BostonUniversityStudyAbroadPadua FALLSEMESTER 2016 COURSE:CASLI355ITALIANMIGRANTLITERATURE ISTRUCTOR:LauraLenci([email protected]) CLASSSCHEDULE:MondaysandWednesdays,3.00pm-4.50pm OFFICEHOURS:Mondays11.00am-12.00amandWednesdays1.30pm-2.30pm COURSEVALUE:4credits CourseOverview It is difficult to define Italian Contemporary Literature today. In fact, the recent history of Italy demonstrates a progressive change in the identity of the Italian population, due to the strong flux of migration into the country: this changes involve on many levels not only the perspective on the history, culture and language, but also the perception of reality. Like art, literature shows how a peaceful developmentofculturesispossibleandsynthesizespositiveandcriticalaspectsthroughanestheticuseof language.Inliteraryfictionlanguageandexperience, othernessandidentity, toleranceandintolerancelive together.Howwillthe“other”meettheItalianexperienceandtranslateitintoitsownexperience?Howis theconflictbetweenItaliancitizenshipand“foreign”roots,or,bettersaid, between“one’sown”rootsand anItalian“foreign”citizenshipovercome?Howisitpossibletoexpressthe“I”inaspecificlanguageandat the same time represent a world that doesn’t belong to Italy? There are many authors today writing in Italian, although their native language is not Italian. And many of them are now recognized for their excellentworksasapartofcurrentItalianliterature.Thiscourseoffersthereforeauniqueopportunityfor studentstostudyaparticularfieldofItalianLiteratureandtoappreciatenotonlythelanguage, butalsothe pathtointegrationamongmanydifferentcultureswithinourcountry.Studentswillalsodiscoverauthors like Helga Schneider, Giorgio Pressburger, Ornela Vorpsi, Igiaba Scego and many others not only through theirbooks, butalsomeetingthem.Studentsarealsoexpectedtoreadexcerptsfromtheirmasterpieces, fromarticlesandessaysaboutthetopicofthecourseandfinallytoreadtwobooksfromthereadinglist provided.
