Saint-Vincent lies in a wide basin, sheltered from the winds, right at the entrance to the Valtournenche. It enjoys a particularly mild climate, so much so that it is known as the "Riviera of the Alps". The origin of the name given to the village was researched between 1956 and 1986 by the parish priest of Saint Vincent, Reverend Aldo Hosquet, who discovered that the name could be traced back to a special veneration of San Vincenzo from Saragozza, a Spanish deacon martyred in Valencia in 304 AD. The cult of the saint in the Aosta Valley seems to have been introduced from the 18th century onwards by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Ainay in Lyon, which was in charge of the parish. The development of the town’s tourism is linked to the discovery, in 1770, of a mineral spring with excellent therapeutic properties. This brought the first holidaymakers to the resort, consisting mainly of aristocrats and the upper-classes who came to stay in Saint-Vincent specifically to enjoy the benefits of the waters, which soon became famous and particularly appreciated. Saint-Vincent rates among the best known destinations of the Aosta Valley, thanks also to the "Casino de la Vallée", one of the most famous and largest casinos in Europe that offers the chance to try your hand at both the traditional French and the American games. The casino is also a supporter of both national and international level shows and cultural events of great interest. The resort boasts high level facilities and top quality commercial enterprises, in addition to a modern and well-equipped conference centre. Not far from Saint-Vincent, right on the divide with the nearby Ayas Valley, lies the ski area of Col de Joux at 1,640 m high, which provides winter sport enthusiasts with downhill ski slopes complete with modern ski lifts, snowmaking system and an equipped children’s play park on the snow. Saint-Vincent offers a variety of charming walks, ideal for nature enthusiasts seeking to spend a couple of hours walking in the woods. By chance, in 1770 Abbé Perret discovered the waters of a spring which he sent for analysis, only to find that the waters had diuretic, cleansing and purifying properties. Named the "Fons Salutis”, later analyses confirmed the therapeutic quality of the waters. In this way, the hotel and tourism development of SaintVincent began, with the nobility and rich bourgeois of the era attracted and fascinated by the popularity of the spa resort beginning to pour into the town, revolutionizing its economy and transforming it into a “renowned centre of spa tourism”. For over 150 years there was a crescendo of interest towards spa treatments. Many hotels sprung up, and to entertain their rich clientele the first gambling house was built in the first half of the 19th century. Between alternating fortunes and changes in ownership, the present complex was built in 1960 promising first-rate hydropinic treatments such as the hydropinic crenotherapy and inhalation crenotherapy. It will offer medical practices linked to dialysis and other health services, in addition to aesthetic treatments and massotherapy rooms. The new spa facility features Turkish baths, saunas, courses of chromotherapy and aromatherapy, Alpine rain, ice falls, a salt wall and green wall, not to mention four swimming pools (including one large outdoor pool), indoor and outdoor hydro massage tubs and a solarium. CASINO DE LA VALLÉE (VALLEY CASINO) The Casinò de la Vallée in Saint-Vincent was started in 1947, and right from the first few years of business established itself at national level for supporting the organizing of events and exhibitions with great prestige and appeal, alongside activities strictly linked to its core 3 L’edificio a tre navate, in origine con copertura a capriate, è stato rimaneggiato già nel corso nel XV sec. ed i lavori riguardarono soprattutto un consolidamento dell’abside e la sua ridipintura. In termini di giochi: Roulette, Fairoulette, Trente Quarante, Chemin de Fer, Poker (telesina all’italiana),Texas Hold’em, Caribbean Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Roulette Americana (doppio zero), Black Jack, Punto Banco, Craps (dadi), Roulette Elettronica, Slot Machine, Videopoker. Moreover, the modern and elegant EVOLUTION Room, in addition to the most exclusive new electronic games, provides a large Poker Room and the GAYA bar and restaurant, where traditional tastes and aromas fuse with oriental flavour, ensuring breaks between games are relaxing to the full. 3 PARISH CHURCH OF SAN VINCENZO Built by the Benedictine monks of Ainay Abbey on the site of an ancient church, the current large, Romanesque style church dates back to the 11th century, of which the belfry, crypt and left apse remain almost completely intact. The triple-nave structure, which originally had a trussed roof, was actually renovated during the 15th century, with work mainly focusing on strengthening the apse and repainting it. 4 VESTIGIA DEL PONTE ROMANO Il territorio valdostano costituisce da sempre un crocevia strategico per i collegamenti tra le regioni mediterranee e le terre occidentali d’Europa. The interior is impressive due to the marked contrast between the simple setting designed during the most recent 19th century restoration, and the richness of the apse frescos, still perfectly preserved. The area of the presbytery is dominated by the figure of Cristo Pantocratore surrounded by the four evangelists, while figures from the Old and New Testaments are positioned around the choir. The frescos traced back to the first half of the 15th century have been attributed to Giacomino di Ivrea, a painter active in the Aosta Valley during that time. The apse, damaged by a fire in 1553, was entirely repainted by Filippo da Varallo who was responsible for, in particular, the Crucifixion scene on the left and the images of the martyrdom of San Vincenzo on the right. Fragments of 15th century frescos showing San Pietro and San Paolo can still be seen on the walls of the apse on the left, while the large bronze Crucifixion at the centre of the apsidal vault is by sculptor Minguzzi. The crypt maintains its Romanesque structures intact, with its beautiful columns of stone topped by capitals variously adorned with foliage and small volutes. The museum of sacred art, stationed at the end of the left nave, conserves numerous objects from the many rural chapels and the church itself, which form a considerable collection of wooden statues, processional crosses, altar fragments, reliquaries and liturgical artefacts. During recent restoration, parts of the structure of a Roman building dating from the 4th-5th centuries were discovered underneath the church, possibly belonging to a rich patrician or part of an imposing public building that had even been furnished with a dual heating system, judging from the presence of a “calidarium”. REMAINS OF THE ANCIENT ROMAN BRIDGE The Aosta Valley has always represented a strategic crossroads between the Mediterranean regions and Western Europe. From this perspective, steps were already taken in Roman times to create the Consular Road to Gaul, the great communication route over the Summus Penninus (Great St Bernard Pass) and the Alpis Graia (Little St Bernard Pass), to link the two sides of the Roman Empire. At the Aosta Valley, the road was mainly traced out on the hillside along the mountain slopes to avoid flooding from the Dora Baltea River. In order to overcome the difficulties presented by the area, Roman engineers cut into rocky spurs, built onto hillsides, created viaducts, but above all built bridges to overcome the numerous gullies and rivers. Still today these works offer clear testimony as to how eloquent the planning capacity was, and the degree of technical skill reached by the Romans in the field of road engineering - proven by the ruins of the Saint-Vincent