remembers her former
schoolmates, she finds out that most of
them never left and have been expecting the
homecoming of “the Parisian” with curiosity.
She doesn’t notice at first that one student,
Ion (Kaou Langoët), has that eye for beauty
she seeks to nurture. A gift perhaps inherited from his mother, Moon (Elina Löwensohn), a passionate girl turned homeless because the shores of Hell were too seductive.
It is of Moon that Françoise used to be the
most fond, though, and echoes of a distant,
magical time begin to resurface.
Pascale Breton attends to her fascinating characters with equal tenderness, their
respective points of view prompting a few
jumps in time and variations of angles.
Because, if a single mind isn’t able to fully
grasp the importance of a moment, its friction with others might well be the key to
galvanizing comprehension and a failing
memory. To Coda, a tempo.

La società
gratta e vinci
Slot machine, gratta e vinci, scommesse e varie lotterie:
profondità, chiamando in causa, tessuto dopo tessuto,
continui fino all’immancabile perdita.

Focus on Panorama Suisse
finzione.
d’una giovane disabile; Vecchi pazzi ci presenta
un’anziana diva che si ritrova in una casa anziani;

Bill Drummond in Imagine Waking Up Tomorrow and All Music Has Disappeared, dalle domatrici di belve di Wild Women – Gentle Beasts alla
interamente in Svizzera, rafforzando l’industria
locale e approfittando della sua competenza”.

Signs of Life, Machine Gun or Typewriter?, PalaVideo, 13 | 8 | 2015 – 21.00
Love & Politics
One-man band Travis Wilkerson’s latest
punk agit-prop takes the form of a pirate
radio broadcast, beamed from an undisclosed location in Los Angeles, named for
Russian futurist Vladimir Mayakovsky’s last
poem, Past One O’Clock… The show is a
moody monologue directed to the performer’s lost love, a noirish tinged docufiction
that traverses the boundaries of the City
of Angels. After questioning if it’s better to
change the world with ideas or violence –
23
Machine Gun or Typewriter? – the narrator
(Wilkerson) maps their relationship, Vertigo-style, onto racially frought historical
landmarks (and film locations) such as City
Hall, Union Station and the Old Rampart.
(The most fascinating aside comes in a visit
to East LA’s abandoned Mt. Zion cemetery,
the burial location of writer Lamed Shapiro.
“I don’t know why I brought you there,” the
narrator opines, but we do.) Alternating stable shots of Los Angeles with archival ma-
terial, Wilkerson’s visual montage refers to
significant moments of radical 20th century
history, including scenes from Vietnam and
RAF-era Germany. Indeed, the love story
and politics overlap, as the monologue becomes an account of the mysterious, unnamed woman’s radicalization – she eventually joins the Occupy Movement – and
our narrator’s resistance. But is resistance
futile?

Beyond the Festival
Impegno senza confini
elettricità a 80 mila persone. Perché l’impegno a favore dell’ambiente è come il cinema:
travalica ogni confine.

Beyond the Festival
Cultural Gems
The historic Piazza Grande in Locarno, with
the typical arcades, is one of the most famous squares in Switzerland and functions
as the heart of the town, where the main
commercial and cultural activities take
place: the weekly market on Thursdays, the
Moon & Stars concerts and of course the
open air film projections during Festival del
film. Just around the corner, the old town
is characterised by historic buildings, magnificent courtyards and narrow alleys. There
are also various witnesses of the past, as for
example the Sacred Mount Madonna del
Sasso, which has recently been renovated,
and the Sacred Mount Brissago, both enlisted to be recognised as a humanity heritage
by UNESCO. Also to be mentioned the Visconti Castle with the “Rivellino”, a bulwark,
attested as a Leonardo da Vinci work and the
picturesque old town. As far as arts is concerned, worthy of note are the new Ghisla
Art Collection Foundation in Locarno, where
a collection of artistic value is to be found, as
well as the renewed Museo Castello San Materno, attesting the artistic heritage of Ascona. Last but not least, the Monte Verità, con-
sidered a meeting place at the beginning of
the XX century for intellectuals and artists
supporting a return to nature, was recently
renovated and is considered an example of
Bauhaus design style. Another architectural
highlight not to be missed is the Church of
Giovanni Battista in the heart of Mogno (Vallemaggia), designed by the famous SwissItalian architect Mario Botta.

