Pippo Contarino
Durante gli anni duri del dopoguerra, il 18 ottobre del ’49, nella città di Acireale celebrata per il barocco ed i cento campanili, nasce Pippo Contarino, da papà Rosario, infaticabile calzolaio, e da mamma Angela, semplice
casalinga. Agli albori degli anni ’60, gli anni del boom economico, il Contarino appena adolescente, si iscrive alla “Città del Fanciullo”, Istituto di formazione professionale della Regione Siciliana, e consegue, nel 1965, il
diploma di operaio specializzato. Ma il giovanissimo studente non ha imparato un mestiere qualunque, ha sempre avuto un sogno nel cassetto e l’ha perseguito scegliendo il metallo duro, il ferro, come oggetto del suo
studio e del suo lavoro. Entra così nella bottega di Raffaele Greco, Maestro acese del ferro battuto, sotto la cui guida affida le sue doti e perfeziona l’utilizzo degli strumenti. Arriva poi il 1968, con i fermenti di contestazione
e le istanze di rinnovamento: Pippo Contarino diventa il pupillo di un altro grande in quest’ambito, lo scultore Giuseppe Esterini, e nella bottega di lui arricchisce il suo patrimonio formativo e dà prova della qualità del suo
lavoro. Come forgiato dal suo metallo, Pippo Contarino raggiunge la maturità espressiva e l’autonomia. E’ il 1972 quando egli inaugura la sua bottega a Pozzillo, ineguagliabile frazione di Acireale, quasi sospesa tra l’azzurro
dello Jonio, l’odor di zagara dei verdi agrumeti, l’Etna maestosa. Le sue opere ed il suo nome hanno ormai varcato lo stretto: Pippo Contarino partecipa alle più note Rassegne, nazionali ed internazionali; incontra, collabora e
si confronta con Maestri del ferro battuto di varie nazionalità, americani, giapponesi, russi, israeliani, oltre che italiani; le sue realizzazioni si distinguono ovunque per l’alta professionalità della scuola e la geniale creatività
dell’artista.
Riconoscimento ufficiale alla carriera è il titolo di Cavaliere del Lavoro che gli viene conferito dal Presidente della Repubblica Italiana e che, per questo, gli è particolarmente caro. Si ricordano tra le sue opere lo Stemma
cittadino donato a Stia, quale contributo all’A.I.R.C. (1990); il Monumento alla vita, una mano per chi soffre (mt.8,5x4), ancora per l’A.I.R.C., sempre nel 1990; un Crocefisso in lamiera sbalzata (mt.3x2) per la Cappella
dell’Unione Artigiani Acesi, nel cimitero di Acireale (1994); la scultura Le due ciliegie per il cancello del teatro Globe di Londra, a cui lavora insieme ai fabbri provenienti da ogni parte del mondo (1999); la X stazione della Via
Crucis per l’Associazione “Gli amici di Ermanno”, a Coenzo-Parma (2000); lo Stemma della 115.ma Polveriera dello Stato Italiano per l’Aviazione militare, in Vizzini-Catania (2001); il Castagno dei Cento Cavalli, interpretato
insieme ai fabbri di tutta Europa, in S.Alfio di Giarre (2001); la Stella di Riflesso, monumento alto mt.4, donato alla città di Veroli-Frosinone in memoria dei caduti nei cinque continenti e realizzato dai soci fondatori del Centro
Culturale Professionale d’Arte Etneo, di cui il Cavaliere Contarino è Presidente (2003); l’opera ispirata al tema della Rassegna “Ferraculum 2006”; “Dal profumo di zagara alle note di Strass per un concerto di incudini e
martelli”, Rassegna per partecipare alla quale ha avuto, dal Sindaco di Ybbsitz, l’incarico di formare la squadra italiana del ferro battuto.