bridge, which you can see from the main road to Montjovet. The bridge enabled the crossing of the Cillian River at the point where the riverbed narrows, originally consisting of three arches over a total length of 49 m. The central arch had a span of around 10 metres, while the smaller two on the side leaned firmly on the rock and joined to the course of the road. Blocks of local stone were used in its construction; accurately cut, finished and assembled, then covered in small square slabs. The upper part of the bridge originally included the road bed which was 4.64m wide. It was protected by high parapets that shielded the wind and which had small rectangular windows positioned above the main and smaller arches, with views out towards the valley and the precipices and waters below. On June 8th 1839, probably following an earthquake that caused the subsidence of the rocky peak on which the right shoulder of the bridge was built, the central arcade collapsed. Further damage was caused in 1907 by substantial water infiltration, which meant the collapse of the part of the structure remaining on the right bank of the river. In 1937 the bridge was the subject of an extensive restoration project to strengthen the surviving structures and integrate various gaps in the masonry. 5 Museum of Mineralogy and Palaeontology of the Italo Mus Circle Founded by the Mineralogical Group of the Italo Mus Circle in 1978 and recently housed in 18 Via Ponte Romano, the aim of the museum is to collect, classify and increase awareness about the minerals of the Aosta Valley, as well as the many crystals and gemstones from various parts of the world. There are currently around 750 items on display, largely from the notoriously mineral-rich mountains near SaintVincent, in particular Mount Barbeston, Emarèse, Brusson and Champorcher. The rarest and most beautiful pieces are from now disused gold, iron, magnetite and asbestos mines. Interesting examples include pure quartz, garnets and very rare local vesuvianite. The museum also holds a collection of around 170 fossils. Molto interessanti i quarzi purissimi, i granati e rarissime vesuviane locali. 6 THE LITTLE CHURCH OF MORON This small church, situated on the hill of Saint-Vincent, features a wide circular apse and dates from the 15th century, when important modifications were made to a probably pre-existing Romanesque building. For a long time the church maintained many of the characteristics of a parish church, such as performing festive functions and burials, although it was never the parish church. Recent restorations eliminated the modern structures and decorations, with the aim of returning the church to its original appearance with the apse vault marked by a series of beautiful stone ribs. The church is often chosen for weddings due to its spectacular setting. On Easter Monday the church of Moron is traditionally the point of arrival for the so-called “Processione delle Vigne” (Procession of the vines), a long walk of almost six hours which passes through all the villages and chapels of the hill of Saint-Vincent. VILLAGES Those who love alpine culture and local tradition find it hard to resist visiting all 54 villages scattered over the entire area, from the most important to the tiny, composed only of a handful of houses. Each or hamlet, has maintained some of their historic buildings and everywhere you look there are sundials, frescos, chapels, fortified houses, the traditional rascard houses (built in stone and wood) and granary barns. A Perrière, characterized mountain people. Saints are called to protect places where there are dangerous paths, and are said to appear bearing witness to a grace received. The western entrance to the village of Feilley features an 18th century fresco of the crucifixion, and nearby you can see the delicate colours of a sundial that the people have used to tell the time for many centuries. Within the village of Moron itself, a lunette representing San Maurizio celebrates the residents’ centuries-old devotion to the saint, while just as a few metres away an anthropomorphic head protected the inhabitants of a house from evil and spirits - oddities of faith and superstition. Situated in a private home in Clapéaz is a fresco of the Pietà almost certainly dating from the 19th century, and in Cillian, the seemingly medieval loggia of a patrician house displays a series of panels representing various saints and angels, next to a sundial from 1803. In Petit-Rhun another fresco, albeit damaged over time, depicts a Madonna Nera, Giovanni Battista and a splendid portrait of San Vincenzo holding a large bunch of grapes. Not far from here in Grand-Rhun, a large fresco, unfortunately almost entirely lost, depicts the Vergine Nera d’Oropa encircled by saints Vincenzo, Barbara, Lorenzo and Anna. A few metres away on the façade of another home you can enjoy a beautiful fresco “medallion” of the Madonna and Child. In Perrière, on the stonework at the base of a traditional rascard, you will find a painting in beautiful colours dating from 1753 again of the Madonna and Child, and saints Lorenzo and possibly Vincenzo - the likely protectors of the inhabitants of the house over the centuries. Anche i piccoli muri incollati alle pareti di strapiombanti versanti della montagna, costruiti “a secco” , senza l’utilizzo di malte cementizie, dimostrano al visitatore attento che l’arte è anche in questi piccoli manufatti che hanno resistito al trascorrere del tempo. paint, contains splendid frescos from the 18th century commissioned specially by the people of the village Tromen, Feilley and Pracourt - each recently brought back to its original beauty - Cillian and lastly Lenty and Glereyaz. Scattered across the area, each small church reveals real treasures that deserve to be seen. The villages on the hill also feature rascards, typical buildings in stone and wood, for living in and storing food over long winters. The architecture develops with one part built in stone and used as the living space, and another part above built in wood and resting on “mushrooms” to create a type of air space to isolate the area used as a hay loft. The villages were originally an ideal, small size, and equipped with everything that daily life required. Within them you would find mills for grinding corn, as well as presses for squeezing pomace, or grape pulp, dairies, schools, ovens for baking bread, and chapels to meet and pray in. The many families living in these small centres, formed small organized societies and the connection between the various villages was guaranteed by a close network of mule tracks and paths. Above all, to discover the area of Saint-Vincent means to enjoy a place where you can still admire the work of those who have tenaciously worked the land for centuries, “borrowing” small patches of land from the mountain to ensure enough for their families to live on. Even the little walls attached to the sides of the overhanging slopes of the mountain, built ‘dry’ without the use of cement mortar, demonstrate to the attentive visitor that there is also art in these small human endeavours that have survived the test of time. Dell’epoca romana rimangono i resti dell’arcata di un antico ponte coperto, oggi sovrastato da un ponte più re- Châtillon lies at the entrance to the Valtournenche, within a vast basin that sweeps from one side to the other of the central valley crossed by the Dora Baltea River. The horizon is defined by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, whose highest summits are Mount Zerbion and Mount Tantané to the north, and Mount Barbeston and Mount Lyan to the south. Along the sunny slopes and flanks of Mount Zerbion known as the Adret you can see villages built on high glacial ridges, surrounded by chestnut woods and vineyards, while on the opposite side, known as the Envers, and on the slopes of Mount Barbeston