EVENEMENT LIE A L’EXPOSITION

contact “huid tegen huid” centraal.

PRESS RELEASE
OFFICINA is pleased to announce the opening on 19 April of La PELLE,
a group exhibition by FONDACO
La PELLE (Skin)
Step by step we caress the skin of the earth, showing our affection for the world. A caressing gesture which
has taken place for century, at times absent-mindedly, but always relentlessly. Primordial contact of the
artistic gesture. The genesis of feeling shifts from body to vision, shape reflected on the retina, the skin of
the image, the tactile origin of the gaze.
The attraction for a dialogue between the body and the world, both in its ontological and
philological sense, constitues the leit motiv of the exhibition La PELLE.
The creative tensions expressed by the participating artists in many different ways and
languages and according to different research paths, originate from a common matrix:
the body as the principal element enabling to experience the world. It is only after having
felt, seen, touched, heard the world, that we can start to remember and imagine, in order for
us to be able to re-draw the reality and re-build our self.
In the research carried out by Grilli, Dell’Angelo and Losi, it is in the physical presence,
“in the here and now”, that body energy, coming into contact with objects, materials and
places, is explored in real time. This contact leads to new forms of awareness drawing
from, and bringing to light, the consciousness of our transformative energy.
The performing process of the “skin to skin” contact is at the core of the works by
Fineschi, Magni, Maccari, Cattaneo and Piangiamore. It underlines a strong
synaesthesia component between the artist and the work, the possibility of shifting from
one sensory path to another. In the context of the process of accumulation or
subtraction of the matter, and of the artist's relationship with (inhabited and inhabitable)
space, this element generates a process of liberation.
In the works by Morganti, Corsini and Montani, the skin becomes a metaphor and
expresses the search for an absolute dimension of the colour and the inhabited objects,
thus exploring the relationship between essence and form.
The skin and its reticular undercurrents become, in the works by Di Maggio, De Mattei
and Guido, the architectural structure supporting and putting in relation the organic and
the inorganic, paradigm of the soul of things.
Skin is also the skin of the “other”, what stands outside us: in their works, Roma,
Pediconi, Della Valle, Lauretta and Cotognini, aim, including by making historicalmythological digressions, at a Panic vision, moving with caution, but at the same time
with the liberating desire to tear down barriers, the boundaries between the human being
and nature.

RELATED EVENT
On the occasion of a private view of the exhibition, Francesca Grilli will carry out a performance
(Sunday 24 April, 11-1pm by invitation only). Francesca Grilli’s work was shown at the 2013 Venice
Biennale; she has participated in a number of Art Performance Festivals. Her performance is based on
participation and experiment; the body and its potentials are at the centre of her research. Her
‘provocations’ to performers and spectators aim at involving them in a proactive way, leading them
to assuming a risk, to accept making a gesture of generous self-deliverance, as it is for the artist.
The catalog of the exhibition, printed by Gli Ori, Editori Contemporanei, will be presented in June.
Date will be communicated later.

La PELLE marks the opening of FONDACO's
activities in Brussels. FONDACO is an artists'
association founded in 2015, consisting now
of 19 members and aiming at enhancing
contemporary Italian art presence on the
international scene. The curatorial role is
expressed collectively with participants'
voluntary proposals. The exchange network
between artists aims also at becoming a
network of exchange of ideas between artists
and the public. The 'domestic' dimension in
which FONDACO presents art works, moving
away from the usual institutional and
commercial approach, pursues different,
more informal and natural ways of coming
closer to art. FONDACO's intention is to remain
active on the Brussels art scene after this
exhibition.
Officina, an Associazione Culturale the

COMUNICATO STAMPA
dell’immagine, origine tattile dello sguardo.

