Gianfranco Facco Bonetti Benvenuti all’Annual Report 2014-15 di UWC Adriatic, che presenta una serie di articoli e immagini riguardanti i festeggiamenti ed eventi culturali dell’anno, e che vuole rendere omaggio al sostegno dei nostri ex allievi ed amici. La Alumni Reunion del luglio 2015 ha evidenziato il legame durevole che si instaura con un’educazione UWC – sia tra studenti, sia tra questi e il loro Collegio. La nostra straordinaria collocazione a Duino, che consente agli studenti di esplorare il meraviglioso patrimonio artistico italiano – sia paesaggistico, sia architettonico, sia storico e artistico – rende questo evento un’opportunità speciale affinché familiari e compagni degli ex allievi possano conoscere i luoghi e le persone di cui tanto hanno sentito parlare! La generosità dei singoli e delle istituzioni legate al Collegio a vario titolo – patroni, donatori, amministratori, studenti, docenti ed ex allievi – dimostra la loro fede nella mission e nei valori del Collegio. Continuiamo ad esistere grazie alla perdurante e significativa generosità dei nostri patroni, la Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia ed il Ministero degli Affari Esteri. Questi contributi vengono generosamente integrati dalle borse di studio erogate dai nostri donatori privati e aziendali. In anni recenti abbiamo anche beneficiato dalle attività di fundraising delle Commissioni Nazionali UWC di tutto il mondo, le quali selezionano i nostri studenti e comprendono il valore di un’esperienza presso UWC Adriatic. 4 Welcome to the UWC Adriatic 2014-15 Annual report. It provides a selection of articles and photographs taken at some of the celebrations and cultural events of that year and acknowledges the invaluable support we have received from our alumni and friends. The July 2015 Alumni Reunion demonstrated the lasting connections that are formed from a UWC education – between students and between the students and their college. Having such a unique location where students can explore so much about the glorious heritage of Italy – natural, architectural, historic, artistic – makes the reunion also a special opportunity for families and partners to actually see the places and people they have heard so much about! The generosity of different individuals and institutions involved in the College in different roles – Patrons, donors, administrators, students, teachers, alumni – demonstrates their faith in the mission and values of the College. Our continued existence is thanks to the constant and significant generosity of our Patrons, the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Their contributions are generously augmented by scholarships from our private and corporate donors. We have also greatly benefited in recent years from the fundraising activities of UWC National Committees around the world who select our students and understand the value of a UWC Adriatic experience. Infine, ma non da ultimo, siamo particolarmente grati agli ex allievi che sono riusciti ancora una volta a donare generosamente al Collegio – cosa non facile con tutti gli impegni cui si deve fare fronte. Se dobbiamo continuare a offrire un’istruzione trasformativa a coloro che la meritano ma che non potrebbero mai sostenerne i costi, il contributo ricevuto quest’anno da quanti conoscono di prima mano il valore di un simile investimento per le comunità, i paesi e il mondo tutto, è assolutamente indispensabile e insostituibile. Lastly, but by no means least, we are particularly grateful to the alumni who have once again succeeded in making a substantial number of financial gifts which cannot be easy to find with all the other demands on limited personal funds. If we are to continue being able to offer a lifechanging education to those who truly merit it but could never afford to pay for it for themselves the support we have been shown this year from those who understand the real value of this investment for communities, nations and indeed the world is invaluable and irreplaceable. I valori che da sempre promuove - comprensione internazionale e interculturale, celebrazione della differenza, responsabilità e rispetto comuni – sono cardine anche per una regione di confine come il Friuli Venezia Giulia, la cui vocazione è essere ponte tra genti, lingue, identità. From its inception the United World College of the Adriatic has aimed at making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures, thereby contributing to disseminating peace and promoting a sustainable future. The values upheld by the College – international and intercultural