are the ancient villages found cloaked in woods of broadleaved trees and conifers. Châtillon has been one of the most important villages in the Aosta Valley since ancient times. Starting in the Roman era when it formed a necessary thoroughfare on the ancient consular road of the Gauls, the village centre developed along a single road axis, comprising two main points; the village itself and Chameran, each distinct and separated by the very deep ravine formed by the Marmore River and connected to each other by various bridges. cente e alcune lapidi all’esterno dell’attuale parrocchiale di San Pietro. Remnants from Roman times include the ruins of the arches of the ancient covered bridge, now underneath a more recent bridge, and stone remains outside the present day parish of San Pietro. In the spot where a castrum, or ancient fort once stood, the parish church now dominates the village. Almost entirely rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, the current structure still retains traces of previous buildings in the bell tower dating from the 13th century and in the crypt. Châtillon is surrounded by castles and fortified towers including the castle of the Passerin d’Entrèves counts of the 12th-18th centuries, the 14th century castle of Ussel, the 20th century castle of Baron Gamba, the towers of Conoz and Chavod, and the fortified houses of Brunod, la Tour and Néran. In the last few decades the town has expanded greatly, becoming equipped with modern, functional offices and sporting facilities, upgrading its historical centre and creating large green spaces open to the public in the parks of the castles of Passerin d’Entrèves and Gamba. The centre (Via Emile Chanoux) The village comprises a succession of historic buildings, of homes that although now much altered, retain glimpses of the traces of their noble and illustrious past. Doorways with their elegant stone-built architraves and wrought iron railings embellish the palatial buildings that once belonged to families from the local aristocracy. The ancient Porta Ivrea, the opening on the eastern side of the town walls no longer in existence, was the necessary point of passage for goods and travellers crossing the Aosta Valley. It came to be called the Grand Chemin and was used until the Seventies when the motorway was built. Continuing through the village you will arrive at the historic palazzo that belonged to Guglielmo Gervasone, the distinguished citizen of Castiglione, now the seat of the local USL (Local Health Unit) and recognizable for its pink colour and stucco that decorates its façade. Directly in front stands the monastery of the Frati Cappuccini (Capuchin Friars), which still houses the only Franciscan community in the Aosta Valley. The small square dedicated to the Caduti per la Patria (the fallen for the homeland), where a grand staircase sits in all its splendour, was once overlooked by the historic Hôtel de l’Ange, remembered in many tourist guides of the late 1800s, and also the one time sumptuous residences of the noble Scala family and of Charles Bich (1802-1881), now housing the library. You would also have found the Lion d’Or Hotel and the palazzo built in 1760 by Pantaléon Bich, even played host to Napoleone Bonaparte and his retinue in 1800 when he crossed the Aosta Valley with his troops in the first Italian campaign. Piazza Duc, or rather Place Abbé Prosper Duc, Martire della Resistenza (Martyr of the Resistance), forms the heart of the village where the bronze statue was erected for the fallen of all wars. The monument, destroyed during the fascist period, was melted down and restored to its original state only in 1967. Also overlooking the square is the building that hosts the local section of CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and the Corps Philharmonique de Châtillon, the oldest musical group of the Aosta Valley, founded in 1780 and called Musique. Beyond Piazza Duc, in the “Vicolo del mulino” area, you can admire the Torreano Forge, where the machines used to produce hydropower are still intact, and the porticoed town hall, with its three floors built in 1850 in neoclassical style. Next to the town hall stood Hôtel Londres, the oldest of Châtillon’s hotels, built in 1854 by Pietro Gervasone and frequented by the travellers arriving in the Aosta Valley for the first alpine excursions. In particular, Englishman Edward Whymper stayed at Hotel Londres, conquering the Matterhorn in 1865 - a feat still remembered today by a wooden sculpture made by the artist Mus which you can find in the courtyard inside the palazzo. Village of Chameran Beyond the large bridge at the entrance to the village of Chameran, you immediately meet the 18th century villa of count Luda di Cortemiglia, now headquarters of the Matterhorn mountain community association and the local wine-producers’ association. On the opposite side marking the beginning of Via Martiri della Libertà is the imposing “Casa della Provvidenza” (House of Providence), founded by the “soeurs de la Providence”, French nuns expelled during the French revolution. Over the years it has served as a boarding school and refuge. Opposite climbs Via Menabreaz where a wide path opens out beyond an arch made of stone and brick, taking you down along the narrow ravine formed by the river. You then reach the ruins of the ironworks established by Francesco Gervasone, active until the end of the 1800s and said to have produced the great beams with which Turin’s Mole Antonelliana was built. At the entrance to Via Hugonin is the birthplace of one of the greatest painters of the Aosta Valley, Italo Mus (1892-1967), who produced a rich output of around 2000 paintings. He achieved his first official recognition at the Salone dei Giovani Pittori (Young Painters’ Salon) in Rome in 1910, where he exhibited his work next to that of Picasso, Cocteau, Dufy and Chagall. A large bronze plaque commemorates the Master who immortalized the soul of the Aosta Valley. 2 PARISH CHURCH OF SAN PIETRO Even if history dictates that the foundation of the church dates as far back as San Pietro’s journey through the Aosta Valley when, with his followers, he embarked on a mission to evangelize the Gauls, documentation of the presence of a parish church in Châtillon only exists from the 12th century. Unfortunately, little remains of the medieval architecture or the successive renovations that happened in the 15th and 16th centuries, as the historic church was completely rebuilt in 1904 and reconsecrated in 1905. Only traces remain of the previous buildings in the underlying crypt and the bell tower that originally stood over the entrance. Inside, next to the choir, the small Museum of Treasures has been created with reliquaries, crosiers and precious statues, while the paintings that adorn the vaults and presbytery are the work of the Artari di Verrès brothers who were very active in the Aosta Valley and the artists behind the decoration of many parish churches of the period. SANCTUARY OF MADONNA DELLE GRAZIE At the western edge of the Roman bridge across the Marmore River, a simple oratory, the “Bridge Oratory” once stood, which was replaced by a small votive chapel in 1643 on wishes of nobleman Alessandro Beffa a “bourgeois merchant” from Châtillon. The initial decades of the 19th century saw the building extended and bestowed with a bell tower, on top of which was placed a statue of the Vergine on September 8th 1881. Madonna for their protection. The celebrations of the day and of the Chameran village patron festival reach their finale in the evening with a charming procession lit by small torches known as “flambeaux”. REMAINS OF THE ROMAN BRIDGE The bridge, built in a single arch, was entirely covered and faced in slabs of white marble. It was built to cross the river that travels down from the Valtournenche and which, according to tradition, takes