2016. La data sarà comunicata in seguito.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Milano.
My work is moving along two tracks: the image that originated before the work itself and the material that suggests a
gesture. These two tracks come together at some point and, through matter, the original image becomes thought. So the
process of producing the art work implies continuous changes, cancellations and new beginnings. Like when you are faced
with a very beautiful landscape and you have the feeling that you can not really see it, you are stuck in front of this vision.
Then something starts to happen and you can see the first details. My work originates from a feeling of this kind, by a sort
of contradiction, by an inability to see which makes you stop in that suspended space that exists just before a real perception
of the world. The connections between things, labile or solid, have always been at the origin of major questions arising in
my work. Everything is constructed through a non-hierarchical and non-linear system. My sculptures come from an image
that originates before the work itself. This image develops and takes shape during the execution process, since it involves
the contradictions and limits of the materials, often leading me in unexpected directions.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Florence, Italy.
From the start and through several declinations, my research has focused on the theme of inhabiting as a mental archetype
or as a place where individuals define and fulfill themselves.
My works have always staged a suspended condition between the memory of inhabiting and its real possibility.
In its version both as object or environment as well as on an urban scale, the image of the house is a constant icon in my
research.
I have always been drawn to the profiles of things more than the things themselves or their bodies. Throughout the years,
I have made a sort of visual inventory of the elements of a dwelling: sculptures and essential installations in the form that
recalls everyday use objects, but is also capable of triggering emotions and reflections; a constitutive material fragility
corresponds to the absolute iconographic sketchiness and stiffness of silhouettes. Glass in fact has always been a material
loved for the inevitable stress reaction it triggers and the consequent care and attention it requires.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Civitanova Marche, Italy.
My artistic research is based on the idea of contamination:interactions, trespassings, fusions between images and wordsigns. Through all these means, I aim at creating new icons. Cautiously using the verbal painting’s idea. The meaning of my
work is this. Using words, colours, architectures, pictures, maps, I am trying, through contamination, to force the image to
become imagination. We have forms that are changing, they try to develop, they express a construction process. The verbal
element with its physical presence doesn’t exist anymore. Identification words change of nature, from being descriptive they
develop to some structure, finally turning to architecture . The subject of my work is the concept writing – antiwriting.
I would like my works to become places of contemplation and, at the same time, of reflexion and concentration. Taking
again possession of surfaces and establishing an analytical relationship with ancestral, alchemical or mysteriosophical signs,
I try develop a research that regains the Renaissance imagery in order to produce complex structures, aesthetical rebuses
where it is possible to retrace signs and drawings that, on the one hand, look for harmony and centrality, while, on the other
hand, require an essential irregularity and a necessary lateral development of the composition.

I live and work in Berlin.
My research moves from the basis of the photographic technique, from the study of the physical and emotional traces left by
light. The image concretise by its flowing in time and becomes stratified in the memory of places, on the skin on things, in
short-lived events. What is not visible, has disappeared, is imagined or is about to happen is in this way engraved, turning
up as a ‘trace’ of a phenomenology of the invisible and underground world. The eye focuses on the fascination of the daily
reality and its quiet visibility.
Throughout these themes, my work develops in different languages, through photographic images, videos or site-specific
installations.

I live and work in Milan, Italy.
My research relates to the human body through its postures as well as from an anthropological and existential point of view.
I use a variety of visual languages ranging from painting to video installation, drawing and performance.
In my work the body, although aware of being a container, is often questioned as a content; it is precisely from this
relationship of continuous exchange of two status, different but essential for each other, that originates the form and the
space of my work, whatever visual language I chose to use.
I am interested in neuroscience and anthropology, and I have published the Manual of the human figure (2007). Ed. The
Ori, Italy as well as, together with Ludovica Lumer, C’è da Perderci la testa, Ed. Laterza, Italy.

I live and work in London, Uk.
In my work, I resort to a wide range of art expressions, including sculpture, video, drawing and installation. I am interested
in the inter-relation between human beings and nature.
I explore the means and criteria of people to face and adapt to the surrounding environment, emphasizing the romantic
aspect of this failing effort.
My work often proceeds through an experimental approach, using plans, architects’ sketches and codes and shaping them
into natural objects or superimposing them on the landscape.
Applying the rules and measurements of these plans, sketches and codes to a different end, such as a sculpture or a site
specific installation , implies a changing of scale and context, which eliminates their original practical utility and reveals
their poetical nature.
Recently I have started to question the privileged place that animals have and always had in human life as in art history,
trying to understand the relation of desire and empathy that leads men to possess and to observe animals.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Venezia, Italy.
I have been pursuing a research attempting to highlight two elements which are - in my view - essential in life: communication networks which are needed for information transmission, and the suitable amount of time necessary to make this
transfer possible. In other words, I am trying to highlight the close links exhisting between the grids, structures and circuits
belonging to different worlds but also part of our everyday life. I am referring for instance to the complex structure of lymph
vessels in leaves, or subway maps, or the shape of a nerve cell: if looked at closely, these seemingly unrelated elements show
instead many analogies and much resonance. I take my subjects from the real world, starting from anthropological, botanic,
urban illustrations, but also from embroideries and wallpaper patterns belonging to everyday domestic life. All this process
hints at a metaphorical thinking on the way we live as parts of a whole which seems constantly repeating some laws of
fractal proliferation, thus providing the world with a sense of movement and fruitfulness. The working method is always the
same: piercing, cutting different materials (tissue, paper sheets, plant leaves, soaps, china, wall plaster) with sharp surgical
knives. I cut across these materials and the results are works that can be seen as sharing a common theme: the shapes that
nature takes in its process of expansion and organisation.

