Don Flavio Riva, Parish priest of the S. Stefano parish stated that: «Priests of my generation (I am heading towards my fifties!) will remember a book published a few years ago, written by a priest journalist: "Faccia da prete" (The Face of the Priest). Through such on set images we are conducted towards the extraordinary history of the cinema and we meet the faces of priests from the big screen. Some are very well known, others less so. It is the same in life. The face and the life of a priest pass as either a significant memory or as a fastidious and formal impression. And yet, in life it is difficult, at least here in the Occident, to go through life without having any connection whatsoever with a priest. Is it still a blessing to meet a genuine and authentic member of the priesthood? Who knows if behind such faces someone wishes to discover a man of faith, a personal friend through life's journey. As such, I would like to thank the volunteers of Excelsior, the Circolo culturale Don Bosco, the local town administrators and the other entities which have made it possible, once again, to encounter - "faces of priests"». The exhibition Priests in Cinema, on display at the Paolo e Davide Disarò Auditorium from Saturday 25th September to Sunday 10th October, consists of precious scene photos taken by some of the most famous photographers of Italian cinema. The photos range from 1918, the year of Frate Sole by Ugo Falena up until the very recent 'Io, loro e Lara' (2010) by Carlo Verdone, and include a comprehensive panorama of Italian cinema, focusing, primarily, on the major works which have made Italian cinema so internationally renowned. Through the diversely sized images - from the largest, almost enormous images to those of 70 x 90 - there is the possibility of following an itinerary which is rich in movement. The exhibition, which includes around one hundred photographs selected by the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo in collaboration with the photo archives of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, illustrates and traces the changes and the evolution of the figure of the priest in the history of, primarily Italian, cinema, from the period of silent movies up until the present day. It is a unique event in the sense that the majority of the photographs on display are on set photographs which have been especially submitted by the photo archives of the Centro Sperimentale, and which present the film protagonists both on set and in moments of respite. Through a highly diverse gallery of personalities - from don Bosco, originally played on the big screen by Giampaolo Rosmino in the major work by Goffredo Alessandrini in 1935, to don Camillo, played on numerous occasions by Fernandel, up until the disillusioned don Giulio in 'La messa è finita' (English title: 'The Mass is Ended') (1985) by Nanni Moretti and the very recent 'Io, loro e Lara' (2010) by Carlo Verdone - the aim of the exhibition is to stabilize a connection between cinema spectators and religion, attempting to interpret the development of cultural, political and religious trends which have taken place not only in Italy, but throughout the world. This prestigious event forms part of the Patronal Festival of the Parish of S. Stefano and the Film Festival promoted by the Province of Monza and Brianza.