its name - Marmore - from the marble used to build the bridge. Today only the ‘shoulders’ and a single line of ashlars suspended around 40 metres high above the deep ravine remain of the original structure. According to Jean Baptiste de Tillier (1678-1744), a historian from the Aosta Valley, the well-used bridge was badly damaged during the French invasion of 1691, and for over 60 years the only means linking the opposite banks of the Marmore was a simple wooden bridge that incorporated a dual toll road, of which the east was for the domain of Châtillon and the west for that of Cly. The present stone bridge was finally built in 1754. USSEL CASTLE The castle was built towards the middle of the 14th century by Ebalo II di Challant. This mighty building stands on a large rocky outcrop to control the entrance to the Valtournenche and the Dora Baltea at the bottom of the valley. It is formed as a parallelepiped and represents the first example in the Aosta Valley of monoblock construction, the last phase in the evolution of medieval castles. After the dissolution of the Challant family at the beginning of the 1800s, the castle witnessed the various ups and downs of heirs and buying and selling until it was abandoned once and for all. In 1994 the last owner, the well-known industrialist from Châtillon famous for inventing the celebrated ballpoint pen, baron Marcel Bich, bequeathed the castle to Aosta Valley Region in addition to a substantial sum of money to take care of its restoration. The style of the castle was fully salvaged and it opened to the public in 1998. We can still admire the perimeter walls and the traces of stringcourses and mighty chimneys, its skilfully reconstructed interior is a charming exhibition area hosting temporary exhibitions and also offering the chance to experience a panoramic parapet walk from which visitors can admire the Châtillon plain and its historic buildings. Le piante identificate BARON GAMBA CASTLE AND PARK The castle can be found in the western area of Châtillon, in the resort of Cret de Breil, and is clearly visible from both the main road from Aosta and the A5 Aosta-Turin motorway. The building was completed at the beginning of the 1900s by baron Charles Maurice Gamba, the husband of Angelique Passerin d’Entrèves, following the design of engineer Carlo Saroldi. The house and its recently renovated stables are to become dedicated exhibition spaces hosting a collection of contemporary art belonging to the region that mainly consists of paintings and sculptures by 20th century Italian artists, as well as work from art movements of the last 20 years. The complex is surrounded by a large park, spread over an area of around 25,000 sq m. In the park, which is open to the public, you will find three heritage trees, the great sequoia, located right at the foot of the castle, the bald cypress, found at the western edge along the confines of the park, and the spiny acacia. PASSERIN D'ENTRÈVES CASTLE PARK Passerin d’Entrèves Castle is one of the oldest castles in the region, standing right next to the church of the parish, with its outline completely dominating the village below. The ancient castle, the favourite residence of the Challant family, is now owned by the Passerin d’Entrèves family and is not open to visitors. In 1755 a strong earthquake tremor seriously damaged part of the castle and the work carried out to repair it notably altered the original medieval appearance of the castle, transforming it into a stately palace. The magnificent park set within the walls is open for visitors to enjoy, and is host to centuries-old trees including black pine, lime, beech, maple, sessile oak, European walnut, black walnut, horse-chestnut, cherry, come monumentali sono distinte da targhe recanti il nome botanico, la circonferenza, il diametro, l’altezza e l’età. Those identified as heritage trees are distinguished by labels listing their botanical name, circumference, diameter, height and age. The total area covered by the park is around 3 hectares, although the part open to visitors is around two 2 hectares and due to the delicate balance established within a heritage area of this type, its use must be respectfully limited to peaceful walks. The charming Renaissance garden in the French style located close to the castle is the only example remaining in the Aosta Valley. Qui ha sede la Cooperativa vitivinicola “La Crotta di Vegneron”, dotata di impianti per la vinificazione tra i più avanzati in campo enologico e che produce eccellenti Chambave extends along the banks of the Dora Baltea and is completely surrounded by vineyards famous for producing fine wines such as Vallée d’Aoste "Rouge de Chambave" and Vallée d’Aoste "Chambave Muscat". This vast municipality ranges from vineyards to woods and to Mount Ruvic and Mount Avic. Thanks to its central position along the course of the river, the village has been inhabited since the time of the Roman conquest; precious testimony of this is the milestone that marks the distance from the Roman colony Augusta Praetoria, still visible today at the entrance to the presbytery beside the parish church dedicated to San Lorenzo. The origins of the church’s foundation are in the 12th century, and part of the bell tower dates back to this building, while the current structure dates from the 18th century. Furthermore, walking through the historical centre offers the chance to admire elegant buildings dating from the 16th century. The true treasures of Chambave are without doubt its vineyards, well-known and admired since ancient times. It is here that the wine-producing co-operative "La Crotta di Vegneron" (Cave of the winemaker), vini come il Chambave rouge, il Chambave Muscat ed il Chambave Muscat Flétry. Every year, the last Sunday in September the “Féta di Résen”, or the "Sagra dell'uva" in Italian (Festival of the Grape) takes place - a proper competition with prizes, in which wine makers present the best bunches of grapes in special baskets and the year’s harvest is celebrated with song and dance. The area of the Chambave municipality comprises numerous picturesque villages including Margnier, situated at the edge of the deciduous woods and the starting point for the Bois du Ban and Varotta Pass. Also, Seputmian is surrounded by a vast farming area and Chandianaz, near a xerothermic area on serpentinite, rich in steppe origin plant species. Church of San Lorenzo At the beginning of the 12th century, the parish appears to be dependent on the monastery of Fruttuaria, only to be given up in 1182, along with other assets owned by the abbey in Aosta Valley, to the provost of St.Gilles di Verrès, until 1781 when the provost of Chambave passed definitively under the jurisdiction of the bishop. The duplicate convent dependency gave rise to the word "prior", which is still the term used to describe the parish priest of Chambave. The first historical mention relating to the church of Chambave dates back to the 12th century, although almost nothing remains of the original Romanesque building except for the lower part of the bell tower. The final restoration of the current church was due to prior Favre who, in 1889, had the front portico knocked down to extend the nave and build two new chapels on the side. Inside the parish church you will also find a small museum that houses a treasured oil painting depicting a guardian angel dating from the 17th century, as well as a collection of antique liturgical objects including a silver-plated copper reliquary in the form of a casket, donated in the 16th century by the commendatory prior J.L. Vuillet, and from the canons of St. Pierre, four silver-plated crosses (15th-16th c.), photographic reproductions of illuminated pages from two precious liturgical books, in particular an an¬tiphonary from the 15th century and a gradual from the 16th century that belonged to the famous prior of the collegiate church of S. Orso Giorgio di Challant. The treasured original codices are instead housed with the other liturgical books of the Aosta Valley in the Library of the Bishop’s Seminary of Aosta. The sacristy also holds a 19th century reliquary bust of San Lorenzo by the sculptor Molino. 