understanding, the celebration of difference, accountability and mutual respect – also are the cornerstones of a frontier region like Friuli Venezia Giulia, whose vocation is to build bridges to bring together people, languages and identities. È ancora più importante che questa “missione” venga incarnata dalla giovane comunità di studenti – selezionati unicamente sulla base del merito, con lo scopo promuovere la pace a la cooperazione internazionale – e che popola ogni anno il villaggio di Duino: un piccolo mondo che tanto ha da imparare, ma tanto ha anche da insegnare: è infatti un modello di convivenza, di valorizzazione della diversità, che è lezione quanto mai importante in un’Europa che viene interpellata ogni giorno sul tema dell’accoglienza. It is all the more essential that this “mission” be embodied by the young community of students – selected on merit alone for the purpose of promoting peace and international cooperation – that every year reaches Duino: a small community that has a lot to learn and also to teach. Indeed, the College is a model for the values of coexistence and celebration of difference that are so crucial in a European continent that is confronted daily with the issue of hospitality. La Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia è dunque orgogliosa di sostenere dalla sua fondazione, nel 1982, l’opera educativa e didattica del Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico, che vanta tra i suoi ex allievi figure di spicco – per ultima Chrystia Freeland, nominata recentemente ministro canadese del Commercio internazionale. È un patrimonio che rende concretamente “speciale” il Friuli Venezia Giulia. The Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia is thus proud to have supported from the outset – in 1982 – the educational and didactic endeavours of the United World College of the Adriatic, which can claim to have a number of distinguished alumni, of which the latest example is Chrystia Freeland - recently appointed Minister of International Trade in Canada. The College’s heritage tangibly contributes to making Friuli Venezia Giulia a most “special” place. In tutto il mondo, oltre 150 Commissioni Nazionali selezionano i candidati che poi vengono ammessi ai Collegi, secondo l’ordine di merito della classifica, in base alle borse di studio disponibili e anche tenendo conto delle preferenze espresse dallo studente. L’erogazione delle borse di studio avviene a seguito di un processo detto “means testing”, grazie al quale si verifica l’effettiva necessità economica dello studente idoneo a ricevere una borsa di studio, completa o parziale. Il candidato ideale unisce una spiccata capacità in campo accademico all’apertura mentale, alla tolleranza e alla comprensione per opinioni e atteggiamenti diversi dai propri. Inoltre, vista la probabile lontananza dall’ambiente familiare e l’impegno particolare richiesto dai programmi scolastici e dalle attività extra accademiche, deve possedere un buono stato di salute psicofisica. Le selezioni di norma alternano colloqui formali ad attività di gruppo, volte a verificare le attitudini e le motivazioni dei ragazzi. In Italia, la partecipazione ai Collegi del Mondo Unito è riservata agli studenti italiani che frequentano per la prima volta il terzo anno di un istituto di istruzione secondaria superiore e che, di norma, abbiano compiuto i 16 anni di età al momento di iniziare il biennio al Collegio. I vincitori del processo di selezione, per il biennio in corso, sono 38, provenienti dalle seguenti regioni d’Italia: Basilicata, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardia, Piemonte, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicilia, Toscana, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto. Essi stanno attualmente frequentando tutti e 15 i Collegi del Mondo Unito. UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future UWC Mission Statement A dmission to the United World Colleges is on the fundamental criteria of merit and potential. Over 150 National Commissions around the world select candidates who are then admitted to the Colleges based on the students’ ranking and the availability of scholarships, as well as on the preference expressed by the candidates. The scholarships are awarded after a process of “means testing” to ascertain the student’s financial needs in terms of a full or partial scholarship. The ideal candidate combines a sound academic ability with an open mind, a tolerant attitude and understanding of other opinions and attitudes. Given the likelihood of students being far from