nel 2007 si presenta per la prima volta in Ucraina, nella città di Ivano Frankiusk, quale presidente della squadra italiana dove si realizza l’emblema dei fabbri di tutto il mondo;
nel 2008 ritorna al 6° Festival Internazionale del ferro Battuto in Ucraina, dove si esibisce con una fantasia artistica;
nel 2008, la città di stia in provincia di Arezzo, gli conferisce il titolo di “Ambasciatore del Ferro battuto all’estero”;
sempre nel 2008 si presenta ad una rassegna di maestri internazionali nella città di Lendelede (Belgio) dove realizza l’opera “La spiga virtuale”;
nel settembre del 2009 partecipa alla rassegna del ferro denominata “Arts du Feu”, in Vabonne, Francia;
Nel gennaio del 2010 in Agrigento, grazie all’invito del “Lion Club International”, si esibisce nell’estemporanea del ferro battuto (durante la conferenza tenuta dal Prof.Dott.Josuè Vetro) sull’obesità infantile;
Dal 2000 al 2010 è membro dell’Associazione “Dell’anello Europeo delle citta del Ferro”, per la città di Acireale;
nell’agosto del 2010 gli viene conferito il premio alla carriera “Isidoro Platania” quale miglior artigiano;
nel 2009 dona al Santuario di “Maria Santissima della Catena” una Ninfa dell’altezza di mt.2xlarghezza mt.1,10;
nel 2009 Mons.carlo Chiarenza, Decano della Basilica di S.Sebastiano in Acireale, riceve in dono delle Lanterne Professionali dal Maestro Contarino;
nel 2009 il sacerdote Padre Arcifa riceve dal Cav.Contarino il sostegno in ferro forgiato per l’appoggio della “Croce Professionale”, di antica fattura;
nel 2009 il sid. di Aci S.Antonio, dott. Pippo Cutuli, incarica il Maestro Pippo Contarino alla realizzazione del monumento denominato “Uomo Uccello”, in memoria di Angelo D’Arrigo;
nel 2010 il sid. Di Castiglione di Sicilia, dott. Claudio Scavera, incarica al Cav.Contarino la realizzazione di una splendida Chiave finemente in ferro forgiata, simbolo della città, donata alla Santissima Padrona
“Madre della Catena”.
Tra le tante onorificenze l’artista Contarino ama ricordare il titolo di “Maestro del ferro” conferitogli dalla città di Stia, l’ “Aquila d’argento” dall’Associazione Gli Etruschi, il premio “Aci e Galatea 2005 alla carriera” riservato dal
Cine Foto Club omonimo a tutti i siciliani che si sono distinti nel mondo ed, infine, la sua presenza nel primo Museo del Ferro, creato proprio nel 2006 ad Ybbsitz, in Austria; e qui Pippo contarino è l’unico fabbro italiano,
insieme ad uno ucraino, un giapponese ed un francese.
Se non dimentica di aver saputo portare alto in Italia, in Europa ed oltre il nome della Sicilia e della sua città natale, Pippo Contarino concilia amabilmente la conoscenza profonda della lavorazione del metallo, che egli forgia
nel modo più idoneo ad esprimere, di volta in volta, la sua visione artistica, e la memoria del mito greco. Gioca così ad identificarsi con un ipotetico figlio di Efesto, il dio del ferro e del fuoco che proprio nelle viscere del
vulcano Etna aveva la sua fucina. E, da lì, il ritmico battere di incudine e martello scandisce l’umile tranquillità del lavoro quotidiano, che subito si traduce, per lui, nell’armonia coinvolgente di un concerto ancora di Strass,
quasi il senso di una vita.

“Un Gioco di Linea”
During the hard years of war, on October 18th of '49, in the town of Acireale celebrated for the Baroque and the hundred bell towers, Pippo Contarino
was born from father Rosario, tireless shoemaker, and mother Angela, a simple housewife. At the dawn of the '60s, the years of economic boom,
Contarino as a t eenager, he enrolled in the "City of the Child", Institute of Vocational Training of the Sicilian Region, and therefore, in 1965, the
diploma of a skilled worker. But the young student did not learn a trade, whatever, has always had a dream pursued and broke it by choosing the
carbide, iron, as the object of his study and his work. Log in as the workshop of Raffaele Greek, Maestro acese wrought iron, under whose leadership
relies on his skills and perfect the use of instruments. Then comes 1968, with the ferment of protest and demands for renewal: John Contarino
becomes the pupil of another great in this, the sculptor Giuseppe Esterini s hop and he enriched the heritage and prove educational q uality of his
w ork. As forged by its metal, Goofy Contarino reached maturity of expression and ndependence.
In 1972 he opened his shop in Pozzillo, incomparable village of Acireale, almost suspended between the blue of the Ionian sea, the smell of
orange blossoms of citrus green, majestic Mount Etna. His works and his name have now crossed the strait: John Contarino participate in the most
popular shows, national and international meets, works and compares with the Masters of the wrought iron of various nationalities, American,
Japanese, Russians, Israelis, as well as Italian; his accomplishments stand out anywhere for the high professionalism of the school and the brilliant
creativity of the artist.