STATEMENT
I live and work between Siena (Italy) and Brussels (Belgium).
My work aims at creating a condition of contextuality, a “perpetual present” in which the relationship between life and
death is simplified in the act of living. My exploration originates from a simple concept: the impermanence of all things, to
which I oppose a personal form of resistance, in a shaky equilibrium between opposites.
In this condition of continuous transformation, attention to or care for the present (where individual and collective memory
meet, along with future prospects and common occurrences and everyday gestures) is a way to come to an awareness.
My intervention slots in this real-yet-illusory temporal separation, into the shift between the present-continuous interior
time of consciousness and the exterior time of biological life, which is bound to pass. The experience of life is a continuous
alternation between these temporal states, with death representing both end and continuity, not only through memory,
which is unique in its subjective manifestation, but as universal participation in the perpetual mutation of life form. Action
as a form of presence in the world and memory as a condition of existence come together in the uniqueness of experience,
which thus becomes the universal experience of the self. The process of the work is a journey discovered in the making, but
is supported by strongly-rooted theoretical and spiritual convictions. The performance aspect emerging from my actions is
thus not so important as a public representation, but constitutes the active and “formal” rendering of a piece at the moment
of its realisation.

STATEMENT
I live and work between The Netherlands and Belgium.
My approach is based on human communication and form. Whether evoked visually through videoproduction, images,
performances (The second conversation, The third conversation, 2008), or a voice over commentary (such as in the videos
194.9 MHz and Gordon - 2007), the issue is rather evident.
Dipped in an emotional light and in a controlled and rigorous time articulation, I believe my works ooze autobiographical
moods and tension immersed in a suspended and enigmatic atmosphere which slides towards the public in a sensual, and
virtually, decadent fashion. These two aspects are not in contrast, nor does one prevail on the other. They simply exist and
reverberate one into the other. In my research two potentially spinal aspects vibrate: the treatment of sound in all its forms
and registers, and the viewer’s space of action. The former is a linguistic element with indefinite possibilities of expressive
modulation and the latter is an immense territory. In the videos the attention is placed on the complexity of the innermost
story and on the multi-level temporal conjugation, whilst in the performance I search for the intensity of the action. I enjoy
showing the countless, yet, mostly invisible perceptual crevices which can either welcome or reject once and for all the viewer, in that ever unhinging territory, because ever so personal, which is my work.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Milan, Italy.
I have produced what has been defined as an enigmatic and compelling body of work based on the analogy and interpretation of organic and architectural forms.
In my recent research I have focused on the garden, which combines nature with an intellectualapproach. Using different
media and materials, I produce works which reveal the relationship between architecture, history and images of nature.
From the study of the geometric structure of flowers and plants drawings are born which relate to the process of creation of
cathedrals, mausoleums, often taken from ancient maps. An important element in my research is the use of numbers in the
geometric design, which refers to the planetary system in which are inscribed both the garden (where the vegetal element
grows) and the architectural plan.
The garden, in fact, constitutes a central tropus in my formal universe, which presupposes two related, yet not entirely comparable artistic operations: selection and montage.

I live and work in Piacenza, Italy.
I look to nature and science likes sources of inspiration as well as to the historical and anthropological aspect of the environment. Working in a variety of media, from site-specific installations, sculpture and video to works on textile and paper,
I also explore the concept of story-telling through art and writing, often using projects to link and create new communities
of human interaction.
My artistic quest is dedicated to the relationship between the human being and nature and travelling and exploration as
experiences of knowledge.
Walking and experiencing and in-depth knowledge of sites are focal aspects of my research. My interests encompass different disciplines, from natural science, such as ethnology and geology, to geography, cartography, literature, poetry.
Hence my work softly blends ecological concerns and social considerations. Nature, the source and food of thoughts, becomes a boost to raise our awareness with respect to our relationship with natural and social environment and with the rules
underlying them.
I have carried out a number of projects based on participation and relationship: projects, centred around objects acting as
catalysts of energies, experiences, memories, that have turned into collective operations.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Siena, Italy.
My work has always being developing in a precarious balance in the permanent confrontation between figurative and abstract art. In an attempt to cross this border, I try to trespass the pictorial substance ,continuously seeking a gesture, a creative act which could lead me beyond painting. My research imposes an organised chaos between the different forms of art,
between the various languages that I use in my art works. This dimension of entropy and control enveils a hidden territory
where painting emerges without painting and is accomplished naturally, without resorting to its traditional means . The
enamel, present in almost all my paintings, seems to assert a desire of immobility, whilst it is on the contrary the element
generating the formal dynamism, the perpetual movement present in my works.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Milan, Italy.
My work is connected to the memory of the body, in which the surface becomes the place of conflict and pleasure, the filter
where the marks of consequences of our relationship with the world get tangled up. The emergence of depth, coming to
the surface, like an interior that is brought out and turned into a sculpture, is a conceptual exercise, but at the same time a
carnal exercise.
I always saw sculpture as an extension of the senses, a form of sentimental education through which one comes to know the
self and the other. For me, sculpture, is a continuous questioning of the imperfections of our existence, and of the enthusiasm
produced when, from those imperfections, a new harmony is reached. The history of sculpture coincides with the history of
the skin. It is a history of many paradoxes, as the skin is a system to protect our individuality and at the same time a place of
exchange with others. Skin preserves our inside from external forces, yet it bears the marks of these impacts and exchanges.
Sculpture, likewise, deals with the differences and exchanges between us: a constellation of habits, impulses, dispositions
and behavioral traits become form. The structure of a sculpture becomes a sort of cognitive structure open to affective experience within a shared, vulnerable space.