2 La Crotta di Vegneron (Cave of the Winemaker) Chambave is the driest area of the Aosta Valley in terms of its climate, and for this reason has always been a favourable, reliable host to a wine-producing tradition. The co-operative was established in 1980, although the first winemaking bears the date Autumn 1985. Harvested grapes are brought to the Crotta by its 120 members (there were only 25 in 1985), who mainly cultivate small plots of land, all worked strictly by hand. Two areas are DOC - Denominazione di Origine Controllata (Controlled origin denomination) in the area of the co-operative, Chambave and Nus. The former comprises the hills and municipalities of Châtillon, Saint-Vincent, Verrayes, Saint-Denis and Chambave itself; the latter Nus also encompasses the areas of Fénis and Quart. The grapes of the region produce 19 types of wine of which 15 are DOC and 4 are table wine, covering a complete gamut of characteristics, with production ranging from aperitif, to dessert and ‘meditation’ wines. The organization’s policy is markedly devoted to developing grape varieties that are native (Petit Rouge, Fumin, Vien de Nus) and traditional (Muscat de Chambave, Nus Malvoisie). With the recent updating of production specifications, other “rediscovered” native grape varieties such as Mayolet and Cornalin can also now enjoy DOC status. The organization’s production also includes more international grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Gamay and Müller Thurgau. In addition to wines, the co-operative is also involved in spirits with the production of singlevariety grappas, representative of the best produce. The winery also boasts a sales outlet, and with prior booking groups composed of more than five people can take part in a tour of the winery. Champagne Dairy Co-Operative The dairy produces and sells fontina, toma and séras cheeses, and butter. You will find this along the Strada Statale 26, on the border between the municipalities of Chambave and Verrayes. The dairy is open to both individual visitors and groups, and you can also take part in processing the milk. TREKKING ALONG THE VIA FRANCIGENA In the Medieval period, pilgrimages had special significance and were of great importance. There were three centres of attraction in particular: Rome, where saints Pietro and Paolo were martyred; Santiago de Compostela, where the apostle San Giacomo chose to rest in peace; and Jerusalem, the holy land. The route that led from Canterbury to Rome, known as the Via Francigena, was inaugurated by Sigerico, Archbishop of Canterbury, who in 994 went to Rome to venerate the place of the martyrdom of saints Pietro and Paolo, founders of the church and organizers of the Christian ecclesiastical community, and to be ordained by the Pope. Sigerico took two months to cover almost 1,600 kilometres and during his return journey recorded the 80 legs of the route in his diary, which was to become a ‘guide’ for all pilgrims. The Via Francigena comprised various routes. In particular, the route across the Alps could be travelled by using either Colle del Moncenisio or Gran San Bernardo, the latter being the preferred choice of pilgrims from central Europe, above all from the Rhine basin and the upper Rhone. The part that crosses the municipality of Chambave is the stretch of the Via Francigena between Aosta and Saint-Vincent. Thanks to a particularly favourable climate, animals could be moved to new pastures in Swiss Vallese from Chambave and Saint-Denis, through Torgnon and Valtournenche, and wine commerce was already flourishing at this time. Discovering the Chandianaz ru This short route follows the “ru”, or canal, of Chandianaz and reaches Cuignon (village in Châtillon) along an almost entirely flat path. The “ru” are ancient irrigation canals dating back to the 13th -16 th centuries built not only to enable cultivation of the arid southerly exposed slopes (known as adret), but also to supply the mills, sawmills and other hydraulic machines. In this case, the Chandianaz ru fed two mills, one for milling cereal and the other for rye, situated towards the village of Parléaz, in the municipality of Chambave. The path follows its waters from the Marmore River until they reach the end of their flat course in the hills of Chambave, then merging with the Arberaz River and the Dora Baltea. The path climbs from the village and reaches the hamlet of Cuignon. Here, on the border between the municipalities of Chambave and Saint-Denis, following the Chandianaz ru in the direction of Châtillon, the open spaces unfold with panoramic views over the central valley and the woods of chestnut, oak and wild hazelnut trees taking you as far as Châtillon hill. At this point, you can find your way back to Chambave along the same path. THE GREEN AT "S. LAURENT DE MURE" Situated on the other side of the bridge over the Dora Baltea at the point of the large roundabout on the Strada Statale 26, the following facilities are on offer: • Floodlit bocce court • Five-a-side football pitch • Grass volleyball court • Football pitch (for clubs) • Floodlit shuffleboard courts • Games for children • Gym facilities for adults • Cycle route along the Dora Baltea River linking the sports area with the municipality of Fénis 10 Agosto San Lorenzo Calici di stelle In occasione della festa patronale vengono organizzati eventi culturali, musicali ed un brindisi nella serata delle stelle cadenti. Music, gastronomic produce and children’s entertainment complete the day’s offering. The village has been known since 1700 for its gold and asbestos mines, and is a prominent farming area and popular destination for tourists seeking peace and quiet, far from the more visited, bustling resorts. The village forms a natural panoramic terrace from which you can admire the magnificent summits of Becca di Vlou and Mount Torché, the imposing mountain chain that stretches from Ruèse des Bancs to Emilius and Rutor, as far as the regal Mont Blanc, while taking in the villages of the central valley below and the snaking ribbon of the Dora Baltea. Emarèse has an air of the ancient, and wherever you look there are clues to the past. Traces remain of the prehistoric landslides that covered and encompassed ice masses from which the icy cold still filters through the rock to reach the surface, or the remains of the old mining settlements; archaeological finds and place names tell of times long ago. The road that leads to Tzécore pass links the picturesque 2 toponimi raccontano di tempi davvero lontani. From Emarèse you can easily reach Col de Joux at 1,640 metres, which provides a splendid view over the valley to enjoy, before crossing the pass to reach the adjacent Ayas Valley. Nature has chosen to indulge itself in Emarèse, creating particularly evocative, secluded spots and landscapes, from the waters of Lago Fantasma (Ghost Lake) which, according to legend only appear to foretell of a promising time, to the cave always covered in ice called Borna di Ghiasa (Hole of ice), where food was once stored. 