home and the particularly demanding academic programme, candidates must be in good physical and psychological health. Selections normally involve both formal interviews and group activities aimed at evaluating the youngsters’ approach and motivation. Italian applicants must be attending the third grade in high school for the first time and must, in normal circumstances, be 16 when starting their two years at a College. Thirty-eight students have been selected to attend a United World College this year, from the following Italian Regions: Basilicata, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Piedmont, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto. Per gli studenti italiani è importante sapere che il Diploma IB è riconosciuto ed equiparato ai diplomi della scuola secondaria di secondo grado ai sensi della Legge 30 ottobre 1986 n.738 (“Riconoscimento del diploma di Baccellierato Internazionale”, pubblicata nella Gazzetta Ufficiale n.258 del 6 novembre 1986). Tale diploma è riconosciuto anche dalle principali istituzioni universitarie nel mondo. Il piano di studi, definito su base individuale, prevede lo studio di sei materie selezionate da almeno cinque delle sei aree di raggruppamento IB (tra lingue, matematica, scienze naturali, scienze sociali, arte, storia e filosofia). Almeno tre materie sono studiate a livello superiore (HL) e le altre a livello standard (SL). È comunque obbligatorio: • seguire un corso interdisciplinare di Teoria della Conoscenza; • • • • Academics presentare una tesina in una delle materie studiate; intraprendere un’attività extra-accademica di servizio sociale; praticare con impegno un’attività sportiva; dedicarsi ad un’attività di tipo artistico-creativo. La lingua di insegnamento nei Collegi è l’inglese, con l’eccezione di alcune classi di lingua e letteratura. I Collegi, solitamente, forniscono un sostegno iniziale per l’apprendimento della lingua inglese durante o in preparazione dei due anni del programma accademico. Il corpo docente è reclutato su base internazionale per assicurare il più ampio ventaglio di metodologie e prospettive didattiche, come previsto dalle finalità pedagogiche del Baccellierato Internazionale. Il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S. (UWC Adriatic) ospita anche la sede dell’International Chamber Music Academy – Duino. Gli studenti ammessi al Collegio con un particolare talento e adeguata preparazione musicale, potranno essere ammessi alla frequenza gratuita dei corsi dell’International Chamber Music Academy – Duino, previa selezione da parte della Direzione Artistica della stessa. Science Labs All United World Colleges, whose courses cover the last two years of high school before university, follow the IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate). Italian students should know that the IB Diploma is officially recognized in Italy and equivalent to the Italian State Diploma, as per Law n. 738 dated 30th October 1986 (“Riconoscimento del diploma di Baccellierato Internazionale”, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale n.258 dated 6th November 1986). This diploma is also recognized by the main universities in the world. Students choose their own syllabus of six subjects, chosen from at least five of the six IB areas (languages, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, art, history, and philosophy). At least three subjects are studied at high level (HL) and the others at standard level (SL). It is obligatory to: Spanish class 10 www.uwcad.it • follow an interdisciplinary course on Theory of Knowledge; • • • • prepare a dissertation on one of the subjects; carry out an extra-curricular activity of community service; participate in a physical activity; be involved in an artistic-creative activity. Subjects are taught in English, with the exception of some language and literature classes. Colleges normally provide initial help in learning English during, or in preparation for the two years. Faculty are recruited internationally to ensure a broad range of teaching methodologies and perspectives, in keeping with the pedagogical objectives of the International Baccalaureate. UWC Adriatic (Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S.) hosts the International Chamber Music Academy on its premises in Duino. UWC Adriatic IB results 2006-2015 compared to World Average 12 www.uwcad.it 13 Academics Academics Post Diploma Guidance and University Fair For the sixth consecutive year, UWC Adriatic organised the University Fair, hosting fifteen US and Canadian Universities and