Official recognition for his career is the title of Cavaliere del Lavoro, which he was awarded by the President of the Italian Republic and that, therefore,
is particularly dear to him. It is reminiscent of his works given the “Stemma” work donated to city of Stia, as a contribution to AIRC (1990), the
“Monumento alla vita, una mano per chi soffre” (mt.8,5x4), again for the AIRC, again in 1990, a “Crocefisso” embossed sheet (mt.3x2) for the
Artisans Union Chapel Aces the cemetery in Acireale (1994), the sculpture “Le due ciliegie” to the gate of the Globe Theatre in London, which works
in conjunction with blacksmiths from all over the world (1999), the “X stazione della Via Crucis” for the Association " Friends of Hermann, a CoenzoParma (2000); 115.ma Powder coat of arms of the Italian Military Aviation in Vizzini, Catania (2001), the “Castagno dei Cento Cavalli”, played
together with the smiths of all Europe, S. Alfio Giarre (2001 ”La stella di riflesso”, mt.4 high monument was donated to the city of Frosinone Veroli-in
memory of those killed in the five continents and built by the founding members of the Cultural Center of Arts Professional Etneo , of which the
Knight is President Contarino (2003), the work inspired by the theme of the Exhibition "Ferraculum 2006" ; "From the scent of orange blossom
notes for a concert of Strauss' anvils and hammers, to participate in the review which had , the Mayor of Ybbsitz, the task of forming the team of Italian
wrought iron.
- In 2007, is presented for the first time in Ukraine, in the city of Ivano Frankiusk as President of the Italian team which is made the emblem of the
blacksmiths from all over the world;
- Back in 2008 the 6th International Festival of wrought iron in Ukraine, where he performs with an artistic imagination;
- In 2008, the city is in the province of Arezzo, giving it the title of "Ambasciatore del Ferro battuto all’estero";
- Also in 2008, presents an overview of international teachers in the city of Lendelede (Belgium) where he produced the opera "La spiga virtuale";
- In September 2009 involved the review of iron known as "Arts du Feu" in Vabonne, France;
- In January of 2010 in Agrigento, at the invitation of the "Lions Club International, performs nell'estemporanea wrought iron (during the conference held
by Prof.Dott.Josuè Glass) childhood obesity;
- From 2000 to 2010 is a member of the " Dell’anello Europeo delle citta del Ferro " for the city of Acireale;
- August 2010 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award "Isidoro Platania" as the best craftsman;
- In 2009 gives the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Catena " a “Ninfa of mt.2x mt.1, 10;
- In 2009 Mons.carlo Chiarenza, dean of the Basilica of S. Sebastiano in Acireale, receives a gift from the Master of Professional Lanterns Contarino;
- In 2009 the priest Father Arcifa Cav.Contarino receives support from wrought iron for the support of "cross training", an old invoice;
- In 2009, sid. Aci S. Antonio, dr. Cutuli Pippo, Pippo Contarino Master Instructs the creation of the monument called the "Bird Man", in memory of
Angelo D'Arrigo;
- In 2010, sid. Castiglione di Sicilia, dr.Claudio Scavera instructs Cav.Contarino to build a beautiful finely wrought iron key, a symbol of the city,
donated to the Holy Mistress "Madre della Catena."
Among the many honors the artist Contarino loves to recall the title of “Maestro del ferro” conferred by the cit y of Stia, the 'Silver Eagle" by the
Etruscans, the prize "Aci and Galatea 2005 Lifetime Achievement" from the private Cine Photo Club namesake all the Sicilians who have distinguished
themselves in the world and, finally, its first presence in the Museum of Iron, created in 2006 to just Ybbsitz, Austria, and here Contarino is the only
Italian blacksmith, along with a Ukrainian, a Japanese and a Frenchman.
If you have not forgotten how to bring up in Italy, Europe and beyond in the name of Sicily and his hometown , the Cav. Contarino amiably combines
a deep knowledge of metal working, which he forged in the most appropriate way to express, in their time, his artistic vision, and memory of the
greek myth. Play it to identify with a hypothetical son of Hephaestus, the god of iron and fire in the bowels of the volcano Etna just had his forge. And
from there, the rhythmic beat of the hammer and anvil beats the humble peace of daily work, which immediately translates for him, engaging in the
harmony of a concert of Strauss still, almost a sense of life.