1 Church of San Pantaleone The church is not located in the village of Emarèse, but rather half-way between the main village and the village of Erésaz. The establishment of the parish of Emarèse has very early origins and it is even mentioned in a document from 1176, along with the existence of a church dedicated to Santa Maria. The parish was later annexed to that of Saint Germain in the nearby municipality of Montjovet until 1747, when the bishop Mons. Pierre François de Sales decreed their final separation. The construction of the parish church dedicated to San Pantaleone can be dated to before 1700, as confirmed by a document from 1433. However the church was completely rebuilt and the bell tower raised between 1882 and 1883. Inside are two important wooden altars, one dedicated to the Madonna, is carved and gilded with three barley-sugar columns and dates back to the end of the 18th century. The other, dedicated to San Giuseppe, has the same characteristics and was fully restored in 1786. Chapel of San Rocco - dedicated to the Sacra Famiglia Situated at the entrance to the village of Erésaz, the chapel was built at the beginning of the 18th century and was originally dedicated to San Rocco. Between 1978 and 1979, at the request of Signora Bonis Trèves Maria, niece of Abbé Trèves, and with the contribution of the Aosta Valley Region the chapel was extended after the demolition of the original choir and the old bell tower, later rebuilt. The newly renovated, larger chapel was dedicated to the Sacra Famiglia and Madonna delle Nevi as well as San Rocco following the wishes of Abbé Trèves, a well-known figure in modern Aosta Valley history, who always nurtured his dream to create a sanctuary in Emarèse dedicated to the Sacra Famiglia, and where his remains now lie, transferred from the cemetery of Excenex. Emarese geological site The wide terrace on which the village of Erésaz stands offers a very pleasant landscape. Walking around the village, we feel ourselves embraced by a sense of mystery that has always stimulated the imagination and curiosity of its inhabitants, who found themselves up against a cave from which a current of icy air flows out and a lake that is there yet not there. After approximately a half hour walk from the centre of Erésaz, you can reach the “Borna da ghiasa“, that is, “the ice hole“, referred to by this name due to the icy temperatures present there throughout the year, up to a short time ago the ravine was an excellent ice-box, which was useful for the conservation of food during the summer season. A little eastwards with respect to Erésaz, you will notice a large depression in the land, Lake Lot, in reality it only fills up sporadically and for this reason, it is called by the inhabitants of the area “Ghost Lake ” . Further east, proceeding along the trail that leads to Challand, having crossed the debris-covered slopes, you will reach Bec de l‘Uja, a sort of rocky pinnacle, the shape of which recalls the beak of an eagle, from which its name originates. These and other elements are the more or less direct expression of a gravitative movement of the entire slope, which tends to slide slowly downwards, causing fractures in the rock, breaking up large portions of the slope and giving rise to decidedly unique geological elements. This phenomenon goes by the name DGPV, that is DeepSeated Gravitational Slope Deformation. The Geological Site To visit the site the route proposed consists of two independent itineraries: the first leads to “Borna da Ghiasa“, the second allows you to see Lot Lake, the debris-covered slopes and the Bec de l’Uja. Altitude: between 1,150 m and 1,300 m Overall duration of the tour: 1/2 day Itinerary 1 - From St. Vincent follow the signposts for Col du Joux, after a few km take the turn-off for Col Tzecore until you come to the signposts for Erésaz-Emarèse. Proceed as far as Erésaz, where you can park your car opposite the town’s trattoria. Take the paved road on foot for about one hundred metres, on the left you will see a signpost with the indications for “Borna da Ghiasa” which you can easily reach by taking trail marker no. 6, which is positioned a little more uphill . Duration of route: 1.30 hrs return. Itinerary 2 - From the first houses of Erésaz (see itinerary 1), proceed as far as the centre of the town and park at the Municipality. Take the road you came from for a few metres until you reach the entrance to a lane on the right that will allow you to cross the village, until you come to the trail signposts. Having reached the end of the paved road, proceed eastwards along the farmland and follow trail 3 which mainly unwinds along the hillside: in the first section of the trail you will encounter Lot Lake, proceed straight ahead. Having passed the debris-covered slopes you will reach a site from which you will be able to make out the Bec de l‘Uja. From here, take a trail on the left which, flanking the crest, leads to the tower. COMAN (2097 m) This is a pleasant walk in woods of fir, pine and larch trees, surrounded by evocative colours and fragrances. The route is very easy, encountering few hills which make it easy even on winter excursions with snowshoes and for ski touring. You can see Testa di Comagna from the central valley, recognizable as the shape of a panettone and topped by a granite cross. Its rather flat summit is the ideal place from which to view the massive mountains of Mount Avic, Mount Glacier and Rosa dei Banchi, offering a fantastic panorama over the Ayas Valley and the Estoul basin. Various different paths take you to Coman; you can walk up from Sommarèse, Col Tzecore or Col de Joux across the fire safety path, part of which can also be used with a mountain bike. COL DE JOUX - SOMMARÈSE This route unfolds along a track that retraces the historic course of the Mountain Canal, through a wonderful wood of fir, pine and larch trees, following the canal from Col de Joux down towards Emarèse. Courtod Canal was commissioned in 1393, initially for the sole benefit of the householders of the hill of Saint-Vincent, yet in a later document the concession was extended in favour of the inhabitants of Emarèse and Challand as well, and for this reason the diversion was built that can be retraced today on foot or by mountain bike. As required for technical reasons, in recent decades the entire watercourse was brought underground in large pipes, and the old mule track restored connecting Col de Joux to Colle Tzecore, further uphill from the village of Sommarèse. This is an almost flat walk and is ideal for enjoying the rich local flora. Sommarèse is a small village which has a chapel, and typical rascard houses and old drinking troughs can still be admired, offering an opportunity for a welcome break and to enjoy the panorama of the valley and the peaks above the pass. During the winter the track can also be used with snowshoes. PICNIC AREA Col Tzecore (1,616 m) For all those who just fancy spending a pleasant day out in the fresh air, the Col Tzecore picnic area is the ideal place to take a stroll and relax. The area is equipped with barbecues, tables and benches, allowing you to enjoy an agreeable alfresco meal in the shade of the woods. To reach the area, take the regional road that joins the Erésaz village to Col Tzecore. From here you can enjoy excellent views on the central valley . From here you can admire many of the main peaks in Aosta Valley including the Matterhorn and the Grandes Murailles. The village of Pontey is known for its greenery, almost entirely spread over the right bank of the Dora Baltea River, from the edge of the river and across the slopes that alternate between gentle and craggy, reaching Mount Barbeston, Cima Nera and Mount Ruvic. The magnificent chestnut woods cover the lower area, making way for Scots pine, fir and larch trees higher up. The attractive tree-lined avenue that enters the village is as pleasant a showcase as the meadows and pastures that roll down towards the Dora Baltea and fill the landscape with shades of green. The name Pontey has Roman origins, deriving from "Ponticulus", perhaps for the existence of a small bridge of which no trace remains. The dense woods that cover part of the municipality conceal and preserve the traces of a truly distant past, prehistoric finds of the late bronze age have come to light in unexpected and inaccessible places such as Valmeriana, at 1,799 metres, where