STATEMENT
I live and work in Rome, Italy.
I have been working for a long time on the skin of the city, by using sheets of sand paper to pick up the colour and anything
else from the wall surfaces which could restore a sign, a trace, an urban colour back. I have also made paintings by
substraction, always using sandpaper, uncovering in this case thin layers of different and overlapping colours and hues, the
last covering the previous one and so on, to come to a final image bringing to light all the previously veiled layering. With
the passing of time the aggressive action of sandpapering has slowly shifted into the opposite: a great attention paid to the
surface of sandpaper through very liquid sheer colour glazing, mostly royal blue. The relation being established between the
two surfaces is very meaningful to me. I have often titled these works “Corpo” - Body – where body refers to the most visible
and external part of the body, the skin. In my work there is a transcendent veil being placed at the same time between the
inside and the outside, the infinitely big and the infinitely small. More recently I have made wax sculptures melting slowly.
The figures covered by a shiny veil of white wax also hide some layers of colour inside. At the end of the melting process
everything is brought to light, in such a way that the skin of the work is made of what was before its inner body.
On the idea of translucency and surface I can say that
- All art is just a veil, in some cases a metaphorical one, in other (as in my case) a tangible one.
- In the mystery of this veil, the role of translucency consists in reconciling the visible with the invisible, without the former
prevailing over the latter and vice versa, so constantly relaunching the possibility of the gaze.

I live and work in Venice, Italy.
The experience of colour is at the centre of my work : colour as substance, as a trace of existence. The pictorial procedure
that takes place with precise regularity inside my space is often placed in close relation with other realities.
At the centre of my research are themes such as time, the diary, sedimentation, the persistence of the pictorial gesture, and
painting in relation to space. The existential experience, time again, leaves a trace of its passing through the substance-colour. The form is the result of following my method, the process is more important than the form.
My paintings are the consequence of the sedimentation of layers of colour that I paint on the canvases every day. Visually,
they almost look like monochrome paintings with just a small multi-layered strip at the top, which bears witness to the various passages. The continuity of painting is how I deal with my gesture: spreading substance on a surface, its sedimentation,
nothing more than adding an action to other actions that were already completed or are in the process of being completed.

STATEMENT
I Live and work in New York, US.
My work is charged with mystery and amazement. The gesture I perform generates a process while remaining capable of
capturing and accepting the unexpected: advance and retreat, action and perception.
My work bears witness to the possibility of another form of painting: painting that “mutates” not on the canvas, but in
water, and with results that the artist can only partially control. From the cycle texts written in ink (2006), to the blue series
(2009) in which I made use of plaster and powders, to the Red works ( 2011), where I carried out experiments with various
organic materials, and then to environment: a new space that becomes a vessel which the visitor is invited to enter (2013),
my encounter with the element of water has continued to develop and grow ever more fertile.
Recently a new start with large format polaroids (20x25 cm) in black and white. My work strives for coupling the scientific
observation of the behavior of materials and the capacity to reproduce it with a state of creative freedom in which the image
is shifted onto levels of perception quite different from those to which traditional painting has accustomed us. My praxis
finds its basis in the fragility of vision and its transformation.

STATEMENT
II live and work in Rome.
In my research I often try to crystallise everything which is ephemeral and fleeting throught a practical approach to the
matter, which allows me to cleave to reality and grasp it.
Between the physical and the abstract, nature and the artificial, my research aims – rather than creating single objects - at
making their interior shape and image emerge. Rather than being static or frontal, their features are accomplished thorough
evocations and semantic and visual shifts.

STATEMENT
I Live and work between Milan and London.
In my paintings, tactile and organic visual episodes slide into one another, establishing connections through affinity or contrast. For me, a painting is the place where a simulation occurs, where an image is the result of a stratification of experiences.
This series of paintings reveales my fascination for landscapes and the attraction I have for Rousseau’s last writings and
concepts about Reverie. The paintings depict fragments of nature that appear at first glance as abstract surfaces within a
uniform and vibrantly balanced composition. In a random yet intuitive approach, I use collage technique or layered painting
to compose elements of landscapes and offer the viewer the possibility of strolling amongst various points of view and of
finding themselves in a state of reverie and dreamlike perception of nature. The act of watching the painting goes side by
side with the act of perceiving, entangling all the senses.
