Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch presents for the first time in Italy a solo show of the Swiss artist, Alain Huck. Three
exceptionally large charcoal drawings on paper, a video and a sculpture in solid aluminium will be on exhibit.
Since 2006 Alain Huck has concentrated on the execution of cycles of drawings on a monumental scale with the
intention of establishing a physical relationship with the spectator. These works reflect a profound state of anguish
deriving from the artist’s reflections on the dramatic choices made by most nations of the West concerning energy
policies that are irremediably harmful for our planet.
At the centre of the exhibition rises an architectonic structure in aluminium modelled on raw wood entitled Tentation. The
sculpture has a wealth of evocative references such as primitive huts, the tree-houses children build, the hermitage of
St. Anthony in the numerous representations of “The Temptations”, and the petrified remains of the cabin used by Henry
David Thoreau, a 19th pioneer in ecology and the author of Walden (1854).
In the video In memoriam Monsanto 13 gennaio 1962, a video camera is fixed on an animal’s lair in a forest. Around it,
vegetation, shadows and lights mix vibrantly. The title of the video is a reminder of the date when the American Army
began to bomb Vietnam with millions of tons of a highly toxic defoliant (Agent Orange) produced by the Monsanto
Company.
The drawing, Taboo (from the Narcisse series) shows a human figure, the artist himself, emerging or disappearing like
an evanescent spectre inside a jungle of artificial shapes: the general effect of a mirrored duplication of the vegetation. In
the foreground, the artist’s hand offers a bunch of flowers, which seem more like an explosion than a bouquet of
narcissus, the flowers to which the title of the series refers. The work’s title, Tabou, is a homage to Murnau’s film of the
same name, which it alludes to because of the bond between the human body and plants, and the presence of shadows
that embody mysterious powers, but above all, to an approach to raw Nature, both menaced and menacing..
The explosion theme also appears in Chrysanthemum, part of the Hanabi (fireworks) series: the metaphor is from a story
in Kenzaburo Oe’s Teach Us to Overcome Our Madness. Huck refers to the passage about a 675,000 sq. km.

Finally, in this apocalyptic context, the third drawing, Ophelia Rest, where there is an ashy-grey and lugubrious
vegetation, the metaphor is Nature consumed and betrayed, fallen into an apparent slumber which perhaps is already
death for all of humanity.
Alain Huck (1957) was born in Vevey, Switzerland. He currently lives and works in Lausanne. The Co-founder of M/2 Space, he has been an active
participant in the dynamics of the Swiss artistic scene since 1980. In 1987 he was a resident artist at the Cité Internationale des Arts of Paris and in
1989, at the Swiss Institute in Rome. In 2013 he won the Grand Prix de l’État de Vaud (Switzerland). Among his solo shows are: 2013 Surtout

La Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch presenta per la prima volta in Italia la personale dell’artista svizzero Alain Huck. In
mostra tre disegni a carboncino su carta di grandi dimensioni, un video e una scultura in alluminio massiccio.
Dal 2006 Alain Huck si è dedicato alla realizzazione di cicli di disegni su scala monumentale nell’intento di stabilire un
rapporto fisico con lo spettatore. In questi lavori si riflette un profondo stato di angoscia derivante dalle riflessioni
dell’artista sulle drammatiche scelte operate dalla maggior parte delle società occidentali in merito alle politiche
energetiche, irrimediabilmente dannose per il nostro pianeta.
Al centro dello spazio espositivo s’innalza una struttura architettonica in alluminio modellato su legno grezzo intitolata
Tentation. La scultura è ricca di rimandi quali le capanne primitive, quelle costruite dai bambini per giocare, il rifugio
eremitico di Sant’Antonio nelle numerose rappresentazioni de “Le Tentazioni”, e i resti pietrificati della capanna di Henry
David Thoreau, un pioniere dell'ecologia nel XIX sec e autore di Walden ovvero vita nei boschi (1854).
Nel video In memoriam Monsanto 13 gennaio 1962 una telecamera fissa inquadra la tana di un animale in una foresta.
Intorno vegetazione, ombre e luci si mescolano vibranti. Il titolo del video ricorda la data in cui l'esercito americano
cominciò a versare sul Vietnam milioni di tonnellate di defoliante altamente tossico prodotto dalla Monsanto Company.
Il disegno Taboo (della serie Narcisse) mostra una figura umana, quella dell'artista stesso, emergere o sparire come uno
spettro evanescente all’interno di una giungla dalle forme artificiose, effetto generato da una duplicazione speculare
della vegetazione. La mano dell'artista in primo piano offre un gruppo di fiori bianchi la cui immagine è più simile a
un’esplosione che a un bouquet di narcisi, fiori ai quali il titolo della serie si riferisce. Il nome dell’opera invece, Tabou, è
un omaggio all’omonimo film di Murnau, al quale allude per il legame tra il corpo umano e le piante, per la presenza di
ombre che incarnano forze misteriose, ma soprattutto per l’approccio a una natura selvaggia minacciata e minacciosa.
Il tema dell'esplosione appare anche in Chrysanthemum, della serie Hanabi (fuoco d'artificio in giapponese), la cui
metafora è tratta da un racconto nella raccolta Insegnaci a superare la nostra pazzia di Kenzaburo Oe. L'artista cita il
passo in cui l’autore narra della comparsa di un fiore di crisantemo grande 675 mila chilometri quadrati, nei cieli sopra il
Giappone, il 6 agosto 1945.
In fine, in questo contesto apocalittico, il terzo disegno Ophelia Rest, in cui appare una vegetazione cinerea e lugubre,
diventa metafora di una natura consumata, tradita, caduta in un apparente riposo che forse è già morte per l’intera
umanità.
Alain Huck (1957) nasce a Vevey, in Svizzera. Attualmente vive e lavora a Losanna. Cofondatore di M/2 Space, ha partecipato al dinamismo della
scena artistica svizzera dal 1980. Nel 1987 è stato residente alla Cité internationale des arts di Parigi e nel 1989 all’Istituto Svizzero di Roma. Nel