next to the old mines, remains of mills partially recovered in the rocky walls and an archaic blast furnace for smelting iron and di macine parzialmente ricavate nelle pareti rocciose ed un arcaico altoforno per la fusione del ferro e del rame. I villaggi dai nomi musicali come Lézin, Torin, Clapey, Prelaz, Épiney, Lassolaz conservano nell’architettura la memoria del passato, mentre intorno alla settecentesca chiesa parrocchiale di San Martino e sull’intero territorio comunale sono sorte, negli ultimi decenni, nuove e belle costruzioni perfettamente integrate all’ambiente naturale che le circonda. copper have been found. Villages with melodic names such as Lézin, Torin, Clapey, Prelaz, Épiney, and Lassolaz preserve the memory of the past with their architecture, while in the last few decades, near the 18th century parish church of San Martino and throughout the area, attractive new buildings have appeared that integrate perfectly with their natural surroundings. The parish of Pontey is mentioned for the first time in a papal bull by Pope Alessandro III dated April 20th 1176, addressed to the Bishop of Aosta who was in charge of the parish. The parish church dedicated to San Martino Bishop of Tours was built in 1764 on a rectangular plan with a slightly raised square presbytery. Inside, you can still admire a life-size wooden crucifix from the 15th century and two side altars dedicated to the Beata Vergine and Sant’Antonio from the 18th century. The last work to be carried out within the church dates back to the first half of the 19th century, at which time the stucco and painted decoration was completed. The paintings of the Assunzione, San Martino and San Grato on the main altar are attributed to Luigi Artari from the Aosta Valley, an artist who was very active during this period, and whose work can be found in many churches in the area. In 1874, an 11 metre-high spire was added to the original 15th century bell tower, bringing the total height of the present day bell tower to 35 metres. The belfry contains four bells, the oldest dating from 1516. The Millstones of Valmeriana The slopes of Monte Barbeston are characterised by the presence of a rock, a granatiferous chlorite-schist with a high talc content, that has been used since ancient times, thanks to its particular properties, for the production of millstones for grain and pots made of soapstone This rock is characterised by a “soft” chloritic talcose matrix which is therefore easy to work by hand and on a lathe, and the presence of red garnets and black chloritoids, very hard minerals with a noteworthy abrasive power, which are useful in grinding grain. In particular, the trail between Alpe Valmeriana (Pontey) and Bellecombe (Châtillon), has been called “Strada del Sole” as it is strewn with splendid remains of old millstones sketched into the rock and that recall illustrations of suns. rappresentazioni di dischi solari. In Valmeriana the millstones were extracted and refined, and after having been loaded onto sleighs, they were brought to the bottom of the valley, where they were probably put into storage, refined and then levied. The material extracted was used up to recent times for turning soapstone vases and pots (hydraulically operated lathe). The first historical information regarding the use of the quarries of Valmeriana dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when the Lords of Vercelli, Ivrea, Viverone and Bard exchanged much correspondence, from which a keen interest in monopolising the profitable traffic of millstones emerged. From the documents relative to those years, we learn that thousands of millstones passed through Bard, they originated from Valmeriana in particular and from Saint-Marcel and, considering that part of the product was also used by the millers from Valle d‘Aosta, very high totals were reached regarding the actual number of millstones produced in our region. DISCOVERING THE MILLESTONES OF VALMERIANA How to get there: From the centre of Pontey, proceed in the direction of Chambave until you reach the road on the left with the signposts for the villages of Verthuy and Cloutraz. Having reached the village of Cloutraz by car, where the paved road ends, proceed on foot, following the signposts indicating the visiting “itinerary” to the geological site. Saint-Denis lies in a wide sunny basin, on a natural terrace overlooking the valley of the Dora Baltea. The vast municipality spreads from the Saint-Pantaléon pass to the banks of the river, alternating between steep cliffs and gentle slopes. In the lowest part of the municipality are villages that lie within a xerothermic area of great natural importance, surrounded by rich vineyards and overlooked by the imposing rocky wall on which stand the austere ruins of the Manor of Cly. The route up from the valley towards the main village crosses a vast area mostly used for farming which contains many small villages that have retained the traditional architectural styles and the arrangement typical of mountain villages with their fountain troughs, chapels and communal ovens, sometimes still used to bake rye bread. Historically, Saint-Denis belonged to the powerful house of Challant-Cly, lords and owners of the ancient manor house admired for its medieval walls and high keep. The ruins of the medieval castle are open to visitors during the summer. The economy of Saint-Denis is based around agriculture, with particular importance given to farming vines and producing "Muscat de Chambave". Walking around Saint-Denis is an absolute pleasure and among the most charming routes to take are most notably the excursions to Saint-Pantaléon pass and SaintEvence, which are easy and accessible even for the less athletic. The tracks are also ideal with snowshoes during the winter. Parish Church The current church in Saint-Denis was rebuilt during the mid XVIII century and consecrated on the 3rd June 1794 by Mons. François De Sales. In 1963, due to numerous cracks, the building was declared dangerous and the regional council took on the work of reinforcing and restoring the building. In 1984 it was re-opened to the public. Castle of Cly The castle of Cly stands on a rocky promontory in a strategic position of control and dominance over the land below. The structure is typical of a medieval castle, built with a vast surrounding wall with gable-ended Guelph merlons, which encloses a series of buildings dating back to different eras between the 11th and 14th centuries. The main entrance is located on the north side and was originally protected by an outer door, while the northwest part contains one of the cisterns. The square keep, with its walls on a steeply battered base, features a round-arched entryway positioned several metres from the ground. The tower has formerly undergone a series of alterations, as demonstrated by a mullioned window and a construction joint resulting from an extension. The castle had an apse chapel with a rectangular plan, which also dated from the 11th century. Unfortunately the frescos that adorned its walls and vault have been almost completely lost. The living quarters are all but ruins located against the south wall, however you can still make out the flues and stoves of the imposing chimneys, as well as a west-facing windowed wall. The castle belonged to the Cly branch of the Challant family and was the judicial seat of a vast fiefdom that comprised the lands of Verrayes, Diémoz, Saint-Denis, Chambave, Antey, Torgnon and the Valtournenche. Following dramatic events, the castle was confiscated by the Count of Savoy and the Challant of Cly were driven from the territory. The manor house, now assigned to a castellan, remained the property of the House of Savoy until 1550. In the 17th century the castle was bought by the Roncas barons who almost completely dismantled it to reclaim different parts with which to