Colleges. During the two-day programme, university admission officers gave presentations on what their institutions can offer our students, illustrating all of the scholarship opportunities. The presentations were followed by individual interviews and meetings with students who had the chance to ask more specific questions and present themselves in what is often part of the selection process. Orientamento e University Fair Per il sesto anno consecutivo, UWC Adriatic ha tenuto la University Fair, evento in cui 15 Università e College statunitensi e canadesi vengono ospitati al Collegio. Il programma, articolato su due giornate, prevede le presentazioni a cura dei responsabili delle iscrizioni universitarie su quanto le loro istituzioni hanno da offrire ai nostri studenti, illustrando anche tutte le borse di studio disponibili. Prima del tradizionale Peace One Day Show, gli studenti di Duino hanno visitato a Trieste la Risiera di San Sabba: dichiarato monumento nazionale nel 1965, è stato un campo di prigionia nazista ai tempi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale deputato allo smistamento dei deportati diretti in Germania e Polonia, un deposito dei beni razziat e un luogo di detenzione ed eliminazione di ostaggi, partigiani, detenuti politici ed ebrei. Gli studenti, in gruppi, sono poi stati ospitati a pranzo da varie associazioni, parrocchie e dalla Comunità Islamica triestina. Al pomeriggio si sono riuniti in Piazza Sant’Antonio, luogo centralissimo che si affaccia sul Canale di Ponte Rosso, dove il Peace One Day Show ancora una volta ha incantato i triestini e turisti di passaggio. 21st September 2014 marked a very special edition of UWC Adriatic’s traditional UWC Day celebrations. Before the traditional, must-see Peace One Day Show, students visited Trieste’s Risiera di San Sabba. A National Monument since 1965, it was formerly a Nazi prison camp where deported prisoners were sorted to be sent to Germany and Poland, a wharehouse for raided goods and a prison and an extermination camp for hostages, partisans, political and Jewish prisoners. Students were then organised into groups and had lunch with a number of associations, parishes and the local Islamic Community. As long as there are monsters, there will be this bird flying and crying so its tears can be of help. I don’t care what they say. I don’t care what they think. But I see that bird, I owe that bird, and I love that bird! It is Islam; it is Christianity; it is Judaism; it is Buddhism; it is Hinduism; it is religion! It is the bird which holds the message of all religions: PEACE! I will leave my religion only if you give me a reason......! One year after visiting the College, Shelby Davis and his wife Gale have set up a programme for all the United World Colleges, under which one million dollars are at the disposal of each College as a matching fund to double donations from alumni, families and friends. The programme aims to increase donations from the UWC community; in fact, the matching mechanism is triggered by the increase in the number of donors from year to year. Alumnus Darren Huston (ADC 83-85), CEO of The Priceline Group (Booking. com), visited the College in April 2015 and held a lecture for the current students. This visit gave rise to the “Booking.com Scholarship”, based on bookings made by alumni, staff and students through Booking.com: the greater the value of the bookings, the higher the grant! Aldo Pianciamore and from the President, Marchesa Etta Carignani. 41 Facts on College Development Fondazione per i Collegi del Mondo Unito Stock Weinberg - Edward Sutcliffe O.N.L.U.S. Facts on College Development The “Fondazione per i Collegi del Mondo Unito Stock Weinberg - Edward Sutcliffe O.N.L.U.S.” L’iniziativa nasce da un incontro, anzi, da incontri di persone con storie diverse ed un ideale comune. Liliana Stock Weinberg aveva costituito una fondazione per gli studi sulla coesistenza tra i popoli, e da tempo offriva una borsa di studio per uno studente palestinese e uno israeliano, per il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico. David ed Elisabeth Sutcliffe avevano conosciuto la costiera triestina negli anni ’60, durante il loro viaggio di nozze in Italia, e vent’anni dopo si erano trasferiti a Duino per fondare il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico. La tragica scomparsa del loro ultimogenito Edward, già studente del Collegio, diede il via alla creazione di un fondo per borse di studio in sua memoria. Ultimamente, David ed Elisabeth avevano espresso il desiderio di donare al movimento in