Beyond the Festival
Ticino Moda
in Blue Jeans
What do James Dean in Rebel without a
Cause (1955) and Tom Cruise in Risky Business (1983) have in common? That’s not an
easy one. Answer? They are both wearing
Lee Jeans, represeting a symbol of youth rebellion. It is matter of details, we agree, but
they are the only thing that counts in the
world of movies, aren’t they?
We could say the same thing about fashion world, and it is interesting to notice that
Lee Jeans, Wrangler and many other brands,
25
such as Timberland, Vans, Eastpak and Napapijri are all controlled by VF Corporation,
a company which has recently decided to
move part of its activities to Stabio, in the
Canton of Ticino.
The American clothing corporation has
in fact built a new building in the Ticinese
town for installing its headquarters, which
today hosts several hundreds of professionals coming from all over the world. The VF
Corporation case represents a reason for
pride to the eyes of Ticino Moda, the association which gathers the more important fashion societies in our Canton helping
them to develop their businesses. And it is
often mentioned to describe a perfect example of multiculturalism and dynamism
of our economy, which is transforming our
territory in a real “Fashion Valley”.

Focus on Giuria ecumenica
Al centro:
i valori umani

Beyond the Festival
TEOS,
the Switzerland’s Untouchables
We’ve been told that this is one of the hottest
summers in Locarno and in whole Ticino, so
we need a fairly good imagination to project
ourselves into winter. But as you know, we
cannot deny that Switzerland is still seen
as the country with snowy mountains great
for winter sport. It is therefore not surprising
that the Top Events of Switzerland (TEOS,
in which the Festival del film Locarno is a
proud member) includes two classic winter
competitions scheduled for next year.
The Ski World Cup Wengen will be held
in January from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th.
It is one of the oldest ski races in the world,
beginning in 1930. If you prefer slower action but with the same amount of adrenaPardoLive  12 | 8 | 2015
line, you should consider joining the White
Turf in St. Moritz by being one of the 30,000
spectators who come yearly to this beatiful
town in the Canton Grisons. Three dates are
available to attend: Feburary 7th, 14th and
21st, 2016.
If you prefer music, the Lucerne Festival
is scheduled from August 14th to September
13th, 2015. A Falstaff quote from Giuseppe
Verdi’s opera, “All the world’s a joke,” represents a sort of leading theme since this
year’s edition is dedicated to “Humor”. “Stay
witty, stay foolish” to paraphrase Steve Jobs.
And by the way, Lucerne is only 65 kilometres away from Zurich where you can take
part in another Top Event – the Weltklasse at
the Letzigrund Stadium. The international
track and field meeting is part of the IAAF
Diamond League and offers a night of fascinating athletics on September 3rd.
Moreover, we cannot forget a special
event dedicated to the arts like Art Basel,
scheduled from June 16th to 19th, in Switzerland but also in Miami (December 3-6, 2015)
and Hong Kong (March 24-26, 2016). Always
next year, in July 2016, you could also attend
the Omega European Masters Crans-Montana (Canton of Valais) or – last but not least
– the Montreux Jazz Festival.

About Sam
© Michela Di Savino
Classified in thematic areas which reunite his movies according to four different periods from first
feature to death in 1983 – the Sam Peckinpah retrospective issue published from Capricci resumes the
author’s career focusing on his most famous masterpieces as long as the less known movies, still capable of explaining the greatness of this iconoclastic director. Redacted by important film critics like
Emmanuel Burdeau and Chris Fujiwara, this essays
collection also contains some interviews and allows
a refreshing look at Sam Peckinpah’s work, proving
that his cinema is always totally present, incapable
of aging because it keeps talking about America’s
endemic contradictions.

Beyond the Festival
Following Alex Dorici’s Tape
© Cesare De Vita
29
A good thing about an event like the Festival del film Locarno is that one can
discover both emerging and established artists at every level, from the international to the local scene. This is also the case for all other initiatives being
promoted during the Festival’s eleven days. This is particularly demonstrated by
the Bally Cultural Foundation which is celebrating their 2014 Artist, Alex Dorici.
Born in Lugano in 1979, Alex is a conceptual artist who looks for local spaces
in order to create installations made out of unconventional materials, such as
paper boxes, ropes, tapes and pipes. He studied in Italy, Switzerland, and France,
but Ticino is his home and represents his preimere territorial choice. In June 2015
for example, he won a contest to create the wall decoration in the atrium of the
New Pregassona Elementary School near Lugano. Check out more information
at: www.alexdorici.ch.
In the last days Alex has showed his ability in via alla Ramogna, a street
known for being covered by Bally Foundation totems during the Festival period.
“I was permitted to work in this urban space – the Ticinese artist says – and
to leave my mark in Locarno; I have used tapes, for a technique called “scotch
drawing” that I am normally using on glass and shop windows”.
This artistic intervention took several days. “I wanted to start an interactive
dialogue with the public soil, spending some days in via alla Ramogna to really
live that street, starting to feel it and getting ready to interact with it, by day or
by night – it didn’t matter. The result was a sort of “work in progress” I hope the
Festival audience enjoyed”.
We were talking about new artists, right? If you are a Ticinese artist between
the ages of 21 and 55, do not hestitate – the Bally Cultural Foundation is looking
for you as its 2015 Artist. Deadline is December 2015. You can apply at www.