build the palace of Chambave. During its long history, the castle has known periods of great splendour and abandonment alike, and today, thanks above all to the cultural organization “Il Maniero di Cly” (The Manor of Cly), the castle, which now belongs to the municipality, forms an evocative Celtic and medieval backdrop to important exhibitions and events. The castle is open to visitors in July and August. CHAPEL OF SAINT-EVENCE (1674 m) The chapel of Saint-Evence is worth special mention. From Colle San Pantaléon, around 45 minutes along a very pleasant woodland walk takes you to the village of Saint-Evence between the municipalities of Saint-Denis, Verrayes and Torgnon. The chapel dedicated to San Evanzio dates as far back as the 13th century, and has recently been restored by the Comunità Montana (Consortium of Mountain Municipality). Still today it is a destination for pilgrims asking for abundant spring rain. On the roof you can see the statue of the patron saint and inside is an altar with a painting by Vauterin from 1853. To celebrate its harvest, which traditionally occurs just before Christmas, the festival, centred around the mistletoe street market, where visitors will also find traditional Medieval food products, is made even more enchanting by the traditional Irish, Scottish and Breton music and dances, processions in costumes and performances of legends and mythological tales which culminate, after the prizes is awarded to the finest specimens of mistletoe, in a torchlight procession and the lighting of the Druid fire. Villagers gather around the old, recently restored communal oven in the village, where they bake around 250 loaves of bread on the day devoted to bread making. Work begins in the morning with the preparation of the dough, then the oven is fired up and the loaves baked on long wooden planks. Two batches are made, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The event concludes with a large tombola. September Buono come il Pane (The best thing since sliced bread) This event is dedicated to bread and traditional niche products from the Aosta Valley. The vast area of the municipality of Verrayes stretches from Becca d’Aver and Cima Longhède towards Col San Pantaléon and Col de Joux, then descends to the banks of the Dora Baltea River in a succession of woods, meadows, promontories and plateaus. A network of roads links the 62 villages scattered across an area mainly used for farming, and the focus of important drainage operations to increase yield by as many as four “ru”, or irrigation canals, built in the medieval period. Also reachable from Torgnon across Col San Pantaléon, Verrayes has been inhabited since the Iron Age and then in the Roman era, when the two copper mines close to Vencorère were discovered and developed. The municipality is rich in history and culture, and was part of the dominion of Cly in the medieval period. It was always economically linked to the centres of the Valtournenche and Saint-Barthélemy where the mountain pastures used by shepherds during the summer are found. The two parish churches of Diémoz and Vévée, the house of the noble Saluard family and the chapel of Marseiller with its 15th century frescos are certainly worth a visit. For nature enthusiasts, the Verrayes area offers very pleasant walks and excursions, such as the San Pantaléon pass, where you can explore coniferous woods with dense bearberry undergrowth, or Lozon to discover its special pond, unique throughout the entire Alpine region, where the vegetation is particularly rich in rare species and therefore safeguarded and protected. However, the feather in the cap of Verrayes is the Arboretum, much wished for by abbot Pierre-Louis Vescoz in 1905 to reforest the arid area of Pointys and now placed under the constant and attentive guardianship of the forestry commission. PARISH CHURCH OF DIÉMOZ The parish of Diémoz has very old origins and was cited in a papal bull from the 13th century. The current church dedicated to San Martino dates back to 1804. Just a century later, because the population had outgrown the size of the church, it was extended and the bell tower completely rebuilt. PARISH CHURCH OF SAN MARTINO AND SANTA BARBARA (VÉVÉE) The first historical document that mentions the parish of Verrayes is a Papal Bull by Pope Lucius III dated 7 May 1187, where the parishes depending on the collegiate of Sant‘Orso in Aosta are listed. On the walls of the bell tower the traces of the old church are still visible. It was a very low building with three naves divided by large brick pillars. This Church was demolished in 1873 and was replaced by the current church, the plans for which are by the architect Lancia. FORTIFIED HOUSE OF MARSEILLER The fortified house of Marseiller is the real historical and architectural “jewel” in Verrayes. Its construction dates from the 15th century and was the work of the important Saluard family from Tarentaise who were in the service of the lords of Cly. The fortified house is actually a collection of different factory buildings which, in the course of the centuries, have undergone various transformations because of the fires that impaired its artistic merit and changing housing needs. Its frescos display portraits of knights and coats of arms, attributed to Giacomino d’Ivrea who was particularly active in the Aosta valley in the 15th century. In the same village you will also find a chapel dedicated to San Michele dating from the 15th century. Chapel of San Michele in Marseiller In an isolated position on a rocky spur stands the chapel of San Michele, with a rectangular plan and an ogive vault. On the entrance wall is a painting of a farmer with his tools for working in the fields. Above the door is an inscription in gothic letters informing us that the donor of the chapel is Giovanni di Saluard, depicted together with his wife, and San Giovanni, Santa Maria Maddalena and Santa Caterina next to the inscription. The text also tells us that the chapel was founded and consecrated in 1441, and the name of the creator of the frescos, identifiable as Giacomino d'Ivrea. 4 Lake Lozon nature reserve A pond rapidly drying out located on a glacier terrace in the heart of a dry region. The lake is home to a rich zooplankton population, with more than thirty species noted and amphibians such as the common toad and red frog. There are fifteen different plant associations in the reserve and almost one hundred marsh species, some rare or unique to the Valle d‘Aosta such as the Drosera rotundifolia (round leaf sundew) and the Utricularia minor (lesser bladderwort). ABBé VESCOZ ARBORETUM This magnificent arboretum is the oldest in the region, completed between 1905 and 1908 by canon Vescoz, the illustrious man of religion, letters, science and geography, and native to Verrayes. The arboretum sits on an arid, poor ridge of land called Pointys and was bought by the canon with enormous economic sacrifice. This was in effect the first reforestation experiment with exotic species carried out in the Aosta Valley, over an area of over 12 hectares. Over 10,000 non-indigenous plants were bedded out; varieties including cedar, two varieties of Douglas-fir, two varieties of Mediterranean cypress, Monterey cypress, thuja, giant sequoia, and black pine. Native species, on the other hand, included beech, sessile oak, and mountain pine. The site has been open to the public since 1995, and the best season to see the Arboretum is spring, characterized by an explosion of colours and perfumes. Three charts provided to visitors with the map of the arboretum illustrate the vegetation, paths to take and most panoramic areas. The arboretum is found in the main town of the municipality. We recommend that you park your car on the square in front of the parish church. The arboretum is always open with free entrance, and there is no need to book ahead.
