Seamus Heaney (born in Castledawson, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1939) is a distinguished playwright, essayist, translator, lecturer and, in Robert Lowell’s words, "the most important Irish poet since Yeats", or simply one of the greatest poets of our time. Recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature, Heaney was also honored with the T.S. Eliot Prize (2006), and the Griffin Trust For Excellence in Poetry Lifetime Recognition Award (2012). He has been both the Harvard and the Oxford Professor of Poetry and was made a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1996. In Italy he has received the Premio Mondello, the Premio LericiPea, the Premio Cetona, an honorary degree from the University of Urbino, and the honorary citizenship of Mantua. A selection of Heaney’s poetical work until 1996 is in Opened Ground: Poems 1966-1996. Since then he has published three poetry collections, most recently Human Chain (2010). His versions from Dante are included in his own volumes and in Dante’s Inferno: Translations by Twenty Contemporary Poets, ed. by D. Halpern (1993). His interest in the classics is testified by the recently published Virgilio nella Bann Valley, a lecture Heaney delivered in Montua in 2011 upon receiving the Premio Internazionale Virgilio. The most recent Italian translations of Heaney’s poetry, by L. Guerneri, are District and Circle (2009) and Catena umana. An ample selection of his poems is due in 2014 in Mondadori’s Meridiani series. Heaney’s three critical volumes have been translated by M. Bacigalupo, who also prepared an Italian version of his rendering of Beowulf (2002). The Cambridge Companion to Seamus Heaney appeared in 2009 ENROLLMENT: Seminar enrollment is limited to 35 participants on a firstcome, first-served basis, plus invited scholars and representatives of the sponsoring institutions.