Italia la loro casa di montagna in Italia, a rafforzare ulteriormente il loro legame con il Collegio di Duino ed il movimento dei Collegi del Mondo Unito. La Fondazione, che porta il nome Stock Weinberg-Edward Sutcliffe, è stata istituita con atto notarile il 17 aprile 2015, ha ottenuto lo status di ONLUS il 12 giugno successivo e la personalità giuridica il 26 luglio 2015. Al patrimonio iniziale della Fondazione sono stati conferiti il fondo Edward Sutcliffe, da parte del Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S., il patrimonio residuo della Fondazione Stock Weinberg, e la proprietà immobiliare di David ed Elisabeth Sutcliffe a Sauris, in Italia. Lo scopo statutario della Fondazione è la raccolta di fondi per l’erogazione di borse di studio. Il Presidente è Filippo Nicolis di Robilant, che ha frequentato il Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Atlantico nel biennio 1975/77. David and Elizabeth Sutcliffe during their latest visit in Duino Ms. Liliana Stock Weinberg, co-founder of the “Fondazione” This initiative was born from an encounter, or rather a series of encounters with people with different histories but sharing the same ideal. Liliana Stock Weinberg had set up a foundation for the study of coexistence among peoples, and had for some time provided a scholarship for a Palestinian and Israeli student to attend the United World College in Duino. David and Elisabeth Sutcliffe first discovered the coastal area of Trieste in the 60’s during their honeymoon in Italy and twenty years later they moved to Duino to found the United World College of the Adriatic. The tragic loss of their youngest son, Edward, a student at the College, gave birth to an endowment fund in his memory. Of late, David and Elisabeth had expressed the desire to donate their house in the mountains to the movement, to further reinforce their ties with the College in Duino and with the UWC movement. The Foundation, named Stock Weinberg-Edward Sutcliffe, was established by notarial act on 17th April 2015, was given ONLUS (Charity) status on 12th June, and granted legal personality on 26th July 2015. The Foundation’s initial assets consist of the Edward Sutcliffe Endowment fund conferred by the Collegio del Mondo Unito dell’Adriatico O.N.L.U.S., the residual assets of the Fondazione Stock Weinberg, and the real estate of David and Elisabeth Sutcliffe in Sauris, Italy. The statutory purpose of the Foundation is to raise funds to disburse scholarships. Ogni donazione all’Annual Fund superiore ai 1.000 Euro viene raddoppiata da un comitato di Alumni. Le donazioni all’Annual Fund partecipano anche al programma Davis-UWC Impact. Total: € 173,985.41 Italian Challenge Matcher Italian Challenge Matched Donors All’interno dell’Annual Fund, la campagna per le borse di studio italiane è una tradizione consolidata. È dedicata alla raccolta di fondi per offrire borse di studio a ragazzi e ragazze italiane, per tutti i Collegi del Mondo Unito. Un anonimo donatore triplica le donazioni fatte per questa campagna. Le donazioni per la Italian Campaign partecipano anche al programma Davis-UWC Impact. Reunion Campaign In occasione della riunione annuale degli ex-studenti, che festeggiano il trentennale dal diploma insieme con generazioni più giovani (10-15-25), viene lanciata una campagna di raccolta fondi per offrire borse di studio. Un comitato di donatori tra gli ex-studenti raddoppia le donazioni fatte in occasione della riunione. Le donazioni per la Reunion Campaign partecipano al programma Davis-UWC Impact. Annual Fund Challenge The Annual Fund is the College’s fundraising programme to finance scholarships and is the main driving force to ensure the uniqueness of the United World Colleges. Each donation to the Annual Fund of 1,000 Euro or more is doubled by a matching committee of alumni. Donations to the Annual Fund are eligible under the Davis-UWC Impact programme. Italian Challenge Within the Annual Fund, the Italian Challenge is now a consolidated tradition. It is dedicated to raising funds for scholarships for Italian students to attend any of the United World Colleges. An anonymous donor triples the donations made under this campaign. Donations to the Italian Challenge are eligible under the Davis-UWC Impact programme. Reunion Campaign Reunion Campaign. A fund raising campaign is associated with the Annual Reunion of alumni celebrating their 30th graduation anniversary, together with the younger generations (10-15-25 years), to finance scholarships. A committee of alumni donors match the donations made on this occasion.
