Each class is identified by a well defined, smoothly shapened, numerical (i.e. non normalized) cumulative distribution function. This function is considered as composed by a normalized function times a weight. • Wanting to emulate the behaviour of another location it is possible to evaluate a different set of weights applicable to the new location in question. • Any statistics (of first and second order) relative to the location is then derived by the one of Spino d’ Adda simply reassigning the weights to the partial statistics derived from each class CEPIT MEETING 2002 - Stresa - Baveno 7 olitecnico di Milano PRINCIPLES FOR THE “EXPORTATION” OF ITALSAT DATA TO OTHER LOCATIONS WHILE PRESERVING FIRST- AND SECOND-ORDERS STATISTICS (Phase 3: forcing the spatial corelation) • The data base is again partitioned into bloks of a fixed time length (let sey 1 h) • Statistics of the attenuation in a single period (e.g. 3600 samples picked up at 1 Hz) conditioned to their average are prepared • A model giving the spatial decorrelation of the averages, worked out by Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Bordoni, is then applied. • A generator of random vectors, each composed by a Nplet of averages, is activated. The matrix of the covariances can be imposed according to the abovementioned model. • Once the averages have been attributed, for a given hour, the time series caracterized by that averages are run. If the short term variations are uncorrelated, the only contribution to the correlation is the one of the averages, which has been forced CEPIT MEETING 2002 - Stresa - Baveno 8 PROPAGATION CHANNEL MODELS FOR SATELLITE TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS Laurent CASTANET, Joël LEMORTON (ONERA) Carlo RIVA (Politecnico di Milano) Uwe-Carsten FIEBIG (DLR) COST 280 : Propagation Impairment Mitigation for Millimetre-Wave Radio Systems POSITION OF THE PROBLEM ❒ FMT & SYSTEM PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT ➢ Influence of propagation channel dynamics on QoS ➢ Design & optimisation of Fade Mitigation Technique control loops ➢ Improvement of resource management with propagation information ➵ Interest to use propagation time series ❒ AVAILABILITY OF PROPAGATION TIME SERIES ? ➢ Only a few experimental datasets (essentially in temperate areas) ➢ Some developments of channel models = time series synthesizers in the framework of COST 280 ❒ OBJECTIVE OF THIS PRESENTATION ➢ Outlines on channel models available in Europe ➢ Possible methodologies of validation CHANNEL MODELS AVAILABLE IN COST 280 Meteorological-oriented models Synthetic storm technique Milano Stochastic-dynamic approaches Portsmouth Meteorological forecast + radar Bath Spectral approach ONERA-CNES Markov chain + Gaussian RVs DLR Database approaches N-state Markov chain ONERA Collection of attenuation events Milano Markov process ONERA SPECTRAL APPROACH : Portsmouth & ONERA-CNES models Spectre de puissance de l'atténuation due à la pluie f : 19,77 GHz - Elévation : 30,6° - Hauteur station : 0,18km - Hauteur pluie : 3,35km 100000 10000 Densité spectrale de puissance (dB²/Hz) 1000 100 10 1 0,1 0,01 0,001 0,0001 0,00001 0,000001 0,00001 0,0001 0,001 0,01 0,1 Fréquence (Hz ) 1st order filter CDF of attenuation ε(t) S(t) N.L. CEPIT MEETING 2002 - Baveno 2 olitecnico di Milano ITALSAT data base characteristics • Location: Spino d’ Adda • 10 years of propagation data • Link elevation: ≅ 40° • 3 frequencies: ≅ 20, 40 and 50 GHz • Earth station antenna diameter: 5 m • Available margin: > ≅ 40 dB @ 20 GHz • Sampling rate: 1 Hz CEPIT MEETING 2002 - Baveno 3 olitecnico di Milano Scaling philosophy principles the various attenuation • Separate contributions by means of filtering • Scale the time series in frequency, polarization and elevation according to ITU-R rules (each contribution scales differently) • As for the extrapolation to other locations preserving both the local climatology and the spatial correlation use the time-series decomposition principle (as summarized in the following) CEPIT MEETING 2002 - Baveno 4 olitecnico di Milano Decomposition in classes characterized by peak attenuation • Almost 3000 events identified • Partition in classes characterized by peak value, duration, and conditional distribution • Determination of the weights of each class (h/year) for a generic location, also different from Spino d’ Adda, so as to reproduce the long term CD which characterizes the location in question • Reproduce, with a simulator, any wanted statistics by using the true ITALSAT time-series, after recomposing the attenuation contributions suitably weighted according to the local climatological behaviour.
